Hi there, and welcome to the KelsoLongview area, one of the 10 prettiest towns in America, according to Forbes. And if you ask the residents of Cowlitz County, I’m pretty sure most would agree. People live here not because this is where the job they wanted exists, but because this is where they want to live. Some will talk about the rainy months, but the lush, green parks, ball fields, golf courses and beautiful lawns and gardens are all rewards for a few months of wet weather. Our communities have many things planned for the future. Lower Columbia College is currently in the process of partnering with Eastern Washington University and WSU-Vancouver on several four-year degree options. The business community is growing in each city. The Port of Longview is having a record year. The Cowlitz Economic Development Council is working with several businesses on relocating to the area – all positives for our communities. Jobs, education, business and construction are all moving in the right direction.

The Chamber of Commerce has gone through several changes in the past year. We have a new CEO, project manager and bookkeeper. We are instituting more networking opportunities and building business relationships, business growth and business education programs. The Chamber is growing in members, services and events. In June or July, we hope to be in our new facility off Exit 39 in Kelso, across the street from Starbucks and Jack-in-the-Box. This will be a shared facility with the Kelso Information Center and an opportunity to speak with more than 10,000 visitors to our area giving them reasons to visit our downtowns, parks, community events and restaurants. Lower Columbia Professionals The Lower Columbia Professionals promote and encourage the next generation of business and its professionals through community involvement, networking and education. LCP strongly supports education, and the future success of youth, raising money for a scholarship fund to benefit a Longview and Kelso high school senior each year. Chamber Ambassadors, affectionately known as “The Red Coats,” are an integral part of the Chamber of Commerce. The ambassador team is made up of active Chamber volunteers whose responsibilities include meeting and greeting at Chamber events, welcoming new members and assisting at ribbon cuttings and community events. Ambassadors are the mainstay of Chamber volunteers. They juggle busy professional careers while making time to assist the Chamber at a variety of events all month and year long. To become an ambassador, you must have been an active Chamber member, and be able to make what often amounts to a significant time commitment. Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce Kelso Known as the City of Friendly People, Kelso is a thriving and growing community of about 12,000 in the city and another 85,000 in Cowlitz County. Another 20,000 residents reside in Wahkiakum and south Lewis counties in Washington and Columbia County in Oregon, who are part of the Kelso community. Surveyor Peter Crawford named the city after his homeland in Kelso, Scotland. In honor, Kelso also has an official tartan and hosts the Hilander Festival each year. The city’s Scottish heritage can also be found at Tam O’Shanter Park, which hosts the Hilander Festival each year. Kelso also serves as base camp for Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and is also home to an airport serviced by charter flights and private jets. Kelso is 48 miles north of Portland, Oregon, 125 miles south of Seattle and 80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Its location and proximity to the Cowlitz, Coweeman and Columbia rivers also draw people to it for business, recreation and tourism.

Longview Longview is often called the Gateway to the Pacific. A small city of 36,000 it traces its roots back to founder R.A. Long, president of the Long-Bell Timber Company, who built a mill along the Columbia River and a city to accommodate its workers. Mr. Long’s influence and dedication to create a modern city to meet the needs of his employees remain evident today, and a bronze statue of him wearing his traditional straw hat and reading the local paper and receiving roses from a young girl are a constant reminder. Today, Longview is the largest city in Cowlitz County with a strong economic base and a variety of recreational, educational and cultural offerings. Ideally situated between Seattle and Portland it was recently rated by Forbes as one of America’s 10 prettiest towns.

In 2011, one-sixth of Cowlitz County’s employment base was in manufacturing, including two paper mills, several sawmills, a large chicken processor, as well as numerous smaller producers in machinery, fabricated metals, chemicals and other segments. The county has excellent transportation connections, including two active ports, rail connections and Interstate 5. In 2010, 12.7 percent of the jobs in Cowlitz County were held by workers under the age of 25, while 21.3 percent of jobs were held by those aged 55 and over. The rest of the jobs was split between those age 25 to 34 (18.9 percent), 35 to 44 (21.9 percent), and 45 to 54 (25 percent). (Source: The Local Employment Dynamics) Cowlitz County was hit harder by the 2001 recession than the state, in part due to the closure of the former Reynolds aluminum smelter. Expansion resumed in 2004, was strong in 2005, but tapered off beginning in 2006. The county led the nation going into a recession in mid-2007. Since mid-2009, employment has moved in fits and starts with no trend as yet. Construction employment in the county, which peaked at 3,300 jobs in early 2007, fell by a third to 2,200 jobs (-33 percent) in 2009. Employment recovered somewhat in 2010 before ceding its gains in 2011. The number of housing permits issued dropped from more than 700 units in 2006 to an estimated 120 in 2011. Port Of Longview I’m proud to lead the Port of Longview at a time when our operation is poised for growth and expansion. That’s saying a lot, given the economic landscape that our community, nation and global trading partners have been laboring through for the past several years. The Port is currently enjoying the benefits of years of planning and honest hard work by port staff, Commissioners, business and labor partners who keep the Port’s operation running smoothly. Our goal is to keep the momentum from our previous efforts, while evaluating new opportunities on the horizon. One of our strategic goals is to continue to find ways to fully utilize the Port’s assets: property, infrastructure and equipment. We have an incredible track record of extracting value out of our assets and now is the time for investment to maintain that track record. We’re carefully examining our facilities for strengths that allow the Port continued growth in calculated market segments, capturing more of the business moving through the Pacific Northwest. One of our more prominent assets right now is the undeveloped property at Barlow Point. The 280-acre parcel includes 4,000 feet of continuous river frontage on the deep-draft Columbia River ship-
ping channel and offers development opportunities unlike anywhere else in our region. Industrial property for large development is scarce and with all the intermodal connections that Longview offers, we are confident that we can identify a high value use for the land to further bolster the Port’s contribution to the local economy. The Port’s planning has also created a new initiative to better tell our story. Through aggressive branding and economic impact analysis projects, the Port will be better positioned to communicate our strengths with all of our partners. From job creation to cargo handling benefits, we will be able to put quantifiable research behind our efforts to better attract business to the area and fulfill our goals as a local economic engine. We want our partners, both community and business, to know that the Port of Longview is the place to be on the Columbia River. Did You Know? It is estimated that 13,200 jobs are related to marine cargo and vessel activities in the Longview area. Of the 13,200 jobs: • 6,008 are generated directly by activities at the public and private marine facilities at the Port of Longview.The public facilities operated by the Port of Longview were responsible for 404 of these direct jobs. • 4,205 are employed by providing goods and services to the 6,008 individuals directly involved with port activity. The public facilities generated 212 of these induced jobs. • 202 indirect jobs are generated by the local purchases by firms providing marine services at the public and private marine terminals. Purchases by firms dependent upon the public facilities supported 105 of these indirect jobs. • An additional 2,679 residents are employed by organizations that use the services provided by the Port. Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce Lower Columbia College Lower Columbia College was established during the heart of the Great Depression by community leaders and local citizens who realized the critical need to prepare young adults for future jobs in order to build a healthy economy for their region. Nearly eight decades later, 7,000 students enroll at LCC each year to improve their lives through professional training and personal enrichment. In 2013, the College has re-affirmed its commitment to building healthy futures for individuals and the community through five strategic initiatives. Student Success and Completion The College Board of Trustees set student success and completion as the highest goal for the institution. Longview Schools Our beautiful city is a great place to learn and grow – a terrific place to live and raise a family. We who are part of the Longview School District understand that a quality education is key to a quality community and a quality life. Longview has a long tradition of support for its schools and its students. In addition to consistent support for levies and bonds, community groups provided in excess of $1.4 million in scholarships and awards to graduates of the class of 2012. In the District, we recognize that every sudent deserves a qualified, caring and enthusiastic teacher – one who knows how to address unique needs. In Longview, teachers work hard to make a difference in every classroom every day. Opportunities for our students are bolstered by strong partnerships with community businesses, agencies, service organizations, and other educational organizations. A well-established volunteer program provides opportunities for community members to provide classroom assistance to our learners. The District is also particularly excited about the new Longview Public Schools Foundation which is working hard to help meet the needs and dreams of Longview students. Our schools reflect our community’s interest in the arts with a robust offering of arts offerings for our students. Our students are recognized regionally and at the state level for their artwork and their musical abilities.
A growingn list of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs includes a successful Robotics team and an emerging emphasis on middle school principals of technology as part of the nationally-recognized Project Lead the Way. According to statistics from the College Board, a higher-than-average percentage of Longview students indicate they plan to pursue a STEM career. Longview students are involved in the certification in the latest Micosoft products and are college- and career-ready. Advanced Placement coures enable students to excel in English, Math, Science, World Langueages and History as they work toward college credit while still in high school. The District’s graduation rate has increased and the dropout rate is lower than the state average. As a way to ensure school success from the beginning, Longview is initiating full-day, every-day kindergarten programs for all our students starting Fall 2013. The District recognizes that early success enables long-term achievement for students. Fiscal responsibility is conducted with the utmost seriousness and the District works to make sure that all resources are used wisely and to the benefit of our students’ educations. The District is working diligently to ensure that it proceeds wisely in the face of declining student enrollment and aging buildings. LCC, from page 10 Regional Economic Development Having an educated workforce readily available keeps existing businesses local and helps to attract new industries to the region. A concentrated focus on economic development is critical at this time as our community seeks to recover from the recession and to bring more diversity to the region’s business and industrial base. The LCC Corporate and Continuing Education Office seeks to increase contract training agreements with local industries while continuing to provide both credit and non-credit courses to prepare current and future workers for jobs. The College also will work to more closely align programs with workforce needs and in offering flexibility in class times and formats. International Program A vibrant international student program will offer a transformational learning experience for all LCC students and will greatly enhance the global awareness of the entire community. International students also bring stability to the college’s enrollment and revenue stream. Because tuition for these students is equal to both tuition and state funding, it will not be impacted by decreases in state revenue. In addition international students contribute to the local economy by paying their living and recreational expenses.

Kelso Schools The Mission of the Kelso School District is to prepare every student for living, learning, and achieving success as a citizen of our changing world. Attractions and Events Go Fourth
Started in the 1960s, Longview’s Go Fourth Festival is the largest annual family oriented festival in the greater Cowlitz County, drawing in more than 30,000 people for the Fourth of July. It’s a day-long celebration of independence at Lake Sacajawea. The day’s festivities include an American Lumberman’s Association sanctioned Timbersport competition, including three World Championship events, entertainment, arts and craft booths, parade, food and culminates with a spectacular fireworks display. It takes a small army of volunteers and sponsors to make the event happen each year, all working under the nonprofit umbrella of the Go Fourth Festival Association.
Nutty Narrows Bridge
This bridge is anything but nutty, especially if you are a squirrel. Built in 1963 by local builder, the late Amos Peters, the Nutty Narrows Bridge is a local landmark. Peters constructed the structure, which stretches across Olympia Way near Civic Center circle, to give squirrels a safe way to cross the busy thoroughfare. The original 60foot bridge was built from aluminum and fire hose for $1,000. An Associated Press story attracted international attention to the bridge. The bridge was spruced up and rededicated in 1983. A year later, Peters died and a 10-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in his memory. The original trees housing the bridge developed disease in 2005 and had to be taken down.
Lake Sacajawea Park
The crown jewel of Longview, Lake Sacajawea Park is a respite for locals and visitors alike. Developed in 1924, Lake Sacajawea Park has had its share of ebb and flow, but today it serves as the centerpiece for the city, offering something for everyone. Those with an active lifestyle flock to it to walk, jog and bike on the 3.5 miles of trails which meander across landscaped bridges, through gardens with trees, flowers and rhododendrons and the lake’s two spectacular fountains. The park offers an arboretum, solar system walk and Japanese garden. There’s
kayaking, fishing, canoeing and picnicking. Children or those young at heart can enjoy two unique playgrounds. There are concerts at the Lake on summer evenings. Relax during lunch time, bring a book or just watch the activity of children feeding birds, squirrels, and chipmunks.
Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument
Since the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, the landscape has staged a remarkable recovery, as plant and animal life have returned. Today, the volcano and the surrounding blast zone serve as a living laboratory, open for public viewing and enjoyment. The area around Mount St. Helens is loaded with recreational opportunities – bike, hike or fish in the shadow of an active volcano. Drive along the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway to the Johnston Ridge Observatory to look into the crater.

Hilander Festival
The city of Kelso honors its roots each September with the Hilander Festival of Scottish and Celtic culture, clan displays, games and events. The beautiful Tam O’Shanter Park serves as the backdrop for the festivities, which include a fun run/walk, Highland Dance Competition, Highland Games and Piping Competition and a Parade of Clans. The weekend also includes the Avenue of Clans, Scottish craft and food vendors, Scottish music and competitions, Scottish Shortbread Competition and a golf tournament.
Ape Cave Lava Tubes
The kids will go ape over these lava tubes. Formed about 2,000 years ago from a volcanic eruption, Ape Cave is one of the longest lava tubes, 12,810 feet, in the world. The operative word here is cave, please wear sturdy shoes, bring a jacket and carry a flashlight.

Attractions and Events Columbia Theatre
The Columbia Theatre in downtown takes center stage in Longview. Built in 1925, the 800-seat, state-of-the-art performance masterpiece escaped the wrecking ball and underwent an $11.6 million restoration, completed in 2009. Audiences are regularly treated to performances by regional, national and international artists. The Columbia Theatre recently received a state of Washington Historical Preservation Officer’s Award for outstanding achievement in historic preservation.
Golf
Gather a foursome and head to the links. Mint Valley Golf Course is a par 71 championship course featuring scenic fairways, practice putting greens and a covered driving range. Nearby, sits the private, evergreen-lined Longview Country Club and just down the road lies the 18-hole, par 72 championship Three Rivers Golf Course in Kelso. Silt dredged from the Cowlitz River after the Mt. St. Helens eruption serves as a 60-foot base underneath the course to help irrigate it, making it the driest course in the Pacific Northwest and playable year-round.
Hotel Monticello
The Hotel Monticello was Longview’s first building and named after the first pioneer community on the Cowlitz River, Monticello, which in turn was named after Thomas Jefferson’s plantation. The classic Georgian Revival building was meant to be a showcase for R.A. Long’s vision and quickly became the focal point of community and social functions. Today, it continues to serve that purpose. Like Mr. Long, stand on its front steps and survey the city’s broad vistas, parks and tree-lined streets. Inside is a ballroom, lounge, restaurant and the lobby, where famed artist Joel Knowles painted historical events and portraits of people and places from around the Pacific Northwest.
Longview Library
With its classic Georgian Revival architecture and cupola, the Longview Public Library was a gift from R.A. Long to the city for cultural and intellectual growth.

The main floor has reading rooms featuring portraits of Mr. Long and his wife Ella. The third floor mezzanine holds the Longview Room and its historic photos and documents. The Koth Gallery on the ground floor features art exhibits from local artists. A bronze statue of a youngster reading to her cat sits out front. Outside, visit the Rose Garden and the Rose Center for the Arts. The Rose Garden was started by volunteers from the local rose society and features more than 100 different fragrant varieties.
RA Long Park and Civic Circle
At one time the geographic center of Longview, RA Long Park and Civic Circle was designed after Greek and Roman cities with its roads extending out from the center. Today, it still serves as the center of Longview with the post office, Monticello Convention and Nutty Narrows Bridge all nearby. Originally named Jefferson Square,
it was renamed after RA Long’s death in 1928. In 1942, a statue of Mr. Long was placed on the terrace at the center of the park looking down Broadway Avenue. Inside Civic Circle sits Plymouth Rock Memorial, a 1939 Sundial, family monuments and a recent addition, a Veteran’s memorial.
Tam O’Shanter Park
The recreational opportunities at Tam O’Shanter Park are endless with 40 acres of playgrounds, picnic areas, hiking paths and sports fields (baseball, softball and soccer). Tam O’Shanter has become a regional and national destination for tournament team sports, bringing thousands to compete at the complex each year. In 2006, Kelso completed Stan Rister Stadium, the baseball stadium is on the short list for a future youth World Series event.
