Loowit Light Photographer Scott Eliot About the Photographer Hi, I’m Scott Eliot. As a fine art photographer I constantly strive to broaden my knowledge and skills. The beauty and variety of Washington allows me to combine my passion for the outdoors with the art of photography. It doesn’t get any better than that!
Bill Marcum, CEO Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce Where was I, May 18, 1980? I remember it was the day I graduated from college at Southern Oregon State in Ashland. My family had flown into Ashland that morning from my home town of Nyssa, Oregon, in an airplane my dad had rebuilt himself, a 1937 Fairchild. We were heading to the graduation ceremony when on the radio we heard that Mount St. Helen’s had blown its top and a plume of ash thousands of feet in the air was moving east across the state. Mud, ash and debris were traveling down the mountain toward the Longview-Kelso area. I remember stopping the car, getting out and looking into the sky to see if we could see it. We were too far south. As all the graduates stood around getting ready it was all the talk...based on the rumors I was hearing, I am surprised Kelso and Longview “survived”. Funny, 12 years and one month after that day I moved to Longview and began working at The Daily News. The Longview-Kelso community has changed during the past 40 years. With each passing year, fewer and fewer of our residents remember the grandeur of Mount St. Helens before May 1980. We’ve asked a few folks to share their memories of that fated day with readers on Page 17. ■ ■ COVID-19 This publication is designed to get people out, exploring our beautiful area. At printing, many of our local, state and national parks were closed and events delayed. Your safety and that of our community is important to us, please check and follow current protocol before venturing out. Thank you.
About the Photo from the Artist May 1980 to May 2020 marks 40 years since the eruption of Mount St. Helens. The image was created as a story of renewal at the Mount St. Helens Loowit overlook. The title I originally created was – Last Light on a Saturday Night! I created the image at sunset on a Saturday night in May of 2018 during the raging beauty of wild flower season. We have one BIG reason to stop in and say hello Sure Mount St. Helen’s is a big attraction, but we’ve got something larger than life. The Pacific Northwest is known for bigfoot sightings, especially down here in the Longview-Kelso area and our Squatch has become a celebrity. Visitors, and locals, stop in and snap selfies with him. We love it! We meet the nicest people from around the world and offer them tips on the fabulous things to do and see in our area. If you are here during the summer or fall, we invite you to come back and visit us January 29-30, 2021 for sQuatch Fest, our annual festival for “believers” or anyone looking to have a lot of fun. If you need more proof you were here, the Visitor Center is your go-to for T-shirts, souvenirs and Sasquatch guides.

Longview Established 1923 Population 38,112
Top Rated In 2012, Forbes rated Longview as one of America’s 10 prettiest towns Longview traces its roots to founder R.A. Long, president of the Long-Bell Lumber Company, who built the city in the early 1920s along the Columbia River to accommodate his mill workers. Today, Longview is the largest city in Cowlitz County with a strong economic base and a variety of recreational, educational and cultural offerings. It is ideally situated on Interstate 5 between Seattle and Portland; between the Columbia and Cowlitz rivers; 90-minutes from the Pacific Ocean or the Cascade Mountains. And, even with its diminished size, Mount St. Helens looms and can be seen from the city on a clear day.
Squirrel Crossing
Built in 1963 by the late Amos Peters, the Nutty Narrows Bridge is a local landmark and listed on the city’s historic register. The original 60-foot structure stretches across Olympia Way near Civic Circle. It was built to give squirrels a safe way to cross the busy road. It is now one of seven in the city and the focal point for Squirrel Fest.
Walk Through History
Stroll through Longview’s history at R.A. Long Park and Civic Circle. Named for its city founder, the National Register Historic District was designed as a hub for business and travel, extending out with governmental and cultural anchors like the Monticello Hotel, Longview Public Library, and the Post Office. Each building showcasing its architecture and character from the
1920s. A few blocks in any direction and there’s more to see like the Monticello Convention Site where settlers petitioned Congress to separate from Oregon to form Washington State. Wander the streets to view English Tudor, Dutch Colonial and Spanish Revival homes designed by world-renown architects or the grand Community Church. Built in 1926, it resembles a Gothic revival castle right down to the gargoyles and stained glass. The 40-ton Shay Locomotive rests outside the Longview library. It hauled timber from 1924 to 1956, when the Long-Bell Lumber Co. donated it to the city. Once in disrepair, a volunteer restoration and fundraising effort has given it new life. Opened in 1930, the nationally-recognized historic Lewis and Clark Bridge spans the Columbia River connecting Longview and Rainier, Oregon. At the time of completion, its more than 8,000-foot distance made it the longest cantilever span in the United States. The bridge was designed by Joseph Strauss who did San Francisco’s Golden Gate.

The Heart of Lake Sacajawea MaryAlice Wallis Longview Mayor
From generation to generation memories have been made including the ones of my father, who took his homemade pole to his favorite fishing hole across from R.A. Long High School from early spring to late fall, or the one of him twirling around frozen Lake Sacajawea in the late 1940s on his Minnesota ice skates, or of him playing catch with his dog, Rusty, on the banks of the lake. Fast forward to the ‘80s and my memories. I lived in a home on the westside and spent many afternoons running the lake with my own dog Rusty. A few years later on a crisp fall evening outside the banks of Martin’s Dock, I was thrilled with a wedding proposal from my sweetheart. Spring, summer, winter, fall, no matter the season, this gem, located beneath a canopy of trees awaits its daily visitors that come to enjoy the miles of trails, playgrounds, bridges, benches and lush lawns. ■ ■ On a recent stroll around the lake I discovered an unassuming otter, numerous squirrels, geese, ducks, a possum curled up high on a tree branch, and a stunning bald eagle soaring overhead that landed on a perch overlooking the Japanese Gardens. Birds of all varieties, blossoming bushes, old growth trees and ornamental grasses accent and embellish the lake. I continue to marvel at the additions that have appeared throughout the years: the freshly-paved Nichols Boulevard, new playground equipment at Martin’s Dock, the reconstructed Washington Way bridge and addition of the Solar System Walk, the North Lake fountain, the Elks Memorial Pirate Ship Park, where I spent many an hour swinging my children, the Japanese Gardens, squirrel bridges extending from the park and endless trees and benches scattered about the lake trails. Since the ‘60s, Longview’s Go Fourth firework celebration has brought throngs of people to Lake Sacajawea’s banks. Just how many elephant ears have been consumed at vendor booths? How many cross-country miles have been run? How many announcements, pronouncements, discussions, prayers, tears, picnics, parties and proposals have graced this place? What a memory keeper the lake continues to be for us in Longview. Bring your kids, dog, frisbee, bicycle, fishing pole, book, picnic lunch, or just yourself to soak in the moments at the lake. Lake Sacajawea has an amazing effect on people, and continues to be the living keeper of our precious memories.
Lake Sacajawea Park Developed 1924 Trail System 3.5 miles Water Source Cowlitz River City Centerpiece Longview’s Lake Sacajawea Park is a respite for locals and visitors. Those with an active lifestyle flock to walk, jog and bike on the trails which meander across landscaped bridges, through gardens of trees and flowers, and past two spectacular fountains and playgrounds. The park offers the Frank Willis Arboretum, the beautiful Japanese Garden and the educational Solar System Walk. There’s kayaking, fishing, canoeing and picnicking.

And don’t forget Rover, let the pooch stretch his legs at the fenced, off-leash Gerhart dog park.

The historic Columbia Theatre in Longview opened as a vaudeville venue and movie house in 1925. After years of decline, the theater escaped what would have been a tragic ending in 1980 when excavation and demolition equipment heading toward the theater was diverted to help with cleanup following the Mount St. Helens eruption. In the interim, a group of visionaries saved and restored the historic building. Today, the vibrant 1,000-seat theater hosts musicals, concerts, comedy and theatre. The theater earned a Historical Preservation Officers Award from Washington state for outstanding achievement in historic preservation. Its counterpart is the Kelso Theater Pub/ Backstage Cafe. The historic theater in downtown Kelso hosts a variety of movies, music, art and public events.
Taking Center Stage

The center hosts an art gallery, as well as a multitude of college and community musical and theatrical performances and lectures.

May 18, 1980: Where Were You? Across the Toutle Just in Time David Houten
Longtime dentist and Kelso-Longview native I was home for the weekend from UW, visiting the parents and some friends. I had just gotten out of bed and was about to pack some things to take back with me to Seattle when my mom said to go outside and look east. The ash plume had just begun to rise, so that means the beginning of the eruption had just taken place. Even from Longview, there was a slightly audible rumble as the ash spewed out. I did manage to get my little Kodak camera out and took some photographs. As time went on, the plume kept getting higher into the atmosphere and started to be carried east by the winds aloft. At this time, we did not know about or realize the effects of the eruption on the glaciers and the subsequent destruction carried down the Toutle River valley. It was an amazing sight, but I wanted to get to a better vantage point, so I went over to Rainier, up to the second lookout on Highway 30, and got more photographs from a better angle. As reports started coming in about what was happening on the Toutle, I contacted the people I was supposed to take back to Seattle. We got over the Toutle bridge on I-5 just before it was closed to through-traffic due to the logjam smashing into the bridge. We did see some of the debris but did not really realize the full impact until we finally got to Seattle that night. When I came back, the second eruption had already happened and we had gotten the ash this way. I got off the train in Kelso – my dad did not want me to bring the car down into the ash – everything was covered with ash and it was so dark, even in the middle of the day. I remember going over to Lake Sacajawea to wash the ash off our vehicles. No scrubbing, just spraying water to get the bulk of the ash off. What a mess that was! I still, to this day, can picture the eruption, as if it were just happening. ■ ■ I am still impressed by the magnificence, the enormity, the awesomeness, and the destructiveness of it all. It was amazing and I still get those same feelings each time I visit the Mount St. Helens Monument. Oh, and by the way, I still have some little vials of ash and some photographs!
■ ■ Big News The local newspaper, The Daily News, won a 1981 Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the May 18, 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption
Searching for an Open Road Jo Brewer
Retired CPA I was at Swan Island Naval Reserve Station. Many people had radios at their workstations, awaiting news about the mountain. There had been ever-increasing earthquake activity the previous week and we were all curious and concerned. At around 8:30/9 a.m., I heard a loud “the mountain just blew” from across the room. All work stopped as everyone crowded around the radios waiting for the next bit of news. At noon, three of us left the Naval Station and headed for our favorite watering hole on the Columbia River. We sat drinking beer, eating lunch and watching the eruption to the north. I lived in Clatskanie, Ore., at the time, and the other two in Cowlitz County, but not near the blast zone. At that moment, our only concern was, “How do we get home?” So many roads were closed. At the end of our watch, with fingers crossed, we decided to try going up the Oregon side. My shipmates were hoping that the Lewis and Clark bridge was open. We all made it home safely. As later eruptions sent plumes over Longview and Portland, we all started collecting little bottles of ash as souvenirs.

Retired Executive Director The day the mountain blew a bunch of the car guys in town went to Woodburn drag strip and while we were there we looked back at the horizon and noticed the huge plume of Mount St. Helens and took off for home. I-5 was closed at the Columbia River in Portland so we took Highway 30 back to Longview. Once there we went to the Bridge Bender Tavern on the Cowlitz River and watched all the debris come down the river (logs, houses, refrigerators and alot of dirty river). A week later I was invited to go in a private plane and take pictures of the mountain after the blast, where the new Spirit Lake is and the growth in the middle called Muffy on top of what was left of the mountain.
Mud Surrounded Our Home Richard and Bernadette Hallock Local residents
We were living on Camelot Drive in Castle Rock. The sheriff came through the trailer park around 8:30 to tell us Mount St. Helens has erupted. They advised us to leave. We packed up some clothes and went to Longview to stay with my sister. We watched it on TV for awhile and decided to go back home. This time the sheriff came by again to tell us it was mandatory we evacuate as the mud was coming down the Cowlitz River and it was sure to flood the lower part of the trailer court. A couple of days later we drove back to see that the mud was about 2-1/2 feet deep. Since we had to anchor our mobile home down, the mud pushed up our floor and buckled the frame. We had to wait about a week for the mud to harden so we could lay plywood down to get access to the mobile home. We were lucky our belongings in the mobile home were saved–the mud stopped at the door and did not enter the house. We had a shed where we stored our tools and lawn equipment, which we lost as the mud got into the shed. We stayed with my sister until the SBA helped us with rent until we found a house in Longview. We are thankful to the sheriff’s department for informing us about the mud. We were lucky that we were safe.

through a life-like forest, experience the eruption chamber, hike and more. The Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the globe. The Monument protects the scientific, geologic, and ecological resources surrounding the volcano. Nearly 40 years later, scientists still continue to study this area to learn more about volcanic activity and how landscapes recover from disaster.
Favorite time of year? Coldwater Visitor Center is open the first weekend in November to the third weekend in April each year. It is ONLY open Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. What can we do there? There are exhibits, restrooms, a movie theater which shows a 23-minute film “Mount Saint Helens, This Place in Time”, gift shop, information desk with maps, and a viewing platform of Coldwater Lake and Mount Saint Helens. There are also the Lakes Trail at Coldwater Lake and the Hummocks Trail across the road. Lakes Trail is two to three miles long. Hummocks Trail is a three-mile, round-trip loop. What should I bring with me? People coming to Coldwater Visitor Center should bring a camera, hiking boots, and snowshoes/cross country skis, and dress appropriately. The weather can change at a moment’s notice. Also, there is no food at Coldwater Visitor Center or gasoline, so visitors should have gas in their car and food and snacks of their own. Hooked For Life Terry Tack, DDS
Kelso native, outdoor enthusiast My fishing experiences in Cowlitz County started early and have continued in a robust and variable fashion to this day. My dad took my sister and me fishing for perch with a worm and a bobber in a rented rowboat at Silver Lake when I was about 7. With the first “bob” I was hooked for life, and that was nearly 70 years ago. Next came trout fishing on local lakes from a rowboat – Spirit Lake, Silver Lake, and Horseshoe Lake just to name a few. I started fishing steelhead on the local rivers, the Kalama and Coweeman, drift fishing from the bank, in my teens. Fly fishing on the Kalama for silver salmon and steelhead extended my fishing passion. But the best of all, I believe, is fishing for salmon and steelhead from a boat on the Columbia River. During the right time of the season, which varies, the fishing locally can be dynamite. Of course, it is fishing, and not just catching ya know, so we all get blanked, some of us more frequently than others. We have an
excellent fishery all the way from the mouth of the Willamette down to Astoria. I have been doing this for years and I am still a learning rookie and I don’t mind at all plagiarizing my fishing buddies. I have been blessed with good pals who do not mind sharing the wealth of their experience and expertise. All the above described fishing is still viable here, except for fishing at Spirit Lake, a victim of the Mount St. Helens eruption. So how do you get started? We have several locally owned sporting goods stores, but the one I frequent most often is Bob’s Sporting Goods. These guys know their business and their craft, and they have a fishing section that will knock your socks off. Plus (and this is huge) they love to give tips on technique, where to go if you are a boat guy or a bankie, tips on outfitters for whatever fishing experience you want, from Chinook to walleye, bass to kokanee, sturgeon to steelhead. We have a super environment for all kinds of outdoorsmen in our county, all kinds of things to do, but fishing is my favorite. I hope this little note helps you in your explorations...and here’s to good luck and tight lines.

Fishing The Rivers Cowlitz, Columbia,
Kalama, Lewis, Toutle Catch of the Day Trout, Salmon, Steelhead, Bass
Cast a Line
The Cowlitz, Lewis, Toutle and Kalama rivers are among the most revered steelhead streams in the Northwest. The Columbia River offers reliable salmon and sturgeon runs. Try your luck with kokanee at Yale Reservoir, tiger muskies and Coho at Merwin Reservoir, and rainbow trout at Swift Reservoir. Silver Lake delivers excellent fishing for large mouth bass and is also a great spot to go after perch, bluegill and crappie. Lake Sacajawea, located in the middle of the City of Longview, has trout. Check the Fishing in Washington regulations pamphlet for limits and size requirements. Don’t forget a fishing license and a life vest.
Adventure Awaits Sleep Under the Stars There are plenty of places to pitch a tent or park an RV, ask at the Visitor Center Year-round there’s always something to get out and do in the area – hiking, biking, fishing, camping, off-roading. Whiz through the forest on a zip line. Zip lines are a pulley suspended on a cable that speed you from the top of a hill to the bottom. Rent a kayak and paddle across a serene lake. They say “the wildlife is just crazy” at Silver Lake and the Coal Creek Slough. Climb Mount St. Helens. We’re just getting started.
Monkey Around
The kids will go ape over these lava tubes. Formed about 2,000 years ago from a volcanic eruption, Ape Cave is the longest known lava tube in the continental United States. Please wear sturdy shoes, bring a jacket and carry a flashlight. Opt for either the easier route or head uphill for the longer adventure, a mile-plus climb over large boulders. Information, lantern rentals and guided tours are available at the Ape Cave headquarters from early July through Labor Day.
Mountain Biking
Longview’s Cloney Park includes a BMX trail. If you’re looking to crank it up a notch, then head to the hills, south side of Mount St. Helens to be specific, for some of the Northwest’s premier mountain biking treks. Our sources point to Siouxon Creek, Lewis River, South Coldwater and Falls Creek. The Ape Canyon ride, which begins on the south side of Mount St. Helens, we
understand is one of the Northwest’s best mountain biking rides. For those who like their two-wheels to have some horsepower don’t worry, the area offers a number of options. Rev up the excitement with a visit to the Castle Rock Raceway, Riverdale Raceway in Toutle or Woodland M/X Park.
Horseback Heaven
Horse owners rejoice, the area provides plenty of trail opportunities with spectacular vistas. Need a guide? Get up close views of Mount St. Helens with Eco Park Resort, which offers guided horse tours into the mountain's back country or on their own trails.
Take a Hike
Lake Sacajawea and many of the other parks in the LongviewKelso area are great for stretching your legs and raising your heartbeat, but for those who are looking to step it up hit the trail. The Washington Trails Association has outlined a number of hikes in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest that provide views of Mount St. Helens.
Kid Friendly
