MOMENTS IN TIME
Celebrating resilience after historic events Bill Marcum, CEO Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce In 2020, this publication and the Longview-Kelso community was in high gear to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of the Mount St. Helens eruption. Then another historic event, COVID, blasted through our community and everything came to a screeching halt. It’s been two years since tourism facilities have been open near the mountain. Our hope is you will come join us, and the rest of our community, in remembering (two years late) the anniversary of the Mount St. Helens eruption. Mount St. Helens is one of the many day trips that can be made from the Kelso-Longview area. We would like you to consider using our community as a hub. Stay here – campsite, hotel, Airbnb – and venture out each day to explore Seattle, Portland, the Oregon coast, Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier. Then return each evening and enjoy a meal at one of our amazing restaurants, partake in an activity or festival here, rest for the night and get up and do it again the next day. The Longview-Kelso community has changed since the eruption. With each passing year, fewer and fewer of our residents remember the grandeur of Mount St. Helens before May 1980, but to visit there today is a testament to hope, recovery and life. The same hope, recovery and life we anticipate for our local business community after COVID. We encourage locals and out-of-towners to visit the mountain where you can still find traces of ash among the wildflowers and visit our community where doors are open and smiles have returned.

Education Foundation Committee The Chamber’s Education Foundation Committee develops, implements and supports programs that promote relationships between business and education. The Committee coordinates the business and education awards each May, recognizing employer organizations and individuals that provide continuing education, including technology, for their employees. The event also recognizes excellence in education, specifically among teachers, administrators and support staff. Coordinating the Chamber’s scholarship program by setting criteria, selecting recipients and determining ways to help fund the program is also part of the Committee’s role, as is assisting in maintaining and strengthening the Chamber’s relationship with area education boards.

Government Center Serves as the seat for Cowlitz County Kelso is a thriving and growing community. Surveyor Peter Crawford named the city after his homeland in Kelso, Scotland. In honor, Kelso has an official tartan and hosts the Highlander Festival each year at Tam O’Shanter Park. Kelso also serves as home for the Kelso Longview Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce. Kelso is centrally located – 48 miles north of Portland, Oregon, 125 miles south of Seattle and 80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Its proximity to the Cowlitz, Coweeman and Columbia rivers also draw people to it for business, recreation and tourism.
A Park With Everything
The year-round recreational opportunities at Tam O’Shanter Park are endless with 38 acres of playgrounds, picnic areas, hiking paths and sports fields (baseball, softball and soccer). Located near Kelso High School, Tam O’Shanter has become a regional and national destination for tournament team sports, bringing thousands to compete at the state-of-the-art complex each year at Rister Stadium for baseball, Heerensperger Field for softball, as well as basketball courts and horseshoe pits. The park’s trail system edges the river and is dotted with 30 picnic areas. The park recently received upgrades in parking, pathways, turf and restrooms. Tam O’Shanter is the host site for the annual Scottish Highlander Festival and Kelso Rotary Lights in the Park.
Local History
Described as a fact-filled repository of early life in southwest Washington, the Cowlitz County Historical Museum maintains an extensive collection of photos, artifacts, and books documenting the history of the county. Founded in 1949, it is the place to discover how the land and rivers of Cowlitz County have shaped the lives of people for hundreds of years. The museum also offers educational programs, guided group tours and a gift shop offering souvenirs and keepsakes to document your visit.

Longview Established 1923 Population 36,640
Top Rated In 2012, Forbes rated Longview as one of America’s 10 prettiest towns Longview is gearing up for its centennial. It was the early 1920s, when R.A. Long, president of the Long-Bell Lumber Company, built the city along the Columbia River to accommodate his mill workers. Today, Longview is the largest city in Cowlitz County with a strong economic base and a variety of recreational, educational and cultural offerings. It is ideally situated on Interstate 5 between Seattle and Portland; between the Columbia and Cowlitz rivers; 90-minutes from the Pacific Ocean or the Cascade Mountains. And, even with its diminished size, Mount St. Helens looms behind the city on a clear day.
History Civic Circle
Stroll through Longview’s history at R.A. Long Park and Civic Circle. Named for its city founder, the National Register Historic District was designed as a hub for business and travel, extending out with governmental and cultural anchors like the Monticello Hotel, Longview Public Library, and the Post Office. Each building showcasing its architecture and character from the 1920s. A few blocks in any direction and there’s more to see like the Monticello Convention Site where settlers petitioned Congress to separate from Oregon to form Washington state. Wander the streets to view English Tudor, Dutch Colonial and Spanish Revival homes designed by world-renown architects or the grand Community Church. Built in 1926, it resembles a Gothic revival castle right down to the gargoyles and stained glass. Downtown Longview provides a quaint district for shopping, dining and an opportunity to eye some of the area’s top artistic works in
the Longview Outdoor Gallery that lines the streets. The 40-ton Shay Locomotive rests outside the Longview library. It hauled timber from 1924 to 1956, when the Long-Bell Lumber Co. donated it to the city. Once in disrepair, a volunteer restoration and fundraising effort has given it new life. Opened in 1930, the nationally-recognized historic Lewis and Clark Bridge spans the Columbia River connecting Longview and Rainier, Oregon. At the time of completion, its more than 8,000-foot distance made it the longest cantilever span in the United States. The bridge was designed by Joseph Strauss who did San Francisco’s Golden Gate.

where you can truly appreciate the beauty and splendor of the Pacific Northwest.
Lake Sacajawea Developed 1924 Trail System 3.5 miles Water Source Cowlitz River
City Centerpiece
Longview’s Lake Sacajawea Park is a respite for locals and visitors. Those with an active lifestyle flock to walk, jog and bike on the trails which meander across landscaped bridges, through gardens of trees and flowers, and past two spectacular fountains and playgrounds. The park offers the Frank Willis Arboretum, the beautiful Japanese Garden and the educational Solar System Walk along with kayaking, fishing, canoeing and picnicking. There’s a reason it’s refered to as the crown jewel.
Music and Movies
The City of Longview traditionally hosts an evening concert series and family movie nights at the lake in July and August. The Longview Parks and Recreation concerts average approximately 14,000 participants. Over 23 years, this equates to 322,000 people on the shores of Lake Sacajawea relaxing and enjoying amazing music. Both series take place at Martin’s Dock. For dates, times and details visit the city website.
The Wild Side
The State Department of Fisheries Wildlife classifies the lake as a “warm waters fishery” with year round fishing. Fish populations include large mouth bass, trout (stocked several times per
year), a healthy population of bluegill, some yellow perch. The lake hosts an annual youth community fishing derby. Water fowl are numerous, some indigenous year round. They include a variety of ducks, Canadian geese, cormorants in the spring and colorful wood ducks. Visitors may also spy otters, beavers, weasels, raccoons, opossums and deer on their walks.
Fourth of July Fun
Lake Sacajawea Park serves as host for the Longview community’s family friendly Fourth of July celebration. The festival began in the 1960s and now draws more than 30,000 people to events culminating on the Fourth of July with a spectacular fireworks extravaganza. The lake itself provides the course for an annual Cardboard Boat Regatta. The festival has become a time honored tradition in Longview’s history.

Parks Green Fields Longview has miles of trails and 18 parks (300+ acres of parks and open space) and 13,000 trees Fields of Dreams
The Heerensperger Girl’s Softball Complex at Tam O’Shanter Park is busy all summer long. Businessman and Kelso native David Heerensperger helped build the park in memory of his mother. Also located at Tam O’Shanter Park is Rister Stadium. The stadium is named after Stan Rister, a passionate volunteer with Cowlitz Little League and Kelso Babe Ruth. The 500-seat stadium was dedicated in 2006 with Hall of Fame baseball player Reggie Jackson and other major league stars in attendance. In addition to Tam O’Shanter and Lake Sacajawea, the parks in and around Kelso and Longview offer something for everyone.
Wet and Wonderful
Kelso’s Catlin Rotary Spray Park offers an alternative to cooling off in the area’s rivers or lakes. It is located on the corner of Cowlitz Way and Main Street and includes benches, picnic tables and restrooms. It’s open Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends. Prefer a pool? There’s the Longview YMCA of Southwest Washington.

Located along the river, Gerhart Gardens Park is easy on the mind. Soak in the beautiful scenery by boat, there’s a convenient launch, walk along the shore, or set up a picnic under a shady tree. Cast a line, either by land or water, both are acceptable. The 14 acres also include basketball courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts and a playground. And don’t forget Rover, let the pooch stretch his legs at the fenced, off-leash Gerhart Dog Park.

West of Longview is a mile of sandy beach along the Columbia River and Willow Grove Park. This is a popular location year round to enjoy a number of outdoor activities. The Port of Kalama offers stellar riverfront recreational facilities, including walking and biking paths, playgrounds, covered picnic shelters and the tallest totem pole in the Pacific Northwest. Take Me Out to a Ballgame! Champs The Lower Columbia College Red Devils have won 14 collegiate baseball championships and 10 softball titles since 1970
If you like baseball, Kelso and Longview are your kind of towns. Between spring and fall, chances are there’s a game happening on any of the high school or city fields. The level of competition covers parks and recreation leagues for kids and adults and youth leagues for Little League, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken and American Legion. Fields at Tam O’Shanter Park are full nearly every weekend with tournaments that bring players and families from across the state and the country to town. Lower Columbia College has a long history of baseball and softball prowess, where you might be able to catch the next minor league starter. Step up to the next level, pack up the family and head out on a summer evening to catch an up-and-coming Major League Baseball sensation at a Cowlitz Black Bears game. The Black Bears compete in the West Coast League and feature some of the country’s top collegiate players. All the fun of a big-league game, but close to home. In addition to serving as home to the Red Devils, Lower Columbia College’s David B. Story Field hosts the Cowlitz Black Bears. The Longview stadium was remodeled for the Black Bears inaugural season in 2010. Amenities include party decks and suites in left field, the Home Plate Club in the grandstand area, and picnic tables in right field. This year’s 58-game schedule includes 30 home games with general admission seats just $8 or rent a picnic table that seats six for $51.

Adventure Awaits Sleep Under the Stars There are plenty of places to pitch a tent or park an RV, ask at the Visitor Center Year-round there’s something to get out and do in the area – hiking, biking, fishing, camping, off-roading. Whiz through the forest on a zip line. Zip lines are a pulley suspended on a cable that speed you from the top of a hill to the bottom. Rent a kayak and paddle across a serene lake. They say “the wildlife is just crazy” at Silver Lake and the Coal Creek Slough. Climb Mount St. Helens. We’re just getting started.
Monkey Around
The kids will go ape over these lava tubes. Formed about 2,000 years ago from a volcanic eruption, Ape Cave is the longest known lava tube in the continental United States. Sturdy shoes are recommended and bring a jacket and carry a flashlight. Opt for either the easier route or head uphill for the longer adventure, a mile-plus climb over large boulders. Information, lantern rentals and guided tours are available at the Ape Cave headquarters from early July through Labor Day.
Mountain Biking
Longview’s Cloney Park includes a BMX trail. If you’re looking to crank it up a notch, then head to the hills, south side of Mount St. Helens to be specific, for some of the Northwest’s premier mountain biking treks. Our sources point to Siouxon Creek, Lewis River, South Coldwater and Falls Creek. The Ape Canyon ride, which begins on the south side of Mount St. Helens, we
understand is one of the Northwest's best mountain biking rides. For those who like their two-wheels to have some horsepower don’t worry, the area offers a number of options. Rev up the excitement with a visit to any of the raceways in our neighboring communities like Castle Rock and Woodland.
Take a Hike Lake Sacajawea and many of the other parks in the LongviewKelso area are great for stretching your legs and raising your heartbeat, but for those who are looking to step it up hit the trail. The Washington Trails Association has outlined a number of hikes in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest that provide views of Mount St. Helens.

Enter the “eruption chamber” to view an astounding video of what the forest looked like immediately after the eruption. Hear a first-hand report from a local newscaster who barely escaped. Breathtaking photographs and life-size models of loggers working in the blast zone bring the experience to life. The Forest Learning Center tells the story from nature’s perspective and gives a handson approach to learning in the Discovery Room where families can touch lava rocks, learn about the animals of the Pacific Northwest, and discover how trees grow.

Fishing The Rivers Cowlitz, Columbia, Kalama, Lewis, Toutle Catch of the Day Trout, Salmon, Steelhead, Bass
Cast a Line
The Cowlitz, Lewis, Toutle and Kalama rivers are among the most revered steelhead streams in the Northwest. The Columbia River offers reliable salmon and sturgeon runs. Try your luck with kokanee at Yale Reservoir, tiger muskies and Coho at Merwin Reservoir, and rainbow trout at Swift Reservoir. Silver Lake delivers excellent fishing for large mouth bass and is also a great spot to go after perch, bluegill and crappie. Lake Sacajawea, located in the middle of the City of Longview, has trout. Check the Fishing in Washington regulations pamphlet for limits and size requirements. Don’t forget a fishing license and a life vest.
Watch for Smelt
Local rivers like the Cowlitz and Columbia are noted for their late-winter run of smelt, but plucking them from the waters is not always allowed. These small, silver fish are known for their oily texture and represent one of the few dip-net fisheries in Washington. Because the smelt were listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act, fisheries do not occur every year. Though hundreds of millions of the little dudes can return to the Columbia River and tributaries, the run is not always able to support recreational fishing. Each year, fishery managers with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife monitor the smelt run to estimate the size of the return and whether a fishery can be opened, typically
anytime from early February to early March, on short notice, and usually just a single day or even a few hours.
Need Guidance? Looking for tips for the best local fishing holes? Want a memorable and fun experience for the kids? Hoping to snag a trophy winter steelhead? Sounds like you might be in the market for a local fishing guide. There are plenty in the area and Bob’s Sporting Goods is a good place to start. The staff there has put together a list of guides and has the equipment and licenses you’ll need.

The historic Columbia Theatre in Longview opened as a vaudeville venue and movie house in 1925. After years of decline, the theater escaped the wrecking ball in 1980 when demolition equipment heading toward the theater was diverted to help with cleanup following the Mount St. Helens eruption. In the interim, a group of visionaries saved and restored the historic building. Today, the 1,000-seat theater hosts musicals, concerts, comedy and theatre. Its counterpart is the Kelso Theater Pub/Backstage Cafe. The historic theater in downtown Kelso hosts a variety of movies, music, art and public events. The Rose Center for the Arts at Lower Columbia College offers a full program of events, and features a 500-seat auditorium considered the best hall for music performance in southwest Washington. The center hosts an art gallery, as well as a multitude of college and community musical and theatrical performances and lectures.
Music and Theater
There’s something for every music lover in Longview and Kelso. The City of Longview hosts its free evening Summer Concert Series at Martin’s Dock, Lake Sacajawea Park. There’s also the Music on the Mountain series and Arts of the Mountain at Mount St. Helens, as well as regular performances from the Columbia River Symphony and SW Washington Symphony. The Cowlitz Tribe offers entertainment at the ilani Casino down the highway near Ridgefield. The venue hosts regional entertainers as well as big names. The Cowlitz County Fair is another opportunty to see favorite performers live. Local theater troupe Stageworks Northwest performs works from great artists like Shakespeare, Gilbert and Sullivan and Neil Simon year-long on their Longview stage, and they are not alone.
Avenue of Art
Longview Outdoor Gallery provides a rotating exhibit of outdoor sculpture in the heart of downtown along Commerce Avenue. The exhibit is supported by local patrons, donors and businesses. The first exhibit, 11 sculptures, went up in 2011 and it continues to grow. Eight new temporary sculptures were installed in 2021. The Longview Outdoor Gallery has created a podcast audio tour to showcase the art sprinkled throughout downtown Longview. The podcast is available on six platforms including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Each episode of the podcast corresponds with a sculpture and details the artist who built the piece and a bit about the piece itself. Podcast QR code:

Elisha was amazing every step of the way! She was quick with all responses and worked miracles for us! This was our first time buying a home and to say we had no clue what we were doing is an understatement. She walked us through everything start to finish; called and explained things when I felt overwhelmed with the process; and recommended an amazing team of people (from insurance, finance, plumbers, inspectors and electricians) that got the job done! Our closing was insanely fast and we couldn't have done it without her! Truly grateful and very pleased! Highly recommend her and her team! - J. Clutter

We used Elisha to sell our home. She was excellent! She knows the business and has a vast network of professionals to help with every need you may have with selling. She helped us set up a preinspection so we knew what was potentially an issue with our home before we listed. She held an open house and worked the weekend showing and answering questions. I have never had such amazing customer service from a realtor. It was the best transaction by far! I highly recommend her! - D. Woods
