A planned community thrives 100 years later

Susan Piper Columbia River Reader EditorThe Kelso-Longview Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to our “piece of paradise” here in beautiful Southwest Washington and invites you to join us in celebrating Longview’s first 100 years!
Throughout 2023, special events and activities are marking Longview’s Centennial. Among them are a vintage car show, the launch of a new commemorative book, “Empire of Trees: America’s Planned City and the Last Frontier,” and celebrations by the YMCA and several churches, service and social clubs also observing 100-year anniversaries. Front and center is a grand Longview Centennial Celebration set for September 8 and 9. Festivities will include a Pageant of Progress Parade in downtown Longview, a gala dinner at the historic Monticello Hotel, music, and a spectacular airborne show each night featuring 300 lighted drones telling Longview’s story. And what a unique and fascinating story it is!
A century ago, Longview began as the dream of one man, Robert A. Long, a successful lumberman in Kansas City. With timber in the South diminishing, the allure of the Pacific Northwest’s vast forests inspired Mr. Long to imagine expanding his operation westward. Once a location was chosen, he wanted a planned city to complement the two huge sawmills his company would build. This new city — influenced by the “Gilded Age” and inspired by design elements in our nation’s capital — would have parks, stately buildings, tree-lined streets, schools, a newspaper, houses, and recreation facilities for all.
Mr. Long saw his city and company materialize and grow out

of the mud and swamps of the Cowlitz River delta, thanks to a massive diking project. Commercial, industrial and residential areas were carefully zoned. Instead of random, haphazard growth, careful planning took place in anticipation of a thriving community.
As word quickly spread, workers and families flocked to the promise of well-paying jobs in a brand new mill, in a brand new city, in a beautiful, bountiful part of the country. Mr. Long also invited business owners, merchants, service workers, teachers and clergy to take the risk to join in his vision. Longview grew with people looking to the future with excitement and prosperity, and the fulfillment of R.A. Long’s vision continues today.
The Kelso-Longview Chamber of Commerce invites you to join us in celebrating Longview’s first century, as we embrace the next!

Surveyor Peter Crawford named the city after his homeland in Kelso, Scotland. In honor, Kelso has an official tartan and hosts the Highlander Festival each year at Tam O’Shanter Park. Kelso also serves as home for the Kelso Longview Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce. A growing and thriving community, Kelso is centrally located – 48 miles north of Portland, Oregon, 125 miles south of Seattle and 80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Its proximity to the Cowlitz, Coweeman and Columbia rivers also draw people to it for business, recreation and tourism.
A Park for all Seasons
The year-round recreational opportunities at Tam O’Shanter Park are endless with 38 acres of playgrounds, picnic areas, hiking paths and sports fields (baseball, softball and soccer). Located near Kelso High School, Tam O’Shanter has become a regional and national destination for tournament team sports, bringing thousands to compete at the state-of-the-art complex each year at Rister Stadium for baseball, Heerensperger Field for softball, as well as basketball courts and horseshoe pits. The park’s trail system edges the river and is dotted with 30 picnic areas. The park recently received upgrades in parking, pathways, turf and restrooms. Tam O’Shanter is the host site for the annual Scottish Highlander Festival and Kelso Rotary Lights in the Park
History on Display
Described as a fact-filled repository of early life in southwest Washington, the Cowlitz County Historical Museum maintains an extensive collection of photos, artifacts, and books documenting the history of the county. Founded in 1949, it is the place to discover how the land and rivers of Cowlitz County have shaped the lives of people for hundreds of years. The museum also offers educational programs, guided group tours and a gift shop offering souvenirs and keepsakes to document your visit.
Longview
It's a Party!
The City of Longview is celebrating its centennial. The only planned city of its magnitude to have been conceived and built with private funds, Longview was dedicated in July 1923. R.A. Long, president of the Long-Bell Lumber Company, built the city along the Columbia River to accommodate his mill workers. The planning allowed the city to grow inward along organized lines with separate areas designated for business, industrial and residential areas. Today, Longview continues to grow in size and diversity. It is the largest city in Cowlitz County with a strong economic base, educational and cultural offerings and amazing recreational opportunities centered around its miles of trails, more than 300 acres of parks and open space and 13,000 trees.

History Around Every Corner
Stroll through Longview’s history at R.A. Long Park and Civic Circle. Named for its city founder, the National Register Historic District was designed as a hub for business and travel, extending out with governmental and cultural anchors like the Monticello Hotel, Longview Public Library, and the Post Office. Each building showcasing its architecture and character from the 1920s. A few blocks in any direction and there’s more to see like the Monticello Convention Site where settlers petitioned Congress to separate from Oregon to form Washington state. Wander the streets to view English Tudor, Dutch Colonial and Spanish Revival homes designed by worldrenown architects or the grand Community Church. Built in 1926, it resembles a Gothic revival castle right down to the gargoyles and stained glass. Downtown Longview provides a
quaint district for shopping, dining and an opportunity to eye some of the area’s top artistic works in the Longview Outdoor Gallery that lines the streets. The Shay Locomotive rests outside the Longview library. It hauled timber from 1924 to 1956, when the Long-Bell Lumber Co. donated it to the city. Once in disrepair, a volunteer restoration and fundraising effort has given it new life. Opened in 1930, the nationally-recognized historic Lewis and Clark Bridge spans the Columbia River connecting Longview and Rainier, Oregon. At the time of completion, its more than 8,000-foot distance made it the longest cantilever span in the United States.
Lake Sacajawea
Longview's Brilliant Gem
Developed in 1924, Longview’s Lake Sacajawea Park is a respite for locals and visitors. Those with an active lifestyle flock to walk, jog and bike on the 3.5 mile of trails which meander across landscaped bridges, through gardens of trees and flowers, and past spectacular fountains and playgrounds. The park offers the Frank Willis Arboretum, the beautiful Japanese Garden and the educational Solar System Walk along with kayaking, fishing, canoeing and picnicking. There’s a reason it’s referred to as the crown jewel.
Music, Movies and More
The City of Longview traditionally hosts an evening concert series and family movie nights at the lake in July and August. The Longview Parks and Recreation concerts draw large crowds to the shores of Lake Sacajawea relaxing and enjoying amazing music. Both series take place at Martin’s Dock. For dates, times and details visit the city website.
The Wild Side
Classified as a “warm waters fishery,” the lake offers year round fishing for large mouth bass, trout, and bluegill. The lake hosts an annual youth fishing derby. Water fowl are abundant. Visitors may eye ducks, geese, cormorants and colorful wood ducks. Visitors may also spy otters, beavers, weasels, raccoons, opossums and deer on their walks.
Fun on the Fourth
Lake Sacajawea Park serves as host for the community’s family friendly Fourth of July celebration. A time-honored tradition started in the 1960s, the festival now draws more than 30,000 people to events culminating on the Fourth of July with a spectacular fireworks show. The lake itself provides the course for an Cardboard Boat Regatta.
A Squirrel World
Built in 1963 by the late Amos Peters, the Nutty Narrows Bridge is a local landmark and listed on the city’s historic register. The original 60-foot structure stretches across Olympia Way near Civic Circle. It was built to give squirrels a safe way to cross the busy road. It is now one of eight in the city and the focal point for Squirrel Fest.
H&N Fremont Replica
This all-aluminum bridge was constructed by H&N Sheet Metal in Kelso. It is the longest bridge to date at 20 feet and is located on Kessler Boulevard at the end of Lake Sacajawea.
This bridge was built by R.D. Olson Manufacturing of Kelso and was designed to resemble the Lewis and Clark Bridge crossing the Columbia River. It was installed on Kessler Boulevard across from the Lion’s Island.
Built in 2011, it was designed with copper and is the first squirrel bridge to utilize a
webcam. Located on the 1300 block of West Kessler Boulevard.
Safety Awareness
This bridge is located on the 1700 block of Kessler Boulevard. The bridge, built by the Longview-Kelso Bits and Bots robotic team, features an industrial look and is made of gleaming steel. It includes colored glass panels of a walker, bicyclist and runner.
Inspired by the famous Leonard Zakim bridge. Built in 2012, and located at 2900 Nichols Boulevard.
OBEC
"Woodie"
Built in 2014, located at Louisiana and 23rd Avenue, this bridge has a redwood frame and metal roofing and was made to look like a scale model of a bridge fit for people.
Nutty Narrows
Currently resides on Olympia Way, between 18th Avenue and Maple Street.
Cowlitz PUD
In 2023, Cowlitz County Public Utility
District (PUD) will install a span across Kessler Boulevard, near 20th Avenue, to Lake Sacajawea. What is the No. 1 cause of power outages in Cowlitz County? Squirrels. The aluminum bridge was designed by a PUD engineer to create an alternative pathway for squirrels who like to use the electrical lines for crossing.
Parks
Play Ball!
The Heerensperger Girl’s Softball Complex at Tam O’Shanter Park is busy all summer long. Businessman and Kelso native David Heerensperger helped build the park in memory of his mother. Also located at Tam O’Shanter Park is Rister Stadium
The stadium is named after Stan Rister, a passionate volunteer with Cowlitz Little League and Kelso Babe Ruth. The 500-seat stadium was dedicated in 2006 with Hall of Fame baseball player Reggie Jackson and other major league stars in attendance. In addition to Tam O’Shanter and Lake Sacajawea, the parks in and around Kelso and Longview offer something for everyone.
Wet and Wonderful
Kelso’s Catlin Rotary Spray Park offers an alternative to cooling off in the area’s rivers or lakes. It is located on the corner of Cowlitz Way and Main Street and includes benches, picnic tables and restrooms. It’s open Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. Prefer a pool? There’s the Longview YMCA of Southwest Washington.
River Retreat
Located along the river, Gerhart Gardens Park is easy on the mind. Soak in the beautiful scenery by boat, there’s a convenient launch, walk along the shore, or set up a picnic under a shady tree. Cast a line, either by land or water, both are acceptable. The 14 acres also include basketball courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts and a playground. And don’t forget Rover, let the pooch stretch his legs at the fenced, off-leash Gerhart Dog Park.
Surf and Sand
West of Longview is a mile of sandy beach along the Columbia River and Willow Grove Park. Operated by the Port of Longview, this is a popular location year round to enjoy a number of outdoor activities. The Port of Kalama offers riverfront recreational facilities, including walking and biking paths, playgrounds, covered picnic shelters and the tallest totem pole in the Pacific Northwest. The Port operates a marina, and its public beaches are a southwest Washington destination for swimming, windsurfing, fishing and relaxing.
Fan Favorites
GolfPass listed Mint Valley Golf Course and Three Rivers Golf Course on its "Golfers' Choice 2023: Best golf courses in Washington" list. The 18-hole Three Rivers Golf Course, established in 1983 next to the Cowlitz River, is owned and operated by the Kelso-Longview Elks. The course is known to provide a challenge for beginners and professionals. The par71 championship Mint Valley Golf Course is one of the finest public golf courses in the state. The well-bunkered greens, water
hazards, fast greens and tall trees test every skill level. The member-owned Longview Country Club offers plenty of playability for golfers of all skill levels. Known as an “old school” course with its tree-lined fairways, small, fast sloping greens, and demanding par 3s, it serves up plenty of challenges.
Disc Fun
Sports enthusiasts rejoice! There’s a 9-hole, par-3 disc golf course at Tam O’Shanter and Roy Morse Sports Complex, where the 60 acres of fields also allow for traditional sports like baseball, softball and soccer, plus a basketball hoop and playground.

A few family fun suggestions
Year-round there’s something to get out and do in the area – hiking, biking, fishing, camping, off-roading. Whiz through the forest on a zip line. Zip lines are a pulley suspended on a cable that speed you from the top of a hill to the bottom. Rent a kayak and paddle across a serene lake. We've heard “the wildlife is just crazy” at Silver Lake and the Coal Creek Slough. Climb Mount St. Helens. We’re just getting started.
Go Ape over Lava Tubes
Formed about 2,000 years ago from a volcanic eruption, Ape Cave is the longest known lava tube in the continental United States. Sturdy shoes are recommended and bring a jacket and carry a flashlight. Opt for either the easier route or head uphill for the longer adventure, a mile-plus climb over large boulders. Information, lantern rentals and guided tours are available at the Ape Cave headquarters from early July through Labor Day.
Batter Up!
If you like baseball, Kelso and Longview are your kind of towns. Between spring and fall, chances are there’s a game somewhere. The level of competition covers parks and recreation leagues
for kids and adults and youth leagues for Little League, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken and American Legion. Fields at Tam O’Shanter park are full nearly every weekend with tournaments that bring players and families from across the state and the country to town.
Lower Columbia College has a long history of baseball and softball prowess, where you might be able to catch the next minor league starter.
Step up to the next level, pack up the family and head out on a summer evening to catch an up-and-coming Major League Baseball sensation at a Cowlitz Black Bears game. The Black Bears compete in the West Coast League and feature some of the country’s top collegiate players. All the fun of a big-league game, but close to home. In addition to serving as home to the Red Devils, Lower Columbia College’s David B. Story Field hosts the Cowlitz Black Bears.
Learn About Transportation
Port of Kalama’s Transportation Interpretive Center exhibits track Kalama’s first inhabitants, the Cowlitz Tribe, and the settlers that followed. Displays illustrate how Kalama’s particular landscape gave birth to a booming transportation system impacting the area both culturally and economically — ultimately transforming the area into its position today as an internationally-connected community. The center also treats visitors to artful display models, replicas, and is the home of the 1913 Spokane Portland and Seattle (SP&S 539) steam locomotive, which worked the rail lines through Kalama in its operating years.
Mount St. Helens
Breathtaking vistas and miles of trails have been created to explore Mount St. Helens. During the summer Forest Service interpreters lead a range of activities like short walks and amphitheater presentations. Adventurers can climb–4,500 feet of elevation in five miles–or explore from the air with a helicopter tour. In the winter, crosscountry skiing and snowmobile trails are available. In many cases only enthusiasm is necessary, in others a permit is required.
Mount St. Helens Visitor Center
Mount St. Helens Visitor Center is a world-class facility located on the western shore of Silver Lake. With its high ceilings and massive windows, the outdoors becomes a part of the architecture. Your senses will come alive as you enjoy the interactive exhibits, a step-in model of the volcano and theater programs. Outside, a mile-long trail takes you into marshy plains surrounding Silver Lake where you can see waterfowl and a picture-perfect view of the mountain. Make sure to take
in one of the comprehensive presentations on the historical and cultural significance of the area. View exhibits showing the chronology of events leading up to the eruption and see the working seismograph.
Johnston Ridge Observatory
About 60 minutes from I-5, the Johnston Ridge Observatory offers the best car accessible viewpoint into the crater of Mount St. Helens. Inside the center there are models and exhibits that speak to the 1980 event. Outside an amphitheater hosts ranger talks. Located at the end of State Highway 504 (52 miles east of Castle Rock), in the heart of the blast zone. The observatory hosts interpretive displays that tell the biological, geological, and human story of Mount St. Helens. Visitors to Johnston Ridge Observatory can enjoy multiple award-winning films, listen to ranger talks, observe the
landscape, purchase souvenirs or set off on a hike.
Mount St. Helens Institute
Mount St. Helens Institute overlooks the volcano and is within the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument along state Highway 504. It offers commanding views of Mount St. Helens and Coldwater Lake. It is also home to the Science and Learning Center offers educational programs on, and about, the mountain.
Town
Some of the best golf in the state is found in Longview and Kelso. Built on a base of silt and sand from the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, Three Rivers Golf Course provides year-round play, while Mint Valley, named for the 120 acres of mint fields that once stood there, is a refreshing respite, and the Longview Country Club is long on history and greens.

Get Outdoors
Go Fish
The Cowlitz, Lewis, Toutle and Kalama rivers are among the most revered steelhead streams in the Northwest. The Columbia River offers reliable salmon and sturgeon runs. Try your luck with kokanee at Yale Reservoir, tiger muskies and Coho at Merwin Reservoir, and rainbow trout at Swift Reservoir Silver Lake delivers excellent fishing for large mouth bass and is also a great spot to go after perch, bluegill and crappie. Lake Sacajawea, located in the middle of the City of Longview, has trout. Check the Fishing in Washington regulations pamphlet for limits and size requirements. Don’t forget a fishing license and a life vest.
Need Guidance?
Looking for tips for the best local fishing holes? Want a memorable and fun experience for the kids? Hoping to snag a trophy winter steelhead? Sounds like you might be in the market for a local fishing guide. There are plenty in the area and Bob’s Sporting Goods is a good place to start. The staff there has put together a list of guides and has the equipment and licenses you’ll need.
Mountain Biking
Longview’s Cloney Park includes a BMX trail. If you’re looking to crank it up a notch, then head to the hills, south side of Mount St. Helens to be specific, for some of the Northwest’s premier mountain biking treks. Our sources point to Siouxon Creek, Lewis River, South Coldwater and Falls Creek. The Ape Canyon ride, which begins on the south side of Mount St. Helens, we understand is one of the Northwest's best mountain biking rides. For those who like their two-wheels to have some horsepower don’t worry, the area offers a number of options. Rev up the excitement with a visit to any of the raceways in our neighboring communities like Castle Rock and Woodland.
Take a Hike
Lake Sacajawea and many of the other parks in the LongviewKelso area are great for stretching your legs and raising your heartbeat, but for those who are looking to step it up hit the trail. The Washington Trails Association has outlined a number of hikes in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest that provide views of Mount St. Helens.
Art
Get the Scoop TDN.com runs a calendar of local events
The historic Columbia Theatre in Longview opened as a vaudeville venue and movie house in 1925. After years of decline, the theater escaped the wrecking ball in 1980 when demolition equipment heading toward the theater was diverted to help with cleanup following the Mount St. Helens eruption. In the interim, a group of visionaries saved and restored the historic building. Today, the 1,000-seat theater hosts musicals, concerts, comedy and theatre. Its counterpart is the Kelso Theater Pub/Backstage Cafe. The historic theater in downtown Kelso hosts a variety of movies, music, art and public events. The Rose Center for the Arts at Lower Columbia College offers a full program of events, and features a 500-seat auditorium considered the best hall for music performance in southwest Washington. The center hosts an art gallery, as well as a multitude of college and community musical and theatrical performances and lectures.
Music and Theater
There’s something for every music lover in Longview and Kelso. The City of Longview hosts its free evening Summer Concert Series at Martin’s Dock, Lake Sacajawea Park. There’s also the Music on the Mountain series and Arts of the Mountain at Mount St. Helens, as well as regular performances from the Columbia River Symphony and SW Washington Symphony. The Cowlitz Tribe offers entertainment at the ilani Casino down the highway near Ridgefield. The venue hosts regional entertainers as well as big names. The Cowlitz County Fair is another opportunity to see favorite performers live. Local theater troupe Stageworks Northwest performs works from great artists like Shakespeare, Gilbert and Sullivan and Neil Simon year-long on their Longview stage, and they are not alone.
Galleries, Movies and More
The Broadway Gallery and more are located in the heart of downtown Longview and waiting for viewers. If the cinema is more your thing, the Kelso Theater Pub and Regal Cinemas Three Rivers Mall 12 – RPX offer new releases–one in a oldtime theater turned cinema and the other in a modern stateof-the-art facility.
Avenue of Art
Longview Outdoor Gallery provides a rotating exhibit of outdoor sculpture in the heart of downtown along Commerce Avenue. The exhibit is supported by local patrons, donors and businesses. The first exhibit, 11 sculptures, went up in 2011 and it continues to grow. New pieces are acquired for the City of Longview’s permanent art collection regularly. For several years the gallery leaders have been anticipating the city's centennial in 2023. "23 by 23" is their plan to donate 23 pieces to the city’s downtown “sculpture garden.” A podcast audio tour with information about each piece is available on Apple and Spotify.
Winter wonderland
There are plenty of indoor activities around Kelso and Longview to participate in during those cold, dark months between November and March, but if getting out and staying active is more your speed the nearby mountains will have you covered.
Hike In a
Wonderland Strap on a pair of snowshoes and give the nearly 50 miles of trails at the Marble Mountain Sno-Park a go. The popular trail system is located in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest at the base of Mount St. Helens and offers plenty of winter recreation for snowshoers, cross-country skiers, and snowmobilers. There are several Sno-Parks across the forest for your adventure.
Not interested in heading to the hills, Lake Sacajawea, and many of the other parks stay open during the winter and are just as spectacular covered in a fresh blanket of snow.
Nearby White Pass
A quick two-hour drive away off U.S. Highway 12 lies the White Pass Ski Area with its majestic views of Mount Rainier and terrain for skiers and riders of all abilities. A beautiful get-away for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, or tubing. One of the area’s hidden gems with amenities like dining, slopeside lodging, a ski school, rental and retail center and more. The ski area also hosts a family-friendly Winter Carnival the first weekend in March.
Chamber Fun for Everyone
Let the Chamber put a jingle in your step with its Jingle all the Way in downtown Longview in chilly December. The evening, family-friendly 5K run or walk brings thousands of people downtown. Participants dress in holiday spirit, there’s music, warm beverages, Santa and more.
In January, the Chamber hosts its annual sQuatch Fest. It’s not chilly, but the stories of Bigfoot sightings can make the indoor event downright spine-tingling. Plus there’s a Kids Cave for the youngsters, vendors, food, expert speakers and the Brew Mountain beer garden.
