FAREWELL TO RICK WINSMAN
Chamber leaders express gratitude, fond memories as executive director retires
T
he three Board Chairmen who served the Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce and worked with Rick during his tenure as CEO shared their thoughts as we prepare to say “Good-bye” to Rick. According to rumor, however, it will prove to be a short “Good-bye,” as he will still be seen around the community in new capacities.
Dr. Jim McLaughlin, Chairman 2005-2007
Page 5
It seemed that Rick was the right fit for Kelso and Longview right from the start. He developed a quick understanding of our community and established a strong rapport with the Chamber Board. He brought new ideas for us to consider and helped the board to bring some of our own ideas to fruition.
December 1
He went right to work selling himself and the Chamber to businesses, government and the not-for-profits. Our membership climbed, we developed a series of robust strategic plans, and truly became the recognized “voice of business” in Cowlitz County. We never could have accomplished all that in so short a time without Rick. His ability to listen, collaborate and work with so many us with respect, humor — and more than a few old one-liners — will be missed! Best of luck, Rick!

Two Good Holiday Ideas for Downtown The following downtown holiday activities are new this year. I believe these ideas have potential for substantially increasing shopping downtown. As with many successful activities, they may start small but will grow in subsequent years if the business and property owners support the programs. These activities encourage local shopping and we know that if we shop local, everyone wins.
Pop-Up Shops Two temporary stores have opened up for the holidays — The Red Hat Holiday Store (1240 Commerce) and the Gift Garden (located in the lobby of The Merk, 1339 Commerce). This trend could grow. Portland is in the

Frank McShane, 2010-2011 Rick brought the right combination of skills to the Chamber when he joined us six years ago – a seasoned non-profit executive and skilled advocate for business through the political process. The Chamber needed to grow its advocacy capability at the time and we have, with Rick leading the way. He also worked hard to bridge the then existing gap between the Chamber and the Cowlitz Economic Development Council to become much more of a partnership in bringing new business to our region and helping integrate those new companies into our community. Rick’s unique style helped set the stage for expanding the Chamber’s role as a partner — with the Kelso, Longview and Cowlitz governments, with our local service organizations and with groups trying to gain momentum, such as the Longview Downtowners. We wish Rick many satisfying years as he enters the next chapter of his career.

congratulations!
Dale Lemmons, 2008-2009 When thinking about Rick and his time with the Kelso Longview Chamber, my mind went immediately to legislation. I have had the privilege of seeing first-hand Rick’s commitment to making The Kelso Longview Chamber the strong voice for business to our legislators, at all levels of government — city, county, state and federal. Through Rick’s experience, guidance and expertise, the Chamber has been able to strengthen its motto, to be the “Voice of Business.” I remember an early interview with Rick and his stating that he was planning on wearing out the soles of his shoes, as he was going to be hitting the ground running. He strengthened partnerships with the Cowlitz Economic Development Council, the Cities of Kelso and Longview and the Longview Downtowners. He brought together the communities during task force meetings and strategic planning; working together for the betterment of the whole. Rick, you have definitely hit the ground running and it’s time to fix those shoes for your next adventure! Best of luck in all you do and thank you for your service to the community. •••

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Chamber’s focus on “Shop Local” will not waver
S
eason’s Greetings to all of our Kelso-Longview Chamber members. The Chamber Board hopes this season will be successful for all of our fabulous local retailers. While the Chamber is going through a busy time of transition – saying farewell to Frank McShane Rick Winsman and searching for a worthy replacement – our focus on “Shop Local” will not waver.
Join us for the Festivities & Fun! Tuesday Dec. 13, 2011 5:30 – 8:00pm LCC Rose Center $15 per person
Looking at the polarization and gridlock going on in our state and federal governments, it is becoming clearer that we are largely on our own to improve our local economy. That means helping each other out and making local choices to spend our money whenever there is a good option close at hand. Just take a look at the members who advertise in this publication, as well as those in The Daily News or on our local radio stations. We have some real gems here in our region. They work hard to be ready for our business – let’s reward those efforts this season and throughout the year. Thank you.

DEMAND FOR AMERICAN GRAIN IS GROWING.
TOGETHER, WE’LL BE READY TO DELIVER. For generations, the Port of Longview has been a source of pride and an economic engine for our community. Now, the port is set to make history. EGT made a $200 million investment in Longview, building the nation’s first export grain terminal in 25 years. The state-of-the-art facility will put Longview at the forefront of international trade, more than doubling the number of vessels calling at the Port of Longview, adding new jobs for local union workers and creating new opportunities for American farmers to export grain. EGT’s operations will generate more than $2 million in property taxes to benefit local schools and increase the Port of Longview’s revenue by up to $8 million each year, cutting the tax burden on local families. More jobs, more economic growth, lower taxes for local families. That’s what EGT means for Longview.

TOOLBOX
T
Have you counted your eggs lately?
he investment profile, for most small business owners, typically indicates that all of the business owner’s assets are committed in support of the business. In other words, a business owner’s eggs are all in one basket! Therefore, the business’ accounting records become vitally important for monitoring investments in the business and ensuring that, at some point, there will be a return on that investment. Many businesses fail to put rudimentary best business practices in place to monitor their financial status; it makes sense to use a simple checklist to help in developing some internal systems for monitoring financial health. This checklist is not all-inclusive but it is a start. By all means, work with your accountant or a business advisor to develop it even further to address specific issues that might be unique to your business:
Daily: • Track the amount of cash on hand. • Track the amount of cash in the bank. • Prepare a summary of daily sales and cash receipts. • Follow-up on any errors or problems that have occurred in collections. • Record and summarize all daily expenditures and the means by which the payments are made, i.e. cash, check, debit card, credit card.
Weekly: • Monitor accounts receivable, particularly those that appear to be slow paying. • Accounts payable – be aware of and note (on the calendar) discount periods. • Payroll – be aware of accumulation of hours and the development of payroll liabilities. • Taxes – be aware of any items due and reports that might be required by government agencies. Do not assume
that these documents have been filed on your behalf without confirming that fact, particularly if you are using an outside service to perform this task for your business.
Monthly: • If using outside services – Provide timely records of receipts, disbursements, bank accounts and journals. • Insist on seeing Income Statements within 15 days of the close of the month if you are not producing them internally. • Review the Balance Sheet indicating the business’ financial condition. Insist on seeing the Balance Sheet within 15 days of the close of the month if you are not producing them internally. • Reconcile bank accounts and adjust as necessary. Be sure that the bank accounts are reconciled by someone other than the person who makes deposits and/or prepares disbursements. • Balance Petty Cash. • Review federal tax requirements and make deposits. • Review and age accounts receivable. Every business has unique needs with respect to its internal systems. Whether this checklist is suitable to your business or not, there should be specific steps that you monitor consistently to ensure that your financial investment is protected, that you are planning for the future and that you are leaving as little as possible to chance. ••• Susan J.
