Hoffstadt Creek Bridge
The largest and highest bridge along Washington State’s Spirit Lake Memorial Highway, Hoffstadt Creek is a deck truss bridge with a main span of 600 feet. Opened in 1991, the new highway was built to replace the original highway that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980. By taking an elevation high above the North Fork of the Toutle River, the new Route 504 is safer from potential debris run off and flood damage. The continuous truss was built by erecting the outside spans of 332 feet on falsework and then cantilevering the central span of 600 feet from each side. The approaches are steel plate girders with spans that vary from 148 feet to 232 feet. The truss reaches a depth of 56 feet above the piers. The bridge cost $12.6 million and uses 2,505 tons of steel. Shelby Bridge Co. was the contractor, Universal Structural was the fabricator and Western Pacific erected it. The bridge won the 1996 Merit Bridge Award for a Long Span bridge from the American Institute of Steel Construction Inc. Hoffstadt Creek is not the only tall bridge on Route 504. Nearby Cow Creek bridge is also high at 260 feet.

Mount St. Helens climbing permits
In 2021 Mount St. Helens climbing permits are available through recreation.gov at 7:00 am on the first of each month for the following month, during the permit quota season, ending October 31. This is a change from previous years. The number of permits available per day during the permit quota season was adjusted for 2021 to reduce congestion and user conflicts at parking areas, facilities, and on the mountain during Covid. There will be 110 permits per day available May 15–October 31. Un-needed permits may be refunded up to seven days before a climb and put back into the permit system for resale, so check recreation.gov throughout the season for newly available permits. *Remember that a valid federal Recreation Pass is required at Climber’s Bivouac trailhead. Get a climbing permit via recreation.gov: https://www. recreation.gov/permits/4675309. Learn more about the route, safety and requirements: https://www. mshinstitute.org/explore/climbing-permits/
Windy Ridge Interpretive Site
Located just five miles from Mount St. Helens, Windy Ridge Interpretive Site provides a close-up view of the volcano’s crater and a breathtaking panorama of a landscape radically changed during the 1980 eruption and landslide. Below lies Spirit Lake, with its floating log mat of huge trees swept into it during the eruption. Beyond, view a plain of pumice and ash and denuded hills, still fairly barren but greening with vegetation. Climb a 368-step sand ladder for a higher view. Read interpretive signs to learn about the events and people of the eruption. During summer, join an interpretive program presented at the site’s amphitheater. The site is accessible and memorable for all. Forest Road 99 is gated for the winter just past Wakepish Sno-Park. The road normally opens in late June or early July, depending on how quickly the snow melts out.

Ape Cave
Explore a chilly, pitch-black lava tube over two miles long. A short, paved, accessible trail beneath towering trees leads to a stairwell into the cave. The ¾ mile, one-way lower cave route is relatively easy and family friendly. For the more adventurous, the 1.5 mile upper cave route leads to a climb up an eight foot rock wall and scramble over rock piles, then an exit and a 1.5 mile above ground hike back to the parking lot. Ape Cave is the third longest lava tube (2.5 miles long) in North America and cave temperature is 42°F year-round. Make sure to bring two sources of light per person (a cell phone light is not bright enough), sturdy shoes, warm clothing, even in warm weather. In summer, Ape Headquarters, a small visitor center, offers lantern rentals, information and sales items. New in 2021 - Ape Cave was closed last spring in response to Covid. Ape Cave was scheduled to reopen to the public May 18 with a new timed reservation system. Timed reservation tickets are available for a $2 service on recreation.gov.
Willow Grove Park
West of Longview is a mile of sandy beach along the Columbia River and Willow Grove Park. This is a popular location year round to enjoy a number of outdoor activities. The 60-acre, Longview Port-run, day-use park features a walking trail, picnic areas with barbecue pits, boat launch and playground.

Nutty Narrows and Squirrel Bridges
After seeing many squirrels being flattened, Amos Peters decided to create a safe way for them to cross the busy Olympia Way thoroughfare near Civic Center in downtown Longview. The original skybridge was built in 1963. Today there are eight squirrel bridges in and around the Longview area. People travel from all over the world to view the original. Designed to look like a suspension bridge, the Nutty Narrows was a 60-foot-long span made of aluminum piping covered with a retired firehose to create the roadway. In 2014 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Check out the Nutty video: https://youtu.be/coNP-yt1uaY

Shay Locomotive
In 1997, John Chilson and Jeff Wilson began restoring the Shay Locomotive outside the Longview Public Library. It took the two volunteers and a host of others from ILWU Local No. 21 more than 2,000 hours to steam the 40-ton engine back to life. The Shay Locomotive hauled timber from 1924 to 1956, when logging trucks became the preferred method of movement. The Long-Bell Lumber Co., which founded Longview in the 1920s, donated the locomotive to the city in 1956. Over time it became rusted and vandalized, but thanks to the volunteer effort and funding from businesses, grants and personal donations it has been restored.
Gerhart Garden Park
Located along the river, Gerhart Gardens Park is easy on the mind. Soak in the beautiful scenery by boat, there’s a convenient launch, walk along the shore, or set up a picnic under a shady tree. Cast a line, either by land or water, both are acceptable. The 14 acres also include basketball courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts and a playground. And don’t forget Rover, let the pooch stretch his legs at the fenced, off-leash Gerhart dog park.

Longview Public Library
In 1922-23 the Long-Bell Lumber Company, under the leadership of Robert A. Long started building the “Planned City” of Longview. The public library was the first of Long’s gifts to the City of Longview. He and his wife gave $150,000 to the city to build a public library. A book drive helped create the original collection, and the Longs contributed an additional $10,000 to purchase new titles.

Cowlitz County Historical Museum
Do you know what a Shay locomotive sounds like? Have you ever seen film footage of the 1933, 1948, and 1996 floods? Or of men and women working in the Longview Fibre and Weyerhaeuser mills? Would you like to see hundreds of items relating to Cowlitz County history including Hulda Klager’s dress and a teacup that survived the 1902 Yacolt fire? All of these are in museum exhibits, plus an extensive collection of photos, artifacts, and books documenting the history of the county.
Columbia Theatre
The Columbia Theatre recently completed a 30-year journey from wrecking ball to 800-seat, state-ofthe-art performance hall. The story of its saving is a melodrama worthy of the silent films shown in the first years of the Columbia’s life. It goes something like this…The Columbia, which opened its doors in 1925, would be demolished and a new multiplex cinema would be erected in its place. In May 1980, crews and equipment were preparing for demolition. The eruption of Mount St. Helens diverted equipment to recovery efforts. When the ash settled, the Columbia was adopted by citizens and reopened in 2010. www.kelsolongviewchamber.org • 360.423.8400 • 27

Port of Kalama’s Transportation Interpretive Center
Port of Kalama’s Transportation Interpretive Center opened in November, 2014. Exhibits track Kalama’s first inhabitants, the Cowlitz Tribe, and the settlers that followed over the next 100 plus years including renowned Oregon Trail writer Ezra Meeker. Displays illustrate how Kalama’s particular landscape gave birth to a booming transportation system impacting the area both culturally and economically — ultimately transforming the area into its position today as an internationally-connected community. The Interpretive Center not only tells the story of how Kalama was settled, but treats visitors to artful display models and replicas. 28 • www.kelsolongviewchamber.org • 360.423.8400

Longview Outdoor Gallery
The Longview Outdoor Gallery has created a podcast audio tour to showcase the nearly two dozen pieces of art sprinkled throughout downtown Longview. The podcast is available on six platforms including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Each episode of the podcast corresponds with a specific sculpture and details the artist who built the piece and a bit about the piece itself. Because it is in podcast form, citizens and visitors wishing to learn about the artwork are not required to walk any one way, like a standard audio tour. Rather, they can walk or drive to look at whichever sculpture they choose, whenever they want. The map below and the link to the website, www.longviewlog.org, provides information about each sculpture and artist.

Fishing
The Cowlitz, Lewis, Toutle and Kalama rivers are among the most revered steelhead streams in the Northwest. The Columbia River offers reliable salmon and sturgeon runs. Try your luck with kokanee at Yale Reservoir, tiger muskies and Coho at Merwin Reservoir, and rainbow trout at Swift Reservoir. Silver Lake delivers excellent fishing for large mouth bass and is also a great spot to go after perch, bluegill and crappie. Lake Sacajawea, located in the middle of the City of Longview, has trout. Check the Fishing in Washington regulations pamphlet for limits and size requirements. Don’t forget a fishing license.
Tam O’Shanter Park

Port of Longview
Operating since 1921, the Port of Longview has eight marine terminals and waterfront industrial property spanning 835 acres on the deep-draft Columbia River, 66 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The Port plays an important role in economic development by creating jobs in manufacturing and international trade. The Port had contributed nearly $1 million to local projects that enhance waterfront recreation. As a business built on the water, the Port understands the need for riverfront access in support of recreation, commerce and emergency response. Supported projects: • Al Helenberg Memorial Boat Launch • Gerhart Gardens Boat Launch • Willow Grove Boat Launch Willow Grove Park and the Boat Launch remain open to the public. Remember to practice social distancing (keeping a minimum of 6 feet between you and others at all times) while at the Park to prevent the spread of Covid. Please be courteous to all park patrons and follow all posted park rules.
Life Jacket Program
In 2010, the Port partnered with the local Safe Kids Coalition, Home Depot and Cowlitz County to provide life jacket loaner boards at major swimming locations in the area. Because local lakes and rivers are extremely dangerous for recreational swimming, everyone should use a flotation device in the water. Signs on the boards encourage children to borrow a life jacket and return it to the board when they’re done for the next child to use. 40 • www.kelsolongviewchamber.org • 360.423.8400

TAKE A HIKE Mount St. Helens
Information from the Washington Trails Association Website www.wta.org In 1980, when Mount St. Helens erupted, no one could have dreamed of the magical hiking destination it would become. Over 200 miles of trails allow access to a landscape marked by summer wildflowers, forests, lakes, mounds of ash and a growing volcanic crater. Mount St. Helens National Monument offers short hikes and visitor centers for families; moderate hikes with grand views for day hikers; and extremely difficult terrain and solitude for backcountry enthusiasts.
Hiking Tips
Be prepared, hikers are exposed to sun, rain and wind. Bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and layers to adjust to the changing conditions. Carry lots of water. Water is scarce along many of the trails. Leave your pups at home. Due to the sensitive ecosystem, dogs are not allowed in many areas of the park.
Hummocks Trail
Location: Spirit Lake Highway Length: 2.3 miles, roundtrip Elevation Gain: 100 feet Thirty years ago this was an old growth forest. Not anymore. While life has returned to this valley, the landscape is now defined by towering mounds of ash, rock and mud. This is a great trail to gain an appreciation of the devastating effects of the eruption and to marvel at the vitality of nature’s return. The loop trail takes you by small ponds, the North Fork Toutle River and hummock mounds up to 500 feet high.
Eruption Trail
Location: Johnston Ridge Observatory Length: 0.5 miles, roundtrip Elevation Gain: 25 feet This is a barrier-free, paved hike of less than one mile from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The trail includes interpretive kiosks and 360 views of Mount St. Helens and the surrounding blast zone. 52 • www.kelsolongviewchamber.org • 360.423.8400
Guide Joelle Wilson
Harry’s Ridge
Location: Johnston Ridge Observatory Length: 8 miles, roundtrip Elevation Gain: 200 feet This is a classic, leaving from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The hillsides are alive with wildflowers at mid-summer, and the view from the end of Harry’s Ridge has you looking straight into the mouth of the crater. There’s a direct view of Loowit Falls and an emerging glacier. Plus, incredible views of Spirit Lake, Mount Adams and even Mount Hood on a clear day.
Meta Lake
Location: Randle Area Length: 1.3 miles, roundtrip Elevation Gain: 500 feet The trail to Meta Lake is short, sweet and paved – offering a barrier-free hike that is accessible for people in wheelchairs. Despite being in the blast zone, this area is defined by a young forest. These trees survived the eruption by being under a thick blanket of snow. The quiet lake is a fun destination for kids, especially in mid-summer when they can look for tadpoles and trout in its clear waters. www.kelsolongviewchamber.org • 360.423.8400 • 53

What: Tour de Blast When: June 19, 2021 - 6:30 am-5:00 pm Where: Toutle Lake High School to Johnston Ridge Observatory – Mount St Helens How: http://tourdeblast.com Cost: $70 without a shirt, $85 with a shirt, $10 to camp $100 after June 10. Why: Proceeds enable the Rotary Club of Longview to continue their community support programs that include Parks, support for at risk families and Literacy programs for school age children. The Club also supports Rotary International programs like polio eradication and ensuring access to clean water worldwide. Beautiful and Scenic! The Tour de Blast is an open highway, supported, out and back ride from Toutle Lake High School to the Johnston Ridge Observatory on Mount St Helens. Total distance is 82 miles and total elevation gain is over 6,000 feet. We offer three rest stops along the route providing ample snacks, water and electrolyte drink. We also provide SAG wagon support to get you back to the start in case of need - bike failure, body failure or whatever. It’s a great ride but it’s also physically challenging so be prepared. You do not need to ride the entire distance, turn around when you are ready and keep it a fun day. At the end of the ride there is a hot meal waiting for you. Camping is also available if you want to come the night before the ride and get an early start. This year we have had to make some COVID modifications: There will be no showers available, the hot meal is grab-and-go and the rest stops will be COVID aware (masks, social distancing, you know the drill…). We hope to be able to go back to our usual operations next year.

Go Fourth Festival
Go Fourth is the largest annual family-oriented festival in greater Cowlitz County. The festival, July 2-4, began in the 1960s and now draws more than 30,000 people to events culminating on July 4 with spectacular fireworks. Centered around Lake Sacajawea, the festival has become a time honored tradition in Longview. In addition to a Fourth of July fireworks show, the festival includes an American Lumberman’s Association-sanctioned Timbersport competition, including three World Championship events, Cardboard Boat Regatta, continuous daily entertainment, arts and crafts booths, parade and more than 20 food booths to tickle anyone’s taste buds.
Tour de Blast
First-timers and old pros, it’s time to get ready to ride June 19. The Longview Rotary Club once again presents Tour de Blast, a bicycle ride into the heart of the Mount St. Helens blast zone along Spirit Lake Memorial Highway as it winds its way up the Toutle Valley to the Johnston Ridge Viewpoint. Most of the course is on recently resurfaced highway with wide shoulders and excellent visibility. This is a fully supported ride with staffed rest areas (food and drink), bike repair, sag wagons and on-course motorcycle aid if things just don’t work out (flats, tired, sasquatch sighting…). We are committed to making this year’s event happen, but please understand we cannot guarantee that it will take place.

As our store becomes more successful, we hope to increase opportunities to open more housing options. As a local small business, we are Veteran, disabled and women owned, and we want to give back to those who gave so much and now need or want help. Our goal is to do our part in assisting with Veteran Homelessness. Our store is packed with everything from antique/vintage furniture and collectibles to unused newer items and a small selection of clothes. We even have an oddity section where we put things that we can’t classify but will surely delight every unique shopper. Your day will be a little brighter when you grab a friend and come on down for a visit to All You Want & More! We are open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Proceeds from our store go to the non-profit A Warriors Way

The Kalama Fair is a member of the Washington State Fair Association. The fair was originally incorporated in 1965 as a means to recognize the agriculture and other achievements of the rural families in the area.
