Mount St. Helens
Mount St. Helens or Louwala-Clough is an active stratovolcano located about 60 miles from the Kelso-Longview area. It features stunning landscapes and endless adventure. The mountain towered in the background of the two cities until May 18, 1980, when Mount St. Helens erupted. The explosion reduced the peak by 1,300 feet and leveled much of the surrounding area. A cloud of ash rose into the air 15 miles. Almost 150 square miles of forest was destroyed, a wall of water and mud flowed toward homes, and 57 people lost their lives. Forty-plus years later the landscape in what is now known as Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument continues to rebound and visitors are encouraged to learn more about the recovery taking place at the many visitor centers along Spirit Lake Highway (State Route 504). Each visitor center along the route provides insight into the disaster, including Johnston Ridge Observatory, where it is possible to peer into the crater on a clear day. The area also provides recreation opportunities where hiking trails and interpretive information intertwine. It is even possible to climb Mount St. Helens, though permits are required.

Spirit Lake/Mount St. Helens State Scenic Byway
Fun Guide
Also known as the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway, it is the only scenic byway in the United States that travels through a volcanic blast zone. Rebuilt and reopened in 1992, SR-504 is a 52-mile trek through what remains of the May 18, 1980, eruption.
Hoffstadt Creek Bridge
The largest and highest bridge along Washington State’s Spirit Lake Memorial Highway, Hoffstadt Creek is a deck truss bridge with a main span of 600 feet. Opened in 1991, the new highway was built to replace the original highway that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980. By taking an elevation high above the North Fork of the Toutle River, the new Route 504 is safer from potential debris run off and flood damage. The bridge won the 1996 Merit Bridge Award for a Long Span bridge from the American Institute of Steel Construction Inc. Hoffstadt Creek is not the only tall bridge on Route 504 – Cow Creek bridge is 260 feet.
Windy Ridge Interpretive Site
Located five miles from Mount St. Helens, Windy Ridge Interpretive Site provides a close-up view of the volcano’s crater and a breathtaking panorama of a landscape radically changed during the 1980 eruption and landslide. Below lies Spirit Lake, with its floating log mat of huge trees swept into it during the eruption. Beyond, view a plain of pumice and ash and denuded hills, still fairly barren but greening with vegetation. Climb a 368-step sand ladder for a higher view. Read interpretive signs to learn about the events and people of the eruption. During summer, join an interpretive program presented at the site’s amphitheater. The site is gated for the winter. The road normally opens in late June or early July, depending on snow melt.

Science and Learning Center at Coldwater The Science and Learning Center at Coldwater is a hands-on education center located seven miles from the crater of Mount St. Helens. It offers spectacular views and immersion into the volcanic landscape and world just outside in the heart of the blast zone. Ape Cave
Explore a chilly, pitch-black lava tube over two miles long. A short, paved, accessible trail beneath towering trees leads to a stairwell into the cave. The ¾ mile, one-way lower cave route is relatively easy and family friendly. For the more adventurous, the 1.5 mile upper cave route leads to a climb up an eight foot rock wall and scramble over rock piles, then an exit and a 1.5 mile above ground hike back to the parking lot. Ape Cave is the third longest lava tube (2.5 miles long) in North America and cave temperature is 42°F year-round. Make sure to bring two sources of light per person (a cell phone light is not bright enough), sturdy shoes and warm clothing, even in warm weather. In summer, Ape Headquarters, a small visitor center, offers lantern rentals, information and for sale items. Ape Cave typically opens in June. Since COVID there has been a timed reservation system. Timed reservation tickets are available for a $2 service on recreation.gov. Nearby Ape Canyon was the sight of the famous reported skirmish between miners and a family of Bigfoot back in 1924. The incident has become a Northwest legend.

Squirrel Bridges
After seeing many squirrels being flattened, Amos Peters decided to create a safe way for them to cross the busy Olympia Way thoroughfare near Civic Center in downtown Longview. The original skybridge was built in 1963. Today there are eight squirrel bridges in and around the Longview area. People travel from all over the world to view the original. Designed to look like a suspension bridge, the Nutty Narrows was a 60-foot-long span made of aluminum piping covered with a retired firehose to create the roadway. In 2014 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Shay Locomotive
In 1997, John Chilson and Jeff Wilson began restoring the Shay Locomotive outside the Longview Public Library. It took the two volunteers and a host of others from ILWU Local No. 21 more than 2,000 hours to steam the 40-ton engine back to life. The Shay Locomotive hauled timber from 1924 to 1956, when logging trucks became the preferred method of movement. The Long-Bell Lumber Co., which founded Longview in the 1920s, donated the locomotive to the city in 1956. Over time it became rusted and vandalized, but thanks to the volunteer effort and funding from businesses, grants and personal donations it has been restored.

Longview Public Library
In 1922-23 the Long-Bell Lumber Company, under the leadership of Robert A. Long started building the “Planned City” of Longview. The public library was the first of Long’s gifts to the City of Longview. He and his wife gave $150,000 to the city to build a public library. A book drive helped create the original collection, and the Longs contributed an additional $10,000 to purchase new titles.

Columbia Theatre
The Columbia Theatre recently completed a 30-year journey from wrecking ball to 800-seat, state-ofthe-art performance hall. The story of its saving is a melodrama worthy of the silent films shown in the first years of the Columbia’s life. It goes something like this…The Columbia, which opened its doors in 1925, would be demolished and a new multiplex cinema would be erected in its place. In May 1980, crews and equipment were preparing for demolition. The eruption of Mount St. Helens diverted equipment to recovery efforts. When the ash settled, the Columbia was adopted by citizens and reopened in 2010.

Port of Kalama
The Port of Kalama sits on the Columbia River. Port of Kalama’s industrial area includes five miles of riverfront property adjacent to the 43-foot, federally-maintained deep draft navigation channel of the Columbia River. The Port is served by the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroads. This excellent transportation infrastructure makes the Port of Kalama ideally suited for businesses of all kinds. The Port of Kalama boasts miles of riverfront playground, beaches, public parks and marina, a vibrant community of antiques, shops and restaurants, and a rich small-town culture. As a key player in the Kalama community, the Port is responsible for enhancing public recreational opportunities.
Port of Kalama’s Transportation Interpretive Center
Port of Kalama’s Transportation Interpretive Center opened in November, 2014. Exhibits track Kalama’s first inhabitants, the Cowlitz Tribe, and the settlers that followed over the next 100 plus years including renowned Oregon Trail writer Ezra Meeker. Displays illustrate how Kalama’s particular landscape gave birth to a booming transportation system impacting the area both culturally and economically — ultimately transforming the area into its position today as an internationally-connected community. The Interpretive Center not only tells the story of how Kalama was settled, but treats visitors to artful display models and replicas. www.kelsolongviewchamber.org • 360.423.8400 • 31

Longview Outdoor Gallery
In September 2011, the first installation of 11 loaned sculptures was installed on Commerce Avenue in historic downtown Longview. Longview Outdoor Gallery’s (LOG) goal was to raise money to purchase the most popular piece via “People’s Voice” balloting. LOG has installed new temporary sculptures every two years, and, has added 20 sculptures to the Longview Public Art Collection. LOG installed eight new temporary sculptures downtown in September 2021. These pieces will stay in place for two years. For several years LOG has been preparing for the city’s centennial, gathering 23 pieces – “23 by 23.” Following in R.A. Long’s footsteps, LOG has deepened the downtown cultural landscape for generations of future visitors. The map on the next page and the link to the website provides information about each sculpture and artist.

The Longview Outdoor Gallery has created a podcast audio tour to showcase the nearly two dozen pieces of art sprinkled throughout downtown Longview. The podcast is available on six platforms including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Each episode of the podcast corresponds with a specific sculpture and details the artist who built the piece and a bit about the piece itself. Because it is in podcast form, citizens and visitors wishing to learn about the artwork are not required to walk any one way, like a standard audio tour. Rather, they can walk or drive to look at whichever sculpture they choose, whenever they want. Follow the Longview Outdoor Gallery Sculpture Podcast QR code: Connect to the podcasts here

TAKE A HIKE Mount St. Helens
Information from the Washington Trails Association Website www.wta.org In 1980, when Mount St. Helens erupted, no one could have dreamed of the magical hiking destination it would become. Over 200 miles of trails allow access to a landscape marked by summer wildflowers, forests, lakes, mounds of ash and a growing volcanic crater. Mount St. Helens National Monument offers short hikes and visitor centers for families; moderate hikes with grand views for day hikers; and extremely difficult terrain and solitude for backcountry enthusiasts.
Hiking Tips
Be prepared, hikers are exposed to sun, rain and wind. Bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and layers to adjust to the changing conditions. Carry lots of water. Water is scarce along many of the trails. Leave your pups at home. Due to the sensitive ecosystem, dogs are not allowed in many areas of the park.
Hummocks Trail
Location: Spirit Lake Highway Length: 2.3 miles, roundtrip Elevation Gain: 100 feet Thirty years ago this was an old growth forest. Not anymore. While life has returned to this valley, the landscape is now defined by towering mounds of ash, rock and mud. This is a great trail to gain an appreciation of the devastating effects of the eruption and to marvel at the vitality of nature’s return. The loop trail takes you by small ponds, the North Fork Toutle River and hummock mounds up to 500 feet high.
Eruption Trail
Location: Johnston Ridge Observatory Length: 0.5 miles, roundtrip Elevation Gain: 25 feet This is a barrier-free, paved hike of less than one mile from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The trail includes interpretive kiosks and 360 views of Mount St. Helens and the surrounding blast zone. 52 • www.kelsolongviewchamber.org • 360.423.8400
Fun Guide Joelle Wilson
Harry’s Ridge
Location: Johnston Ridge Observatory Length: 8 miles, roundtrip Elevation Gain: 200 feet This is a classic, leaving from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The hillsides are alive with wildflowers at mid-summer, and the view from the end of Harry’s Ridge has you looking straight into the mouth of the crater. There’s a direct view of Loowit Falls and an emerging glacier. Plus, incredible views of Spirit Lake, Mount Adams and even Mount Hood on a clear day.
Meta Lake
Location: Randle Area Length: 1.3 miles, roundtrip Elevation Gain: 500 feet The trail to Meta Lake is short, sweet and paved – offering a barrier-free hike that is accessible for people in wheelchairs. Despite being in the blast zone, this area is defined by a young forest. These trees survived the eruption by being under a thick blanket of snow. The quiet lake is a fun destination for kids, especially in mid-summer when they can look for tadpoles and trout in its clear waters. www.kelsolongviewchamber.org • 360.423.8400 • 53

REAL ESTATE AGENT
★★★★★ ★★★★★ Elisha was amazing every step of the way! She was quick with all responses and worked miracles for us! This was our first time buying a home and to say we had no clue what we were doing is an understatement. She walked us through everything start to finish; called and explained things when I felt overwhelmed with the process; and recommended an amazing team of people (from insurance, finance, plumbers, inspectors and electricians) that got the job done! Our closing was insanely fast and we couldn’t have done it without her! Truly grateful and very pleased! Highly recommend her and her team! J. Clutter
www
We used Elisha to sell our home. She was excellent! She knows the business and has a vast network of professionals to help with every need you may have with selling. She helped us set up a pre-inspection so we knew what was potentially an issue with our home before we listed. She held an open house and worked the weekend showing and answering questions. I have never had such amazing customer service from a realtor. It was the best transaction by far! I highly recommend her! D. Woods

Celebrating 100 Years!
R.A. Long, sporting his signature hat, had a vision when he arrived in the area. It included the lumber mill and a planned city for its workers. Built with private funding, the plan was for the city to grow inward along organized lines with areas designated for business, industry and residential. The vision became a reality July 1923 when the city of Longview was dedicated. Big plans are coming together for a year-long celebration. Look for the events to start kicking off in 2022 and running into the new year.
