he Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce has a long tradition of providing members with information on matters that impact business as well as outstanding opportunities to make new business connections. Business After Hours continues to be the most popular networking setting among chamber members. Each month host businesses close the doors to the public to provide fellow members a tour of their business and the services they offer. Traditionally held on the third Tuesday of the month, Business After Hours continues to provide members with a relaxed social setting for making new business connections while keeping in touch with long established business associates.

Quarterly Membership Luncheons are designed to inform members on issues of importance facing the local business community. f you have been in business awhile, your “visual picture” of a Chamber of Commerce will probably be quite different from that of someone just entering the business world. Traditional Chambers tended to focus on what was generally called the “3 P’s:” Parades, Pageants and Pancake breakfasts. Those were the good ol’ days when Chambers functioned mostly as the business community’s social club and provided the civic pride that was found in most small towns and cities across the country.

Or, the Chamber was the remote extension of local government, most likely a county board or commission located some distance from the town or village the Chamber was in. You needed a building permit? See the Chamber of Commerce. Need roads fixed? Talk to the Chamber. Want a representative on the Zoning Commission? Get the Chamber’s backing. In fact, some Chambers continue to serve in this fashion in some of the more rural parts of the country. But today, those Chambers that are most successful in representing their business members are those that transition with the times and assumed new responsibilities that more specifically meet the changing needs of those businesses. They also successfully balance these efforts and programming between the small, medium and large sized businesses that make up their membership demographics. So just what is a “modern Chamber” and what does it do? The Western Association of Chamber Executives, the professional group providing education, resources and assistance to Chamber staff, has been asking that question of Chamber business members for the past twenty-five years. And here is what those business people have been saying: First and foremost, businesses want their Chamber to create a successful economic environment within the community; an environment that will enable any business willing to put forth the effort, skill and professionalism

This means searching for opportunities to expand markets, export products and attract new customers into the area to spend their money. Quarterly Membership Meetings provide an opportunity to network and learn about emerging business trends in a social atmosphere. The annual Golf Tournament provides those same opportunities but in a setting which focuses more on having a good time. And, the Kelso Longview Chamber is constantly seeking new, effective ways to promote networking. The fourth most important thing business members have indicated they want their Chambers to do is to represent their interests before city councils, county governments and state legislatures. Not that these businesspeople are not capable of speaking their minds in front of elected officials, but most are just too involved with running their business and keeping them profitable. Through the Kelso Longview Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee and Monday Morning Legislative Briefing Breakfasts during the Washington State legislative session, our business community’s voice is heard loud and clear by our elected representatives in Olympia.

he Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce has five standing committees that are always looking for members interested in the same goal who would like to take an active role in the chamber.

Business Community

• Coordinate the Chamber’s Scholarship Program by setting criteria, selecting recipients and also determine ways to help fund the program. • Assist and help maintain and strengthen the Chamber’s relationship with area educational boards.

Bordered by the deep river channels of the Columbia River on the West and the Cascade Mountain Range on the East, Cowlitz County is a strategic hub interconnected by interstates, railways, alongside major shipping ports and strategically located between Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon. Given the importance of location, it is easy to see why Kelso, Longview and the surrounding area are home to a diverse and growing business base.

Ambassador Committee

• Serve as host at all chamber functions. • Conduct member ribbon cuttings that are scheduled by the chamber. • Assist with member networking events. • Work closely with the chamber’s Membership & Marketing Director and give assistance as needed. • Assist members in obtaining maximum value from their investment.

Chamber Education Foundation

• Develop, implement and support programs that promote relationships between business and education. • Coordinate the STET Education Awards, recognizing employer organizations and individuals that have implemented programs for continuing education, including technology, for their employees. • Coordinate the Crystal Apple Awards, recognizing excellence in education, specifically among teachers, administrators and staff.

• Advocate for business at every level of government. • Promote policies and laws that will assist in the success of business. • Conduct an annual survey of membership to determine areas of concern. • Develop priority areas of action which address issues that would impact business. • Cooperatively conduct legislative, candidate and other forums for the membership and community. • Continue to promote involvement by business and obtain member input on key issues. • Provide information to members on issues. • Ensure that the chamber is providing appropriate resources to address its programs. • Oversee good fiscal policy. • Work closely with City, County and Washington Department of Transportation officials on improvements needed for streets, roads and highways. • Keep Chamber members informed on all transportation issues. • Support enhancements of entry ways into Kelso/Longview including appropriate signs, planting, etc. • Invite guest speakers to discuss various transportation issues. • Provide input to local, regional and statewide committees/organizations that are responsible for recommending future transportation requirements.

Columbia Theatre

Built in 1925, the theater was a priority of Longview’s founders. The 1,000-seat theater narrowly escaped demolition in 1980, being purchased by the City of Longview for restoration as a performing arts center. The Italian Renaissance style was restored to its original state, with its lush detailed murals and fixtures, and the chandeliers hanging over the balcony.

Cowlitz County Museum

The Cowlitz County Historical Museum was founded in 1949 to interpret and showcase the history of Cowlitz County and Southwest Washington. Visit the Cowlitz County Historical Museum and discover how the land and rivers of Cowlitz County have shaped the lives of people for hundreds of years.

Cowlitz Regional Conference Center / Expo Center

The 47-acre multi-purpose facility is capable of hosting a variety of events from small group meetings and receptions to equestrian and livestock events, product shows, automotive events and larger multi-day conferences. The Cowlitz County Fair is a four-day annual event held each summer in late July or early August. It is, to date, the largest single event held on the Expo Center grounds.

Originally built in 1911, the Kelso Train Depot has undergone extensive renovations to become the region’s first multi-modal transportation center, serving as a hub for several modes of transportation, including passenger rail service, commercial bus service and the intercity bus service.

Lake Sacajawea

Lake Sacajawea is a 120-acre scenic refuge that includes a manmade lake in downtown Longview. Trout are stocked in the lake in the spring and summer, making it an attractive place for young folks with fishing poles. As for the park itself, it hosts a number of opportunities. Take a relaxing stroll through the Japanese Garden, listen to an evening outdoor concert or have a picnic or nap on the spacious lawns. A graveled path is the best route in town to walk or run; it’s four miles all around the lake.

Longview Civic Center

Several of Longview’s most significant buildings are around this plaza in the center of town. When the

city was founded in the 1920’s, leaders insisted on a consistent architectural theme for the Longview Library, Monticello Hotel and the Post Office.

The building was a personal gift from R. A. Long, founder of Longview. It represents the importance that the founder placed on the city’s cultural and intellectual growth. An added feature to the park-like setting is a beautiful rose garden planted on the Library’s east grounds.

The desires of the Convention were met favorably in Congress, but it was decided that the state named Columbia might be confused with the preexisting District of Columbia. The state was instead named Washington, in honor of our first president. Today, a monument to the Monticello Convention stands not far from the Longview Civic Center.

Nutty Narrows Squirrel Bridge

Longview Library

The Monticello Hotel was the first permanent structure to be completed in Longview, and opened in 1923. The hotel has been a focal point for community and social events over the years.

Longview Main Post Office

The Longview Main Post Office is an integral part of Longview Civic Center. Constructed as a Depression Era Public Works project, the Post Office was built to aid the local economy during a period of national emergency.

R. A. Long Park

Originally named Jefferson Square, it was constructed in the winter of 1922. The surrounding buildings were designed to face the park, giving focus to the central core. A raised terrace to the west contains a bust of R. A. Long, the city’s founder. A sundial is also displayed on the promenade leading from the terrace. Stone historic markers are sited at each corner of the park.

Built in 1963 by an animal lover, Amos Peters, it is reportedly the only squirrel bridge in the world, and something no Longview tourist should miss. It is located in the Longview Civic Center near Washington Way, in front of the Longview Library.

Cowlitz Community Farmers Market

Freshness is in supply each summer, with the appearance of the Farmers Market downtown and at the Cowlitz Regional Conference Center. A wide variety of local produce, homemade crafts and live entertainment create a fun, enjoyable atmosphere for all

Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument

Tam O’Shanter Park

Developed in 1958, this 38-acre multi-use park isn’t just the home of the Kelso’s Highlander Festival held in September of each year. The park is equipped with a 6-hoop basketball court, two horseshoe pits, and multi-purpose fields for both adult and youth sports, such as softball, baseball and soccer. A wide graveled path bordering the Coweeman and Cowlitz Rivers offer 6 miles for jogging, biking or just a leisurely stroll. Tam O’Shanter Park has an inviting atmosphere for family outings, with covered areas to picnic, and play area for the young or young at heart.
