Don't Stop Believin' We're giving you one BIG reason to stop by the Visitor Center Yep, that's us, Chamber staff, hangin' with Sasquatch. He's one, large, lovable dude, but he's a huge distraction. The big guy is always underfoot, and who knew when he moved in a couple years ago he'd be such a colossal attraction. The Pacific Northwest is known for sightings of the hairy beast, especially down here in the Longview-Kelso area, but our Squatch has become a celebrity. Visitors, and locals, stop in and snap selfies with him, or we take the photos for them. We love it! We meet the nicest people from all over the world and offer them tips on the other fabulous things to do and see in our area. Best part, all this fame has not gone to his head. Don't get us wrong, the size of his head is impressive, but so is his heart. If you are here during the summer or fall, we invite you to come back and visit us January 27, 2018. You see, our Big Foot's popularity has grown so much, we created a festival around him – sQuatch Fest. Our inaugural event in 2017 brought 1,400 "believers" to the Cowlitz Regional Conference Center. We made sure they had plenty to do and see. There were expert scientists who shared their research; vendors who were big on Big Foot; age-appropriate Squatch activities in the Kids Cave; and a place where folks could swap stories about sightings over a brew, or two, like Snow Beast Imperial Milk Stout created locally by Five Dons. If you need more proof you were here, the Visitor Center is your go-to for T-shirts, souvenirs and Sasquatch guides. Chamber Ambassadors – The Red Coats Chamber Ambassadors, or as we refer to them "The Red Coats," are an integral part of the Chamber of Commerce. Ambassadors are the mainstay of Chamber volunteers. They juggle busy professional careers while making time to assist the Chamber at a variety of events year long. Easily identified by their red blazers, you will find them meeting and greeting at our numerous events, welcoming new members at ribbon cuttings, assisting with community programs and having a great time. The Chamber The Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce has a tradition of providing members with information on matters that impact business as well as outstanding opportunities to make business connections. Our role today is to create a successful economic environment within the community for our members; promote the community; create new and effective networking opportunities to increase business for members; and represent members interests at local and state government.

Supporting Youth In 2016, the Chamber's Education Foundation Committee and Lower Columbia Professionals Committee awarded scholarships to selected local high school seniors totalling $18,500.

Education Foundation Committee The Chamber's Education Foundation Committee develops, implements and supports programs that promote relationships between business and education. The Committee coordinates the Business and Education Awards each May, recognizing employer organizations and individuals that provide continuing education, including technology, for their employees. The event also recognizes excellence in education, specifically among teachers, administrators and support staff. Coordinating the Chamber's scholarship program by setting criteria, selecting recipients and determining ways to help fund the program is also part of the Committee's role, as is assisting in maintaining and strengthening the Chamber's relationship with area education boards.

If nutty fun is your goal then head to Squirrel Fest. The annual August festival has become Longview's marquee, good-time, family event. The city has embraced its squirrel-friendly reputation. There are five squirrel bridges around the city, one with its own live squirrel cam. www.lvsquirrelfest.com

Fireworks & Festival

Longview’s Go Fourth Festival touts itself as the largest, family-oriented festival in greater Cowlitz County, drawing more than 30,000 people to the shores of Lake Sacajawea for the Fourth of July celebration. Started in the 1960s, the celebration traditionally includes concerts, sporting events, the Cardboard Boat Regatta, parade and a spectacular fireworks display. www.gofourthfestival.org

Looking for a challenge – Tour de Blast, the 82-mile route from Toutle to Johnston Ridge Observatory at Mount St. Helens, takes riders into the heart of the blast zone with a total elevation gain of 6,240 feet. The course is divided into three levels: beginner, a 33-mile trip; intermediate, 54-mile trip; and advanced the 82-mile trek. The ride is hosted by the Longview Rotary Club. Cowlitz County Fair

If it's July, it's time for the Cowlitz County Fair with grandstand entertainment, a professional rodeo, carnival, youth market sale, food, vendors, FFA and 4H exhibits and much more. Each September, the City of Kelso honors its Scottish roots with clans, kilts and bagpipes at the Highlander Festival. A city of 36,000, Longview traces its roots to founder R.A. Long, president of the Long-Bell Lumber Company, who built a mill along the Columbia River and in the early 1920s Longview to accommodate its workers. Squirrel Crossing

Built in 1963 by the late Amos Peters, the Nutty Narrows Bridge is a local landmark and listed on the city's historic register. The original 60-foot structure, which stretches across Olympia Way near Civic Center Circle, was built to give squirrels a safe way to cross the busy road. In 1983, the bridge was spruced up and rededicated. It is now one of five in the city and the focal point for the Squirrel Fest celebration.

Waltz Through Time

Stroll through Longview's history by heading downtown to R.A. Long Park and Civic Circle. Named for the city founder, R.A. Long Park is a National Register Historic District. The park was designed to be the center of the city. Its roads extend out from the circle with governmental and cultural anchors like the Monticello Hotel, Longview Public Library, and the United States Post Office. Each building showcasing its original architecture and character from the 1920s. Surprise! Surprise! Inside Civic Circle is a piece of Plymouth Rock, a sundial and a number of memorials. Don't forget to check out the Chief Lelooska totem pole. A few blocks in any direction and there's more to see like the Monticello Convention Site on Tennant Way where settlers petitioned Congress to separate from Oregon at the Columbia River forming the Washington Territory, later Washington State. Wander off between Kessler Boulevard and the Monticello Hotel toward the Old West Side to view English Tudor, Dutch Colonial and Spanish Revival homes designed by world-renown architects for the movers and shakers during the birth of Longview. Also on Kessler at Washington Way sits the grand Community Church, on the city's historic register. Built in 1926, it resembles a Gothic revival castle right down to the gargoyles that keep watch from their perches, and the beautiful stained glass.

Full Steam Ahead

In 1997, John Chilson and Jeff Wilson began restoring the Shay Locomotive outside the Longview Public Library. It took

the two volunteers and a host of others from ILWU Local No. 21 more than 2,000 hours to steam the 40-ton engine back to life. The Shay Locomotive hauled timber from 1924 to 1956, when logging trucks became the preferred method of movement. The Long-Bell Lumber Co., which founded Longview in the 1920s, donated the locomotive to the city in 1956. Over time it became rusted and vandalized, but thanks to the volunteer effort and funding from businesses, grants and personal donations it has been restored.

Peanuts, Cracker Jack, the crack of a bat and the roar of a crowd are part of the atmosphere on a summer night watching the Cowlitz Black Bears take to the diamond at Story Field on the Lower Columbia College campus. This West Coast League team features some of the country's top collegiate players and serves as the foundation for a future Major League career. Travel Hub

Kelso is the area's transportation hub. Conveniently located only a half mile from Interstate 5, sits the Southwest Washington Regional Airport. Started as a grass landing strip on a dairy farm, the approximately 109 acres of land is now owned by the City of Kelso and has been undergoing a revitalization. Downtown Kelso is also home to an Amtrak station. The Kelso Train Depot, originally built in 1911 as part of Burlington Northern, has undergone extensive renovation to become the region's first multimodal transporta-

Longview's Lake Sacajawea Park is a respite for locals and visitors. Developed in 1924, the park serves as the centerpiece for the city. The Johnston Ridge Observatory often hosts concerts during the summer months. Last year the Lower Columbia College Symphonic Band brought its 40-plus members to entertain. Each performance is an outdoor celebration with a spectacular back drop.

Fishing, hunting, cross country skiing, biking and hiking are all available in the Mount St. Helens area. Mountain bike riding near Mount St. Helens is some of the best in the country â&#x20AC;&#x201C; because it's a Monument and not a National Park you can still ride on most of the trails. Give elk viewing a try. The majestic creatures are best seen through the telescopes at the Forest Learning Center. In the spring hundreds of elk can be seen browsing on the mud flow.

Patty's Place at 19 Mile House offers fresh cobbler. The restaurant, on the Spirit Lake Highway past the Mount St. Helens Visitor Center, is open daily May-October.

Science is Fun

Mount St. Helens is a living laboratory with a variety of education programs to engage visitors of all ages in interactive, science-based education. The Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center is a collaborative effort of the Mount St. Helens Institute and the U.S. Forest Service Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The Mount St. Helens Institute's mission is to connect people with nature through science, the arts and adventure recreation. It helps visitors connect with the volcano through education, exploration, science research and stewardship. It offers programs for students, teachers and adults, and summer programs. Guided exploration programs are wonderful opportunities to hike, climb and explore the landscape with knowledgeable guides. For those interested in giving their time, there are also volunteer opportunities. In the Spotlight

The historic Columbia Theatre opened as a vaudeville venue and movie house in 1925. After years of decline, the theater escaped what would have been a tragic ending in 1980 when excavation and demolition equipment heading toward the theater was diverted to help with the cleanup following the Mount St. Helens eruption. In the interim, a group of visionaries saved and restored the historic building. Today, the vibrant 1,000-seat theater hosts musicals, concerts, comedy and children's theatre. The theater earned a Historical Preservation Officers Award from Washington State for outstanding achievement in historic preservation. Its counterpart is the Kelso Theater Pub/Backstage Cafe. The Cowlitz, Lewis, Toutle and Kalama rivers are among the most revered steelhead streams in the Northwest. The Columbia River offers reliable salmon and sturgeon runs. Try your luck with kokanee at Yale Reservoir, tiger muskies and Coho at Merwin Reservoir, and rainbow trout at Swift Reservoir. Silver Lake delivers excellent fishing for large mouth bass and is also a great spot to go after perch, bluegill and crappie. Lake Sacajawea, located in the middle of the City of Longview, has trout. The kids will go ape over these lava tubes. Formed about 2,000 years ago from a volcanic eruption, Ape Cave is the longest known lava tube in the continental United States, 12,810 feet. Cowboy Up Rocking Horse Ranch, located in Kelso, offers a variety of trail rides through beautiful forests with mountain scenery. Get up close and personal with views of Mount St. Helens, and more. The folks there also offer lessons, events and more. Eco Park Resort, just north of Mount St. Helens, offers guided horse tours into the back country of Mount St. Helens or on their own trails. If you are interested in camping after a ride, check into Kalama Horse Camp which features campsites.

There are dozens of places in the area to pitch a tent or pull in an RV in Cowlitz, Pacific, Wahkiakum, Lewis, Clark and Skamania counties. A few with close proximity to Longview and Kelso come to mind. County Line Park on Ocean Beach Highway, Brookhollow RV Park, Silver Cove RV Resort and Cedars RV Park. Seaquest State Park is a 475-acre, year-round camping park near Mount St. Helens. The beautifully forested park, with large secondary old growth trees, is situated off Spirit Lake Highway across from Silver Lake and the Mount St. Helens visitor center.
