Keltbray have long been committed to adding Social Value by taking direct responsibility for delivering on our promises to consult, improve and leave a positive legacy in the communities in which we work. We firmly believe that embedding Social Value into all our activities can make a real change, redefining sustainable development.

A Message from our Executive Chairman & Owner

“Social value holds a special significance for us at Keltbray, and it is a subject I care deeply about. As a company, we believe in the importance of giving back to the communities, residents, and charities that form the heart of the areas where we work. Supporting these groups is not just part of our mission but an essential aspect of how we operate across the country.

This Social Impact Report highlights the incredible efforts and commitment of our teams. This year's results are our highest to date, and showcases the meaningful impact we’ve achieved through collaboration with our customers and partners. Together, we’ve accomplished great things, and I am proud of the role we continue to play in creating lasting benefits for the communities we serve.

A Message from our Head of Social Impact

“It is increasingly important that we use our influence in the industry to support the communities and environment in which we operate. Knowing that people are facing difficult times further strengthens our commitment and responsibility to deliver a positive impact on the community.

Social impact at Keltbray is fully integrated across all areas of our business, as reflected in our achievements this year. Our unwavering commitment to supporting the people who live, work, learn, and play near our projects has led to some of our largest community investment initiatives to date. This success was driven by sharing knowledge and resources and made possible by the hard work of our incredible teams.

I am excited to share our Social Impact Report 2024, to reflect on this year’s activities and, more importantly, to look ahead at what we can achieve in the future.

Thank you to everyone who supported our efforts and collaborated with us this year.

Keltbray’s Social Value delivery is driven by and aligned to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Recognising that we create greater impact when we collaborate and contribute to shared objectives that support people and planet. Collaboration has been a key theme for us in 2024, working with our clients and communities to generate value.

To measure our social value, we utilise Thrive, a platform that uses the Impact Evaluation Standard (IES) to calculate the added benefit of our activities as a monetary figure. The IES enables us to bring consistency and additional rigour to our auditing and reporting, encompassing economic improvement, sustainability, and community aspects. The IES framework is a collection of metrics and guidance which has been developed by industry experts in accordance with the UK Government’s Green Book Guidance and which aligns directly to, and builds upon, the UK Government’s Social Value Model including Procurement Policy Note 06/20.

This year we have continued to build on our community partnership approach, maximising our support through large social value projects. Our self-delivery capabilities allow us to donate professional services to community organisations, creating real, sustainable impact.

Social Value is created when a conscious effort is made by people and organisations where the effect of their actions excite social change. These can be seen as adding social value by contributing to the long-term wellbeing and resilience of individuals, communities and the society in general.

The Triangle Gardens

Keltbray partnered with Global Generation to start the build for The Triangle Gardens, the charity's first permanent garden space in central London.

Leveraging its expertise in engineering and formwork, Keltbray helped lay the foundations for the three planned buildings, bringing a team from its London Museum site. This project championed ecological and social change; supporting Global Generation to continue their valuable work.

Global Generation is an educational charity that works with local people and businesses. Using their gardens in central London, the charity offer activities for the community such as urban food growing, carpentry, cooking and storytelling; promoting social integration within the community.

The Triangle Site, located in Camden, marks the beginning of a 1,000-year vision for the charity, and Keltbray was honoured to be part of this journey from the start.

Keltbray has previously collaborated with Global Generation on other projects, such as The Paper Garden in Southwark, by donating equipment and volunteering to support the sustainable construction methods of their garden buildings. Through this connection, Keltbray was asked to assist in establishing the charity's first permanent space.

“I want to extend a massive thank you from Global Generation for Keltbray’s work on our foundations. It has meant that we can get going with the project and I really appreciate all the work you have done for us. The Carpenters, who were on-site, were lovely to work with and I would really like to extend a personal thanks to them.

The team started discussions and planning for the building back in February 2024, and in August 2024, the Keltbray team began on-site by helping to lay the foundations for the three planned buildings. The works also included transporting plant, carrying out enabling works, building concrete shutters for the three foundation slabs, placing the rebar, and finishing the slab. The project was successfully concluded in four weeks.

Keltbray is very proud to have supported Global Generation in building the foundations for this brilliant project. This is one of Keltbray's largest community projects to-date, with £30,000 of social value generated and 970 volunteering hours contributed to making this project a success.

“This was a huge community project and required a lot of planning to ensure we delivered what was needed for Global Generation whilst maintaining our commitments here. A real team effort was key, and we all put in the work to make sure the Triangle Site build started off well. It is important to give something back and if we can do that, then we are doing things right.

Bee Unique Autism

In 2023, Keltbray partnered with Bee Unique Autism as part of its work on the Sellafield project. This collaboration not only provided vital funding for Bee Unique Autism's initiatives but also encouraged a strong sense of community involvement and social responsibility.

Bee Unique Autism is an award winning charity, based in West Cumbria, committed to supporting, embracing, and educating individuals diagnosed with Autism, as well as those involved in their medical diagnosis. The charity create safe and sensory-friendly environments, organise events, and offer social activities.

One initiative is Bee Unique FC, a football team supporting the abilities and potential of children with hidden disabilities.

As part of Keltbray’s social value initiatives with the charity, the company sponsored the Bee Unique FC team and contributed towards their kit and training equipment. Keltbray also supported by sponsoring the Bee Unique Autism Cumbria SEND Games and the Pan Disability Football Tournament. The sponsorship covered the costs of trophies, medals, and referees.

“What Keltbray has done for Bee Unique Autism and Bee Unique FC, is truly amazing. They have sponsored our under-12s Pan Disability football team with a full strip and football jackets. With Keltbray’s support, we managed to add a Pan Disability football tournament to Cumbria SEND Games, where Keltbray provided medals and trophies for the children. Thank you again!

The funds raised supported Bee Unique's incredible work and also benefited two local schools, St. Benedict's and Mayfield School, where the event took place.

Keltbray's own work force loved being part of the events, attending and showing their support and handing out medals to the children.

Keltbray is very proud of its partnership with Bee Unique and it represents the business’ commitment to delivering social value and giving back to the local communities in which its projects are based.

When we arrived in Cumbria to begin our journey at Sellafield, I wanted to find a local charity that we could support as a long-term effort. Our first involvement was providing Martin and his team with two new sets of football strips for their firstever pan-disability football teams. From there, we supported one of their tournaments and made other donations. We plan to continue this support with future campaigns to raise money for Bee Unique.

Peabody Lavender Replanting

1 Victoria Street is a revolutionary building in central London, built in 1965. Covering approximately 50,000 square metres, it initially housed the Board of Trade.

Now, the building is undergoing a major transformation into a sustainable commercial hub. Keltbray has played a key role in this project, leveraging its expertise in sustainability and circular economy principles.

As part of Keltbray’s commitment to environmental and community impact, it partnered with the Peabody Estate near Abbey Orchard Street, to replant lavenders from the site, donating them to local garden spaces around the neighbouring estate; one of which residents have named the BeeFriendly Café.

The idea was warmly received by the community, as it was an excellent chance to repurpose the existing plants and avoid them going to waste.

To replant the lavenders, Keltbray assembled a volunteer team, made up of both Keltbray office and site staff and two local apprentices, partnered with local resident Marie who maintains the BeeFriendly Cafe.

Keltbray also donated 15 bags of topsoil to make sure the relocated lavender would continue to thrive in its new home.

Throughout the morning, Marie shared stories about the history of the local area and how she had seen so many changes to the buildings around them.

Additional plants were also shared with local school, St Matthew’s Primary, where the team revitalised their flower beds with donated topsoil.

The lavender replanting project from 1 Victoria Street to the Peabody Estate is an example of Keltbray’s commitment to biodiversity, strengthening community relations, and showcasing that construction sites can contribute positively to their surroundings.

“Thank you so much for saving the plants and helping us to move them across to the gardens. It was a lovely morning with many helping hands, and it was great fun to do it in the rain.

“ ”

Many Project Managers at Keltbray are looking to preserve important materials and boost biodiversity wherever possible. This is an opportunity to give back to the community while preserving the plants and building positive relations with neighbours. And who doesn’t love a bee?

Beatle Woods Day Nursery

The Keltbray HS2 Viaducts team had the privilege to support Beatle Woods, an inclusive outdoor nursery just outside of Birmingham. Beatle Woods reached out to Balfour Beatty Vinci's (BBV) through their community investment programme for help dealing with weatherrelated issues on their site. After seeing the site, BBV and Keltbray went above and beyond and helped to build a brand-new, weather-resistant cabin for the nursery, exceeding all expectations.

Beatle Woods is an inclusive day nursery for children aged 2 to 12. They provide a low-demand, self-structured experience that is transformative for children who are neurodivergent.

In August, Keltbray's HS2 Viaducts team, in partnership with BBV, had the opportunity to give back to the community through a rewarding project.

The initiative involved cleaning the Beatle Woods site and constructing a new cabin for staff and children. The newly built cabin is now weather-resistant and features a changing area, boot lockers, and a kitchen for organising packed lunches.

In addition, the team also added a sailing boat for the children to play in and refilled the outdoor library with books.

In just six days, the BBV, Keltbray, and Wentworth House Partnership teams completed the 'Big Build' project.

The initiative successfully generated £6,980 in social value, thanks to the contribution of 407 volunteer hours, donations of materials and professional services.

Keltbray believes in investing in local communities and is proud to support initiatives that bring about meaningful change.

“ “ ” ”

The building has exceeded all my expectations. I can’t wait to see the faces of the staff and the children when we return and to experience how this will impact our practice. It will have a massive effect on our ability to offer places to more children with "additional needs.

We, as construction professionals, get to create some iconic and inspiring structures in our careers, but this project, while simple in nature, will have such a positive impact on the children who will use it. I can honestly say this has to be one of the most inspiring and rewarding projects I have ever had the pleasure to work on.
