Fossil and Archaeological Evidence of the Lived Lives of Plio-Pleistocene children By April Nowell (University of Victoria) Draws on a range of evidence to examine the various roles of Paleolithic children.
PREHISTORY
GROWING UP IN THE ICE AGE
It is estimated that in prehistoric societies children comprised at least forty to sixty-five percent of the population, yet by default, our ancestral landscapes are peopled by adults who hunt, gather, fish, knap tools and make art. But these adults were also parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles (however they would have codified these kin relationships) who had to make space physically, emotionally, intellectually, and cognitively for the infants, children and adolescents around them. The economic, social, and political roles of Palaeolithic children are often understudied because they are assumed to be unknowable or negligible. Drawing on the most recent data from the cognitive sciences and from the ethnographic, fossil, archaeological, and primate records, Growing Up in the Ice Age challenges these assumptions. This volume is a timely and evidence-based look at the lived lives of Palaeolithic children and the communities of which they were a part. By rendering the “invisible” children visible, readers will gain a new understanding not only of the contributions that children have made to the biological and cultural entities we are today but also of the Palaeolithic period as whole. New Evidence from Archaeology and Historical Linguistics Edited by Birgit A. Olsen (University of Copenhagen), Thomas Olander (University of Copenhagen) and Kristian Kristiansen (University of Gothernburg)
PREHISTORY
TRACING THE INDO-EUROPEANS
Examines the origins, chronology and spread of Indo-European cultures. A longer blurb to fill the space better: Recent developments in aDNA have reshaped our understanding of later European prehistory, and at the same time also opened up for more fruitful collaborations between archaeologists and historical linguists. Two revolutionary genetic studies, published independently in Nature, 2015, showed that prehistoric Europe underwent two successive waves of migration, one from Anatolia consistent with the introduction of agriculture, and a later influx from the Pontic-Caspian steppes which without any reasonable doubt pinpoints the archaeological Yamnaya complex as the cradle of (Core-)Indo-European languages. Now, for the first time, when the preliminaries are clear, it is possible for the fields of genetics, archaeology and historical linguistics to cooperate in a constructive fashion to refine our knowledge of the Indo-European homeland, migrations, society and language. For the historical-comparative linguists, this opens up a wealth of exciting perspectives and new working fields in the intersections between linguistics and neighbouring disciplines, for the archaeologists and geneticists, on the other hand, the linguistic contributions help to endow the material findings with a voice from the past. The present selection of papers illustrates the importance of an open interdisciplinary discussion which will gradually help us in our quest of Tracing the Indo-Europeans.

PERSONAL ORNAMENTS IN PREHISTORY
Beads, Bracelets and other Adornments from the Palaeolithic to the Early Bronze Age By Emma L. Baysal (Trakya University, Turkey) Explores the human relationship with ornaments such as beads, bracelets, necklaces, and pendants. Beads, bracelets, necklaces, pendants and many other ornaments are familiar objects that play a fundamental role in personal expression and communication. This book considers how and why the human relationship with ornaments developed and continued over tens of thousands of years, from hunter-gatherer life in the cave to urban elites, from expedient use of natural resources to complex technologies. Evidence comes from archaeological sites across Turkey, the Near East and the Balkans. THE NEOLITHIC OF NORTHERN ENGLAND IN A NEW LIGHT Edited by Gill Hey (Oxford Archaeology) and Paul Frodsham
The latest research into the Neolithic settlement of northern England/southern Scotland. These papers highlight recent archaeological work in Northern England and Southern Scotland in the commercial, academic and community archaeology sectors, which have fundamentally changed our perspective on the Neolithic of the area. The papers cover a wide geographical area, from Lancashire north into the Scottish Lowlands, recognising the irrelevance of the England/ Scotland Border. They also take a broad chronological sweep, from the Mesolithic/Neolithic transition to the introduction of Beakers into the area.

A TASTE FOR GREEN
A Global Perspective on Ancient Jade, Turquoise and Variscite Exchange Edited by Carlos Rodríguez-Rellán (Universidad de Santiago de Compostela), Ben Nelson (Arizone State University) and Ramón Fábregas Valcarce (Universidad de Santiago de Compostela) Examines artefacts made from distinctive green rocks throughout prehistoric Europe and the Americas. Ancient societies often traded commodities that were considered valuable either for functional or symbolic reasons – or both. This book addresses the acquisition of jade, turquoise or variscite, which share a characteristic greenish colour and engaging appearance. Papers explore how, in addition to constituting economic transactions, these materials were also statements of social liaisons, personal capacities, and relation to places or to unseen forces. EMBRACING BELL BEAKER
Adopting new Ideas and Objects across Europe during the later 3rd Millennium BC (c. 2600-2000 BC) By Jos Kleijne (Kiel University) Investigates the adoption of the Bell Beaker phenomenon during the 3rd millennium BC. This book looks at how communities across Europe during the later 3rd millennium BC adopted and transformed the Bell Beaker phenomenon differently. By looking at these processes of change from the perspective of settlements and settlement material culture, an interpretation is given to the development of this phenomenon that is alternative to the currently prevailing migration models. LOCAL COMMUNITIES IN THE BIG WORLD OF PREHISTORIC NORTHWEST EUROPE
Edited by Corrie C. Bakels, Quentin P.J. Bourgeois, David R. Fontijn and Richard Jansen (University of Leiden) Explores how communities in prehistory, by shaping their landscape, carved out a place for themselves. Focuses on how local communities in prehistory defined themselves in relation to a bigger social world. Communities in the past managed to make a living in landscapes we tend to perceive as inconvenient, build complex and elaborate monuments with relatively simple tools, and by shaping their landscape carved out a place for themselves in a much bigger social world. These contributions underscore how small worlds can be big at the same time. ANALECTA PRAEHISTORICA LEIDENSIA

THE MYCENAEAN SETTLEMENT ON TSOUNGIZA HILL
By Mary K. Dabney (Bryn Mawr College) and James C. Wright (Bryn Mawr College) Presents the results of excavations in the Nemea Valley, Tsoungiza. Excavations on a hill dominating the Nemea Valley, Tsoungiza, have uncovered the remains of a Late Helladic settlement that stood at its southern end. This volume presents the results of these investigations with an unprecedented study of a small settlement’s economy and society in the Mycenaean period. Through an interdisciplinary study, the authors demonstrate how agricultural production, craft activities, and ceremonial practices integrated the inhabitants of Tsoungiza into a regional exchange system within the Bronze Age world.

INHABITING THE PROMISED LAND
Exploring the Complex Relationship between Archaeology and Ancient Israel as Depicted in the Bible By Margreet L. Steiner Elucidates the lives and beliefs of peoples that inhabited the land in which the Bible was written. This book describes the often-complicated relationship between archaeology and the Bible. It is not a book on ‘biblical archaeology’, and archaeology is not used to illustrate the biblical stories, nor to prove that the Bible is right. Instead, it focuses on the information that archaeology can provide of the lives and beliefs of the ancient peoples that inhabited the land in which the Bible was written, and on how this information relates to the biblical stories.

Examines twelve non-royal tombs found relatively intact, from the plains of Saqqara to the sacred hills of Thebes, that managed to escape ancient looters. A Monument for the Reawakening of Osiris By Dr. Marco Zecchi (University of Bologna) Examines a striking naos dedicated by King Amasis. This book explores the naos AM 107 of the Museum of Antiquities of Leiden, built by King Amasis in the 6th century BC, a period that saw an intense production of monolithic shrines. Though small, it stands out for its originality: Amasis dedicated the naos to Osiris Hemag, one of the most important and enigmatic Osirian forms of the first millennium BC. This naos is not only a shrine, but also a monument conveying a new definition of Osiris and his rebirth.

WHAT DID THE SARCOPHAGUS OF SYMMACHUS LOOK LIKE? Late Antique Pagan Sarcophagi By Niels Hannestad
Re-examines the chronology of Roman mythological sarchophagi. This book explores the chronology of Roman mythological sarcophagi, which traditionally assumes a peak in production during the reign of Gallienus (AD 259-268), fading away with the reign of Constantine. At that time, it is believed that production of pagan sarcophagi had ceased, to be replaced by Christian sarcophagi. This raises the simple question that forms the basis of this book: how were pagans buried?

Insular and Continental Sacred Objects in Viking Age Contexts in Norway By Egil Mikkelsen Presents a new interpretation of sacred objects found in pagan Viking graves. Until now, insular and continental material found in pagan Viking Age graves in Norway has been interpreted as looted material from churches and monasteries on the British Isles and the Continent. This book looks at the use and functions of these sacred objects in their original Christian contexts. Based on such an analysis the author proposes an alternative interpretation of these objects: they were brought by Christian missionaries from different parts of the British Isles and the Continent to Norway. Mikkelson interprets the sacred objects found in Viking Age pagan graves as objects that originate from the many unsuccessful mission attempts in Norway throughout the Viking Age, which changed function and were integrated in the pagan tradition.

LOOTING OR MISSIONING
The conversion and Christianisation of Norway can thus be seen as a long-lasting process, at least from about 800 to the beginning of the eleventh century. As the written sources on the subject are incomplete, the archaeological evidences are the main source. The main part of the manuscript regards the context of all these sources, studied in each part of Norway separately: Where do we find concentrations of objects that could support the interpretation of these being the result of mission attempts, and where can we combine archaeological and written sources to tentatively create more complete stories related to mission? Magic and Mind in Late Iron Age Scandinavia By Neil Price New edition of a multi-award-winning book on magic in the Viking era. Examines the evidence for Old Norse sorcery, looking at its meaning and function, practice and practitioners, and the complicated constructions of gender and sexual identity with which these were underpinned. We find magic in the Vikings’ bedrooms and on their battlefields, and we meet the sorcerers themselves through their remarkable burials and the tools of their trade. Combining archaeology, history and literary scholarship, this multiaward-winning book shows us the Vikings as we have never seen them before. “As brilliant and original a book on the Vikings as I have ever read. The Excavation of an Early Medieval Royal Site in the Kingdom of Brycheiniog By Alan Lane (Cardiff University) and Mark Redknap (Amgueddfa Cyrmu National Museum Wales) Uses a range of evidence to explore the only known crannog mound in Wales. The crannog on Llangorse Lake near Brecon in mid Wales was discovered in 1867 and first excavated in 1869 by two local antiquaries, Edgar and Henry Dumbleton. In 1988, dendrochronological dates from submerged palisade planks established its construction in the ninth century, and a combined off- and on-shore investigation of the site was started as a joint project between Cardiff University and Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales.

LLANGORSE CRANNOG
Subsequent surveys and excavation (1989-1994, 2004) resulted in the recovery of a remarkable time capsule of life in the late ninth and tenth century, on the only crannog yet identified in Wales. This publication re-examines the early investigations, describes in detail the anatomy of the crannog mound and its construction, and the material culture found. The crannog’s treasures include early medieval secular and religious metalwork, evidence for manufacture, the largest depository of early medieval carpentry in Wales and a remarkable richly embroidered silk and linen textile. The crannog’s place in Welsh history is explored, as well as the significance of the crannog in local traditions after its destruction in 916 by Aethelflaed. The cultural affinities of the crannog and its material culture is assessed, as are their relationship to origin myths for the kingdom, and to probable links with early medieval Ireland. The folk tales associated with the lake are explored in a book that brings together archaeology, history, myths and legends, underwater and terrestrial archaeology. SCOTLAND IN EARLY MEDIEVAL EUROPE
Edited by Alice E. Blackwell (National Museums Scotland) Examines Scotland in the context of Early Medieval Europe. This edited volume explores how Scotland can be compared with, contrasted to, or was connected with other parts of Early Medieval Europe. Far from a ‘dark age’, Early Medieval Scotland (AD 300–900) was a crucible of different languages and cultures, the world of the Picts, Scots, Britons and AngloSaxons. This cross-disciplinary volume includes contributions focusing on archaeology, artefacts, art-history and history, and considers themes that connect Scotland with key processes and phenomena happening elsewhere in Europe.

The Pavements and Royal Tombs: History, Archaeology, Architecture and Conservation By Warwick Rodwell and David S. Neal A holistic study of an outstanding group of mosaic pavements, tombs and shrines. Westminster Abbey contains the only surviving medieval Cosmatesque mosaics outside Italy. They comprise: the ‘Great Pavement’ in the sanctuary; the pavement around the shrine of Edward the Confessor; the saint’s tomb and shrine; Henry III’s tomb; the tomb of a royal child, and some other pieces. Surprisingly, the mosaics have never before received detailed recording and analysis, either individually or as an assemblage.

THE COSMATESQUE MOSAICS OF WESTMINSTER ABBEY
This publication, in two volumes, will present a holistic study of this outstanding group of monuments in their historical architectural and archaeological context. The shrine of St Edward is a remarkable survival, having been dismantled at the Dissolution and re-erected (incorrectly) in 1557 under Queen Mary. Large areas of missing mosaic were replaced with plaster onto which mosaic designs were carefully painted. This 16th-century fictive mosaic is unique in Britain. Conservation of the sanctuary pavement was accompanied by full archaeological recording with every piece of mosaic decoration drawn and coloured by David Neal, phase plans have been prepared, and stone-by-stone examination undertaken, petrologically identifying and recording the locations of all the materials present. It has revealed that both the pavements and tombs include a range of exotic stone types. The Cosmati study has shed fresh light on every aspect of the unique series of monuments in Westminster Abbey; this work will fill a major lacuna in our knowledge of 13th-century English art of the first rank, and will command international interest. MAGIC, METALLURGY AND IMAGINATION IN THREE STUDIES Three Studies Edited by John Carey (University College, Cork)
A study of the status and associations of smiths and metalworking in early Irish literature. A study of the fascinating traditions found in early Irish literature concerning smiths and the fashioning of metal. Dress and Identity in Antiquity Edited by Megan Cifarelli (Manhattanville College) A wide ranging examination of the social roles of dressed bodies in ancient contexts. Following the notion of dress as the “assemblage of modifications of the body and/or supplements to the body,” this volume studies varied materials, including physical markings on the body; durable goods related to dressed bodies in archaeological contexts; and dress as represented in the visual arts and texts, bringing overlapping bodies of evidence into play. It examines materials from a range of geographic and chronological contexts from the prehistoric Caucasus to the Roman world and Late Antique Central Asia.

QUANTIFYING THE DEAD
ARCHAEOLOGICAL METHOD & THEORY
FASHIONED SELVES
Using Bone Counts and Mortality Profiles in Burial Archaeology By Pascal Sellier (Musée de l’Homme, Paris) A handbook on the quantitative aspects of human burials. This is the first comprehensive account on the quantitative aspects of human burials. It is both a handbook for bioarchaeologists dealing with mass graves, burial selection phenomena or fragmented and commingled human remains, and a theoretical statement on the use of mortality profiles and quantitative osteological data in funerary archaeology. For instance, it shows how to calculate probabilities of death and the other parameters of a life table, but also the basic hypotheses involved.

Archaeological Expeditions and Rhodian Antiquities Edited by Stine Schierup Archaeological Expeditions and Rhodian Antiquities. From the earliest documented discoveries to the more systematic work done by British, French, Danish and Italian archaeologists, this book examines the history of the exploration of Rhodes. It covers the sources for these early activities, asks how finds that came to European museums in this period can be re-contextualised, and explores the challenges of continued work on sites first excavated in the early, formative period of archaeological research.

Leading us into the fascinating variations of manorial worlds, this book seeks to open the field to include a broader perspective on estate landscapes. ANIMO DECIPIENDI?
Rethinking fakes and authorship in Classical, Late Antique, & Early Christian Works Edited by Antonio Guzmán and Javier Martínez New approaches to fakes and forgeries in the past. New avenues of investigation open up when forgery is considered a creative act rather than a crime. The contributions in this book all share a willingness to consider new approaches to the subject of ancient fakes, forgeries and questions of authenticity. It is the latest instalment of an ongoing inquiry into how the ancient world appears when viewed through the lens of fakes and forgeries, sincerities and authenticities, genuine signatures and pseudepigrapha.

Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Food, Death, and the Afterlife Edited by Candi K. Cann The first interdisciplinary book to examine the role of food in death, bereavement, and the afterlife. Food has played a major role in funerary and memorial practices since the dawn of the human race. In the ancient Roman world, for example, it was common practice to build channels from the tops of graves into the crypts themselves, and mourners would regularly pour offerings of food and drink into these conduits to nourish the dead while they waited for the afterlife. Funeral cookies wrapped with printed prayers and poems meant to comfort mourners became popular in Victorian England; while in China, Japan, and Korea, it is customary to offer food not only to the bereaved, but to the deceased, with ritual dishes prepared and served to the dead.

DYING TO EAT
This is the first interdisciplinary book to examine the role of food in death, bereavement, and the afterlife. The contributors explore the phenomenon across cultures and religions, investigating topics including tombstone rituals in Buddhism, Catholicism, and Shamanism; the role of death in the Moroccan approach to food; and the role of funeral casseroles and church cookbooks in the Southern United States. This innovative collection not only offers food for thought regarding the theories and methods behind these practices but also provides recipes that allow the reader to connect to the argument through material experience. Illuminating how cooking and corpses both transform and construct social rituals, Dying to Eat serves as a fascinating exploration of the foodways of death and bereavement. HISTORIC TOWN ATLASES SERIES
Edited by Alan Crossley
Traces the origins and growth of Oxford from prehistory to the modern city. The latest volume of the British Historic Towns Atlas covers the internationally-renowned city of Oxford. Famed for its university and its many outstanding historic buildings, the volume presents in mapped form the history of its topographical development. From its prehistoric setting, through its contentious Anglo-Saxon foundation, the medieval establishment of its university, and its sporadic growth after that, the atlas charts how it became a nineteenth-century city dominated by colleges, churches, university buildings, and its associated publishing industry.

BRITISH HISTORIC TOWNS ATLAS VOLUME VII. OXFORD
The atlas is presented as a large-format portfolio containing a series of maps showing the city at key points in its history, many illustrations of its buildings and streets, maps to show its setting, and reproduction early maps of the city. A readable text introduces and explains the maps, giving the reader a thorough grounding in how and why Oxford developed, and an explanation of its changing fortunes. A supplementary chapter brings the situation up to date. Whilst there have been many histories of the university written, the atlas concentrates on the topographic development of Oxford as a settlement, and explains it in mapped form. A comprehensive gazetteer lists every building and street shown on the maps, with a short history and references for further reading. As with the previous volumes in the series, the large-format book is held in an attractive presentation folder, which also contains 16 large fold-out maps, 5 sheets of illustrations, and a comprehensive gazetteer. MEDIEVAL SLAVIC COINAGES IN THE BALKANS By Martin Dimnik and Julijan Dobrinic
Introduces the English-speaking reader to the medieval Slavic coinages of the Balkans. This book does not intend to present an in-depth analysis of any individual coinage or an analysis of specific coin hoards, but to make available a general synthesis of the up-to-date scholarship on medieval coinages of the Balkans. Until now, these coinages have been examined only in specialised articles on the problems of attribution and identification of specific coins, or in lists and catalogues of the coinages struck by specific rulers, states and towns. This is the first attempt at a comprehensive review of coinages issued by all the Slavic political authorities of the medieval Balkans.

Fully revised and expanded edition of a classic reference work. The standard reference work for Roman Imperial coinage of Hadrian now occupies a fully revised and greatly expanded standalone volume to cover the last epoch of what many consider the apogee of Roman coinage – begun with Nero’s reform of AD 64 when great effort was taken over their iconographic designs. It is also a long overdue attempt to reconcile our increased 21st century understanding of this otherwise lightly-documented reign of one of the key figures in Roman history. WORLD HISTORY
FROM GOLDEN ROCK TO HISTORIC GEM
A Historical Archaeological Analysis of the Maritime Cultural Landscape of St. Eustatius, Dutch Caribbean By Ruud Stelten Detailed analysis of the maritime cultural landscape of St. Eustatius over the past four centuries. St. Eustatius was one of the busiest ports in the eighteenth-century Atlantic World and played an important role in the American War of Independence. Relics of its turbulent past are found all over the island and in its waters. Through archaeological and documentary research, this book provides a detailed analysis of St. Eustatius over the past four centuries, bridging the gap between marine and terrestrial worlds, and demonstrating that land and sea must be studied in relation to each other. The Impact of Industrialisation on London Health By Gaynor Western and Jelena Bekvalac (Museum of London) Research on 2,000 skeletons reveals the impact of the Industrial Revolution on human health. Industrialisation is a complex issue in terms of the hazards and benefits it has brought to human beings in our endeavours to improve our lives. The archive of human skeletal remains at the Museum of London provides a large bank of evidence, explored here along with other skeletal collections from around England, to investigate how far some diseases go back in time and what we can tell about the influence of living environments past and present on human health.

COPERNICUS BANNED
The Entangled Matter of the anti-Copernican Decree of 1616 Edited by Natacha Fabbri (Stanford University) and Federica Favino Aims to bring the anti-Copernican degree of 1616 into the foreground. Nine essays examine the causes, the figures involved, and the consequences of the anti-Copernican decree of 1616. Together, they shed light on various philosophical, theological, political and cultural aspects of the discussions that arose around the ‘temerity’ of Copernicanism and that eventually led to its prohibition by the Church. The chapters form a mosaic whose pieces not only contribute to the picture outlined by other studies, but which also give new meaning to the whole scenario.

More than 5,000 inhabitants were displaced and 348 properties were torn down so that the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) could excavate the ancient Agora. Using materials from the ASCSA Archives and photographs from the 1930s, this volume details the history of the negotiations, the expropriations, and the Vrysaki neighbourhood itself.

Individual, Community and History in Miquel Barceló’s Works By Irene Biolchini (University of Malta) Situates Miquel Barceló within contemporary critical debate. In past years, Miquel Barceló has been depicted in various and yet contrasting ways: the new Picasso, the rebel, the genius, the joker. This book’s primary goal is to situate the artist within contemporary critical debate, discussing his production during the Postmodern Era and analysing his affinity with Hypermodernity. Through the comparison of Barceló’s writings, declarations, and works, the study examines the artist’s autofiction, creating a connection between his hyperindividualism and the oceanic feeling.

The Forgotten Impressionist Mary Rogers Williams, 1857−1907 By Eve M. Kahn Reveals the life and work of understudied artist Mary Rogers Williams. Revolutionary artist Mary Rogers Williams (1857−1907), from Hartford, Connecticut, biked and hiked from the Arctic Circle to Naples, exhibited globally, trained at the Art Students League, chafed against art world rules that favoured men, and taught at Smith College for nearly two decades, but sadly ended up almost totally obscure. FUTURISM: ANTICIPATING POSTMODERNISM A Sociological Essay on Avant-Garde Art and Society By Ilaria Riccioni (Free University of Bolzano)
What can we still learn from the radical claims of avant-garde art? The first Manifesto of Futurism was published in Le Figaro on February 20th, 1909. It was to become the first avant-garde movement in art – it aimed to change the function of art within society, foster Italian culture beyond its provincial domains, and last but not least, to extend language as free expression of a new and forthcoming society of technology. What can we still learn from the radical claims of avant-garde art?

HITCHCOCK AND THE CENSORS By John Billheimer
An exploration of Alfred Hitchcock’s relationship with film censors. Throughout his career, Alfred Hitchcock had to deal with a wide variety of censors attuned to the slightest suggestion of sexual innuendo, undue violence, toilet humor, religious disrespect, and all forms of indecency, real or imagined. This book traces the forces that led to the Production Code and describes Hitchcock’s interactions with code officials on a film-by-film basis as he fought to protect his creations, bargaining with code reviewers and sidestepping censorship to produce a lifetime of memorable films. By examining Hitchcock’s priorities in dealing with the censors, this work highlights the director’s theories of suspense as well as his magician-like touch when negotiating with code officials.

HARBINGERS OF TWENTIETH-CENTURY NEO-CLASSICISM By Finn Egeland Hansen
Proposes a new theory about the neo-classical style in music. Finn Egeland Hansen uses three composers – the French Camille SaintSaëns and Charles Gounod, and the Danish Niels W. Gade – to discuss his thesis that the classical-romantic main current in classical music represents two sub-currents: one focusing on the romantic aspects, the other on the classical. He demonstrates how in different aspects they were harbingers of the neo-classical style – a style usually exemplified through later composers.

Edited by Maria Fabricius Hansen, Rosanna Tindbæk and Gundhild Ravn Borggreen Explores the image as an ontological paradox throughout history. The image is an ontological paradox; it is made of dead matter, yet appears to be alive. This book addresses the perpetual relevance of images’ enigmatic life-likeness by asking the question: what qualifies animation? Covering a wide range of image practices, from early Palaeolithic stone engravings to baroque painting, and from modern fashion to early cinema, the chapters demonstrate that the ontological paradox of the image is not limited to a specific historical period or type of image.

Decolonizing Biblical and Graeco-Roman Antiquities Edited by Jonathan Cahana and Karmen MacKendrick Attempts to decolonise our understanding of antiquity. This volume’s goal is to decolonise our understanding of antiquity. Rather than seeing antiquity as a direct and linear predecessor to modernity, or as entirely unrelated, it allows a more nuanced exploration of antiquity and modernity together. History has repeatedly demonstrated that colonialism has never contributed to mutual understanding and constructive exchange of ideas, and this book proposes that it is in this light that we should study our ancestors – and our contemporaries.

UNFRAMING AESTHETICS
By Pietro Conte (Ca’ Foscari University) Introduces the concept of “un-framing” of images. The world of the image has traditionally been considered as separate from the real world. This separation has been ensured by framing devices, whether the pedestal of a statue, the frame of a painting, or the cinema screen. However, developments in image-making techniques have resulted in the production of hyper-realistic, immersive, and interactive virtual environments that blur the threshold between image and reality. This book introduces the concept of “un-framing” to understand this radically new iconoscape.

AESTHETICS OF VALUES
Edited by Claudio Rozzoni (University of Lisbon) and Nélio Conceição Within a landscape in which studies on the notion of the image proliferate through multiple disciplinary fields, this book proposes a path dedicated to the analysis of the status of the image, taking its relationship with the notion of value as a starting point. THE COMMON GOOD
N.F.S. Grundtvig as Politician and Contemporary Historian Edited by Edward Broadbridge Highlights the lesser-known roles of N.F.S. Grundtvig as politician and historian. N.F.S. Grundtvig is best known globally as the founding father of the ‘People’s High School’, with his emphasis on lifelong learning and the living word in interactive conversation. In Denmark his next greatest achievement is his hymn-writing and song-writing. Few think of Grundtvig as a politician or historian, but his historical interests were the driving-force in his entry into public politics, and the texts in this volume demonstrate that.

Writings on War and International Affairs By David Hume and Edited by Spartaco Pupo (University of Calabria) Seeks to rediscover David Hume as a political figure. David Hume has, until now, not been adequately considered as a statesman, despite his participation in public affairs and politics. To fill this historiographic gap, this book collects for the first time the five writings, long unpublished, concerning Hume’s military, diplomatic and political experience. It is conceived in the awareness that for the purposes of an organic and objective reconstruction of Hume’s political thought, his involvement in the practice of policy is as important as his theory.

The Nous in Dostoevsky’s Ridiculous Man By Mary Naumenko Uses Dostoevsky’s The Dream of a Ridiculous Man to illuminate an oft-used term in Orthodox Christian theology and anthropology: the ‘Nous’. In this eye-opening literary study, the title character and his spiritual metamorphosis are examined in depth in light of the ancient concept of Nous as it developed from the Greek philosophers to the Christian fathers. By comparing the “Ridiculous Man” to similar characters in Dostoevsky’s corpus, the author shows how an Orthodox Christian understanding of the Nous underpins Dostoevsky’s own anthropology and how his literary works in turn guide the reader toward a truer vision of humanity.

WILLIS DUKE WEATHERFORD
Race, Religion, and Reform in the American South By Andrew McNeill Canady A comprehensive biography of Andrew McNeill Canady, influential educator. Willis Duke Weatherford (1875-1970) defied convention as one of the first prominent white southern liberals to dedicate his life to reforming the South’s social system. At times, his own beliefs prevented him from advocating for absolute racial equality, and so historians debate Weatherford’s legacy: aas he a forward-thinking supporter of human rights or merely a moderate paternalist? In this comprehensive biography, Andrew McNeill Canady offers a reassessment of the influential educator’s life and work. NEW DIRECTIONS IN SOUTHERN HISTORY

Investigates the volunteering phenomenon through sociological criteria of ‘risk’ and ‘border’. This book aims to investigate the phenomenon of volunteering as a workfare event, as a synchronous rewriting of territorial policy and advocacy, according to the principles of risk and border. The two terms, as a solid sociological category, shed light on the material and semantic shift of European welfare. The assumption of this survey is that the field of volunteering is the result of distinctive and discriminatory practices and forces produced by the individuals who participate in it as volunteers. It relates the two types of risks to the political process of the welfare state, which encompass public opinion formation, party competition, and public policy-making.

What Intentional Communities Can Teach Us about Democracy, Simplicity, and Nonviolence By A. Whitney Sanford Demonstrates how individual citizens can make a difference by living mindfully. In light of concerns about food and human health, fraying social ties, economic uncertainty, and rampant consumerism, some people are foregoing a hurried, distracted existence and embracing a mindful way of living. Over the course of four years, A. Whitney Sanford visited ecovillages, cohousing communities, and Catholic worker houses and farms where individuals are striving to “be the change they wish to see in the world.” In this book, she reveals the solutions that these communities have devised for sustainable living. She examines their methods of reviving and adapting traditional agrarian skills, testing alternate building materials for their homes, and developing local governments that balance group needs and individual autonomy.
