STANDING TALL The Goh Chok Tong Years Volume 2 by Shing Huei Peh (The Nutgraf, Singapore) Some did not expect him to last long as Prime Minister. Few predicted he would succeed in the footsteps of Lee Kuan Yew. When Goh Chok Tong took over as the second Prime Minister of Singapore in 1990, many — from within and without the country — wondered aloud if the young country would survive Lee Kuan Yew. But Goh would confound the naysayers, leading Singapore for 14 years through recessions, terrorist attacks, electoral setbacks and even a mysterious virus. Standing Tall captures the transformation of a political leader, evolving from a Prime Minister with a touch of naivety to a hard-nosed strategist. He would introduce some of the country’s most controversial policies, including the foreign talent scheme and formula for ministerial salaries, while advancing a kinder and gentler Singapore with the likes of MediFund and Edusave. A CABINET OF CURIOSITIES The Myth, Magic and Measure of Meteorites

LIGHT POWER: HALF A CENTURY OF SOLAR ELECTRICITY RESEARCH

by Martin Beech (University of Regina, Canada)

Volume 2: 20th Century Photovoltaic Systems

Hurtling through the atmosphere, in a blaze of light and reverberating percussions, the arrival of a meteorite on Earth is a magical, rare, and precious sight. These characteristics have accordingly ensured a long, yet often controversial history. For all this, meteorites are cosmic messengers. They tell us about the entire history of the solar system, their story carrying us from the very earliest moments, when solid material first began to form in the solar nebula. Indeed, meteorites played a key role in the origins of Earth’s oceans and the genesis of life. Meteorites additionally tell us about the origin and evolution of the asteroids, and they tell us about impacts upon the Moon as well as the volcanic history of planet Mars. Much is known about the structure and chemistry of meteorites, but for all this, they still harbor many scientific mysteries that have yet to be resolved.

BOOKS

edited by David Faiman (Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel) This is the second volume of a 3-volume history of solar power generating systems covering the approximately 50 years of research and development surrounding the energy crisis of 1973. Volume 1 covered solar-thermal systems. The present volume covers photovoltaic systems in the 20th century. Volume 3 will cover photovoltaic developments from the start of the 21st century. The history is based upon keynote lectures given by international specialists at the Sede Boqer Symposia on Solar Electric Power Production, a series that commenced in 1986. The lectures document many technical details that have become hard to find, including some pertaining to technologies that were successfully demonstrated but subsequently discontinued owing to their not having been deemed to be cost-effective at the time. However, in the event that different economic considerations may ensue, these volumes can provide a valuable starting point, including references, for the re-investigation of some of those once abandoned ideas.

THE INVISIBLE UNIVERSE

CONDENSED MATTER PHYSICS

Dark Matter, Dark Energy, and the Origin and End of the Universe by Antonino Del Popolo (Università degli Studi di Catania, Italy)

Series on the Foundations of Natural Science and Technology

HEAVILY DOPED LOW DIMENSIONAL MATERIALS

This book describes some of the frontier problems of cosmology: our almost total ignorance of what the Universe is made up of, the mystery of its origin and its end. The book starts with a description of the historical events that led to the construction of the Big Bang model together with the stages that transformed the Universe from a very hot place to a very cold one, full with the structures that we observe today. These structures (stars, galaxies, etc.) constitute only 5% of the contents of the Universe. Concerning the remaining 95%, dubbed dark matter and dark energy, we know very little, and we have only indirect evidence of their existence. The text describes the story and the protagonists who showed the need for the existence of this “missing matter”, the observations, and puzzles they had to solve to understand that dark matter was not ordinary matter. The book describes the hunt for dark matter, carried out with instruments operating in space, on the Earth’s surface, and in laboratories built in the bowels of the Earth. It also describes dark energy, which manifests itself in the accelerated expansion of the Universe, and appeared only a few billions of years ago. The book discusses why dark energy must exist and what its existence implies, especially for the future and the end of our Universe.

LOW-ENERGY EXCITATIONS IN DISORDERED SOLIDS A Story of the ‘Universal’ Phenomena of Structural Tunneling by Richard B Stephens (University of Pennsylvania, USA) & Xiao Liu (US Naval Research Laboratory, USA)

BOOKS

This book provides a unified, comprehensive description of tunneling systems in disordered solids suitable for graduate students/researchers wishing an introduction to the field. Its focus is on the tunneling systems intrinsic to glassy solids. It describes the experimental observations of ‘glassy’ properties, develops the basic empirical tunneling model, and discusses the dynamics changes on cooling to temperatures where direct excitation interactions become important and on heating to where tunneling gives way to thermal activation. Finally, it discusses how theories of glass formation can help us understand the ubiquity of these excitations.

CHASING THE GHOST

The Scientific Perspective

Nobelist Fred Reines and the Neutrino

by Louis Marchildon (Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Canada)

BOOKS

by Leonard A Cole (Rutgers University, USA) A mixture of memoir and biography, Chasing the Ghost: Fred Reines and the Neutrino tells a deeply human story that appeals both to scientists and non-scientists. Although the book relates to the important discovery of neutrinos, it is more intimately about Fred Reines than the technical details of neutrino physics. Narrated in a fashion to interest and excite the reader, the science presented here is accessible to a broad audience. Coursing through Reines’ life, his various challenges and encounters, the book reveals constants of his persona. Reines displayed a sustained consistency as a respected leader, admired by students and colleagues as a fount of big ideas and ambition. A continuing source of inspiration and motivation to others, his most basic consistency was his passion for science.

Science has its roots in human curiosity. It is the process of exploration and research that has led to a better understanding of our surroundings: Copernicus set the Earth in its right place in our models of the Universe, Charles Darwin elucidated the mechanism of the evolution of living species, and Albert Einstein brought out the intimate connection between energy, space, and time. This book provides a reliable guide to acquaint oneself with the scientific process. It explains in easy terms how scientific investigation has historically developed to reach our present understanding of the world around us. TWO-PHASE EMISSION DETECTORS

THE VORTEX ATOM A New Paradigm by Barry R Clarke (Brunel University, UK)

by Alexander I Bolozdynya (Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics, Russia & National Research Nuclear University, Russia), Dmitry Yu Akimov (National Research Nuclear University, Russia), Alexey F Buzulutskov (Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics, Russia & Novosibirsk State University, Russia) & Vitaly Chepel (University of Coimbra, Portugal)

With clear illustrations throughout and without recourse to quantum mechanics, the reader is invited to revisit unsolved problems lying at the foundations of theoretical physics. Maxwell and his contemporaries abandoned their search for a geometrical representation of the electric and magnetic fields. The wave-particle dilemma and BoseEinstein statistical counting have resulted in unsatisfactory non-realistic interpretations. Furthermore, a simple structure of the hydrogen atom that includes hyperfine levels is still wanting.

This monograph, devoted exclusively to two-phase emission detectors, considers the technology’s basic features while taking into account new developments introduced into experimental practice in the last ten years since the publication of its predecessor, Emission Detectors (Bolozdynya, 2010).

Working with the latest experimental data in photonics a proposed solution to the wave-particle dilemma is suggested based on an array of circular-polarized rays. The Bose – Einstein counting procedure is recast in terms of distinguishable elements. Finally, a vortex model of a ‘particle’ is developed based on a trapped photon. This consists of a single ray revolving around a toroidal surface, and allows a geometrical definition of mass, electric potential, and magnetic momentum. With the adjustment of two parameters, values to 4 dp for the hyperfine frequencies (MHz) of hydrogen can be obtained for which a computer program is available.

Readership: Researchers and practitioners in the fields of particle physics, cosmology, astronomy and astrophysics; advanced undergraduate and graduate students.

Contents: Introduction; The Helical Space Dislocation (HSD); A Transversely Iterated Single Photon; A Longitudinally Iterated Single Photon; The Helical Array Dislocation (HAD); The Unloaded OAM Mass Ring; The Loaded OAM Mass Ring; Hydrogen Atom Fine Structure; Hydrogen Atom Hyperfine Structure; A Workable Computer Program for Computing Hyperfine Frequencies.

STATISTICAL PHYSICS, COMPLEXITY AND NONLINEAR DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS

GEOMETRY AND TOPOLOGY MANIFOLDS AND LOCAL STRUCTURES A General Theory by Marco Grandis (Università di Genova, Italy) Local structures, like differentiable manifolds, fibre bundles, vector bundles and foliations, can be obtained by gluing together a family of suitable ‘elementary spaces’, by means of partial homeomorphisms that fix the gluing conditions and form a sort of ‘intrinsic atlas’, instead of the more usual system of charts living in an external framework.

APPLICATIONS OF FIELD THEORY METHODS IN STATISTICAL PHYSICS OF NONEQUILIBRIUM SYSTEMS

An ‘intrinsic manifold’ is defined here as such an atlas, in a suitable category of elementary spaces: open euclidean spaces, or trivial bundles, or trivial vector bundles, and so on. This uniform approach allows us to move from one basis to another: for instance, the elementary tangent bundle of an open Euclidean space is automatically extended to the tangent bundle of any differentiable manifold. The same holds for tensor calculus.

BOOKS

by Bohdan Lev & Anatoly Zagorodny (National Academy of Science of Ukraine)

This book formulates a unified approach to the description of many-particle systems combining the methods of statistical physics and quantum field theory. The benefits of such an approach are in the description of phase transitions during the formation of new spatially inhomogeneous phases, as well in describing quasi-equilibrium systems with spatially inhomogeneous particle distributions and metastable states.

Technically, the goal of this book is to treat these structures as ‘symmetric enriched categories’ over a suitable basis, generally an ordered category of partial mappings.

For the last few decades researchers from different fields gather their findings and knowledge trying to give a shape to the new science of complex systems. To address this problem, new tools and methods have to be established. A new, or more precisely an alternative, framework for the characterization of complex system was proposed. In this book we will introduce the applicability of applicability of simplicial complexes in the science of complex systems. After introducing the main definitions and properties of simplicial complexes necessary for representation and analysis of complex systems, we will illustrate the usefulness and versatility of tools and concepts related to the simplicial complexes.

STOCHASTIC INTEREST RATE MODELING WITH FIXED INCOME DERIVATIVE PRICING (3rd Edition)

This monograph is the first in which the theory of groupoids and algebroids is applied to the study of the properties of uniformity and homogeneity of continuous media. It is a further step in the application of differential geometry to the mechanics of continua, initiated years ago with the introduction of the theory of G-structures, in which the group G denotes the group of material symmetries, to study smoothly uniform materials.

BOOKS

by Nicolas Privault (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore)

This book introduces the mathematics of stochastic interest rate modeling and the pricing of related derivatives, based on a stepby-step presentation of concepts with a focus on explicit calculations. The types of interest rates considered range from short rates to forward rates such as LIBOR and swap rates, which are presented in the HJM and BGM frameworks. The pricing and hedging of interest rate and fixed income derivatives such as bond options, caps, and swaptions, are treated using forward measure techniques. An introduction to default bond pricing and an outlook on model calibration are also included as additional topics.

The new approach presented in this book goes much further by being much more general. It is not a generalization per se, but rather a natural way of considering the algebraic-geometric structure induced by the so-called material isomorphisms. This approach has allowed us to encompass non-uniform material and discover new properties of uniformity and homogeneity that certain material bodies can possess, thus opening a new area in the discipline.

This third edition represents a significant update on the second edition published by World Scientific in 2012. Most chapters have been reorganized and largely rewritten with additional details and supplementary solved exercises. New graphs and simulations based on market data have been included, together with the corresponding R codes.

Textbook A MATHEMATICAL JOURNEY THROUGH DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS OF PHYSICS

QUANTIZED NUMBER THEORY, FRACTAL STRINGS AND THE RIEMANN HYPOTHESIS

by Max Lein (Tohoku University, Japan)

From Spectral Operators to Phase Transitions and Universality

The book alternates between mathematicsand physics-centric chapters, and includes plenty of concrete examples from physics throughout as well as 76 exercises with solutions. It exploits that readers from either end are familiar with some of the material already. The mathematics-centric chapters provide the necessary background to make physical concepts mathematically precise and establish basic facts. And each physics-centric chapter introduces physical theories in a way that is more friendly to mathematicians. As the book progresses, advanced material is sprinkled for further detailed exploration. This is to keep it interesting for the readers and to showcase non-trivial examples where mathematics and physics augment one another.

INNOVATIVE TEACHING Best Practices from Business and Beyond for Mathematics Teachers

edited by Martina Bečvářová (Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic)

by Denise H Sutton & Alfred S Posamentier (City University of New York, USA)

World War I heavily affected academic life. In European countries, many talented researchers and students were killed in action and scientific activities were halted to resume only in the postwar years. However, this inhibition turned out to be a catalyst for the birth of a new generation of mathematicians, for the emergence of new ideas and theories and for the surprising creation of new and outstanding scientific schools. The Development of Mathematics Between the World Wars traces the transformation of scientific life within mathematical communities during the interwar period in Central and Eastern Europe, specifically in Germany, Russia, Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia.

This book provides educators with new and exciting ways to introduce material and methods to motivate and engage students by showing how some of the techniques commonly used in the business world — and beyond — are applicable to the world of education. It also offers educators practical advice with regard to the changing culture of education, keeping up with technology, navigating politics at work, interacting with colleagues, developing leadership skills, group behavior, and gender differences. This book demonstrates how the classroom environment is similar to the marketplace. Educators, like businesses. With the introduction of the Internet and the wide use of social media, promoters understand that they must not only engage their audience, but also incorporate audience feedback into the promotional work and product or service they offer. It also shows educators how to take the best practices from business — and beyond — and recombine these resources for appropriate use in the classroom.

High School 1 by Bin Xiong (East China Normal University, China) & Zhigang Feng (Shanghai Senior High School, China)

In this book, trigonomStudy Guide etry is presented mainly through the solution of specific problems. The problems are meant to help the reader consolidate their knowledge of the subject. In addition, they serve to motivate and provide context for the concepts, definitions, and results as they are presented. In this way, it enables a more active mastery of the subject, directly linking the results of the theory with their applications. Some historical notes are also embedded in selected chapters.

The series is in line with the mathematics cognition and intellectual development level of the students in the corresponding grade. The volume lines up the topics in each chapter and introduces a variety of concepts and methods to provide with the knowledge, then gradually transitions to the competition level. CHEMISTRY IN THE CRYOSPHERE Snow and Ice Chemical Processes in the Context of Climate Change (In 2 Volumes)

by Dinesh Kumar Srivastava & V S Ramamurthy (National Institute of Advanced Studies, India) The signs of global warming can be seen everywhere — hotter summers, frequent heavy rains, prolonged droughts, more severe forest fires, fiercer storms (including snow storms) and cyclones, as well as melting polar ice caps. Our indiscriminate actions are raising the spectre of millions of climate refugees who are victims of battles for water, crops, fish, and so on. It is poignant that the poorer countries, that are the least equipped to face these calamities have contributed the least to global warming, but are the worst hit.

BOOKS

edited by Paul Shepson (Stony Brook University, USA) & Florent Domine (University Laval and CNRS, Canada) This set, comprising 19 chapters, written by world experts on these topics, are thus intended to document the current state of understanding of the structure, physical properties, abundance, and chemical and microbiological processes that occur within/ on ice and snow in all Earth environments in which it exists, and to express needs for improvement of that understanding. This, only comprehensive treatise/collection that covers environmentally relevant chemistry and related physical aspects of snow and ice in the Earth system, and the connections to climate change, will be accessible to those with introductory college-level understanding of chemistry and physics.

Only a concerted effort from the entire world by a rapid transition to renewable, clean and green energy sources, while checking wastage, deforestation and pollution, and a genuine adjustment in lifestyles towards moderation can avert the Earth, the only habitable planet we know, from turning into a hothouse.

SCIENCE, TRUTH, AND MEANING From Wonder to Understanding

Recommended for Bookshops

by Benjamin L J Webb (PairX Bio Company, Singapore)

WHAT IS SCIENCE? A Guide for Those Who Love It, Hate It, or Fear It

Science, Truth, and Meaning presents a scientific and philosophical examination of our place in the world. It also celebrates how diverse, scientific knowledge is interconnected and reducible to common foundations.

by Elof Axel Carlson (Indiana University, USA) What is Science? A Guide for Those Who Love It, Hate It, or Fear It, provides the reader with ways science has been done through discovery, exploration, experimentation and other reason-based approaches. It discusses the basic and applied sciences, the reasons why some people hate science, especially its rejection of the supernatural, and others who fear it for human applications leading to environmental degradation, climate change, nuclear war, and other outcomes of sciences applied to society.

The book focuses on aspects of scientific truth that relate to our understanding of reality, and confronts whether truth is absolute or relative to what we are. Hence, it assesses the meaning of the scientific deductions we have made and how they have profoundly influenced our conception of life and existence.

Why the book is needed: many popular science books have been written, aimed at different levels of subject expertise, and nearly all treat their specific subject in isolation. Few attempt to link different sciences to their common foundations, and those that do are written by physicists. Since human knowledge is derived by, and relates to, the biological organism that human beings are, then such a book written from a biological perspective represents a novel perspective on the integration of science, and addresses new questions. This is such a book.

PULSE WIDTH MODULATION IN POWER ELECTRONICS

BOOKS

by Isaak Mayergoyz & Siddharth Tyagi (University of Maryland, College Park, USA) This book provides a theoretical discussion of pulse width modulation (PWM) in power electronic inverters. Pulse width modulation is widely used for the frequency control of speed of ac motors, the design of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) as well as the integration of renewable energy sources into existing power grid systems. PWM technique is based on approximation of sinusoidal waveforms by sequences (trains) of rectangular pulses whose widths are properly modulated. This width-modulation results in the suppression of low order harmonics at the expense of amplification of high order harmonics which are suppressed by energy-storage elements in load circuits. The discussion covers various PWM techniques with a focus on the optimal time-domain PWM techniques proposed by the authors.

The safe operation of a nuclear power plant depends on the reliability and safety of the reactor plant, which in turn requires careful monitoring of the equipment at the manufacturing and operation stages. This monograph critically examines the fundamental effects of hydrodynamic and vibration load formation on the modern power unit of the VVER-1200 nuclear power plant, which is originally designed in Russia, as well as the causes and main sources of vibration in the main circulation loop and their energy contribution. Practical examples are used to explain how vibration stress can be reduced and the hydrodynamic status of the circuit improved. Current research on the vibroacoustics of some non-Russion nuclear reactors is also included. Featured Contents: Equations of Motion of Dynamic System; Parameters of Basic Dynamic System; Vibration Diagnostic Signs; MCC Vibrations Modeling; MCC Acoustics in Lumped Parameters; Wave Equation; Equations of Fluid & Gas Dynamics; Long Lines as an Analog of the Acoustic Medium; Long Lines with Lumped Complex Resistance; Elastic Dissipative Medium. Attenuation of Acoustic Waves; ASW Globality-Locality; ASW Phenomenology; MCP Vibrations; Experimental Results of VVER-1200 Vibration Acoustics; Mutual Oscillations of Reactor Vessel and Reactor Cavity; and others.

NEURAL NETWORKS / NETWORKING THE SUBCRITICAL BRAIN A Synergy of Segregated Neural Circuits in Memory, Cognition and Sensorimotor Control by Yoram Baram (Technion — Israel Institute of Technology, Israel)

MACHINE LEARNING — A JOURNEY TO DEEP LEARNING

Have over a hundred years of brain research revealed all its secrets? This book is motivated by the realization that the mathematical theory of dynamical systems underlies cortical behavior. This realization is further enhanced by the synergy of seemingly different mathematical notions: global attractors, which define non-invertible neural firing rate dynamics, random graphs, which define connectivity of neural circuit and prime numbers, which define the dimension and category of cortical operation. Quantum computation is shown to ratify the main conclusion of the book: loosely connected small neural circuits facilitate higher information storage and processing capacities than highly connected large circuits.

NMR WITH BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES IN SOLUTION A Collection of Papers by Kurt Wüthrich 1995 – 2020

Simulations of Biomolecular Systems by Benoit Roux (The University of Chicago, USA)

BOOKS

by Kurt Wüthrich (ETH Zürich, Switzerland & The Scripps Research Institute, USA)

This textbook originated from the course “Simulation, Modeling, and Computations in Biophysics” that I have taught at the University of Chicago since 2011. The students typically came from a wide range of backgrounds, including biology, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and mathematics, and the course was intentionally adapted for senior undergraduate students and graduate students. This is not a highly technical book dedicated to specialists. The objective is to provide a broad survey from the physical description of a complex molecular system at the most fundamental level, to the type of phenomenological models commonly used to represent the function of large biological macromolecular machines.

The book provides insights into the research of the Kurt Wüthrich laboratories from 1996 – 2020. During this time period, the technique of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in solution went through several breakthroughs, while maturing into a standard method of structural biology. With the introduction of TROSY (transverse relaxation-optimized spectroscopy), the range of accessible molecular sizes was extended about thirty-fold, and efficient protein structure determination resulted from the demands of the structural genomics initiative. Applications in fundamental biology and biomedicine include studies of prion proteins and prion diseases (TSEs), the SARS-Corona virus proteome, transmembrane signalling by G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), and signal transfer by pheromones.

The key conceptual elements serving as building blocks in the formulation of different levels of approximations are introduced along the way, aiming to clarify as much as possible how they are interrelated. The only assumption is a basic familiarity with simple mathematics (calculus and integrals, ordinary differential equations, matrix linear algebra, and Fourier-Laplace transforms).

Contents: Background and Introduction; NMR Methods and Software Developments; Protein Folding and Protein Dynamics; Prion Proteins and Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs); Structural Genomics and the SARS Corona Virus (SARS-CoV); G protein-coupled Receptors (GPCRs); Exciting Biology — Collaborations Around the Globe. Readership: Faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students in structural biology, biochemistry, biomedical research and NMR spectroscopy.

Contents: Foreword; Representation of Molecular Systems; Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics; Solvation Free Energy; Implicit Solvent and Continuum models; Binding Equilibrium; Dynamics and Time Correlation Functions; Effective Dynamics of Reduced Models; Diffusion and Time Evolution of Probability Distribution; and others.

BOOKS

by Ronald Sahyouni (University of California, San Diego, USA), Jefferson Chen (University of California, Irvine, USA), Aradhana Verma (University of California, Los Angeles, USA) & Nolan Brown (Univ. of California, Irvine, USA) This book aims to present, educate and inform individuals about Alzheimer’s disease in a comprehensive manner. Its scope ranges from the discovery of the disease, epidemiology and basic biological principles underlying it, to advanced stem cell therapies used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease is a rapidly growing problem seen in every country around the world. This is the first and only comprehensive book to cover Alzheimer’s disease, and includes the most updated literature and scientific progress in the field of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease research.

The case studies from many countries include serial killers with a health background, drugs and medical devices that proved to be dangerous, negligent and poor clinical practices, as well as incompetent and weak management that led to failing hospitals and harm to patients. There are also corruption cases, accidents at work, and cases involving the sexual exploitation of children. Politicians’ early responses to COVID-19 and the subsequent missteps are also scrutinised. Many of the errors and omissions that led to patient harm have been repeated.

Most books on the market that focus on Alzheimer’s disease are targeted at caregivers as practical advice on how to deal with loved ones with the disease. This book instead is a comprehensive and popular science book that can be read by anyone with an interest in learning more about the disease.

This book is not an attack on health services or health professionals. Instead, it is a search for ways of making health delivery safer for patients and staff who deliver care often in challenging circumstances. Its focus is learning rather than blame.

The Academic Foundation Programme Interview by Dalia Abdulhussein, Alice Lee & Mohammad Fallaha (Imperial College London, UK) The authors are three recent graduates from Imperial College London who have all secure their first choice AFP jobs in a highly competitive programme in London. During their time in preparing for the interview process, they found that resources were limited in the information the resources conveyed and guidance was based on information passed down from colleagues. Hence, the aim of this book is to not only explain the application process but also provides prospective applicants with a useful workbook presenting several mock scenarios to work through. The interview forms the biggest proportion of the marks allocated to a candidate application and hence is the key determinant in securing a job.

This book contains 300 multiple choice questions (MCQs), in the format of a single best answer (SBA) from four options, for undergraduate medical students preparing for the Duke Elder prize exam run by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) annually.

Featured Contents: Introduction: What is the AFP?; What Can I Do My AFP In?; Why The AFP?; How Do I Apply for the AFP?; White Space Questions; How Can I Prepare?; The Personal Questions Interview: What is the “Personal Interview”?; What Skills are Desirable?; How Can I Answer Personal Interview Questions?; How Should I Go About Preparing?; Example Questions; The Clinical Interview: The Generic Approach to the Clinical Interview; The A-E Management of an Acutely Unwell Patient; Medical Ethics and Law: Core Components Useful for the Interview; Important Non-Clinical Issues for the Clinical Interview; Common Scenarios and Example Worked Answers; The Academic Interview: The Generic Approach to the Academic Interview; Types of Study Design and the Hierarchy of Evidence; and others.

Microeconometric Studies of Firms’ Imports and Exports spans twentyfour papers with a focus on four topics: applications of advanced microeconometric methods for cross-section and panel data of internationally active firms; cross-country studies using comparable data for firms; studies of exports by business services firms; and new evidence on German firms’ trade in goods from transaction data. Applications focus on Germany, the third-largest exporter and importer of goods in the world. Featured Contents: Applications of Advanced Econometric Methods — Introduction: A Note on the Firm-Size — Export Relationship (Joachim Wagner); Cross-Country Studies in Firms’ International Trade — Introduction: Understanding Cross-Country Differences in Exporter Premia: Comparable Evidence for 14 Countries (International Study Group on Exports and Productivity (ISGEP)); Studies on Exports by Business Services Firms — Introduction: Robust Estimates of Exporter Productivity Premia in German Business Services Enterprises (Alexander Vogel and Joachim Wagner); New Evidence on German Firms’ Trade in Goods from Transaction Data: Germany’s Trade in Goods: A Survey of the Evidence from Transaction Data (Joachim Wagner); and others. Readership: Researchers in international trade and business as well as economists and business economists active in academia. The book can also serve as a supplement for graduate level textbooks on the theory of international trade in PhD-level courses in international economics.

This collection of essays studies the implications of this second wave of globalization for national economic performance. In doing so, it takes a bottomup approach, building up the macroeconomic trajectories from the microeconomic effects of globalization on firms and workers. The collected essays highlight the asymmetry of responses across firms and workers between and within industries as well as territories, thus explaining the forces behind the emergence of ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ from globalization. The collection shows how state-of-the-art models of international economics and economic geography can be brought to life by addressing several topical issues in the public debate, ranging from regional growth and regional decline to international competition and creative destruction, from innovation patterns to cultural diversity and from immigration to offshoring.

A HISTORY OF CHINESE THOUGHTS ON PUBLIC FINANCE (In 2 Volumes)

THE STRATEGIC RELATIONS BETWEEN INDIA, THE UNITED STATES AND JAPAN IN THE INDO-PACIFIC

BOOKS

by Wenxue Sun (Dongbei University, China) & Haipeng Qi (Dongbei University, China)

When Three is Not a Crowd by Rupakjyoti Borah (Sharda University, India)

This book provides a chronological record of the development of Chinese thoughts on public finance over its 4, 000 years of history, ranging from the Xia Dynasty to the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. It addresses the onset and evolution of Chinese thoughts on public finance across the different periods, such as thoughts on public finance during the Xia, Shang and Western Zhou dynasties, and thoughts from the early feudalistic period; offers an account about the thriving and declining of China’s ancient thoughts on public finance; and deals with the emergence of capitalistic theories from the late Qing Dynasty to the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

This book analyses the growing relationships among India, the United States and Japan in the Indo-Pacific region, which can broadly be defined as the space encompassing both the Indian and the Pacific Oceans, though different nations have their competing visions of its extent. While on the one hand we have an ascendant China in all respects, at the same time, the US has continued interests in maintaining its leadership role in the region and beyond. Washington appears to employ a hub-and-spoke model where its most important ally in the region, Japan, fits in perfectly as a point from which to connect to the rest of the region. However, the critical role will be that of India, which is not an American ally but is key to many American plans in the region. Will India cooperate?

Featured Contents: The Emergence and Evolvement of Thoughts on Public Finance in Ancient China; Thoughts on Public Finance during the Xia, Shang and Western Zhou Dynasties; Thoughts on Public Finance during the Spring and Autumn, the Warring States Periods; Thoughts on Public Finance during the Qin and the Han Dynasties; Thoughts on Public Finance during the Three Kingdoms Period, the Jin Dynasties, and the Southern and Northern Dynasties; Thoughts on Public Finance during the Sui and the Tang Dynasties; The Prosperity and Decline of Ancient Chinese Thoughts on Public Finance; Thoughts on Public Finance of the Song Dynasties; Thoughts on Public Finance of the Liao, Jin and Yuan Dynasties; and others.

By examining the rapidly-evolving relations among the three countries, this book explores India’s position in this region. Crucially, this book will analyse how the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic will upset power relations in the region. Contents: Foreword (James Mayall); Japan – India Relations in the Post-Cold War Era; Factors Bringing India and Japan Closer; Where do the US and India Figure in Each Other’s Foreign Policies?; The Personal Touch in the Growth of India – US – Japan Relations; External Factors: China and ASEAN; What Lies Ahead for India – US – Japan Ties?; The Flux in the Indo-Pacific.

DECODING CHINA’S EXPORT MIRACLE

SINGAPORE COLLECTION

A Global Value Chain Analysis

STANDING TALL

BOOKS

by Yuqing Xing (National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, Japan)

The Goh Chok Tong Years Volume 2 by Shing Huei Peh (The Nutgraf, Singapore)

This book adopts the g l o b a l va l u e c h a i n (GVC) approach to analyze the Chinese export miracle over the last four decades. It focuses on the tasks rather than the gross export value and emphasizes the organizations of modern trade rather than the national comparative advantage. The GVC approach systematically explains how, in less than four decades China has evolved from a closed economy to the world’s No. 1 exporting nation; why China, a developing country, has exported more hightechnology products than labor-intensive products to the US; and why almost half of the US trade deficit has originated from China.

The unchartered post-Cold War world which Goh stepped into posed challenges to the new leader, yet he not only cemented but also expanded Singapore’s global space and stature. Along the way, he overcame hurdles from Bill Clinton’s administration, exchanged quips with Nelson Mandela, and even saved Li Peng from a possibly severe heart attack. This sequel is written by author and journalist Peh Shing Huei, who also penned Tall Order: The Goh Chok Tong Story, Volume 1. Through interviews and access to People’s Action Party documents and Goh’s notes, this authorised biography uncovers rare insights into Singapore politics. Standing Tall tells the untold story of the Goh Chok Tong years, as he continues with Singapore’s transformation into a global city.
