MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS

ASPECTS OF HARMONIC ANALYSIS ON LOCALLY COMPACT ABELIAN GROUPS

The Fourier transform is a “tool” used in engineering and computer vision to model periodic phenomena. Starting with the basics of measure theory and integration, this book delves into the harmonic analysis of locally compact abelian groups. It provides an in-depth tour of the beautiful theory of the Fourier transform based on the results of Gelfand, Pontrjagin, and Andre Weil in a manner accessible to an undergraduate student who has taken linear algebra and introductory real analysis.

TOPICS IN MODEL THEORY

This book has two chapters. The first is a modern or contemporary account of stability theory. A focus is on the local (formula-byformula) theory, treated a little differently from in the author’s book Geometric Stability Theory. There is also a survey of general and geometric stability theory, as well as applications to combinatorics (stable regularity lemma) using pseudofinite methods.

AND RELATED TOPICS

THE NUMERICAL JORDAN FORM

by Petko Petkov (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgaria)

The Numerical Jordan Form is the first book dedicated to exploring the algorithmic and computational methods for determining the Jordan form of a matrix, as well as addressing the numerical difficulties in finding it. Unlike the “pure” Jordan form, the numerical Jordan form preserves its structure under small perturbations of the matrix elements so that its determination presents a well-posed computational problem. If this structure is well conditioned, it can be determined reliably in the presence of uncertainties and rounding errors.

Contents: Preface; List of Algorithms; Notation; Numerical Matrix Computations; The Eigenvalue Problem; The Eigenvalue Sensitivity Problem; Numerical Solution of the Eigenvalue Problem; Geometry of Jordan Forms; Reduction into Jordan – Schur Form; Reduction into Weyr and Jordan Form; Case Study 1. Eigenvalue Sensitivity Analysis; Case Study 2. Computing the Matrix Exponential; Appendix: Review of Linear Algebra and Matrix Analysis; Bibliography; Index.

Readership: Practitioners and researchers, scientists, graduate and advanced undergraduate students.

MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS

ELEMENTARY MECHANICS

(In 2 Volumes) by John G Papastavridis (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA)

This is a comprehensive and state-of-theart compendium of classical or Newtonian (non relativistic and non quantum) mechanics from an advanced and unified viewpoint, namely, from the continuum, or field, form of the fundamental principles of linear and angular momentum of Euler, Cauchy, Hamel et al. The title adjective “elementary” simply means no Lagrangean and no Hamiltonian theories and methods. Yet, in spite of its high level, this extensive work of more than 1450 dense pages of text, and more than 350 pages of galleries is eminently readable and inclusive. The overall style is informal, all ahistorical and intuition-deadening jargon and formalisms (“epsilonics”) have been intentionally avoided.

Featured Contents: Volume 1: I: A Brief History of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics: Classical Antiquity: Greek (Hellenic + Hellenistic) Science; II: Mathematical Background (Vectors, Tensors, Matrices): Vectors: Geometrical Aspects, and their Applications to Statics; Volume 2: III: General Mechanics, Mechanics of Particles & Systems: Introduction to the Geometrical and Physical Foundations of Mechanics; IV: Rigid Bodies: Rigid Body Kinematics: Geometry of Rotational Motion; i.e. Finite Rotation; V: Elements of Continuum Mechanics: Geometry of Deformation, Strain; and others.

Most literature in this subject was developed in the 1950s, and focussed on the theory of systems of continuous and discrete-time deterministic; however, continuous-time and its approximation schemes of stochastic differential equations faced the problems outlined above and made slow progress in developing problems as a result. This monograph addresses these problems by presenting an account of stochastic versus deterministic issues in discrete state dynamic systems in a systematic and unified way.

NOTES ON THERMODYNAMICS

Hot Oolong Cools

Rather than merely hurrying through the principles and then dealing with applications, the book presents the scientific method by discussing the science of thermodynamics starting from empirical observations that are relatable to students. For example, the book uses everyday experiences, such as a cup of hot tea cooling spontaneously, to arrive at the Second Law and Entropy through the idea of the heat engine. All the fundamentals are covered and illustrated with examples that resonate with the broad concerns and interests of students who take STEM classes today. The book examines the thermodynamics of hydrogen and gasoline engines, fuel cells versus the explosive combustion of hydrogen, how efficiently organisms and Spiderman utilize energy, the fizzing of a can of soda and decompression sickness, and how atmospheric carbon dioxide affects ocean pH and, worryingly, dissolves the calcium carbonate shells of marine animals, and also, what might happen if you inadvertently fall into a salt lake.

Contents: Some Background; Zeroth and First Laws; Applications of the First Law; Heat Engines and the Carnot Cycle; The Second Law; Absolute Zero; Fundamental Equations; Phase Equilibrium; Simple Models; The van der Waals Fluid; Applications of Phase Equilibrium; Chemical Equilibrium; Harnessing Chemical Energy.

LOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

(In 2 volumes) by Peter A Fejer & Dan A Simovici (University of Massachusetts Boston, USA)

Logic is a foundational mathematical discipline for Computer Science. This unique compendium provides the main ideas and techniques originating from logic. It is divided into two volumes — propositional logic and predicate logic. The volume presents some of the most important concepts starting with a variety of logic formalisms — Hilbert/Frege systems, tableaux, sequents, and natural deduction in both propositional and first-order logic, as well as transformations between these formalisms. Topics like circuit design, resolution, cutting planes, Hintikka sets, paramodulation, and program verification, which do not appear frequently in logic books are discussed in detail.

SYSTEMS MEDICINE FOR HUMAN SPACEFLIGHT

edited by Mark Shelhamer (Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, USA) & Erik Antonsen (Massachusetts General Hospital, USA)

NOBEL LECTURES

IN PHYSIOLOGY OR MEDICINE (2016 – 2020)

edited by Bo Angelin (Karolinska Institutet, Sweden)

This edited volume makes the case that a systems approach is needed for long-term spaceflight missions. Due to distance from Earth and the impossibility of resupply or rapid return, these flights will entail unprecedented autonomy on the part of the crew. This autonomy includes the need for local clinical decision support and other assistance with urgent medical concerns. The advantage of a systems approach to medical needs in human spaceflight is that it enables a systematic and repeatable methodology for identifying and developing the individual pieces of the spacecraft systems based on the human system needs that are unique to that problem and environment.

Featured Contents: Preface: What is Systems Medicine and Why is it Needed for Spaceflight? (Mark Shelhamer, Erik Antonsen); An Overview of Habitat Systems Supporting Human Spaceflight (David Klaus); Systems Medicine in NASA Medical Operations (Rahul Suresh, Moriah S Thompson); Computational Modeling and Systems Medicine (Lauren McIntyre, Jerry Myers, Karen Ong, Dana Levin); Operational Paradigms: Low Earth Orbit and Beyond (James Reilly, Daniel M Buckland, Erik Antonsen); and others.

Readership: Spaceflight professionals, medical professionals and students.
