OCEAN WAVE DYNAMICS edited by Ian Young & Alexander Babanin (University of Melbourne, Australia) Ocean waves are important for many reasons. They are the major environmental impact on in the design of coastal or offshore structures. Ocean waves are also fundamental to the processes of coastal flooding and beach erosion. They will play a major role in storm related coastal flooding which will rise in frequency as a result of sea level rise. Ocean waves are also an important part of the coupled ocean-atmosphere system. They determine the roughness of the ocean surface and hence have an impact on winds, fluxes of energy, gases and heat to the ocean and even the stability of ice sheets. More details on Page 24

by Edward E Williams & John A Dobelman (Rice University, USA) This book is about an intellectual fraud, one that has become part of legal doctrine that has greatly influenced decisions all the way up to the United States Supreme Court. The “efficient market hypothesis” (EMH), born from the Random Walk theory, started out as an honest attempt to improve insights into how financial markets work, but eventually became almost a religion that every financial economist had to buy into, or risk professional crucifixion. The EMH began over a half century ago. It posits that share prices reflect all available market information, and that it is impossible to consistently outperform the market. More details on Page 34

AN EVENTFUL JOURNEY TO UNIFICATION OF ALL THE FUNDAMENTAL FORCES
by Arjun Tan (Alabama A & M University, USA) & Robert C Reynolds (STAR Dynamics, USA)
by Robert Delbourgo (University of Tasmania, Australia) The author shows that one can successfully unify gravity with electromagnetism geometrically by adding a single complex anticommuting coordinate to spacetime, which can be associated with the property of ‘electricity’. By adding extra four anticommuting properties (‘chromicity’ and ‘neutrinicity’), associated with strong and weak interactions, one can get a unified picture of all the natural forces and particles including the ‘standard model’: The whole construct relies upon the full specification of events and automatically allows for replication of particle families. The monograph traces the history of attempts of unification before explaining the author’s ‘where – when – what’scheme.

MATHEMATICAL FOUNDATIONS OF QUANTUM FIELD THEORY
by Albert Schwarz (University of California at Davis, USA) The book is very different from other books devoted to quantum field theory, both in the style of exposition and in the choice of topics. Written for both mathematicians and physicists, the author explains the theoretical formulation with a mixture of rigorous proofs and heuristic arguments; references are given for those who are looking for more details. The author is also careful to avoid ambiguous definitions and statements that can be found in some physics textbooks.
Confinement and manipulation of photons using microcavities have triggered intense research interest in both basic and applied physics for more than a decade. Prominent examples are whispering gallery microcavities which confine photons by means of continuous total internal reflection along a curved and smooth surface. The long photon lifetime, strong field confinement, and in-plane emission characteristics make them promising candidates for enhancing light-matter interactions on a chip. In this book, we will introduce different ultra-high-Q whispering gallery microcavities, and focus on their applications in enhancing light-matter interaction, such as ultralow-threshold microlasing, highly sensitive optical biosensing, nonlinear optics, cavity quantum electrodynamics and cavity optomechanics.
In terms of topics, almost all other books are devoted to relativistic quantum field theory, conversely this book is concentrated on the material that does not depend on the assumptions of Lorentz-invariance and/or locality. It contains also a chapter discussing application of methods of quantum field theory to statistical physics, in particular to the derivation of the diagram techniques that appear in thermo-field dynamics and Keldysh formalism. It is not assumed that the reader is familiar with quantum mechanics.
Featured Contents: High-Q Lithium Niobate Microcavities and Their Applications; Second-Order Nonlinear Effects and Photon Scattering in Ultra-high-Q Crystalline WGMRs; Organic Self-Assembled Microcavities and Microlasers; Lasing; ParityTime Symmetry; Comb and Microsoliton; Resonance Assisted Tunneling in Weakly Deformed Microcavity; and others.
Contents: Principles of Quantum Theory; Quantum Mechanics of Single-Particle and Non-Identical Particle Systems; Quantum Mechanics of a System of Identical Particles; Operators of Time Evolution: S(t, t0) and Sα(t, t0); and others.

TULLIO REGGE: AN ECLECTIC GENIUS
edited by Carlos Pérez de los Heros (Uppsala University, Sweden)
From Quantum Gravity to Computer Play edited by Leonardo Castellani (University of Eastern Piedmont, Italy), Anna Ceresole (National Institute for Nuclear Physics, Turin, Italy), Riccardo D’Auria (Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy) & Pietro Fré (University of Turin, Italy)
This book introduces the reader to how fundamental topics in particle physics can be studied with the largest neutrino telescopes currently in operation. D u e t o t h e i r l a r ge size, reaching cubickilometer volumes, and their wide energy response, these unusual detectors can provide insight on neutrino oscillations, dark matter searches or searches for exotic particles, new neutrino interactions or extra dimensions, among many other topics. Lacking a man-made neutrino “beam”, neutrino telescopes use the copious flux of neutrinos continuously produced by cosmic rays interacting in the Earth’s atmosphere, as well as neutrinos from astrophysical origin. They have therefore access to neutrinos of higher energies and much longer baselines than those produced in present accelerators, being able to search for new physics at complementary scales than currently available in particle physics laboratories around the world. Contents: Introduction; Neutrino Telescopes in Operation and Future Projects; The Atmospheric Neutrino Flux; Neutrino Cross Sections; Standard Neutrino Oscillations ; Non-Standard Neutrino Oscillations and Tests of Lorentz Invariance; Dark Matter Scenarios Beyond the Vanilla SUSY WIMP; Magnetic Monopoles, Strangelets, Nuclearites, and Q-Balls; TeV-Gravity Searches; Large Extra Dimensions; Primordial Black Hole Signatures. Readership: Graduate students and researchers in par ticle physics and astrophysics.
Featured Contents: Black Hole Stability under Perturbations; Regge Poles; Regge Calculus and Discrete Gravity; Hamiltonian Formulation of General Relativity; Quantum Vortices; The Group Manifold Approach to (Super-) Gravity Theories; 2+1 Quantum Gravity; Methods of Algebraic Geometry; Popularization of Science; Reminiscences; Full Bibliography of Scientific Works; and others.

This volume of original articles, collected papers and commentaries by contemporary scholars illustrates the work of Tullio Regge, a giant in the panorama of theoretical physics of the second half of the 20th century, probably the most influential Italian physicist after Enrico Fermi. His brilliant contributions to quantum theory and to general relativity have marked significant turning points in the development of scientific knowledge: Regge poles, Regge behaviour, Regge calculus and his geometric approach to general relativity and its extensions, and continue to have a profound impact on the work of the large theoretical community today. Moreover, his public engagement for the dissemination of scientific culture, his mastering of multimedia technology for outreach and play, and his support for important social causes such as the fight against pseudosciences and the rights of the disabled make him a charismatic character across time, space and disciplines.

APPLICATION-DRIVEN QUANTUM AND STATISTICAL PHYSICS A Short Course for Future Scientists and Engineers (Volume 3: Transitions)
BOOKS
by Jean-Michel Gillet (CentraleSupélec, ParisSaclay University, France & Centrale Pékin, Beihang University, China)
TOPICS ON STRONG GRAVITY
This third volume covers several basic and more advanced subjects about transitions in quantum and statistical physics. The first part describes how the quantum statistics of fermions and bosons differ but also under what condition they both can merge into the classical-particlestatistics framework seen in Volume 2. The second part introduces time-dependent transitions between quantum states. The time evolution of a simple two-level model gives the minimum background in order to provide more details on the laser’s principle and its numerous uses. by Alexey Stakhov (International Club of the Golden Section, Canada & Academy of Trinitarism, Russia) & Samuil Aranson (Russian Academy of Natural History, Russia)
There are connections between invariant theory and modular forms since the times of Felix Klein, in the 19th century, connections between codes and lattices since the 1960’s. The aim of the book is to explore the interplay between codes and modular forms. Here modular form is understood in a wide sense (Jacobi forms, Siegel forms, Hilbert forms). Codes comprises not only linear spaces over finite fields but modules over some commutative rings. The connection between codes over finite fields and lattices has been well documented since the 1970s. Due to an avalanche of results on codes over rings since the 1990’s there is a need for an update at book level.
Volume I is the first part of the 3-volume book Mathematics of Harmony as a New Interdisciplinary Direction and “Golden” Paradigm of Modern Science. “Mathematics of Harmony” rises in its origin to the “harmonic ideas” of Pythagoras, Plato and Euclid, this 3-volume book aims to promote more deep understanding of ancient conception of the “Universe Harmony, “ the main conception of ancient Greek science, and implementation of this conception to modern science and education. This 3-volume book is a result of the authors’ research in the field of Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Section and their applications. It provides a broad introduction to the fascinating and beautiful subject of the “Mathematics of Harmony, “ a new interdisciplinary direction of modern science. This direction has many unexpected applications in contemporary mathematics, theoretical physics and computer science.

MATHEMATICAL POPULATION GENETICS AND EVOLUTION OF BACTERIAL COOPERATION
edited by Mark Burgin (University of California, Los Angeles, USA) & Gordana Dodig-Crnkovic (Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden & Mälardalen University, Sweden)
by Volker Hösel, Christina Kuttler & Johannes Müller (Technical University Munich, Germany)
The book presents results of collaboration across research fields within info-computational and infostructural frameworks, in attempt to better theoretically and conceptually capture the phenomena of information, and its dynamics (such as computation and communication), as they appear on different levels of organization, on different scales and in different contexts.
Social life of bacteria is in the focus of recent research. Bacteria are simple enough to be accessible by science, but still complex enough to show cooperation, division of labor, bet-hedging, cross-talk and synchronized activities, and a rich variety of social traits. A central question of evolutionary theory is the explanation why this social life did develop, and why these systems are evolutionary stable. This book introduces the reader into the theory of evolution, covering classical models and as well as recent developments. The theory developed is used to represent the up-to-date understanding of social bacteria. This book will be useful for students and lecturers interested in mathematical evolutionary theory, as well as for researchers as a reference. Contents: Neutral Evolution; FrequencyI n d e p e n d e n t S e l e c t i o n ; Fr e q u e n c y Dependent Selection; Moran and WrightFisher Model; Hardy-Weinberg Model; Fisher’s Fundamental Theorem of Evolution; Kingman Coalescence; Site-Frequency Spectrum; Ewens Sampling Formula; Seedbanks and Quiescence; Evolution on Graphs; Game Theory; Replicator Equation; Multilevel Evolution and Price Equation; Hamilton’s Rule; Inclusive Fitness; Adaptive Dynamics; Classification of Bacterial Social Traits; Kin Recognition and Punishment; Quorum Sensing; Cooperation Mediated by Plasmids; Red Queen and Red King; Evolutionary Suicide.

The aim of the book is to present a theory that explains the physics behind the phenomena during the deformation of densely packed granular media. The physics that describes such features is rather subtle and is developed from the micro to macro level (the latter is the continuum mechanics level that is used in practical applications). It requires the analysis of anisotropy and the heterogeneity of the packing evaluated against the background of a frictional inter-particle interaction.

ARCHITECTURE RESISTANT CITY
GREENING THE URBAN HABITAT
Histories, Maps and the Architecture of Development
A Quantitative and Empirical Approach
BOOKS
by David Kim Hin Ho (University of Hertfordshire, UK & National University of Singapore, Singapore)
by Eunice Seng (The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong)
Increasing urban greenery has been observed to enhance the quality of our built environment, and in turn, the quality of life of its inhabitants. The book shows readers how to do so using the GnPR, which it presents as an important urban complement of the leaf area ratio (LAI) concept, through an in-depth discussion of three key aspects of the GnPR. It proposes optimal levels of GnPR for various land-use types and how these levels are benchmarked against current levels of greenery provision; stipulates the greenery quantum which encourages the concentration of some plants, especially native trees and certain local species; and advocates the development of ecological or natural landscapes over manicured gardens. The book also discusses the impact of various levels of GnPR provision with the inevitable capital and maintenance costs of greening built environments, and how they affect the application of the GnPR guidelines.
This vivid book is an inquiry into the stagnation between the development of architectural practice and the progress in urban modernization. It is about islands as territories of resistance. It is about dense places where multitudes dwell in perennial contestations with the city on every front. It is about the histories, tactics and spaces of everyday survival within the hegemonic sway of global capital and unstoppable development. It is preoccupied with making visible the culture of resistance and architecture’s entanglement with it. It is about urban resilience. It is about Hong Kong, where uncertainty is status quo. Contents: Author’s Note; Prologue: Islandness and Resistance; Maps: Territories of Contestation; Noirs: The City, the Woman and Other Spaces; Towers: Technologies, Jardine House and Metropolitan Visions; Composites: The City in a Building; Narratives: Composite Building Studies; and others.
Readership: City planners, architects and civil engineers involved in the conceptualisation, design and building of urban habitations, who aspire to increase the liveability of their cities.
Readership: Rich in historical, theoretical and visual analysis, this original monograph is essential reading for anyone who is interested in understanding and interpreting urban built environments as an accumulation and contestation of spaces and territories. Students of architecture, art and design history, urban design, urban history, urban studies, geography, Asian and cultural studies, will find the methodological approaches, investigations and visualizations useful in shaping their own perspectives on the urban.

This book introduces the concepts and previous research of the Hencky bar-chain/net model, before demonstrating how beams, columns, arches, rectangular plates and circular plates could be successfully modelled by HBM. HBM comprises rigid bars connected by frictionless hinges with elastic rotational springs (and a system of torsional springs in the cells for plates). In the treatment of the above-mentioned structures, HBM is found to be mathematically equivalent to the first order central finite difference method (FDM). So HBM may be regarded as the physical structural model behind the FDM.

OCEAN WAVE DYNAMICS
ADVANCED CONTINUUM THEORIES AND FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSES
edited by Ian Young & Alexander Babanin (University of Melbourne, Australia)
BOOKS
by James D Lee (The George Washington University, USA) & Jiaoyan Li (Idaho National Laboratory, USA)
Ocean Wave Dynamics is the most up-todate book of its kind on the three main processes responsible for the generation and evolution of ocean waves: (i) atmospheric input from the wind, (ii) wave breaking and (iii) nonlinear interactions.
This comprehensive vo l u m e p r e s e n t s a unified framework of continuum theories. It indicates that (i) microcontinuum theories (micromorphic and micropolar theories) are natural extension of classical continuum mechanics, and (ii) classical continuum mechanics is a special case of microcontinuum theories when the deformable material point is idealized as a single mathematical point. The kinematics and basic laws are rigorously derived. Based on axiomatic approach, constitutive theory is systematically derived for various kinds of materials, ranging from Stokesian fluid to thermo-visco-elastic-plastic solid. Material force and Thermomechanical-electromagnetic coupling are introduced and discussed.
Ocean waves are important for many reasons.
Featured Contents: Classical Continuum Mechanics: Kinematics; Stresses; Balance Laws; Constitutive Theory; Simple Thermoviscoelasticity; Microcontinuum Field Theories: Kinematics; Stresses and Balance Laws; Constitutive Theory; Thermomechanical Materials; Finite Element Analyses: Preliminaries; Finite Element Formulation of Classical Continuum Mechanics; Dynamic Crack Propagation; Special Topics: Nonlocal Theory; Poromechanics; Mechanobiology; Nematic Liquid Crystal; and others.

BOOKS
This book commemorates the eclectic intellectual life of scientist and artist Walter Gilbert. It presents all of his most influential works throughout his scientific career. His scientific explorations covered a broad spectrum of fields: theoretical physics; molecular biology, from finding messenger RNA to elucidating the regulation of the lac operon to understanding DNA replication; gene evolution and origin of life; genomics; bioinformatics; and beyond. He created widely used concepts such as “Exon”, “Intron” and “RNA World”. Eleven reflective essays by Gilbert are included for the first time, discussing both his scientific studies and anecdotes from his own life. These firsthand accounts record the historical and intellectual contexts for his most monumental scientific discoveries, including his Nobel Prize-winning sequencing method. Memorial chapters, contributed by Gilbert Laboratory alumni, describe the passion, ambition, and efforts of Gilbert and several generations of young scientists under his leadership. Finally, the book collects a few fine pieces of artwork created by Gilbert in recent years. It documents a life of genius and creativity that could inspire others for years to come.
This invaluable book provides the first description of the diverse and fascinating functions of heme in life processes for a broad audience. It begins with an introduction of the intricate chemical proper ties of heme and the history of early observations of human diseases associated with heme. It then proceeds to describe the versatile roles of heme in controlling diverse molecular and cellular processes germane to human life and disease processes. In the second edition, a new chapter is devoted to describe findings about heme uptake, transport, and trafficking of heme synthesis intermediates in mammals. Additionally, a chapter about the newly discovered roles of elevated heme biosynthesis and uptake in lung tumorigenesis is included.

EVIDENCE-BASED CLINICAL CHINESE MEDICINE
The Experience of Twelve Small and Medium-sized Nations with Changing Their Healthcare Systems
Volume 17: Colorectal Cancer by Brian H May (RMIT University, Australia) & Yihong Liu (Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, China)
by Kieke Okma, retired (McGill University, Canada & Catholic University, Leuven, Belgium) This book presents the health reform experiences over the past three decades of twelve small and medium-sized nations that are not often included in international comparative studies in this field. The major conclusion of the study is that despite many similarities in policy goals, policy challenges and in the menu of policy options for countries that seek to offer universal coverage to their population, the health reforms of the nations in this book did not converge into one direction or model. However, we found several widespread policy experiences that are relevant for others, too.
BOOKS
This seventeenth volume of the Evidencebased Clinical Chinese Medicine series aims to provide a multi-faceted “whole evidence” analysis of the management of Colorectal Cancer in integrative Chinese medicine. The following features mark the importance of this book in the field: • An innovative “whole evidence” approach: This book combines multiple types of evidence from multiple sources to provide a unique and comprehensive assessment of the available evidence for Chinese medicine in colorectal cancer. • Clinically informative and relevant: This book integrates the results of meta-analyses of clinical trial data with evidence from the classical Chinese medicine literature, and the recommendations in contemporary textbooks and clinical guidelines for the application of Chinese medicine. • Developed by a skilled team: The authors are internationally recognised, well-respected leaders in the field of Chinese medicine and evidence-based medicine with strong track records in research with multiple publications in the field of cancer.
The conclusions contain both empirical findings and theoretical conclusions of interest to policy-makers and scholars of international comparison. It is accessible for academics, healthcare managers and students as well as a wider audience of readers interested in the changes in healthcare across the world. Advancing Social Enterprise by Melodena Stephens (Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government, UAE) A Social Enterprise Venture (SEV) is defined as an organization, initiative or startup that has a strong social innovation characteristic focusing on a scalable and sustainable social wealth creation or sustainable living at the individual or community level. Most books that deal with SEVs, unfortunately still focus on non-profits. Current market trends indicate non-profits need more sustainable funding mechanisms for survival. With the growing role of the private sector in the development arena, as highlighted by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, all firms need to relook entrepreneurship from a ‘business-with-purpose’ lens. The fact that venture capitalists/private equity firms are acquiring social ventures, or that SEVs are being divested, reinforces the need to understand which business models work. One of the biggest barriers for growth of SEVs is scalability and internationalization. This book fills the present gap between research and practice; and the non-profits and for-profit worlds.

The book, Economic Empowerment of Women in the Islamic World, discusses the economic, social, and political rights and status of women in Islam, which is theoretically given by the Islamic Jurisprudence (Shariah law). The chapters in this volume will address historical practices in comparison to the status of women in the contemporary Muslim world. Men and women in Islam, regardless of their age, social class, and education, are equal as citizens and individuals, but not identical in their rights and responsibilities. It can be observed from Islamic history that in the early age of Islam, women were given full confidence, trust, and high responsibilities in leadership, educational guidance, and decision-making.

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPLICATIONS OF TRADE AND FINANCIAL MARKET INTEGRATION FOR BUSINESS CYCLES
edited by John Whalley (Western University, Canada), Manmohan Agarwal (Research and Information Sys. for Developing Countries, India)
by Mario J Crucini (Vanderbilt University, USA) The book provides the reader with an over view of key developments in international business cycle research that build upon the pioneering work of Nobel Laureates Finn Kydland and Edward Prescott, who built the first dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model of the closed economy, patterned along the lines of the US economy. As globalization has extended the span of international economic relationships, these modeling approaches have become essential for understanding business cycles today. These models and empirical methods are particularly relevant to our understanding of how domestic innovation, productivity change or policy action (fiscal, monetary and trade-related) feeds back across economies.

A RANDOM WALK TO NOWHERE How the Professors Caused a Real “Fraud-on-the-Market”
by Andrey Itkin (New York University, USA)
BOOKS
by Edward E Williams & John A Dobelman (Rice University, USA)
This book was written with the purpose of presenting new results previously developed in a series of papers and explaining them consistently, starting from the general concept of Dupire, Derman and Kani and then concentrating on various extensions proposed by the author and his co-authors. This volume collects all the results in one place, and provides some typical examples of the problems that can be efficiently solved using the proposed methods. This also results in a faster calibration of the local and implied volatility surfaces as compared to standard approaches.
This book is about an intellectual fraud, one that has become part of legal doctrine that has greatly influenced decisions all the way up to the United States Supreme Court. This theory dominated research in the academic financial community from the outset, and has continued to do so for decades. Meanwhile, the evidence for above-average profit-making opportunities in the markets has been unfairly suppressed.
The methods and solutions presented in this volume are new and recently published, and are accompanied by various additional comments and considerations. Contents: Preface; General Concept of Local Volatility: Local Volatility and Dupire’s Equation; Local Volatility Surface and NoArbitrage; The Black-Scholes Model: Analytical Methods of Building the Local Volatility Surface; Regression-Based Methods; The Variance Gamma Model: An Expanded Local Variance Gamma Model; Geometric Local Variance Gamma Model; Bibliography.
Contents: Preface; Fraud, Lies, and Statistics; The Early History of Modern Financial Economics; The Birth of the Efficient Market Hypothesis; Earlier Views of Market Efficiency; The Impact of Information and Regulation on Market Efficiency; Tests of the EMH; Anomalies; and others. GUANXI AND BUSINESS (3rd Edition)
BOOKS
edited by Wei Shan (National University of Singapore, Singapore) & Lijun Yang (South China University of Technology, China)
by Yadong Luo (University of Miami, USA) This book delineates social and cultural principles and philosophies underlying guanxi dynamics, along with guanxi’s social norms that have been long embedded in the Chinese society. Although guanxi is embedded in almost every part of social life in China, companies demonstrate different needs and capacity toward guanxi cultivation. Chinese firms develop guanxi as a strategic mechanism to overcome competitive and resource disadvantages by cooperating and exchanging favors with government authorities and other stakeholders. This book presents an integrative framework about guanxi development according to institutional, strategic, and organizational factors. It further articulates how foreign firms adaptively develop their own legitimate and effective guanxi in China’s highly dynamic and complex environment.
This book discusses lessons and challenges of metropolitan circles development and urbanization in Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America and Africa. The book examines the effects of local governance systems, centrallocal relations, and administrative borders on metropolitan area development. It surveys economic, social and environmental issues, with an emphasis on how interconnectivity, circular economy, and climate issues should be integrated into megaregion development planning. The chapters are selected papers from the international conference on metropolitan circles development and urbanization jointly held by the Institute of Public Policy (IPP) at the South China University of Technology and UNESCO in 2018. Contributors from the US, the UK, Japan, France, Singapore, Indonesia, Mexico, Tanzania present their questions, observations, and analyses in a narrative and descriptive style which appeal to a wide range of audience.

The book also examines the concept of community leadership and its impact on community well-being. Several specific case studies are examined in depth. While examining political leadership from a macro theoretical and empirical perspective, the book also adopts historicalanthropological perspectives to analyse case studies. The case studies also examine policy formulation and implementation to look at the role of government in handling community-level issues.

21ST-CENTURY MARITIME SILK ROAD INITIATIVE
CHINA’S RURAL LABOR MIGRATION AND ITS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Aims and Objectives, Implementation Strategies and Policy Recommendations
by Xiaoguang Liu (Renmin University of China, China)
BOOKS
by Jianglin Zhao (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China)
The book systematically presents the three most important characteristics of China’s economic development and summarizes them as “the riddle of China’s rising return on capital”, “the riddle of China’s rising rate of saving”, and “the riddle of ‘Okun’s law’ not applicable to China”. It empirically and theoretically analyses the “three riddles” from the perspective of the migration of rural labor. It also proposes macro-policies and developmental strategies to address the “three riddles”.
The concept of a “21stCentury Maritime Silk Road” refers to the p ro p osed m ode r ntime version of the ancient Maritime Silk Road that connected China with the rest of Asia, and even parts of eastern Africa. It is a strategic initiative designed to increase investments in and foster collaboration among all countries along the ancient Silk Road. This volume presents the latest research findings on the directions and implementation methods related to the initiative, and contributors offer policy suggestions, include promoting effective macroeconomic policies, extending microeconomic cooperation schemes, removing trade barriers and facilitating financial integration, building infrastructures that can connect all subregions in Asia, and increasing people-to-people exchanges and industrial cooperation.
Contents: Research Background and Ideas of Analysis; Overview of the Transfer of Agricultural Labor; The Enigma of the Transfer of Agricultural Labor and the Rising Return on Capital; Riddle of the Transfer of Agricultural Labor and the Rise of the Rate of Household Saving in China; The Transfer of Agricultural Labor and the Okun Relationship in China; The Policy Implications of the Transfer of Agricultural Labor; Appendices: Proof of Lemma in Chapter IV; Driving Factors and Spillover Effects of the Transfer of Agricultural Labor; Estimation of China’s Agricultural Labor Productivity; References; Acknowledgements.
Fetaured Contents: Strategic Planning and Objectives of the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative; Macro Economic Basis for the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative; Microeconomic Basis for the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative: from the Perspective of Value Chain; Global Value Chain and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road; The 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road and Asian Infrastructure Connectivity; and others.

COLONIAL LEGACIES AND CONTEMPORARY STUDIES OF CHINA AND CHINESENESS
WSPC-ZJUP Series on China’s Regional Development
POLITICAL PARTICIPATION AND INSTITUTIONAL INNOVATION
Unlearning Binaries, Strategizing Self edited by Chih-yu Shih (National Taiwan University, Taiwan), Prapin Manomaivibool (Chulalongkorn University, Thailand), Mariko Tanigaki (University of Tokyo, Japan) & Swaran Singh (Jawaharlal Nehru Univ., India)
A Case Study of Zhejiang by Shengyong Chen (Zhejiang Gongshang University, China), Dongsheng Zhong (Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, China), Xingzhi Wu (Zhejiang Institute of Administration, China) & Bingxuan Zhang (Zhejiang Gongshang University, China)
The book is about the colonial construction of intellectual perspectives of the colonized population in terms of the latter’s approach to China and Chineseness in the modern world. Relying on the available oral histories of senior China scholars primarily in Asia, authors from various postcolonial and colonial sites present these multiple routs of self-constitution and reconstitution through the use of China and Chineseness as category. The revealed manipulation of this third category, romantically as well as antagonistically, is easier than straightforward self-reflection for us all to accept that, coming to identities and relations, none, even subaltern, is politically innocent or capable of epistemological monopoly. Through comparative studies, it shows a way of selfunderstanding that does not always require discursive construction of border or cultural consumption of any specific “other”.
The participation of citizens in democratic politics serves as an indicator to measure a country’s development, its political modernization and political civilization.
Featured Contents: Re-arranged Colonial Relations — In the Eyes of the Colonized Self: Exploring China Consciousness of Preindependence India (Swaran Singh); China as Relational Other — In the Eyes of Multiple Selves: Anglo-Chinese Studies in Post-WWII Hong Kong: The Perspectives of Colonial Languages (Mariko Tanigaki); Emerging Pluralist Relations — In the Eyes of Autonomous Self: Pondering China Studies in the Philippines as an Academic Practice and Scholarly Inquiry (Tina Clemente); and others.
Contents: From Election to Governance: New Development of Grassroots Democracy in Zhejiang Province; Democratic Consultation: Deliberative Democracy and Local Public Policy; Hearing: Interest Expression and Interest Integration Mechanism; “Our Round Table Meeting”: TV Political Consultation and Public Consultation; Citizen Participation Platform on Internet; Zhejiang Experience in Promoting the Public Orderly Political Participation and Its Value.

RESEARCH ON COMMUNITY CONSTRUCTION IN RURAL CHINA
BIOPHYSICS, BIOLOGICAL AND MEDICAL PHYSICS
by Jiquan Xiang (Central China Normal University, China)
THE PHYSICS OF LIVING MATTER: SPACE, TIME AND INFORMATION
Rural community construction is an important topic of study in China. This book examines the development of various construction models, the reasons behind their emergence, and provides analyses based on their characteristics, problems, and trends.
Proceedings of the 27th Solvay Conference on Physics 27th Solvay Conference on Physics Brussels, Belgium, 19 – 21 October 2017 edited by David Gross (UC Santa Barbara), Alexander Sevrin (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium & International Solvay Institutes, Belgium) & Boris Shraiman (UC Santa Barbara) Ever since 1911, the Solvay Conferences have shaped modern physics. The format is quite different from other conferences as the emphasis is placed on discussion. The 27th edition held in October 2017 in Brussels and chaired by Boris Shraiman continued this tradition and addressed some of the most pressing open questions in the fields of biophysics, gathering many of the leading figures working on a wide variety of profound problems.
This book is also integrated with comparative analyses on urban and rural communities, and comprises of examples from China and other countries, including United States, Japan, South Korea, and more. Featured Contents: Reconstruction of Rural Communities of Social Life: An Introduction; Village Communities of Imperial Ages and Their Evolution; Transformation of Rural Communities after the Founding of the People’s Republic of China; Construction of Rural Communities since the Beginning of the 21st Century; Foundation and Types of the Construction of Rural Communities; Organization and Governance Structure of Rural Communities; Social Management of Rural Communities and Its Innovation; Rural Community Services and Their Ways; Change and Reconstruction of Rural Community Culture; and others.
The proceedings contain the “rapporteur talks” giving a broad overview with unique insights by distinguished renowned scientists. These lectures cover the five sessions: “Intra-cellular Structure and Dynamics”, “Cell Behavior and Control”, “Inter-cellular Interactions and Patterns”, “Morphogenesis”, “Evolutionary dynamics”. In the Solvay tradition, the proceedings also include the prepared comments to the rapporteur talks. The discussions among the participants — expert, yet lively and sometimes contentious — have been edited to retain their flavor and are reproduced in full. The reader is taken on a breathtaking ride through a fascinating field which is expanding rapidly and which was for the first time the subject of a Solvay Conference on Physics.
