N OTA B L E T I T L E S THINKING MATTERS
Study Guide
Module I Critical Thinking as Creative Problem Solving by Gary Mar (Stony Brook University, USA) The ancient Roman orator Horace (65 B.C. – 8 B.C.) wrote, “Control your mind or it will control you.” In today’s society we are faced with more information, and more complex information, than ever. Faced with making decisions, we can feel overwhelmed and helpless. One way to become less helpless — to gain control over our lives — is to gain control over our own thinking. We can feel helpless when faced with this barrage of information, opinions, data, and conflicting arguments if we lack the skills to quickly grasp and critically evaluate them. This book is designed to impart these kinds of skills. More details on Page

edited by Khawaja Husnain Haider (Sulaiman AlRajhi Medical School, Saudi Arabia) During the last two decades, stem cells have progressed from merely a concept to a vibrant field of regenerative medicine which is aimed at addressing the root cause of the problem rather than conventional methods of intervention that mostly provide symptomatic relief. Stem cell therapy either alone or in combination with the other established treatment strategies is a hope for patients who suffer from the “incurable” diseases such as Alzheimer, diabetes, myocardial infarction etc. Besides aspirations in the clinical perspective, stem cells provide excellent in vitro disease models for drug development. CHINA’S MILLENNIUM TRANSFORMATION The Belt and Road Initiative by Da Hsuan Feng This is a book on the Belt and Road Initiative, written from an unusual perspective — it is written by someone who was born in India but raised in Singapore; who has never spent a day of schooling in the greater China (Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) but has Chinese heritage; who eventually built a long and distinguished career in the West. With such an atypical background, he took an off-the-beaten-path approach by asking the fundamental question of how such an important initiative, began entirely by China, can deeply impact and transform the millennium mindset of Chinese. WEAPONS OF THE RICH Strategic Action of Private Entrepreneurs in Contemporary China by Thomas Heberer (University Duisburg-Essen, Germany) & Gunter Schubert (Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, Germany) This book provides a fresh perspective on the political agency of private entrepreneurs in contemporary China. Most Chinese scholarship describes this group as being politically acquiescent due to systematic co-optation by the party state. This book, however, argues that private entrepreneurs should be understood, and analytically conceptualized, as a ‘strategic group’ that makes use of different formal and informal channels to safeguard and expand its interests, though so far it has not challenged the current regime. The History of Proving the Earth Rotates
BOOKS
by Peter Kosso (Northern Arizona Univ, USA) This book of fers a historical account, from ancient Greek science to the theory of relativity and ultimately to videos taken from outer space, of how this widely known truth came to be. Using an accessible and entertaining narrative suitable for anyone interested in astronomy, physics, or the history of either, Kosso clarifies the use of evidence to prove that the Earth rotates, and deals with the tension between the claims that the Earth is absolutely in motion, yet all motion is relative. The book also explores the general nature of scientific evidence and method, and confronts challenges to science from outside the discipline.
The chapters in the first three sections of the book were either written by these scientists or based on interviews with them. These chapters explain, for a non-specialist reader, the science analysis involved. They also describe how the project was conceived, and chronicle some of the many and diverse challenges involved in advancing our understanding of the universe. The final section is trans-disciplinary, including inputs from a philosopher, an anthropologist, visual artists and a poet. Scientific collaborations are human endeavours and the book aims to convey a sense of the wider context within which science comes about.

PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS ON MECHANICS (2nd Edition)
edited by Swee Cheng Lim, Choy Heng Lai (National University of Singapore, Singapore) & Leong Chuan Kwek (National University of Singapore, Singapore) This volume is a compilation of carefully selected questions at the PhD qualifying exam level, including many actual questions from Columbia University, University of Chicago, MIT, State University of New York at Buffalo, Princeton University, University of Wisconsin and the University of California at Berkeley over a twenty-year period. Topics covered in this book include dynamics of systems of point masses, rigid bodies and deformable bodies, Lagrange’s and Hamilton’s equations, and special relativity.
All these topics are treated in a unified way using the Matlab App to combine text, figures, formulae and numeric input and output. In this way the reader may vary parameters and see the results in real time. That experience aids in building up an intuitive feel for the many specific problems given in this text.
This latest edition has been updated with more problems and solutions and the original problems have also been modernized, excluding outdated questions and emphasizing those that rely on calculations. The problems range from fundamental to advanced in a wide range of topics on mechanics, easily enhancing the student’s knowledge through workable exercises. Simple-to-solve problems play a useful role as a first check of the student’s level of knowledge whereas difficult problems will challenge the student’s capacity on finding the solutions.

COMPUTATIONAL, MATHEMATICAL AND THEORETICAL PHYSICS ROMAN JACKIW 80th Birthday Festschrift
BOOKS
edited by Antti Niemi (University of Stockholm, Sweden), Terry Tomboulis (University of California, Los Angeles, USA) & Kok Khoo Phua (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) Professor Roman Jackiw is a theoretical physicist renowned for his many fundamental contributions and discoveries in quantum and classical field theories, ranging from high energy physics and gravitation to condensed matter and the physics of fluids. Among his major achievements is the establishment of the presence of the famous Adler – Bell – Jackiw anomalies in quantum field theory, a discovery with far-reaching implications for the structure of the Standard Model of particle physics and all attempts to go beyond it. Other important contributions, among many, that one may mention here are the topological mass term in gravity and gauge theories, and the fractionalization of fermion number and charge in the presence of topological objects.

BOOKS
Ultracold Neutrons is a guide to a fascinating topic. It describes how a simple new idea in experimental neutron physics has changed the landscape of what is often called “fundamental physics.” Ultracold neutrons (UCNs) are neutrons moving at the low speed of a bicycle rider. They were produced for the first time 50 years ago (in 1968) and are distinguished from ordinary neutrons with much higher energies by their ability to be confined in “neutron bottles” for durations up to several hundred seconds. This is possible since they are reflected back and forth from the container walls many thousands of times with very little loss. As a result of these long observation times, their properties and interactions with the environment can be studied with superb precision.

CHEMICAL ELEMENTS IN LIFE
by Wansen Zhu (Fudan University, China)
by Kazuchika Ohta (Shinshu University, Japan)
BOOKS
translated by Caiyun Fang (Fudan University, China) & Lin Xia
In nature, a number of molecules self-assemble to form various aggregation states. In these aggregation states, numerous functions, which have never been observed in one molecule, are developed. Even for the same compound, the different aggregation states exhibit totally different physical properties in density, hardness, optical and electrical properties, medicinal effect, etc. For pursuing the functionality of materials, it may be indispensable to understand the molecular aggregation states of crystals, liquid crystals, glass, colloids, etc. In this book, the author will focus on the basis of polymorphic phenomena of crystals and liquid crystals and their physical properties. After reading this book, you will be able to change your viewpoint of matter from traditional limited “three states of matter” to novel “numerous states of matter.”
How did life begin? Starting with the Big Bang Theory, this book systematically discusses scientific findings and hypotheses on topics such as the origin of chemical elements, formation of life on Earth, evolution of life elements, their subtle chemical reactions and miraculous physiological functions. The content in this book is carefully arranged to focus on major scientific discoveries in various disciplines related to life science, with particular emphasis on the vital relationship between chemical reactions in the human body and health, shedding light on hot issues of public concern such as nutrition and human longevity. Important concepts covered include chemical circulation and the dynamic balance of elements both within ourselves, and with the environment. Ultimately, the takeaway message is that the success of keeping the tree of life evergreen depends not only on the advancement of life science research, but also on whether human beings can follow the laws of nature and maintain a harmonious relationship with the earth.

POCKET ANATOMY OF CEREBROVASCULAR IMAGING AND TOPOGRAPHY
During the last two decades, stem cells have progressed from merely a concept to a vibrant field of regenerative medicine which is aimed at addressing the root cause of the problem rather than conventional methods of intervention that mostly provide symptomatic relief.

EVIDENCE-BASED CLINICAL CHINESE MEDICINE
TWO WEEKS TO PACES Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills
Volume 13: Post-Stroke Spasticity by Claire Shuiqing Zhang (RMIT University, Australia) & Shaonan Liu (Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, China)
by Hasan Haboubi (Swansea University, UK) This book was born out of the philosophy that all doctors sitting their MRCP PACES already have the knowledge and skill to pass the exam, but just require guidance in the correct logical approach that the Royal College is looking for.
The thirteen volume in the Evidence-based Clinical Chinese Medicine series is a must read for Chinese medicine practitioners interested in neurology or rehabilitation. Using a ‘whole evidence’ approach, this book aims to provide an analysis of the management of post-stroke spasticity with Chinese and integrative medicine. This book describes the understanding and management of post-stroke spasticity with conventional medicine and Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine treatments used in past eras are analysed through data mining of classical Chinese medicine books. Several treatments are identified that are still used in contemporary clinical practice.

The book has, therefore, quite unlike other MRCP PACES books, avoided any attempts at being a definitive text. Rather, it has focused on the key aspects that the authors believe are required to pass the examination, in particular focus on presentation style. Whilst medicine is indeed an ocean, the most commonly examined topics have been selected to reflect the likely scenarios a candidate will face — as the old adage goes — “common things occur commonly”.

The Kyoto Protocol capped the emissions of the main emitters, the industrialized countries, one by one. It also created an innovative financial mechanism, the Carbon Market and its Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), which allows developing nations to receive carbon credits when they reduce their emissions below their baselines. The carbon market, an economic system that created a price for carbon for the first time, is now used in four continents, is promoted by the World Bank, and is recommended even by leading oil and gas companies. However, one critical problem for the future of the Kyoto Protocol is the continuing impasse between the rich and the poor nations.

RISK FACTORS AND CONTAGION IN COMMODITY MARKETS AND STOCKS MARKETS
Textbook COMMON SENSE MACROECONOMICS
edited by Stéphane Goutte (Université Versailles St Quentin en Yveline, France) & Khaled Guesmi (Paris School of Business, France & University of Ottawa, Canada)
BOOKS
by Ravi Batra (Southern Methodist Univ., USA) In a world of negative interest rates, extreme inequality and trilliondollar budget deficits, it is safe to say that conventional macroeconomics needs an o ve r h a u l . C o m m o n Sense Macroeconomics is an innovative guide to various concepts of macroeconomic analysis. Presented in a student-friendly and accessible way, this textbook is an ideal introduction to all who seek to foresee economic developments and address some of the key problems of our time.
The link between commodities prices and the business cycle, including variables such as real GDP, industrial production, unemployment, inflation, and market uncertainty, has often be debated in the macroeconomic literature. To quantify the impact of commodities on the economy, one can distinguish different modeling approaches. First, commodities can be represented as the pinnacle of cross-sectional financial asset prices. Second, price fluctuations due seasonal variations, to dramatic market changes, political and regulatory decisions or technological shocks may adversely impact producers who use commodities as input. This latter effect creates the so called “commodities risk”. Additionally, commodities price fluctuations may spread off to other sectors in the economy, via contagion effects.
Contents: Preface; Introduction: Microeconomic Foundations and Common Sense; The General Standard of Living; GDP Accounting; The Classical Micro Model; The Classical Macro Model; The Neoclassical Model; The Keynesian Model; The Neo-Keynesian Model; A Classi-Keynesian Model; The Anatomy of Stock Market Bubbles and Crashes; The Wage Gap, Global Imbalances and Poverty; Long Run Growth and Growth Cycles; The Supply of Money; An Open Economy; Economic Reform; Notes; References; Index.
Our objective in this book, lies in answering the following research questions: What are the interactions between commodities and stock market sentiment? Do some of these markets move together overtime? Whether the financialization in energy commodities occurs after the 2008 global financial crisis? These questions are essential to understand whether commodities are driven only by their fundamentals, or whether there is also a systemic component influenced by the volatility present within the stock markets.

CROWDASSET Crowdfunding for Policy Makers
BOOKS
edited by Oliver Gajda (European Crowdfunding Network, Belgium), Dan Marom (Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel) & Tim Wright (twintangibles, UK) Crowdfunding is already transforming the way many entrepreneurs and enterprises around the globe think about community engagement and fundraising for various causes. This book puts forth the belief that policy makers, public servants and various governments, municipalities and regions can significantly benefit from crowdfunding through employing crowd-related mechanisms within their frameworks and using their crowd as an asset — a crowdasset. Using real-world examples, this book explores the opportunities presented by crowdfunding and crowdfunded innovation, and how major policy makers are already using crowdfunding and crowd mechanisms to accelerate innovation, engagement and community transformation. A guide for those involved in crowdfunding, CrowdAsset brings readers through the journey of maximizing crowd impact.

CHINA’S MILLENNIUM TRANSFORMATION
WSPC-ZJUP Series on China’s Regional Development
CHINA’S REGIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
The Belt and Road Initiative by Da Hsuan Feng
A Case Study of Wenzhou
This is a book on the Belt and Road Initiative, written from an unusual perspective — it is written by someone who was born in India but raised in Singapore; who has never spent a day of schooling in the greater China (Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) but has Chinese heritage; who eventually built a long and distinguished career in the West. With such an atypical background, he took an off-the-beaten-path approach by asking the fundamental question of how such an important initiative, began entirely by China, can deeply impact and transform the millennium mindset of Chinese.
by Jinchuan Shi, Xiangrong Jin, Wei Zhao & Weidong Luo (Zhejiang University, China)
Three main outcomes of the BRI have been embedded directly or indirectly throughout the book: Supercontinent, Neo-Renaissance and Cultural Communications. The author felt that these three outcomes are the possible mitigation for the world in the 21st century, facing existential challenges.
Featured Contents: Research on Wenzhou Model: Review and Prospect; Wenzhou Model: Institutional Change and System Innovation; Wenzhou Model: Regional Economic Development and Industrialization Path; The Growth Path and Mechanism of Wenzhou Private Enterprises; From a Family Workshop to a Modern Enterprise: Case Study of the Chint Group; Development of Wenzhou Centralized Industrial Wholesale Markets; and others.

BOOKS
This book studies the institutional change and economic development in Wenzhou since China’s reform and opening-up. It concludes that the most important characteristic of Wenzhou model is that the city is the first to promote industrialization and urbanization by privatization and marketization in Zhejiang. As privatization and marketization reflect reform, and industrialization and urbanization represent development, Wenzhou model promotes development through economic reform. In the early years of the reform and openingup, the people of Wenzhou boldly faced the constraints of traditional planned economy, bravely explored the market-oriented reform and opened up a new path to regional economic development. This book also contains the stories of the people of Wenzhou.

BOOKS
edited by Filip Abraham (Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium) & Zhaoyong Zhang (Edith Cowan University, Australia)
This book aims to contribute to the debate on “authoritarian resilience” with empirical studies from a range of perspectives, including regime support, nationalism, environmental movement, ethnic conflicts and internet management. The chapters in this book centre around two separate but intertwined themes and are collated to discuss on the stability of China in Xi Jinping’s era. The first theme examines changes in political attitudes and values among Chinese citizens, and the second focuses on the responses of the party-state and how it has made sophisticated the machine of social control.
2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the start of China’s reform and opening up polic y, which created China’s growth miracle with an annual average growth rate of around 9.5 percent. China’s rapid rise and internationalization has also generated profound impacts both regionally and globally. This book aims to bring together academics and researchers at policy institutions to discuss ongoing research on a wide range of theoretical and empirical issues related to China’s rapid rise and internationalization from both regional and global perspectives. Featured Contents: Introduction: China’s Rise and Internationalization: Challenges and Impacts Regionally and Globally (Filip Abraham and Zhaoyong Zhang); The Rise of China in Global Trade and Foreign Direct Investment: EU-China Trade and Investment Relations in Turbulent Times: A European Perspective (Filip Abraham, Yannick Bormans and Jan Van Hove); The Financial Aspects of China’s Growth and Development: Financial Integration and China’s Growth Surge (Rod Tyers and Yixiao Zhou); Innovation and Sustainable Growth in the Chinese Economy: Technology Level, Market Competition and Firms’ Innovation Behavior: Evidence from Chinese High-Tech Enterprises (Hui-hong Liu and Xin-miao Zhou); and others.

Strategic Action of Private Entrepreneurs in Contemporary China
COMPUTATIONAL, MATHEMATICAL AND THEORETICAL PHYSICS CPT AND LORENTZ SYMMETRY
This book provides a fresh perspective on the political agency of private entrepreneurs in contemporary China. Most Chinese scholarship describes this group as being politically acquiescent due to systematic cooptation by the party state. This book, however, argues that private entrepreneurs should be understood, and analytically conceptualized, as a ‘strategic group’ that makes use of different formal and informal channels to safeguard and expand its interests, though so far it has not challenged the current regime.
Proceedings of the Eighth Meeting on CPT and Lorentz Symmetry Eighth Meeting on CPT and Lorentz Symmetry Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, 12 – 16 May 2019 edited by Ralf Lehnert (Indiana University, USA) This book contains the Proceedings of the Eighth Meeting on CPT and Lorentz Symmetry, held at Indiana University in Bloomington on May 12 – 16, 2019. The Meeting focused on tests of these fundamental symmetries and on related theoretical issues, including scenarios for possible violations. Topics covered at the meeting include experimental and observational searches for CPT and Lorentz violation involving: accelerators and colliders; astrophysical birefringence, dispersion, and anisotropy; atomic and molecular spectroscopy; cavities, oscillators, resonators; Cherenkov radiation; clock-comparison measurements; CMB polarimetry; cosmic rays; decays of atoms, nuclei, and particles; equivalence-principle tests with matter and antimatter; exotic atoms, muonium, positronium; gauge bosons, the Higgs boson; gravimetry; gravitational waves; high-energy astrophysical observations; hydrogen and antihydrogen spectroscopy; lasers, masers; matter-wave interferometry; meson and baryon properties; neutral-meson interferometry; neutrino mixing and propagation, neutrinoantineutrino oscillations; particle-antiparticle comparisons; photon and particle scattering; post-Newton gravity in the solar system and beyond; second- and third-generation particles; short-range gravity; sidereal and annual time variations, compass asymmetries; single-top and top pair production; spacebased missions; spin-gravity couplings; spin precession; time-of-flight measurements; torsion and nonmetricity; trapped particles, ions, and atoms.
State-business relations in contemporary China should thus be understood not in terms of mere clientelism, but as a dynamic symbiosis in which private entrepreneurs contribute substantially to policy and institutional change. This book is based on several years of comparative empirical fieldwork across China. With its rich and unique qualitative data and insights, this volume contributes significantly to our understanding of the political behaviour. Contents: Introduction; The Rise and Current State of China’s Private Sector; Private Sector Development and StateBusiness Relations Post-Mao China: The State of the Field; Conceptual Framework: Private Entrepreneurs as a ‘Strategic Group’; Investigating Strategic Action via Formal Channels; Informal and Connective Strategic Action; Conclusion; Lists of Graphs and Tables; Annex. Readership: Undergraduate students of Chinese studies, Asian politics and society, and economics, as well as entrepreneurs.
Readership: Student and researchers.
