CONDENSED MATTER PHYSICS

FRUSTRATED SPIN SYSTEMS (3RD EDITION) edited by H T Diep (University of Cergy-Pontoise, France) Frustrated spin systems have been first investigated five decades ago. Well-known examples include the Ising model on the antiferromagnetic triangular lattice studied by G H Wannier in 1950 and the Heisenberg helical structure discovered independently by A Yoshimori, J Villainn and T A Kaplan in 1959. However, extensive investigations on frustrated spin systems have really started with the concept of frustration introduced at the same time by G Toulouse and by J Villain in 1977 in the context of spin glasses. The frustration is generated by the competition of different kinds of interaction and/or by the lattice geometry. As a result, in the ground state all bonds are not fully satisfied. SOLVING LINEAR PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS Spectra by Martin Schechter (University of California, Irvine, USA) Partial differential equations arise in many branches of science and vary in many ways. No one method can be used to solve all of them, and only a tiny percentage have been solved. In this book, we consider the general linear partial differential equation of arbitrary order m. Even this involves more methods that are known. We ask a simple question: when can an equation be solved and how many solutions does it have? We find that the answer is surprising even for equations with constant coefficients. More details on Page 8

BOOKS

In frustrated Ising spin systems, a number of spins behave as free spins. In frustrated vector spin systems, the ground-state configuration is usually non-collinear. The ground state of frustrated spin systems is therefore highly degenerate and new induced symmetries give rise to unexpected behaviors at finite temperatures. Many properties of frustrated systems are still not well understood at present. Theoretically, recent studies shown in this book reveal that established theories, numerical simulations as well as experimental techniques have encountered many difficulties in dealing with frustrated systems. In some sense, frustrated systems provide an excellent testing ground for approximations and theories. Experimentally, more and more frustrated materials are discovered with interesting properties for applications.

THE BASIC PHYSICS OF QUANTUM THEORY

MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF JOSEPHSON JUNCTION NETWORKS

by Basil S Davis (Xavier University of Louisiana, USA)

An Introduction

BOOKS

by Roberto De Luca (Università degli Studi di Salerno, Italy)

This book is an introductory course on quantum theory accessible to anyone who is interested in obtaining an insider’s knowledge of the subject, but who may not have studied physics at the college level. No mathematics is required beyond middle school algebra. Exercises are provided throughout the book, with answers at the back. This book can be used for self-study or as a textbook in an undergraduate or high school curriculum.

The study of the magnetic response of Josephson junction networks can be useful in outlining the behaviour of existing superconducting electronic devices, in conceiving new types of magnetic sensors, and in describing the low-field magnetic properties of granular superconductors. In the present work a wide introduction to Josephson junction networks is provided. The Josephson equations are introduced by means of Ohta’s semi-classical model and a simple description of the magnetic response of multiply connected superconductors is given. The analysis of the magnetic response of Josephson junction networks is gradually built up from simple interferometers to threedimensional lattices of superconducting devices. The analytic description of these systems may be applied when fabricating ultrasensitive vectorial magnetic field sensors and interpreting the low-field magnetic properties of superconducting granular systems.

Key Features: • Trains the reader to do quantum theory without the need for learning calculus or linear algebra • Develops the theory directly from the historical experiments and shows how the abstraction of quantum theory is experimentally verifiable • Based on a course that was developed and taught successfully at the undergraduate level Contents: Introduction; Newtonian Physics; Statistical Mechanics; The Concept of a Field; The Ultraviolet Catastrophe; Absorption and Emission of Radiation; Matter Waves; The Special Theory of Relativity; The Geometry of Space and Time; The Heart of Quantum Theory; Angular Momentum and Spin; Quantum Theory and Relativity; Tunneling: Quantum Magic?; The Spatial Wave Function; Conclusion.

Textbook LINEAR ALGEBRA

In the Context of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity

Core Topics for the First Course by Dragu Atanasiu (University of Borås, Sweden) & Piotr Mikusiński (University of Central Florida, USA)

by Anzhong Wang (Baylor University, USA)

The book is an introduction to linear algebra intended as a textbook for the first course in linear algebra. In the first six chapters we present the core topics: matrices, the vector space Rn, orthogonality in Rn, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and linear transformations. The book gives students an opportunity to better understand linear algebra in the next three chapters: Jordan forms by examples, singular value decomposition, and quadratic forms and positive definite matrices. In the first nine chapters everything is formulated in terms of R^n. This makes the ideas of linear algebra easier to understand. The general vector spaces are introduced in Chapter 10. The last chapter presents problems solved with a computer algebra system. At the end of the book we have results or solutions for odd numbered exercises.

Contents: Fundamentals of Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity; Plane Gravitational Waves; Colliding Plane Gravitational Waves; Collision of Pure Gravitational Plane Waves; Collisions of Gravitational Waves with Matter Fields; Isometries to Interiors of Black Holes.

Contents: Matrices; The Vector Space R n ; Orthogonality in R n ; Determinants; Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors; Linear Transformations; Jordan Forms by Examples; Singular Value Decomposition; Quadratic Forms and Positive Definite Matrices; Vector Spaces; Solutions with CAS; Answers to Selected Exercises.

BOOKS

The book starts with an overview on the fundamentals of the Newman-Penrose formalism and a brief introduction to distribution theory, with which the author systematically develops a mathematical description of spacetimes of colliding plane waves. Then, the author presents a frame-independent definition of polarization of a plane gravitational wave in a curved spacetime, studies in detail the gravitational Faraday rotation of two plane gravitational waves, and shows that each of them can serve as a medium to the other precisely due to their nonlinear interactions. Exact solutions are also presented, which represent a variety of models including the collisions of two plane gravitational waves and the collisions of a plane gravitational wave with a dust shell, a massless scalar wave, an electromagnetic wave, or a neutrino wave. The formation of spacetime singularities due to nonlinear interactions and the effects of gravitational wave polarization on the nature of singularities are also explored.

by Martin Schechter (University of California, Irvine, USA) Partial differential equations arise in many branches of science and vary in many ways. We begin with these equations, first finding conditions which allow us to solve and obtain a finite number of solutions. We show how to obtain those solutions by analyzing the structure of the equation very carefully. A substantial part of the book is devoted to this. Then we tackle the more difficult problem of considering equations with variable coefficients. A large number of such equations are solved by comparing them to equations with constant coefficients.

In the present book, we consider first the forms of the affine line or the additive group, classification o f s u c h fo r m s a n d detailed analysis. The forms of the affine line considered over the function field of an algebraic curve define the algebraic surfaces with fibrations by curves with moving singularities. These fibrations are investigated via the Mordell – Weil groups, which are originally introduced for elliptic fibrations. This is the first book which explains the phenomena arising from purely inseparable coverings and Artin – Schreier coverings. In most cases, the base surfaces are rational, hence the covering surfaces are unirational. There exists a vast, unexplored world of unirational surfaces. In this book, we explain the Frobenius sandwiches as examples of unirational surfaces. Featured Contents: Forms of the Affine Line: Picard Scheme and Jacobian Variety; Forms of the Affine Line; Groups of Russell Type; Hyper-Elliptic Forms of the Affine Line; Purely Inseparable and Artin – Schreier Coverings: Vector Fields and Infinitesimal Group Schemes; Zariski Surfaces; QuasiElliptic Fibrations; Mordell – Weil Group; Rational Double Points: Basics on Rational Double Points; Deformation of Rational Double Points; and others.

Contents: The Importance of the Spectrum; Functional Analysis; Function Spaces; Partial Differential Operators; General Lp Theory; Relative Compactness; Elliptic Operators; Operators Bounded from Below; SelfAdjoint Extensions; Second Order Operators; Quantum Mechanics. In this book we consider THE MUFFIN PROBLEM: what is the best way to divide up m muffins for s students so that everyone gets m/s muffins, with the smallest pieces maximized. We look at both procedures for the problem and proofs that these procedures are optimal.

The book presents, for the first time, a detailed analysis of harmonizable processes and fields (in the weak sense) that contain the corresponding stationary theory as a subclass. It also gives the structural and some key applications in detail. These include Levy’s Brownian motion, a probabilistic proof of the longstanding Riemann’s hypothesis, random fields indexed by LCA and hypergroups, extensions to bistochastic operators, Cramér – Karhunen classes, as well as bistochastic operators with some statistical applications.

This problem takes us through much mathematics of interest, for example, combinatorics and optimization theory. However, the math is elementary enough for an advanced high school student. Featured Contents: Five Muffins, Three Students; Three Muffins, Five Students; One Student! Two Students! Some Basic Theorems!; Our Plan; Three Students! Four Students! The Floor-Ceiling Theorem!; Finding Procedures; The Half Method; A Formula for f(m, 5); The Interval Method; The Midpoint Method; The Easy BuddyMatch Method; The Hard Buddy-Match Method; The Gap and Train Methods; Scott Huddleston’s Method; and others.

The material is accessible to graduate students in probability and statistics as well as to engineers in theoretical applications. There are numerous extensions and applications pointed out in the book that will inspire readers to delve deeper. Contents: Harmonizability and Stochastic A n a l y s i s ; H a r m o n i c A p p r o a c h e s fo r Integrable Processes; Applications and Extensions of Harmonizable Processes; I s o t r o p i c H a r m o n i z a b l e Fi e l d s a n d Applications; Harmonizable Fields on Groups and Hypergroups; Some Extensions of Harmonizable Random Fields.

Volume 15: Chronic Heart Failure

BOOKS

by Claire Shuiqing Zhang (RMIT University, Australia) & Liuling Ma (Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, China)

This is the first major textbook on the emerging specialty of remote healthcare. This started in the 1970s when the medical directors of the main oil companies then involved — BP, Shell and Mobil — sought help from the University sector. Together with Aberdeen University they developed a system of healthcare for the industry which brought down the mortality and morbidity levels to reduced levels. The system worked well and was validated by duplication for the different scientific populations of the British Antarctic Survey. Subsequently it was translated to the oilfields of the Middle East — Qatar (Offshore and Onshore), Abu Dhabi (ADMA and ADCO) and Oman (PDO) where its success was repeated.

The fifteenth volume of the Evidence-based Clinical Chinese Medicine series examines the management of chronic heart failure with Chinese medicine using a ‘whole evidence’ approach. Readers are provided with an overview of the current management of chronic heart failure with both conventional medicine and contemporar y Chinese medicine. This is followed by a detailed analysis of how chronic heart failure was viewed and managed in past eras. Contents: Introduction to Chronic Heart Failure; Chronic Heart Failure in Chinese Medicine; Classical Chinese Medicine Literature; Methods for Evaluating Clinical Evidence; Clinical Evidence for Chinese Herbal Medicine; Pharmacological Actions of the Common Herbs; Clinical Evidence for Other Chinese Medicine Therapy; Clinical Evidence for Combined Chinese Medicine Therapies; Summary of Evidence.

Contents: Introduction; History of Development of Remote Healthcare and Research; First Aid; Communications and Telemedicine; Medical Co-ordination and Management; Evacuation from Remote and Hostile Places; Acute Medical Conditions; Acute Surgical Conditions; Psychiatric Emergencies; Preparation for Disasters in Remote Worksites; Psychological Aspects of Major Trauma; and others.

BOOKS

This is a handbook that shows the reader how to construct an intellectual pedigree. It is also a history of science monograph because the completed intellectual pedigrees can be used individually or collectively to trace the influences of mentoring in the life sciences. The author uses Hermann Joseph Muller (1890 – 1967) (which includes his own intellectual pedigree) to show how knowledge was shifted from Italy to Germany and England, to France, and then to the American Colonies. Through Muller, the author goes in two directions, one leading to Huxley, Darwin, and Newton. The second leads to Agassiz, Malpighi, Borelli, and Galileo. The author also shows, from comparing 60 additional intellectual pedigrees, that about one third go to Newton, one third to Galileo and the rest to other icons of the past (e.g., Linnaeus, Lavoisier, Gay-Loussac, Leibniz). It shows how small was the pool of available scientists in the universities before the mid-19th century.

INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS

THEORY OF GENERAL ECONOMIC EQUILIBRIUM by Hans Keiding (University of Copenhagen, Denmark)

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to general equilibrium theor y, covering the standard topics as well as the developments of the theory over the past fifty years. This ensures that the reader gains a thorough account of what has been established both in pure theory and in applications.

FAILED GLOBALISATION Inequality, Money, and the Renaissance of the State by Heiner Flassbeck (University of Hamburg, Germany) & Paul Steinhardt

In addition to the basic topics, this book elaborates on fields which are relevant but not mentioned frequently in this context. The material covered includes international trade, growth, finance and implementation, and it offers a broader view than what is usual in texts on general equilibrium theory. This book would make for suitable reading for undergraduate and graduate courses in macroeconomics.

Given the continuing dominance of that discredited theory today, the world lacks a viable conceptual framework for global cooperation among nations, and appropriate national economic policies. With this book, the authors show how such a framework can be built on the basis of a modern and empirically sound economic theory.

Contents: Exchange Economies; Economies with Production; Welfare Theorems and Market Failures; Cooperative Game Theory and Equilibria; Large Economies; Uniqueness and Stability of Equilibria; The Equilibrium Manifold and Probabilistic Equilibrium Theory; General Equilibrium and Imperfect Competition; Incentives and Mechanisms in General Equilibrium; Market Failures; Time and General Equilibrium; Overlapping Generations Economies; Uncertainty and General Equilibrium; and others.

Contents: Globalisation and Digitisation — The Challenges of Our Time; The Democratic State and the Economy as a Whole; Neoliberalism as Regression; Money as a Domain of the State; Modern Economic Policy and the Role of the State. Readership: Students, Professionals, People.

Readership: Undergraduate and graduate students and lecturers.

Globalisation is considered a success story. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the political divides between East and West Germany, nothing seemed to stand in the way of peaceful cooperation between people everywhere. Under the precepts of economic liberalism, by removing institutional obstacles to international trade and capital flows, a spontaneous global order would emerge, and the dream of a world populated by free and prosperous global citizens would eventually come true.

POPULISTS AND PROGRESSIVES

From Social-Psychological Profiling to Assessing the Risk

The New Forces in American Politics

BOOKS

by Steven Rosefielde (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA) & Daniel Quinn Mills (Harvard Business School, USA)

by Sagit Yehoshua (Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel & Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, Israel)

Populists and Progressives alerts readers to dramatic changes in the ideological and political structure of America’s Democratic and Republican parties roiling Washington and shaping the 2020 presidential election. The book carefully elaborates the substance of each movement and analyses the social, political and economic forces driving them. It assesses their staying power and prospects in the 2020 presidential election. The analysis reveals that most contemporary American political commentary is intensely partisan and relies on obsolete notions of Democrat and Republican party doctrine and rivalry, obscuring the transformation of American society, politics and economy. Populists and Progressives assists readers to dispel the fog, allowing them to judge the present danger and help in the search for consensus solutions. The book also predicts the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

This book explores the process of terrorists behavioural analysis, starting from the social-psychology profile of terrorists to the development of constructed risk assessment tools. Most of the research for this book was conducted with the cooperation of the Intelligence Department of the Israeli Prison System, where qualitative in-depth interviews with leaders of terrorist organisations in prisons around Israel were conducted by the author. This book hopes to fill in gaps in the literature relating to the psychology of terrorist groups’ leaders in prisons by analysing the main aspects of their social, professional, and personal lives, as well as their attitudes and perceptions. The book will also cover the practical aspects of risk assessment that can be established from such social-psychology profiles, along with the relevant tools that has been developed in recent years, and hopes to better inform counterterrorism initiatives and policymaking, as well as improving methods of communication, counterterrorism, and conflict resolution. Contents: Introduction: The Social-Psychology Profile of Terrorist Leaders in Israeli Prisons; Literature Review and Methodology; Social Influence Factors; Personality Profile; Mind Sets; Leadership; Imprisonment; Assessing the Risk; Conclusions: From Terrorists Social Psychology Profiling to Assessing the Risk.

Featured Contents: New Forces in American Politics; When Life isn’t Going Right, You Should Go Left: The Progressive Movement; Fear from All Sides; Why Radicalization is Happening; “For God’s Sake, Don’t Try to Improve Their Minds”; Politics in Motion; What’s Going on?; Our Future; and others.

Readership: Students and professionals in the field of counterterrorism studies, and the general public interested in counterterrorist initiatives.

Hong Kong’s Year of Water and Fire edited by Zuraidah Ibrahim & Jeffie Lam (South China Morning Post, Hong Kong) by South China Morning Post Team

Featured Contents: Xi Jinping’s Thought and Mainland ASEAN (Vira Somboon); The Effects of Lancang – Mekong Cooperation on the Mainland ASEAN Countries: Opportunities or Challenges? (Yang Baoyun and Patcharinruja Juntaronanont); China’s Rising Influence in Mainland ASEAN: Implications for and Responses from Myanmar (Aung Kyaw); Contemporary Economic Influences of China and India in Mainland ASEAN: Comparative Perspectives (Anupama Devendrakumar); China’s Rising Influence in Thailand: Transborder Human Mobility and Its Impacts (Supang Chantavanich); Increasing Reliance of Vietnam on the Chinese Economy: Causes and Impacts (Tuan Pham); Vietnam – China Economic Cooperation: Aid or Burden? (Nguyen Van Chinh and Dinh Thi Thanh Huyen); and others.

This book is for anyone seeking to understand not just what Hong Kong has gone through but also the global phenomenon of increasingly leaderless protest movements. Fuelled by profound angst about the place of millenial youth in society, widening income inequality, and the speed of digital communications, Hong Kong was in retrospect ripe to be the laboratory for a new-age protest movement, nearly a decade after the Middle East’s Arab spring. The essays in the book collectively compose a picture of a society in trauma, bent and broken, but showing signs of an uncanny ability to bounce back.

BOOKS

In today’s rapid rise and expansion of China’s influence all around the world and in ASEAN during the past two decades, there has been an increasing awareness of various countries and regions adjusting themselves to the new trends, both in terms of opportunities and risks alike. This has become necessary due to the rapid changes in many aspects — political landscapes, economic issues, as well as social and cultural considerations. This book provides timely insights on some of the latest issues pertaining to ASEAN and China, rapidly shifting interactions and upcoming geostrategic challenges.

SCMP’s reporting team looks back at Hong Kong’s most wrenching political crisis since its return to Chinese rule in 1997. Anti-extradition bill protests that morphed rapidly into a wider anti-government movement in 2019 left no aspect of the city untouched, from its social compact to its body politic to its open economy. The demonstrations which continued well into 2020 have tested every institution of the city, from the civil service to the police to the courts and even its rail transport operator, and from offices and businesses to universities and schools, and from churches to families and even friends.

PROBING NUCLEONS AND NUCLEI IN HIGH ENERGY COLLISIONS

TOGETHER WE PROSPER A Memoir of Daniel Teo

Proceedings of INT Program INT-18-3 INT Program INT-18-3 The Institute for Nuclear Theory, Seattle, WA, USA, 1 October – 16 Nov 2018

by Bak Lim Kua (Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations, Singapore) & How Seng Lim

edited by Alexei Prokudin (Pennsylvania State University Berks, USA & Jefferson Lab, USA), Yoshitaka Hatta (Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA), Yuri Kovchegov (The Ohio State University, USA) & Cyrille Marquet (École Polytechnique, France & CNRS, France)

In tracing the developments of a family, we trace the opportunities paved and traditions passed on from generation to generation, as seen in the rise of Tong Eng Group as well as the family’s pride for Daniel’s granduncle, World War II hero Lim Bo Seng, and Lim Loh, a well-known building contractor in the early 20th century. Through oral history accounts and research, the authors provide a unique look into life in Singapore and China from the 19th up to the 21st century through the lens of a family.

This book contains proceedings of the 7-week INT program dedicated to the physics of the Electron – Ion Collider (EIC), the world’s first polarized electron – nucleon (ep) and electron – nucleus (eA) collider to be constructed in the United States. The 2015 NSAC Long Range Plan recommended EIC as the “highest priority for new facility construction following the completion of FRIB”. The primary goal of the EIC is to establish precise multidimensional imaging of quarks and gluons inside nucleons and nuclei.
