ELECTRONIC PROPERTIES OF DIRAC AND WEYL SEMIMETALS by Eduard V Gorbar (Taras Shevchenko National Kiev University, Ukraine & Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics, Ukraine), Vladimir A Miransky (Western University, Canada), Igor A Shovkovy (Arizona State University, USA) & Pavlo O Sukhachov (Western University, Canada & Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, Sweden) The monograph reviews various aspects of electronic properties of Dirac and Weyl semimetals. After a brief discussion of 2D Dirac semimetals, a comprehensive review of 3D materials is given. The description starts from an overview of the topological properties and symmetries of Dirac and Weyl semimetals. In addition, several low-energy models of Dirac and Weyl quasiparticles are presented. The key ab initio approaches and material realizations are given. The monograph includes detailed discussions of the surface Fermi arcs, anomalous transport properties, and collective modes of Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Superconductivity in these materials is briefly addressed. More details on Page 11
OPTOMAGNONIC STRUCTURES Novel Architectures for Simultaneous Control of Light and Spin Waves edited by Evangelos Almpanis (NCSR “Demokritos”, Greece & National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece) Understanding, controlling and, more importantly, enhancing the interaction between light (photons) and spin waves (magnons) can be, among others, a step towards the realization of magnonmediated microwave-to-optical transducers for quantum computing applications or hybrid solid-state spintronic-photonic interconnections. In this respect, the development of novel composite multifunctional micro/nanostructures — so-called optomagnonic — which simultaneously control optical and spin waves and enhance their interaction, is particularly attractive. EQUIDISTRIBUTION OF DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS Time-Quantitative Second Law by Jozsef Beck (Rutgers University, USA) We know very little about the time-evolution of many-particle dynamical systems, the subject of our book. Even the 3-body problem has no explicit solution (we cannot solve the corresponding system of differential equations, and computer simulation indicates hopelessly chaotic behaviour). For example, what can we say about the typical time evolution of a large system starting from a stage far from equilibrium? What happens in a realistic time scale? The reader’s first reaction is probably: What about the famous Second Law (of thermodynamics)? More details on Page 17

RIGHT-WING VIOLENCE IN THE WESTERN WORLD SINCE WORLD WAR II by Leonard Weinberg (University of Nevada, USA) Right-wing violence is undergoing a revival on both sides of the Atlantic. In Europe, much of this violence has been a backlash against migrants and their offspring carried out by ‘lone-wolves’ and organized groups. In the United States, race, gender, and religious hatreds have triggered far more than ‘normal’ levels of violence, including a resurgence of attacks on Jews and other anti-Semitic behavior. Examining the contours of the current violence, this book traces the development of the right-wing in the decades following the end of World War II. More details on Page 35

CHINESE ASTROLOGY AND ASTRONOMY An Outside History
BOOKS
by Ivan Zhelyazkov (Sofia University, Bulgaria) & Ramesh Chandra (Kumaun University, India)
by Xiaoyuan Jiang (Shanghai Jiao Tong Univ., China) Translated by: Wenan Chen (Ningbo Univ., China)
The book provides a comprehensive overview of the eruptive and wave phenomena in the solar atmosphere. One of the ongoing problems in solar physics is the heating of the solar corona. Currently there is a competition between two mechanisms in explaining the heating, i.e., dissipation of energy by waves and small scale frequent coronal magnetic reconnection. However, some studies indicate this may be a joint effect of these two possible mechanisms. Kelvin – Helmholtz Instability (KHI) of propagating magnetohydrodynamic modes in solar flowing structures plays an important role in the solar atmosphere. It can trigger the onset of wave turbulence leading to effective plasma heating and particle acceleration. KHI is a multifaceted phenomenon and the purpose of this book is to illuminate its (instability) manifestation in various solar jets like spicules, dark mottles, surges, macrospicules, Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray jets, as well as rotating, tornado-like, jets, solar wind, and coronal mass ejections.
Chinese Astrology and Astronomy: An Outside History discusses the ancient Chinese’s needs and reasons for engaging in astronomy. It presents the study on ancient astronomical phenomena and manuals, and analyzes the cosmological views of ancient Chinese. It also expounds the nature and functions of astronomy to ancient Chinese, as well as its difference from the western modern astronomy of today, exploring on new issues in a bold but logical fashion, and offering arguments that challenge even the views of authority. This book stands as a translated version, by Chen Wenan, an associate professor of Ningbo University, of the original Chinese publication Tianxue Waishi by Jiang Xiaoyuan. Contents: Introduction; What Kind of People in Ancient China Needed Tianxue?; What Kind of People Were Engaged in Tianxue in Ancient China?; Government-run Tianxue: Tradition and Exception; Astronomical Phenomena and Tianxue Literature (1); Astronomical Phenomena and Tianxue Literature (2); Universe in the Eye of Ancient Chinese; Sino-foreign Exchanges in Ancient Tianxue (1); Sino-foreign Exchanges in Ancient Tianxue (2); Western Astronomy Finds its Way to the Orient in Modern Times (1); Western Astronomy Finds its Way to the Orient in Modern Times (2); Collision between the East and the West during the Ming and Qing Dynasties; Legacies of Chinese Tianxue; Index; Postscript.

WAVES AND RAYS IN ELASTIC CONTINUA (4th Edition) by Michael A Slawinski (Memorial University, Canada)
BOOKS
by Andrej Bóna (Curtin University, Australia) & Michael A Slawinski (Memorial University, Canada)
Seismology, as a branch of mathematical physics, is an active subject of both research and development. Its reliance on computational and technological advances continuously motivates the developments of its underlying theory. The fourth edition of Waves and Rays in Elastic Continua responds to these needs.
Characteristics and asymptotics of partial differential equations play an important role in mathematical physics since they lead to insightful solutions of complex problems that might not be solvable otherwise. They constitute, however, a difficult subject, and the purpose of this book, with its additions and refinements that led to its third edition, is to present this subject in an accessible manner, without decreasing the rigor. As any method, characteristics and asymptotics have their limitations. This important issue is addressed in the last chapter, where we discuss caustics, which must be understood in applications of the method, and which constitute a fertile ground for further mathematical research.
The book is both a research reference and a textbook. Its careful and explanatory style, which includes numerous exercises with detailed solutions, makes it an excellent textbook for the senior undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as for an independent study. Used in its entirety, the book could serve as a sole textbook for a year-long course in quantitative seismology. Its parts, however, are designed to be used independently for shorter courses with different emphases.

This book deals with the subject of secondary energy spectroscopy in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The SEM is a widely used research instrument for scientific and engineering research and its low energy scattered electrons, known as secondary electrons, are used mainly for the purpose of nanoscale topographic imaging. This book demonstrates the advantages of carrying out precision electron energy spectroscopy of its secondary electrons, in addition to them being used for imaging. The book will demonstrate how secondary electron energy spectroscopy can transform the SEM into a powerful analytical tool that can map valuable material science information to the nanoscale, superimposing it onto the instrument’s normal topographic mode imaging. The book demonstrates how the SEM can then be used to quantify/ identify materials, acquire bulk density of states information, capture dopant density distributions in semiconductor specimens, and map surface charge distributions

BOOKS
edited by Johnpierre Paglione (University of Maryland, College Park, USA), Nicholas P Butch (National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA) & Efrain Rodriguez (University of Maryland, College Park, USA)
This book constitutes a collective work, comprising seven chapters from leading researchers in the field of optomagnonics and related areas. Apart from exciting recent developments, it provides the necessary fundamental knowledge in an explanatory manner and, therefore, it is accessible to non-experts. It is suitable for PhD students, post-docs, and researchers who are willing to get engaged in optomagnonics, while selected parts could also serve as lecture material for advanced courses. With increasing demand for miniaturized optomagnonic devices, this book will be an important resource to researchers working on optomagnonics, magneto-optics, spintronics, as well as on hybrid micro/nano devices for information processing.
Despite a long tradition of sophisticated, creative materials synthesis among quantum materials researchers, a sense of broader community has been lacking. In initiating the Fundamentals of Quantum Materials Winter School held annually at the University of Maryland, we wanted to bring together the next generation of growers to learn techniques and pointers directly from senior scientists, and it turns out that we were not alone. The enthusiasm from both students and teachers has been both gratifying and invigorating. Four schools later, we can confidently say that physicists, chemists, and materials scientists, experimentalists and theorists alike, all want to know how to make a good sample. With this in mind, we asked our lecturers to record their most important ideas and share their expertise with a broader audience. This resource is a compilation of fundamental and practical guides on the modern methods of materials synthesis utilized by these experts.

The book demonstrates how the SEM can then be used to quantify/ identify materials, acquire bulk density of states information, capture dopant density distributions in semiconductor specimens, and map surface charge distributions.
The author, Fabio Sauli, is an expert with several hundreds of publications in the field. He is also the inventor of one of the major technologies described — the Gas Electron Multiplier — widely used in particle physics and other applied fields.

QUANTUM MECHANICS AND QUANTUM INFORMATION
ALGEBRA AND RELATED TOPICS ELEMENTS OF LINEAR AND MULTILINEAR ALGEBRA
Textbook
by John M Erdman ( Portland State University, USA)
This set of notes is Textbook an activity-oriented introduction to linear and multilinear algebra. The great majority of the most elementary results in these subjects are straightforward and can be verified by the thoughtful student. Indeed, that is the main point of these notes — to convince the beginner that the subject is accessible. In the material that follows there are numerous indicators that suggest activity on the part of the reader: words such as “proposition”, “example”, “theorem”, “exercise”, and “corollary”, if not followed by a proof or a reference to a proof, are invitations to verify the assertions made.
ESSENTIALS OF QUANTUM MECHANICS AND RELATIVITY
BOOKS
by Shangwu Qian (Peking University, China) Quantum mechanics and relativity are two important topics of modern physics. This book serves as an introduction to the essential topics in the fields. It is suitable for a one-semester course for undergraduate students. The book is concise and the discussions are easy to follow. Interested students can also used this as a study guide for self-learning.
This book has tried to keep the facts about vector spaces and those about inner product spaces separate. Many beginning linear algebra texts conflate the material on these two vastly different subjects.
Contents: Quantum Mechanics: Preliminaries; Postulates and One-Dimensional Problems; Matrix Mechanics; Central Forces and Angular Momentum; Summary, Problems and Solutions; Relativity: Preliminaries; Special Relativity: Kinematics; Relativistic Electrodynamics; Relativistic Dynamics; More About Tensors; General Relativity.
Contents: Vector Spaces; Linear Transformations; The Language of Categories; The Spectral Theorem for Vector Spaces; The Spectral Theorem for Inner Product Spaces; A Brief Review of Differential Calculus; Multilinear Maps and Determinants; Tensor Algebras; Differential Manifolds; Differential Forms on Manifolds; Homology and Cohomology; Stokes’ Theorem; Geometric Algebra; Clifford Algebras.

DIFFERENTIAL AND INTEGRAL EQUATIONS
METACYCLIC GROUPS AND THE D(2) PROBLEM
Trends in Abstract and Applied Analysis - Vol 10
by Francis E A Johnson (University College London, UK)
NONLINEAR HIGHER ORDER DIFFERENTIAL AND INTEGRAL COUPLED SYSTEMS
The D(2) problem is a fundamental problem in low dimensional topology. In broad terms, it asks when a three-dimensional space can be continuously deformed into a two-dimensional space without changing the essential algebraic properties of the spaces involved.
Impulsive and Integral Equations on Bounded and Unbounded Domains by Feliz Manuel Minhós (Universidade de Évora, Portugal) & Robert de Sousa (Universidade de Cabo Verde, Cape Verde)
The problem is parametrized by the fundamental group of the spaces involved; that is, each group G has its own D(2) problem whose difficulty varies considerably with the individual nature of G. This book solves the D(2) problem for a large, possibly infinite, number of finite metacyclic groups G(p, q). Prior to this the author had solved the D(2) problem for the groups G(p, 2). However, for q > 2, the only previously known solutions were for the groups G(7, 3), G(5, 4) and G(7, 6), all done by difficult direct calculation by two of the author’s students, Jonathan Remez (2011) and Jason Vittis (2019).
The systems covered here include differential and integral equations of Hammerstein-type with boundary constraints, on bounded or unbounded intervals. These are presented in several forms and conditions (three points, mixed, with functional dependence, homoclinic and heteroclinic, amongst others). This would be the first time that differential and integral coupled systems are studied systematically. Featured Contents: Boundary Value Problems on Bounded Domains: Third-Order ThreePoint Systems with Dependence on the First Derivative; Coupled Systems on Unbounded Domains: Second-Order Coupled Systems on the Half-Line; Coupled Impulsive Systems: Impulsive Coupled Systems with Generalized Jump Conditions; Coupled Systems of Integral Equations: Coupled Systems of Hammerstein Integral Equations; and others.
Contents: Projective Modules and Class Groups; Homological Algebra; The Derived Module Category; Extension and Restriction of Scalars; Swan Homomorphisms; Modules Over Quasi-Triangular Algebras; A Fibre Product Decomposition; Galois Modules; The Sequencing Theorem; A Cancellation Theorem for Extensions; Cancellation of Quasi-Swan Modules; Swan Homomorphisms for Metacyclic Groups; An Obstruction to Monogenicity; The D(2) Property.

MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS
NUMERICAL ANALYSIS AND APPROXIMATION
MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS A Concise Introduction
NONSTANDARD FINITE DIFFERENCE SCHEMES
BOOKS
by Jiongmin Yong (University of Central Florida, USA)
Methodology and Applications by Ronald E Mickens (Clark Atlanta University, USA)
Mathematical analysis Textbook serves as a common foundation for many research areas of pure and applied mathematics. It is also an important and powerful tool used in many other fields of science, including physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, finance, and economics. In this book, some basic theory of analysis is presented, including metric spaces and their properties, limit of sequences, continuous function, differentiation, Riemann integral, uniform convergence, and series.
This second edition of Nonstandard Finite Difference Models of Differential Equations provides an update on the progress made in both the theory and application of the NSFD methodology during the past two and a half decades. In addition to discussing details related to the determination of the denominator functions and the nonlocal discrete representations of functions of dependent variables, we include many examples illustrating just how this should be done. Of real value to the reader is the inclusion of a chapter listing many exact difference schemes, and a chapter giving NSFD schemes from the research literature. The book emphasizes the critical roles played by the “principle of dynamic consistency” and the use of sub-equations for the construction of valid NSFD discretizations of differential equations.
After going through a sequence of courses on basic calculus and linear algebra, it is desirable for one to spend a reasonable length of time (ideally, say, one semester) to build an advanced base of analysis sufficient for getting into various research fields other than analysis itself, and/or stepping into more advanced levels of analysis courses (such as real analysis, complex analysis, differential equations, functional analysis, stochastic analysis, amongst others). This book is written to meet such a demand. Readers will find the treatment of the material is as concise as possible, but still maintaining all the necessary details.
Contents: A Second Edition ... Why?; Introduction; Numerical Instabilities; Nonstandard Finite Difference Schemes; First-Order ODE’s; Second-Order, Nonlinear Oscillator Equations; Two FirstOrder, Coupled Ordinary Differential Equations; Partial Differential Equations; Schrodinger Differential Equations; The NSFD Methodology; Some Exact Finite Difference Schemes; Applications and Related Topics; Appendices: Difference Equations; Linear Stability Analysis; Discrete WKB Method.
Contents: Metric Spaces and Limits for Sequences; Functions on Metric Spaces; Differentiation; Riemann Integrals; Uniform Convergence; Series; Appendix: The Real Number Systems. Readership: Upper-level undergraduate students and first-year graduate students; Students from other areas who are interested.
Readership: Anyone interested; advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers and practitioners in the field of numercial analysis.

ADVENTURES IN RECREATIONAL MATHEMATICS
Time-Quantitative Second Law by Jozsef Beck (Rutgers University, USA)
Selected Writings on Recreational Mathematics and its History (In 2 Volumes)
We know very little about the time-evolution of many-particle dynamical systems, the subject of our book. Even the 3-body problem has no explicit solution. For example, what can we say about the typical time evolution of a large system starting from a stage far from equilibrium? What happens in a realistic time scale? The reader’s first reaction is probably: What about the famous Second Law (of thermodynamics)?
by David Singmaster (University College London, UK) In these 2-volume books, the readers shall have an adventure into previously unknown origins of ancient puzzles, which could be traced back to their Medieval, Chinese, Arabic and Indian sources. The puzzles are fully described, many with illustrations, adding interest to their history and relevance to contemporary mathematical concepts.
Unfortunately, there are plenty of notorious mathematical problems surrounding the Second Law. (1) How to rigorously define entropy? How to convert the well known intuitions (like “disorder” and “energy spreading”) into precise mathematical definitions? (2) How to express the Second Law in forms of a rigorous mathematical theorem? (3) The Second Law is a “soft” qualitative statement about entropy increase, but does not say anything about the necessary time to reach equilibrium.
Readership: Students and scholars of mathematics and its history, Maths teachers, general public.
The object of this book is to answer questions (1)-(2)-(3). We rigorously prove a TimeQuantitative Second Law that works on a realistic time scale. As a by product, we clarify the Loschmidt-paradox and the related reversibility/irreversibility paradox.

NEWTON’S CHICKEN
A Reader and Writer’s Guide by Jean-Luc Lebrun & Justin Lebrun (Scientific Reach, USA)
Science in the Kitchen by Massimiano Bucchi (University of Trento, Italy)
The third edition of this book aims to equip both young and experienced researchers with all the tools and strategy they will need for their papers to not just be accepted, but stand out in the crowded field of academic publishing. It seeks to question and deconstruct the legacy of existing science writing, replacing or supporting historically existing practices with principle- and evidence-driven styles of effective writing. It encourages a reader-centric approach to writing, satisfying reader-scientists at large, but also the paper’s most powerful readers, the reviewer and editor. Going beyond the baseline of well-structured scientific writing, this book leverages an understanding of human physiological limitations (memory, attention, time) to help the author craft a document that is optimized for readability.
A h i g h l y r i go r o u s , yet original and entertaining book that explores the connection between food and science. Why has science forcefully entered the kitchen from a certain moment in history? Why do scientists often use images and metaphors drawn from gastronomy?
What has futurist cooking got in common with molecular gastronomy?
Through real and fictional examples, handson exercises, and entertaining stories, this book breaks down the critical parts of a typical scientific paper (Title, Abstract, Introduction, Visuals, Structure, and Conclusions). It shows at great depth how to achieve the essential qualities required in scientific writing, namely being clear, concise, convincing, fluid, interesting, and organized. To enable the writer to assess whether these parts are well written from a reader’s perspective, the book also offers practical metrics in the form of six checklists, and even an original Java application to assist in the evaluation.
Experiments with coffee, controversies over beer and chocolate recipes guarded as if they were secret patents are the ingredients of this original, surprising account of the intersections between gastronomy and research, between laboratories and kitchens. Contents: Cookery as Science, and Science as Cookery: From Socrates to Cold Fusion; Chicken Science; Beer, Wine, Coffee, Tea, Chocolate and ... Many Controversies; A Taste of Science (and Society): From Brillat-Savarin to Molecular Cooking via Futuristic Cooking. Readership: General.

This interdisciplinary book presents recent advancements in physicists’ research on cancer. The work presented in this volume uses a variety of physical, biochemical, mathematical, theoretical, and computational techniques to gain a deeper molecular and cellular understanding of the horrific disease that is cancer.
Mars has been extensively photographed by cameras and compositionally detected by spectrometers onboard orbiters on a global scale, and explored in-situ by landers and rovers at both local and outcrop scales in different locations. The results have proved that the Martian surface is rich in Earth-like geomorphologies, and the study of terrestrial analogs to Mars has been listed as one of the highest priorities of Martian science. With increasing new discoveries by in-situ explorations, Mars exploration has begun to enter the era of focusing on detailed analyses at regional to outcrop levels, rather than global mapping. Analog studies are playing a crucial role in this transition, making this book, which introduces the methodology and provides cases for readers, essentially important. This book contains first-hand information and on-site images obtained by the work’s contributing authors, and is an essential read for anyone interested in Martian geomorphology and its evolution processes and history.

The Evolution of Our Sensor of Society by Irving C Statler (NASA Ames Research Center, USA)
Biomimetic Oral Appliance Therapy for Pediatric and Adult Sleep Disordered Breathing
This book is about the evolution of human consciousness, but the evolutionary path that the author describes is not precisely in accordance with Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection of biological adaptation mechanisms. A biological adaptation entails the accumulation of a progression of genetic changes in multiple systems before the next step in an evolution of life forms. The likelihood of all the required random mutations occurring simultaneously in all the systems is infinitesimally small, so something else had to have influenced the evolutionary process. The author maintains that there is more to evolution than the traditional Darwinian concept of natural selection of random genetic mutations. The author describes a broadened version of Darwin’s concept of evolution supported by recent research, that says, ‘learning’ brought intelligent design to the evolution of both biological and behavioral adaptations.

The ACL or anterior cruciate ligament is the most important ligament in the knee. When it is completely torn, it can lead to instability or buckling of the knee. There are several options to choose from when selecting a graft for ACL reconstruction such as using autografts including patellar tendon, hamstring tendon, and quadriceps tendon, and allografts (also known as donor tissue or cadaver tissue). Artificial ligaments are also discussed since they are still used in Europe and Asia. This book summarizes the pros and cons of each graft option in detail.

LIVING THE CORPORATE PURPOSE
A Critical History of the Pharmaceutical Industry, 1880 – 2020
Insights from Companies in Asia by Mark Chong & Flocy Joseph (Singapore Management University, Singapore)
BOOKS
by Graham Dutfield (University of Leeds, UK) This book is a history of medicines and the commercial actors that make and sell them, covering the 140 years since the modern pharmaceutical industry came into being. It is written in a lively and accessible way, aiming at a general audience that combines historical narrative with fascinating case studies on drug discovery and commercialization, from the rat poison that became warfarin, to a cardiovascular treatment that was turned into Viagra. In a non-partisan way it also examines some of the less noble manifestations of corporate behavior, concluding with an agenda for reform.
Corporate purpose has become a global phenomenon in recent years. Increasingly, businesses are expected to “produce profitable solutions to the problems of people and planet, and not to profit from producing problems for people or planet” (World Economic Forum). However, the literature on how companies can build purpose into their corporate DNA is still very nascent. This book, first of its kind, focuses on how companies in Asia are building purpose into their journey. It contains case studies of companies and their current journey to become more purpose driven, why they do it, and how they did it.

T h e COV I D - 1 9 e r a has shown us that the future of work is here. More projects and fewer budgets mean that selecting the right person for the right project is imperative to success. Companies — from large MNCs to SMEs — have less wiggle room than ever before. We believe creative freelancers will play a pivotal role in helping large corporations, SMEs, or start-up companies to manage their internal resources and enable the use of exceptional projectbased talent that would otherwise not be economically feasible to bring on board. Most importantly, during times of uncertain market conditions, they enable businesses to maximise performance across peaks and troughs in demand. This book aims to bring about more awareness of the lesser known profession called “freelancing” and generate the next wave of “Future Leaders” with entrepreneurial and self-employed mindsets.

The Collective Governance of New Ideas by Darcy W E Allen (RMIT University, Australia)
BOOKS
This book challenges our understanding of how entrepreneurs crystallize opportunities surrounding new technologies. While innovation is the fundamental driver of growth and prosperity, how the earliest stages of entrepreneurship are governed remains elusive. This book creates a new, institutional approach to understanding entrepreneurship before emphasizing how entrepreneurs create governance structures to coordinate new knowledge resources.

GLOBALIZATION AND SUSTAINABILITY IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA The Impact of the West and China by Lynne Ciochetto (Massey University, New Zealand) This timely book provides a comprehensive historical overview of the issues and challenges of contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa. An interdisciplinary perspective is driven by an emphasis on development issues and the four pillars of sustainability: social, cultural, economic and environmental. An audit approach is used to evaluate the experiences of Sub-Saharan Africa since the mercantile and colonial eras through the era of independence and development, the structural adjustment decades and the contemporary resource boom. Stimulated by an abundance of reports in the media criticizing China’s presence in Sub-Saharan Africa, a comparison is made between China’s 50 years of involvement in the region and the 500 years of Western colonialism.
Rather than the conventional view that entrepreneurship happens inside firms, this unique transaction-cost economics analysis of entrepreneurship suggests it might begin earlier in hybrid, polycentric self-governance structures, including the innovation commons. Allen explores and analyses various examples of these structures, including hackerspaces and the institutions coalescing around the development of the blockchain economy, along with the dynamics of how those institutions might collapse into firms. This new understanding of the entrepreneurial governance problem is also connected to contemporary questions about the purpose, scope, and application of innovation policy.
Globalization and Sustainability in SubSaharan Africa is an important reference for academics, researchers and students. It is also written in an accessible style that is suitable for the general reader. Contents: Theories of Development; Mercantilism and Colonialism; The Development Decades; Sub-Saharan Africa since 2000; The West since 1945; China since the 1950s; the West and China in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Contents: Governing Entrepreneurial Discovery; The Early Stage Entrepreneurial Problem; Beyond Entrepreneurial Firms and Markets; The Private Governance of Hackerspaces; Developing the Blockchain Cryptoeconomy; Rethinking Innovation Policy; Conclusion.
Readership: Academics, researchers, students and general readers interested in the history of contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa.

As a practical step-by-step guide for firms, the book presents a comprehensive framework for pricing decisions. The framework illustrates how firms’ pricing decisions are shaped by customer valuation of the product or service, firm cost, and competition within the category. Additional considerations include: channel arrangements, legal and regulatory limits, public sentiments, and the overriding strategy for the firm. Short cases and numerical examples help illustrate how these factors can be incorporated in firm making decisions.

CONCEPTUAL ECONOMICS The Liaising Role in Politics and Social Sciences
BOOKS
by Kui Wai Li (The Kui-Wai consultancy for Economic Development, Canada) Given that there is no shortage of economic theories while economic problems are growing periodically, Conceptual Economics boldly attempts to initiate a new approach by employing conceptual and intuitive tools to examine the intra-relationship between microeconomics and macroeconomics as well as the inter-relationship between economic analysis and other social science studies, especially the relationship with political science. The few intuitive ideas include the separation between ex-ante situations and ex-post outcomes, the difference between endowment differences and unequal outcomes, and the role of economics as a vehicle in the delivery of numerous social and political activities. The discussion extends to cover an analysis on human values and concludes with a recommendation on the functionality of civic capitalism. With intuition and analytical reasoning within economics and with other social sciences, Conceptual Economics can become a new branch in economic study where scholars, analysts and intellectuals could “think outside the box” by liaising a wider economic perspective and/or amalgamating non-economic aspects into their analysis. This shall provide a new dimension to solving human economic problems and possibly area of intellectuality. Featured Contents: The Making of Conceptual Economics: The Ingredients in Economics; The Liaison Role of Economics; The Extensity Dimension: The Intra-Connectedness among Economic Theories; The Intensity Dimension: Measurement of Values in Humanity Sciences; and others. Readership: Senior year undergraduate, post-graduate and research degree students. THE CME VULNERABILITY The Impact of Negative Oil Futures Trading
High Returns and Low Risk
edited by George Xianzhi Yuan (Sun Yat-sen University, China & Soochow University, China & Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance, China)
by Rajiv Aggarwal (Pictet, Singapore) Equities are generally perceived to be more vo l a t i l e t h a n f i xe d income investments. Many risk averse investors are unable to digest the daily ups and downs in the prices of equities. They also feel that, from a historical perspective, equities are overpriced and thus are not comfortable taking equity positions at current valuations.
The scope of this book is limited to covering the impact of the negative oil futures derivatives’ trading between April 20 and 21, 2020. This book focuses on exploring the issues, challenges, and possible impacts on global financial markets due to the negative clearing prices of WTI Oil futures contracts and related problems from different perspectives. Topics covered include the responsibilities and liabilities of the CME; critique to the fundamental theory of economics and the modern understanding of value and labor; and challenges to the global financial systems and businesses and introduction to new methods of application.
On the other hand, global interest rates have been on a decline from the 1970s when inflation was finally under control by central banks. This decline in interest rates means that investors have to live with lower nominal returns. Since the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, many investors have been feeling left out of the equity markets. Fixed Coupon Notes (FCNs) are quasi-equity and quasi-bond structures which aim to provide higher returns than bonds with lower risks compared to equities. Moreover, they also provide an avenue to enter equities at reasonable prices and acceptable valuations. Being the most popular structured product in Asia, there is sufficient institutional experience about the product. This book aims to provide the basics as well as the nuances of investing in FCNs so that an investor not only understands the concepts behind the product, but is also able to avoid common pitfalls.
Featured Contents: The Fundamental Challenge Caused by CME’s Negative Trading Price for WTI Oil Future (George Yuan); The CME Vulnerability: The Best Practice and the Impact of Negative Oil Futures Trading Price: The Overview of WTI Crude Oil Futures’ Epic Fall (Chern Lu); Why Oil Prices Plunged and Settled Negative: Why Oil Prices Plunged and Settled Negative: A Game-Theoretical Perspective (Chenghu Ma and Xianzhen Wang); To Meet the Challenge with Negative Price and Management in Practice: The Challenges of Negative Oil Future Price Posed to Risk Managers and Quants (Michael Peng); and others.

Right-wing violence is Textbook undergoing a revival on both sides of the Atlantic. In Europe, much of this violence has been a backlash against migrants and their offspring carried out by ‘lone-wolves’ and organized groups. In the United States, r a c e , g e n d e r, a n d religious hatreds have triggered far more than ‘normal’ levels of violence, including a resurgence of attacks on Jews and other anti-Semitic behavior. Examining the contours of the current violence, this book traces the development of the right-wing in the decades following the end of World War II.
B r ya n C h e a n g a n d Donovan Choy break this traditional proPAP versus anti-PAP dichotomy by providing a fresh classical liberal perspective. The authors contend that both sides discern only parts of the political puzzle correctly. This book envisions a new path forward for Singapore’s policymaking, one characterised by greater competition & freedom. It critiques the conservative-right through a fresh take on the philosophical underpinnings of the “Singapore Consensus”: communitarianism, meritocracy and technocracy. The authors also engage with the new social democratic orthodoxy, demonstrating the dangers of egalitarian interventions & state-based environmentalism. Applying the interdisciplinary insights of political philosophy and political economy, this novel account recommends epistemic liberalism, a system of governance based on intellectual humility, limited government, and decentralisation. Featured Contents: Foreword by Professor Razeen Sally; Classical Liberalism as a New Third Way; Asian Values and Classical Liberalism; Meritocracy and Elitism in Singapore: What Both Sides Get Wrong About the Debate on Meritocracy; Singapore’s Technocratic Paternalism and How Behavioural Economics Justifies More of the Same; and others. DECIPHERING CHINA’S MICROCHIP INDUSTRY
A Decade of Perspectives edited by Alistair D B Cook & Tamara Nair (S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore)
by Fang Chen, Ruifeng Dong
The ban on sales of ZTE, imposed by the US, made China feel the weight of a small chip. The ban is termed as a trade war. What is the truth behind this trade friction? Why did the Chinese microchip industr y encounter such a predicament? What is the future of the microchip industry in China? This book tried to answer these questions, uncovers the secrets of China’s microchip industry, and traces its development. It looks at bridging the gap between the chip technology and public perception, and predicts how China can make a breakthrough in this industry. The book takes a “macro-history view” to describe the race among superpowers in the microchip industry and records people’s constant explorations into the industry in the past six decades. It also compares the microchip industry in China to that of United States, Japan, and South Korea.

CHINA’S INDUSTRIAL POLICY TRANSFORMATION
THE CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY IN TRANSFORMATION The Crisis of Identity and Possibility for Renewal
Theory and Practice by Hanquan Huang (National Development and Reform Commission, China)
edited by Lance L P Gore (East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore, Singapore)
BOOKS
The debate on industrial policy has been in full swing among the academic circles in the recent years. The crux of this debate is not whether China needs industrial policies, but rather, the kind of industrial policies it wants. Given the profound changes to the domestic and international environments, and institutional background during China’s industrial development, industrial policies must be able to make up for “market failures, “ while avoiding “government failures”. To this end, it is suggested to establish a “market-friendly” industrial policy system dominated by functional industrial policies, in accordance with the requirements of building an “interactive and cooperative” government-market relationship to help transform and upgrade China’s industries.
The book is part of the recent effort to catch up with the research on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Despite its omnipresence and pivotal role in running the country, there has been a conspicuous shortage of references to the Party in most studies related to China. In its stead, the academic literature as well as popular discussions has too often treated the CCP as a type of regime destined to the dustbin of history. The inadequacy of research in this area is understandable because CCP is a tightly organised Leninist party which has kept much of its internal affairs confidential. This book examines the key aspects of the transformation of CCP in the rapidly changing national and global context. It highlights the problems faced by the ruling Leninist party in adapting to a capitalistic environment that its organisations cannot fully control and its ideology cannot effectively rationalise.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF DEMOCRACY
Textbook CHINESE CULTURE
China’s Theory, Strategy and Agenda
Its Humanity and Modernity
by Shangli Lin (Fudan University, China)
by Suoqiao Qian (Newcastle University, UK)
The book expounds on the role played by democracy in China’s revolution and modernization led by the Communist Party of China (CPC), and how the CPC, in both its party building and state building, has constantly sought to leverage democracy’s positive functions while avoiding its shortcomings.
This book offers a critical overview of Chinese culture intended for college students as well as for general readers interested in the topic. While ‘Chinese culture’ is often deployed in terms of kung fu, Confucius or calligraphy, this book refers to the traditional and modern experiences out of which contemporary Chinese people have grown. Internationally renowned scholar in China Studies, Professor Qian Suoqiao invites readers to join him on an exciting intellectual journey to critically explore important issues including history, language, governmentality, self-cultivation, aesthetics of life, nationalism, cosmopolitanism, communism, the rise of China and her soft power which contribute to the formation of what we call ‘Chinese’.
Special attention is paid to reconstructing and explaining the historical contexts from which the Party’s theoretical innovations have emerged, thus offering readers insights into the inner political logic that has shaped China’s development. The author, a member of the Party’s senior policy panel, offers a perceptive analysis of the modernization of the country and its governing capacity, and provides a clear assessment of how democracy in China has developed with the times. Featured Contents: Political Logic of Democracy Construction; Construct Democracy from Theory; Build Chinese Democracy with People as the Center; State and Society Construct Party System Together; Socialism and State Building; Effective Governance and Big Country Growth; Accumulate Legitimacy in Validity; State Response to Democratization; Party Institutions and China’s Democracy; Operation of Democratic Centralism; Consultative Politics and China’s Polity; From Consultative Politics to a Harmonious Society; and others.

by Guoping Xie
The History of Pudong Development Translated by: Li Zhang Pudong is a district located at east of the Huangpu River and is opposite to Puxi, west of the Huangpu River and the historic city center of Shanghai. by Xiaobo Wu (Zhejiang University, China) Innovation studies have long been confined to the theoretical system e s t a b l i s h e d by t h e scholars of developed countries in the West. It is difficult to use these studies to understand the real nature and law of technological innovation in developing countries. This book, in an innovative manner, studies the theoretical system of secondary innovation, and reveals the evolution law and dynamic innovation mode of the activities carried out by technologically backward countries. It does so by laying an important foundation for the development of management science theory on the basis of the standpoint and characteristics of developing countries.

BOOKS
This book proposes that the short-term goal of the current reform of the international monetary system should be a combination of controlling “imbalances” and “the risk of the dollar”, namely using the balance of payments coordination mechanism to suppress risks by exchange rate cooperation. The reforms of international reserve currencies, international financial institutions, and international financial regulation provide a good external environment for the stable development of the world economy. The book discusses the mechanisms that will continue to support the hegemony of the US dollar and the US dollar system in the future, including the commodity dollar return mechanism, the international debt repayment mechanism, the petroleum dollar pricing mechanism and the dollar rescue mechanism in financial crisis.

This volume suggests that central banks will most likely issue digital currencies. There are many positive considerations. A central bank digital currency can generate useful information for the monetary authority, can enhance the effectiveness and flexibility of monetary policy, and may raise financial inclusion. Central bank digital currency, however, can have a significant impact on the banking and financial sector and could change a central bank’s role in the economy.
ECEI 2020 provides a unified communication platform for researchers in a range of topics in education innovation and other related fields.
