Volume 4: Drilling and Reservoir Appraisal by Olivier Allain (KAPPA, France), Michael Dyson (Striatum Ltd, UK), Xudong Jing (Shell, Netherlands), Christopher Pentland (Petroleum Development Oman, Oman), Marcel Polikar (Independent Consultant, Canada) & Vural Sander Suicmez (Maersk Oil & Gas, Denmark)

This book covers the fundamentals of drilling and reservoir appraisal for petroleum. Split into three sections, the first looks at the basic principles of well engineering in terms of planning, design and construction. It then goes on to describe well safety, costs and operations management. The second section is focussed on drilling and core analysis, and the laboratory measurement of the physico-chemical properties of samples. It is clear that efficient development of hydrocarbon reservoirs is highly dependent on understanding these key properties, and the data can only be gathered through a carefully conducted core-analysis program, as described. Finally, in the third section we look at production logging, an essential part of reservoir appraisal, which describes the nature and the behaviour of fluids in or around the borehole. It describes how to know, at a given time, phase by phase, and zone by zone, how much fluid is coming out of or going into the formation. by Erik Steur (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium), Toshiki Oguchi (Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan) & Henk Nijmeijer (Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands)

by Robert W Zimmerman (Imperial College London, UK)

This book presents, in a self-contained form, the equations of fluid flow in porous media, with a focus on topics and issues that are relevant to petroleum reservoir engineering. No prior knowledge of the field is assumed on the part of the reader, and particular care is given to careful mathematical and conceptual development of the governing equations, and solutions for important reservoir flow problems. Fluid Flow in Porous Media starts with a discussion of permeability and Darcy’s law, then moves on to a careful derivation of the pressure diffusion equation. Solutions are developed and discussed for flow to a vertical well in an infinite reservoir, in reservoirs containing faults, in bounded reservoirs, and to hydraulically fractured wells. Special topics such as the dual-porosity model for fractured reservoirs, and fluid flow in gas reservoirs, are also covered. The book includes twenty problems, along with detailed solutions. Readership: Undergraduate and postgraduate students of petroleum engineering or hydrology. £69

Key Features: ○ The first book to deal systematically with synchronization for networks with time-delayed diffusive coupling. The topic is of great practical relevance, but so far, few systematic procedures are available ○ The authors have leading positions in the study and understanding of synchronization, having extensively published on this subject ○ The text is unique in unifying most of the approaches on the topic so far Readership: Graduate students, researchers and academics interested in complex systems and control theory. 250pp 978-981-4569-80-4

ADVANCED CONTINUUM THEORIES AND FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSES

by James D Lee (The George Washington University, USA) & Jiaoyan Li (Idaho National Laboratory, USA) This comprehensive volume presents a unified approach to continuum theories, showing microcontinuum theories (including micromorphic theory and micropolar theory) are natural extension of classical continuum mechanics, and classical continuum mechanics is a special case of microcontinuum theories. The kinematics and basic laws are rigorously derived. Based on axiomatic approach, constitutive theory is systematically derived for various kinds of materials, ranging from Stokesian fluid to thermos-visco-elastic-plastic solid. The material force and the electromagnetic interactions are introduced and discussed. Moreover, general finite element methods for large-strain thermomechanical coupling physical phenomena are rigorously formulated. Relevant numerical methods are included. Stability and Structures NANOPARTICLE REINFORCED COMPOSITES FOR STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS

by Hassan Mahfuzn (Florida Atlantic University, USA) & Vinod Dhanak (The University of Liverpool, UK)

Traditionally the subject of nanomaterials and nanoscience belonged to physicists and chemists over the last several decades since the legendary lecture given by Nobel laureate Richard P Feynman (Physics) in 1959, “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom”. However, the idea of nanoparticle reinforced composites or nanocomposites came only about a decade ago after the remarkable discovery of carbon nanotubes and buckyballs. Infusion of these nanoparticles into various polymer matrices and their precursors opened up an important area of research in enhancing the properties of composite materials as we know today. ELEMENTARY MECHANICS (In 2 Volumes))

by John G Papastavridis (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA) This is a comprehensive and state-of-the-art compendium of NewtonianEulerian (momentum/vectorial) mechanics, from an advanced and unified (i.e. continuum) viewpoint — “elementary” simply means no Lagrangean and no Hamiltonian theories / methods, otherwise the level is graduate and beyond; yet, the presentation is eminently readable and inclusive: the style is informal and the mathematics (this Achilles heel of modern mechanics books, especially of the applied/multi-body ones) has been kept to the simplest necessary for a work of this level and scope.

by Liang Zhong (National Heart Centre Singapore, Singapore), Ru San Tan (National Heart Centre Singapore, Singapore), Eddie Yin Kwee Ng (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) & Dhanjoo N Ghista (University 2020 Foundation, USA) This book has literally transformed Cardiovascular Physiology into a STEM discipline, involving (i) quantitative formulations of heart anatomy and physiology, (ii) technologies for imaging the heart and blood vessels, (iii) coronary stenosis hemodynamics measure by means of fractional flow reserve and intervention by grafting and stenting, (iv) fluid mechanics and computational analysis of blood flow in the heart, aorta and coronary arteries, and (v) design of heart valves, percutaneous valve stents, and ventricular assist devices. Readership: The book will attract a wide range of readers: academics, biomedical engineers, cardiologists, students, researchers, employees of funding agencies such as the National Institute for Health (NIH). 456pp 978-981-3270-63-3
