Welcome to this very special issue of My Kempinski Experience. As well as bringing you our latest news and featured destinations as usual, it also celebrates our 120th anniversary. We have many events lined-up to mark this important milestone in our history and I hope you’ll be able to join us for some of them. We can trace our beginnings back to a small wine store and delicatessen in Berlin, called M. Kempinski & Co. - opened by our founder, Berthold Kempinski. From here Berthold went on introduce his guests to new gastronomic experiences in surroundings that were always distinctive and individual. You can read about our history and take a look at some of our most significant achievements on page 32. And if you’d like to find out more, visit our anniversary website at kempinski.com/120 Of course we are proud to be Europe’s oldest luxury hotel group, and to have our prestigious European legacy. But while we are influenced by our past we are always looking to the future. We are constantly developing innovative new concepts and embracing the latest technology to make sure you enjoy the services and facilities you expect from a 21st century hotel. Our latest hotel opening is an excellent example of how we respect the past while creating something new and exciting. Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana is located in Old Havana – a UNESCO World Heritage site - and is Cuba’s first modern luxury five-star hotel. Our restoration has brought one of Havana’s most legendary buildings back to life. Dating from the beginning of the 20th century, the Manzana de Gomez building was Cuba’s first European-style shopping arcade. Discover more about its fascinating history and read how we have transformed it into a luxurious hotel, imbued with Kempinski style and service, on page 23. I hope you’ll be able to join in our 120th anniversary celebrations in at least one of our destinations around the world. MARKUS SEMER CHAIRMAN OF THE MANAGEMENT BOARD & CEO

which quickly attracted a loyal and regular clientele. The Kempinskis delighted their guests by serving oysters, lobster, crayfish, and caviar along with wine. It was the beginning of a small culinary revolution as it led to a new concept: affordable fix-priced full and half portions, accompanied by wine by the glass. This entrepreneurial approach to hospitality remains at the heart of Kempinski as we constantly seek out new culinary experiences to please and surprise our guests.

Egypt has a long tradition of engineering excellence, and its relationship with the sun goes back to ancient times when the pharaohs worshipped the sun god, Ra. So it was fitting that Kempinski Hotel Soma Bay should echo those skilful ancient Egyptian workers who built the Pharaoh’s Solar Ship, by welcoming the world’s elite solar cars in the 2017 Somabay Egyptian Solar Challenge.

BE Health Association BE Health is a non-profit association that aims to make health contagious by building bridges between the workplace and local communities, and empowering high-risk populations to reduce the incidence of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Infectious diseases see no border, social class, age or ethnicity. However, they affect people who are among the most vulnerable. As people are at the centre of Kempinski’s business model, we made a firm commitment to actively contribute to spread health and bring positive and tangible change in the lives of people living everyday with this burden. As a founding member of the association, Kempinski supports BE Health’s activities to give communities the knowledge they need to protect themselves against these diseases and help those who need assistance.
Spreading health to build stronger foundations for future generations. “Spread health” by facilitating prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, in particular HIV/ Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, together with BE, an independent non-profit health association established in Switzerland. www.behealth.com — Contact: info@behealth.com
