The University

Coastal Carolina University

Coastal Carolina University is a dynamic, public, comprehensive liberal arts institution located in Conway, just minutes from Myrtle Beach, S.C. The University offers baccalaureate programs to nearly 8,300 students in 40 fields of study including acclaimed programs in marine science, resort tourism and professional golf management.

Graduate programs include an MBA as well as master’s degrees in education and coastal marine and wetland studies. The University prides itself on the interaction of students and faculty in the classroom, through internships and hands-on research. The combined expertise of faculty ranges from emerging market economics to global positioning systems, bottle-nosed dolphins and the history of rock ‘n’ roll. The Campus The campus comprises 53 main buildings on 307 acres including the Burroughs & Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies and the Coastal Science Center, located on the East Campus at the Atlantic Center on U.S. 501. The University also offers courses at the Waccamaw Center for Higher Education in Litchfield, and in Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown.

Waties Island, 1,062 acres of pristine barrier island on the Atlantic coast, provides a natural laboratory for extensive study in marine science and wetlands biology. Students enrolled in Coastal’s Professional Golf Management program staff Quail Creek Golf Club at Coastal Carolina University, a public 18-hole golf facility located adjacent to the campus.

President David A. DeCenzo

Coastal Carolina University Executive Officers

David A. DeCenzo became the second president of Coastal Carolina University on May 7, 2007.

DeCenzo joined Coastal Carolina’s administration in 2002 when he was named dean of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration. He was named provost and senior vice president of academic affairs n in May 2006. Before joining the Coastal Carolina University faculty, DeCenzo served as director of partnership development in the College of Business and Economics at Towson University in Maryland from 1999 to 2002. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Maryland College Park and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from West Virginia University.

An experienced industry consultant, DeCenzo has served a wide variety of clients including Citicorp Global Technology, Moen Inc., Motorola and others. His major academic interests are in human resource management, management, and organizational behavior. He is the author of textbooks that are used widely at colleges and universities throughout the United States and the world. He serves on the board of directors of the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Center, and he served a two-year term on the Conway Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors.

As dean of Coastal Carolina’s Wall College, DeCenzo led the move to establish a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

He also helped create the Wall Center of Excellence, designed to enhance and reinforce business students’ skills through experiential learning. As provost, he instituted Centers for Excellence to support student internships, research and travel in each of the university’s four colleges.

DeCenzo and his wife, Terri, have four children.

the following year, though, and the group returned to Hispaniola.

In the next three centuries, the region’s population grew, but slowly. Landowners gradually developed large plantations in the area, with rice as the principal crop. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, people began to “vacation” here, although it was quite rustic. Houses and camps were sparse, and there were few permanent residents at the turn of the century. But, drawn by the ocean, sand and trees, people began to call Myrtle Beach “home” as the 1900s progressed.

Today, Myrtle Beach is a well known destination for vacationers from around the country, Canada and abroad.

According to the 2000 Census, the city is at the center of the 13th fastest growing metropolitan area in the U.S. It is also one of the golf capitals of the world, boasting over 100 golf courses within a 40-mile radius.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

The City of Myrtle Beach is in the center of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile crescent of beach on the South Carolina coast. In the last 25 years, Myrtle Beach has developed into the premier resort destination on the East Coast. Our 25,000 permanent residents welcome millions of visitors each year to this full-service resort community. Guests come to enjoy the wide beaches, the Atlantic Ocean, and an incredible range of activities and entertainment.

Myrtle Beach was incorporated as a town in 1938 and became a city in 1957. Its name comes from the wax myrtle, a shrub which grows abundantly in the area.

History records that a party of Spaniards from Hispaniola landed about 50 miles north of present-day Myrtle Beach in 1526 and eventually established the first European settlement in the U.S. about 30 miles to the south. The settlement, San Miguel de Cauldape, was abandoned

Warren D. “Moose” Koegel is starting his ninth year as the Director of Athletics at Coastal Carolina University. Koegel, the Chanticleers’ fifth Athletic Director since 1986, was appointed on October 6, 2000.

In Koegel’s years at the helm of the Coastal Carolina Athletic Department, the Chanticleers have flourished both on and off the fields of play. In his tenure to date, Coastal Carolina has been represented in NCAA Championships in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, baseball, women’s indoor track and field, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. The Chanticleers also have won the prestigious George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup five times, including their fourth consecutive award in 2006-07, awarded annually to the top athletic department in the Big South Conference. In addition to the work in their sport, Coastal Carolina’s almost 400 student-athletes combined for almost a 3.0 grade point average during the 2007-08 academic year. For his efforts, Koegel was named the 2008 NACDA Southeast Region Division I FCS Athletic Director of the Year.

Coastal Carolina’s 17 current NCAA Division I sports continue to flourish, including the most recent addition to the Chanticleers’ athletic department — football. Football, which kicked off with the 2003 season and won its first Big South championship in 2004 in just its second year of play, competes at the NCAA Division I-Football Championship Subdivision level. Coastal Carolina completed construction on a 6,408-seat state-of-the-art stadium in 2003, which expanded by almost 1,000 seats for the 2006 season. A new athletic facility which will house the football program, as well as other parts of the department, is also slated for the near future. The new athletic facility will include an expanded weight room, training room, team meeting rooms, locker rooms for football, offices for all football coaches and staff, and several conference rooms. The facility will also become the new home for the Coastal Carolina University Buddy Sasser Athletic Hall of Fame.

Koegel came to Coastal Carolina from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he had served as an associate athletic director from 1998-2000. At Chattanooga, Koegel helped manage a $5.2 million budget for 16 NCAA Division I sports. His other administrative responsibilities included business operations, athletic scholarships, marketing and serving as the liaison to the coaching staff. He also served on the steering committee for the NCAA I-AA National Championship Football Game.

Prior to his stint at Chattanooga, he had served on the football coaching staffs at the University of Connecticut, Rutgers University and the University of Wyoming.

During his tenure on the football coaching staff at the University of Connecticut from 1992 to 1997, he was recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach as well as interim head coach in 1993. Koegel was an assistant football coach at Rutgers University from 1984 to 1990 and Wyoming University from 1977 to 1983.

Koegel played in the National Football League from 1971 to 1976, spending time with the Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Cardinals and New York Jets. He starred at Penn State University under legendary football coach Joe Paterno. He was co-captain of the Nittany Lions his senior season and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1971. During his college career, he was a Third Team All-American as a senior and played on two Orange Bowl champion teams. He also played in the Hula Bowl, East-West Shrine Game and the College All-State Game. Koegel received Penn State’s Dedicated Player and Outstanding Senior Awards.

Koegel and his wife Elaine have one daughter, Kathryn.

What is the Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse?

If you intend to participate in Division I athletics as a freshman, you must register with and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. Your high school counselor should provide you with the student-release form and a red brochure titled, “Making Sure You Are Eligible to Participate in College Sports.”

What does the Clearinghouse need to certify me?

After graduation and before school closes for the summer, your high school must send the Clearinghouse a copy of your final transcript that confirms graduation from high school.

You must also have your ACT or SAT scores sent to the Clearinghouse.

How do I have my test scores sent to the Clearinghouse?

Test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. You can accomplish this by marking code 9999 as one of the institutions to receive your scores, or submit a request for an “Additional Score Report” to the appropriate testing agency.

What is the Amateurism Clearinghouse?

Beginning in the Fall of 2006, all prospects planning to enter a Division I or II collegiate institution for the first time by the Fall of 2007 must also be certified by the NCAA Amateurism Clearinghouse. NCAA President Myles Brand authorized the creation of this branch in response to the NCAA membership’s concerns about amateurism issues related to international and domestic prospective and transfer student-athletes (prospects).

How do I register with these entities?

To register with the Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse, complete the Student Release Form and mail the top (white) copy of the form to the Clearinghouse along with the required registration fee or register online at www.NCAAClearinghouse.net. You should apply for certification after your junior year in high school if you are sure that you wish to participate in intercollegiate athletics as a freshman at a Division I or II institution. If you fail to submit all required documents, your incomplete file will be discarded after three years, requiring you to register again.

Your registration fee will cover certification of initial eligibility and amateur status. The Amateurism Clearinghouse operates through online registration only and is also located at www.NCAAClearinghouse.net. All prospects will be required to complete a questionnaire about their athletics participation prior to full-time collegiate enrollment at a Division I or Division II institution. Prospects will not be permitted to participate in intercollegiate competition until initial eligibility and amateurism certifications are completed.

16 Core-Course Rule For prospective student-athletes first entering a collegiate institution, you must meet the 16 core- course rule. The core requirements are: • 4 years of English • 3 years of Mathematics (Algebra I or higher) • 2 years of Natural/Physical Science (One year of lab if offered by high school) • 1 year of additional English, Math or Natural/Physical Science • 2 years of Social Science • 4 years of additional courses (from any of area above, foreign language or nondoctrinal religion/philosophy) Effective August 1, 2008, you must meet a 16-core course requirement.

Who can call me on the telephone? When? How often?

Faculty members and coaches are permitted to call you once during the month of March of your junior year (all sports other than football). Football may call you once during the month of May of your junior year. Additional calls may be made after July 1 of your junior year (all sports other than football and basketball), June 21 for basketball and September 1 for football. After that date, a coach or faculty member can call you or your parents or legal guardian once a week. Boosters are not permitted to call.

In sports other than football, it is permissible to make one in-person, off-campus recruiting contact with you during the month of April of your junior year, then again once per week after July 1 during a contact period, limited to three. Football is permitted to do so beginning September 1 and is limited to six during a contact period.

When are coaches or faculty members allowed unlimited calls to me?

At the following times: During the five days immediately before your official visit to that university; on the day of a coach’s off-campus contact with you; during the time beginning with the initial National Letter of Intent (NLI) signing date in your sport through the two days after the signing date.

Can I call coaches collect or toll free? When?

Yes. You may call coaches or universities collect or use a toll-free (1 800) number. They may receive calls on or after July 1 after you complete your junior year of high school.

When do I become a prospective student-athlete?

When you start ninth-grade classes. Before the ninth grade, you become a prospective student-athlete if a college gives you (or your relatives or friends) any financial aid or other benefits that the college does not provide to all prospective students.

When is a college considered to be recruiting me?

If any coach or representative of the college’s athletics interests approaches you (or any member of your family) about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college.

Who can recruit me?

Only university coaches and staff. Alumni and friends of the university are NOT permitted to contact prospective student-athletes in any way.

From whom can I receive letters? Beginning when?

Coaches, faculty members and students (but not boosters) can send you letters, starting September 1 of your junior year in high school. (at the conclusion of sophomore year for men’s basketball).

What can a university send me?

A Division I institution may provide you with the following material: general correspondence, including letters, U.S. Postal Service postcards and institutional note cards, and materials printed on plain white paper with black ink; business cards; e-mail and instant messages; NCAA educational information; pre-enrollment information subsequent to signing a National Letter of Intent with the university; one athletic publication (media guide or recruiting guide) which may include only one color printing inside; schedule cards.

Can they send me anything prior to my junior year?

Only questionnaires and summer camp brochures.

Can any other materials be mailed to me?

No. Game programs, which may not include posters, can be provided only during official or unofficial visits to the school’s campus. The same restrictions apply to student-athlete handbooks.

SUMMER JOBS Can a university I have signed with help me get a summer job? Beginning when?

After you sign a National Letter of Intent, the school you signed with may arrange summer employment for you. That employment may begin AFTER you graduate from high school.

Are there payment regulations for summer employment?

Yes, all earnings from summer employment must be at a rate of pay that is comparable with the going rate for that type of work performed. You should be paid by check for hours actually worked.

Can I accept transportation from my employer?

Transportation cannot be provided unless transportation is provided to all employees.

An employer cannot provide you with any benefit or privileges that are not provided to all employees.

Can I be paid for teaching or coaching sport skills?

You cannot be paid for teaching or coaching sport skills in your sport on a fee per lesson basis. However, you can be employed by a community agency or club to teach sport skills as long as you have other duties or responsibilities.

ANY QUESTIONS?

OFFICIAL VISITS How many official visits am I allowed to take? Beginning when?

Each prospective student-athlete is limited to five official visits which may be taken following the opening day of classes of your senior year of high school.

What must the school have from me before I take an official visit?

The recruiting institution must already have a high school or a college transcript and ACT or SAT test scores on file.

You may visit an institution’s campus at your own expense an unlimited number of times before your senior year of high school and continuing in your senior year. This is an unofficial visit.

What can the school give me when I go on an unofficial visit?

A maximum of three complimentary admissions to a campus athletic event in which that school’s team is competing, issued through a pass list only. Such complimentary admissions are for the exclusive use of the prospect and those persons accompanying him on the visit.

They can be issued only on an individual game basis.

The Big South Conference is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2008-09, a milestone coming on the heels of unprecedented achievements and unparalleled success in League history over the past few years. Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete.

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell University, Coastal Carolina (then USC-Coastal Carolina) and Winthrop. One month later, Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf.

The League received its first automatic bid in 1990 to the NCAA Baseball Championship. In 1989,

Under Sasser’s leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, close to 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship three times, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the national team and individual scoring leader in men’s basketball twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event.

In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina).

In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last four years, while its playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 12 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has

been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has

enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first longrange strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 500 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of a Conference blog and an online merchandise store.

The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference studentathletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 gradepoint average, and the League has had more than 90 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

GEORGE F. “BUDDY” SASSER CUP Coastal Carolina University won the prestigious George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup for a record-setting ninth time in 2006-07.

The Sasser Cup, named for the former Coastal Carolina Athletic Director and Big South Commissioner, honors the top overall athletic department in the Big South Conference. The award is based on a point system, with points being awarded based upon each school’s finish in each of the 18 league-sponsored sports.

The Chanticleers’ nine Sasser Cup awards are the most earned by one school in Big South history.

Coastal won the 2006-07 award by capturing Big South titles in football, women’s indoor track, men’s golf, women’s tennis (tournament) and baseball (regular-season and tournament). In addition to the Big South honors, Coastal Carolina was represented in six different NCAA Championships.

FROM I-95 From the South, take Highway 327 exit to SC Hwy. 76/301 Turn left onto Hwy. 76/301. This will become Hwy. 576 and then Hwy. 501. After passing through Conway, turn right at the second stop light (approx. 2 miles) into the entrance of Coastal Carolina University. You are now on College Road.

Kimbel Arena (basketball/volleyball), Charles L. Watson Baseball Stadium, and the Football/Soccer Stadium are visible on the right from College Road.

To get to the Softball Field or the Track & Field Complex, turn right onto Chanticleer Drive after passing Kimbel Arena and before getting to the Baseball Stadium.

From the North, take the “South of the Border” exit (IMPOSSIBLE to miss).
