2008-09 SEASON REVIEW

The 2008-09 season was a special one for the Auburn Tigers program as the Tigers were ranked as high as No. 25 in the ITA Team National rankings. A trio of athletes were ranked in the national individual rankings as well. Junior Fani Chifchieva headlined the individual rankings, as she wrapped up the season with a No. 6 individual ranking, en route to becoming Auburn’s first three-time All-American in history. Also cracking the ITA National Rankings were a pair of seniors in Whitney Chappell and Alex Haney, who ended the season ranked as the No. 15 doubles pair in the nation. Haney also was ranked No. 26 at the end of the year with a 17-2 regular season mark in singes play. She was 10-0 in her final regular season matches earning herself South Region Senior-of-the-Year recognition by the ITA. Haney, along with Chifchieva, were both named to the All-SEC First Team for their efforts on the season. The 2009 season opened up with Auburn hosting the Auburn Winter Invitational Jan. 16-18. The Tigers went a combined 18-2 in matches against UAB, Southern Mississippi and Georgia State. Dual meet action began on Jan. 28 as the Tigers traveled to No. 8 Georgia Tech, dropping the match, 5-2. Auburn picked up its first dual-meet victory of the season over Louisville on Feb. 1, defeating the No. 39 team in the nation 4-0 at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Clemson, S.C. Following well-fought defeats to No. 11 Clemson, No. 27 Texas A&M and No. 21 TCU, Auburn ran off a five-match win streak with wins over UAB, Georgia State., Mercer, Troy and an upset win over No. 18 LSU in Auburn’s SEC opener. Against the Bayou Bengals, Auburn won five-of-six singles matches to take the 5-2 victory over the No. 18 team in the nation, which would prove Auburn’s best victory of the season over a nationally-ranked team. Chifchieva highlighted the individual victories, as the No. 11 ranked player in the country downed No. 12 Megan Falcon 6-4, 6-3. Following a 6-1 loss at the hands of No. 28 Arkansas in SEC action on March 3, Auburn rattled off three straight victories over ranked opponents.

The first victory came on March 15 against SEC rival, No. 67 Ole Miss. The Tigers captured the back-and-forth battle after Myrthe Molenveld, playing in the No. 4 position, defeated Gabriela Rangel 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (4) to propel the No. 49 Tigers to a 4-3 win over the Rebels to kick off the threematch streak. Following the big win over Ole Miss, Auburn moved up four spots in the ITA rankings to No. 45, and the senior doubles tandem of Haney and Chappell cracked the nationalrankings as they were ranked No. 44 in the country. The Tigers then went on to defeat a pair of non-conference opponents in No. 46 William & Mary and No. 62 Marshall.
