ALLERGY-FRIENDLY BAKERY LOSES STOREFRONT, CONTINUES OPERATIONS PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com

Oxford Mills resident Shelley Jones has been baking allergy-friendly goods for families across the region since 2014. Having 15 food allergies herself, as well as a son with six and a daughter with 23, Jones knows the struggles of feeding a family with many dietary restrictions all too well. “Our baking is essential to anyone with multiple food allergies,” she said. “You can find peanut-free, dairy-free, gluten-free ... but you can’t get peanut, gluten, dairy, soy, preservative, and colour-free things, which is what we focus on.” Dolly Doll Cupcake Co. began in August 2014 after Jones left the retail industry on stress leave as a result of the daily disruptions brought on by her children’s struggles with allergies. “It was very difficult because there was no support to help me get through my week

when my kids were calling me from school saying they needed to go to the hospital because they couldn’t breathe,” said Jones. “With asthma, anaphylaxis, and other allergies, I was constantly being called away from work.” It was during her stress leave when her daughter suggested that she open a cupcake business, and so she did. Jones operated Dolly Doll Cupcake Co. out of her kitchen successfully for many years until the family decided they wanted to grow the business. They found a home in North Gower which doubled as a storefront for the bakery and opened in August of last year. “It was perfect, big, and allowed us a birthday party room which was where we wanted to expand,” said Jones. The bakery was embraced by the community as Jones’ orders grew and she watched her kids build relationships with regular customers. Sadly, after only six months, the storefront was lost due to family separa-

tion issues. Now, Jones is running the bakery out of her Oxford Mills home and delivering orders from North Grenville to Ottawa, Carleton Place and beyond

on a weekly basis. She hopes to find a new storefront for Dolly Doll in Oxford Mills or Kemptville. Jones prepares made-fromscratch goods with organic and locally sourced ingredients and does her research to ensure that there is no risk of cross-contamination during the manufacturing or packaging processes. “It’s a lot of research that parents don’t have the time to do, so we do it for them,” she said. Dolly Doll Cupcake Co. offers birthday cakes, buns, loaves, dinner rolls, date squares, cookies, doughnuts, truffles, and more. A popular favourite is her chocolate brownie bars made with No Go coffee from North Gower. Allergies aside, Dolly Doll also caters to strict diets such as sugar-free or low-carb, high-protein diets such as the paleo and keto diets. WALKING SCHOOL BUS PROGRAM COULD BE COMING Continued from page 1

ing guards. Why don't we?" she asked. Her daughter attends South Branch Elementary and passes through the Concession/Prescott intersection when she walks to school, which Davidson said she feels is unsafe. In light of a recent traffic study conducted on Concession Road, Davidson proposed that painted crosswalks, even with push buttons, are not a sufficient safety measure for young children crossing streets where there is regular excessive speeding. Davidson recognized that most children in North Grenville ride the bus, but suggested that maybe fewer would if they felt safer walking to school. "I think it is in our best interest to lessen kids on busses - it will save money with less transportation, cause less pollution, and there will be more active and healthy children," she said. She identified a need for crossing guards at three intersections in Kemptville. Davidson also identified

THE ISSUE: PEDESTRIAN AND STUDENT SAFETY LOCAL IMPACT: DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS, REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE HEALTH UNIT AND SCHOOL COUNCIL HELPED A MOTHER MAKE HER CASE TO COUNCIL, REGARDING THE NEED FOR CROSSING GUARDS the County Road 43 crosswalk in front of St. Michael Catholic High School is another area of concern. "If you are there at St. Mike's when all the kids get out and cross at Shoppers Drug Mart, it's very busy and there have been fatalities on that highway," said Davidson, who has witnessed two car accidents at the intersection. She also identified a flashing crosswalk on County Road 44 as another spot where a crossing guard is in need as the measures in place aren't

enough. "If anyone else thinks it's sufficient, then I recommend taking a little five- to seven-year-old kid and having them walk across the road and see how confident they feel," she said. Where Davidson works in Barrhaven, she said there are three crossing guards on one street. "I know we don't have the budget of Ottawa, but I'm just saying - sometimes safety has to be considered over money, and there should be some way to maneuver funds." At the conclusion of her presentation, Davidson requested a motion for crossing guards to be hired for the 2019 - 2020 school year. Chair of South Branch Elementary's school council, Sami Kutowy, also spoke to the issue of pedestrian safety during the deputation. "I don't feel comfortable allowing my children to walk or bike to school," said Kutowy. "Clothier and Prescott, even for adults, is a little risky trying to cross there." She also noted the Prescott Street intersections with Reuben Crescent,

Van Buren Street and Concession Road as unsafe. Kutowy asked council to look into why previous crossing guard funding ceased, and what the costs were, stating that a growth in enrollment at local schools should prompt a bigger budget for student safety. Former crossing guards in the downtown Kemptville core were taken away when Kemptville Public School and North Grenville District High School moved. School health coordinator with the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, Tawnya Boileau said the unit recently received $60,000 from the Ontario Active School Travel Fund to implement an active school travel pro-

ject for North Grenville. The project will see the hiring of an engineering firm to conduct a walking hazard assessment around seven schools in Kemptville, for which the RFPs have been issued. An active transportation charter will also be developed during the project; a document which she said she hopes partners such as local school boards, the municipality, the OPP and the health unit will sign onto. The third component of the project is to raise gen-

eral awareness around active school travel to make it the norm, and part of the local culture. Boileau confirmed that 95 per cent of local students travel to and from school by bus, and that crossing guards are typically employed three hours per day at minimum wage. She said North Grenville could potentially be added to the health unit's program for active school travel to bring a walking school bus to town, as Almonte and Smiths Falls have initiated. Council passed a motion to direct staff to prepare an administrative report looking into the costs for crossing guards and the possibility for a walking school bus program. CAO Brian CarrĂŠ said data from the health unit's walking hazard assessment will help inform the report, which should be provided before the end of August.

NORTH GRENVILLE LIBRARY MARKS 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST LUNAR LANDING July 20, 1969. Most of us remember exactly where we were on that historic day when Neil Armstrong

took his "One Small Step" onto the surface of the moon and into the history books. The Apollo 11 missi-

on was the culmination of a bitterly fought Cold War rivalry between America and the USSR to be the first to land a man on the moon. Eight years earlier on May 25, 1961 president John F. Kennedy had made it clear in an address to a joint session of Congress that America was prepared to do whatever was necessary to win the quest for the moon. Achieving that goal would create a huge boost in national prestige and demonstrate to the rest of the world which country was more advanced in science, technology and the exploration of space. It would require unprecedented resources, both intellectual and financial, to determine who would claim victory. One significant, if unintended legacy, of the Apollo program is the way it forever altered our view of our home planet. Images of the

beautiful blue Earth afloat in the infinite blackness of space - taken from the hostile lifeless surface of the moon - helped us realize how exceedingly rare and fragile our existence in this universe truly is. Pondering those images provided a tremendous boost to the global environmental movement. On Thursday, July 18,

the North Grenville Public Library will host a special event looking back at this epic saga. Amateur astronomer Frank Hitchens will offer a fascinating multimedia presentation entitled "Apollo 11: The Quest for the Moon." It will tell the story of what is arguably the greatest achievement in science and engineering

in the history of humanity. This presentation begins at 7 p.m. and admission is free. The North Grenville Public Library is located at 1 Water St. For more information, contact the library at 613258-4711 or email info@ngpl.ca. Submitted by Frank Hitchens

IT'S SUMMER HIT THE BEACH It's officially summer and time to get outside and enjoy the balmy weather after a long winter and what seemed like a non-existent spring. Many families flocked to Leeds, Grenville and Lanark beaches last week during the first heat wave of the summer and they're a great way to cool off. We can all remember eagerly anticipating the last day of school and kicking off the summer with lazy days spent relaxing in the local creek or pond. While there's always a risk of swimming in untreated waters at area beaches, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is looking out for residents. The health unit performs weekly testing of the water at all beaches during the season until Aug. 31 to ensure it's safe for swimming. The beaches being tested this year include Almonte Beach, Dalhousie Lake, Centennial Beach, Riverside Beach, Lanark Beach, Pakenham Beach, Rideau Ferry Yacht Club, Robertson Lake Beach, Smiths Falls (junior and senior), in Lanark County. In Leeds and Grenville, Bellamy Park, Merrickville, Westport Sand Lake, Portland Campbell Street Beach and Foley Mountain Beach will be monitored. The health unit is all about public education to ensure the health of citizens in the tri-counties. Five samples from each beach will be collected each week and analyzed for E. coli bacteria. If they present more than 200 E. coli (the bathing water standard), a warning will be posted. They have committed to posting updates each Friday morning by 9:30 a.m., which are available at healthunit.org. High E. coli levels are normally seen after heavy rains due to surface water run-off or fecal material from birds and wildlife. E. coli has the potential to increase eye, ear, nose and throat infections, as well as stomach bugs. Any beaches presenting high levels of the bacteria will remain on the unsafe for swimming list until the counts have lowered. But the health unit isn't just checking for E. coli. They'll also be conducting tests for any blue-green algae blooms, spills or other safety issues that could impact the health of swimmers at those beaches. When visiting local beaches this summer, you should always evaluate the weather conditions to ensure it's safe to swim. If the water is cloudy, following high winds or a heavy rainfall, avoid it. If there is a lot of bird feces on the beach, there's also a chance that could infiltrate the water. Use common sense and be safe at the beach this summer. And don't forget the sunscreen!

LETTERS & COMMENTARY PREMIER SHOULD BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR JOB CUTS DEAR EDITOR: In my view, Ashley Kulp's article on the Upper Canada District School Board ("Student support workers fight job cuts" July 4, 2019) is an excellent one. I think she has shown in very clear terms those who are losing their jobs, what these losses will mean, especially to parents of children who require support. I think it is terrible that the provincial government is, yet again, attempting to balance the books on the backs of some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Something not mentioned in Ms. Kulp's article is the fact that, during the provincial election campaign last year, we were told again and again that the deficit would be eliminated through finding efficiencies, and that no one employed in the Ontario public sector would lose their job. Don't believe me? Here are just a few examples of Doug Ford's statements on

this topic during the election campaign. On May 27, during the leader's debate, Mr. Ford said: "(u)nder our government, I'm going to reinforce this, not one single person will lose their job." Four days later, he said "I say it every night and I'm going to say it again and again. No one, no one will lose their job." The day before the election, Mr. Ford was quoted as saying "I want to assure our public sector workers, to our nurses, to our teachers and to our doctors, that no one, and I repeat no one, will lose their job." So much for accountability.

KERRY BADGLEY, KEMPTVILLE

TRUSTEES HAVE NO UNDERSTANDING OF SCHOOLS DEAR EDITOR: When I learned that all student support partner positions across the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) were being eliminated, I wondered what on earth our trustees were thinking.

After reading the comments made by board chair John McAllister, I think I have my answer. His claim that kids in crisis are not served directly by a student support partner is inaccurate. My teenager has autism and ADHD, and suffers from debilitating anxiety. And while his wonderful teacher and other school staff were indeed important and necessary supports for him, the student support partner was his first point of contact during attacks of severe anxiety. Her intervention ensured that an anxiety attack didn't turn into a medical emergency. As well, I take issue with his comment that the UCDSB is "open for business." If our trustees would like us to believe that they are not in bed with a government that has no regard for the state of public education, perhaps quoting Doug Ford's favourite slogan to our local newspaper is not the way to go.

The man with the big, big smile touched many lives in his lifetime of working, first with heavy equipment on the CN Tower, and then followed with his love of livestock (his own), and trucking for other customers. He is resting peacefully now at St. Paul’s Cemetery - Westport and will always be most dearly missed. like us on

Thank you.

Our eight month journey was made easier with the help of family, neighbours and friends, including Texas ones. Our many trips to, and stays in Ottawa were assisted by “Wheels of Hope” and were attended by Dr. D. MacDonald and Malone. Extra special thank you to nurse practitioner Margaret O’Neill for home visits and Hospice Palliative Care Coordinator Sandy Whaley who were always there for us when needed. To all of those who donated in Robert’s memory, the mountains of sympathy messages received, food brought to our home, the many beautiful floral tributes, phone calls and hugs, all were graciously received. We would like to say a huge thank you to Blair and Son Funeral Home for offering the comfort and guidance we required and received while going through our family’s loss - their support and expertise went far above and beyond. Lastly, with our help and guidance, Priest David Ward did a marvelous job of performing the Church services from St. Paul’s Westport, assisted by musicians Joanne Lambert and Harry Adrian.

Happy 90th Birthday Mom! Love you with all my heart! Thank you for always being there for me. I’m so blessed to have such a wonderful Mom! Your loving daughter, Trudy Your mother is always with you. She’s the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, she’s the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick, the fragrance of life itself. She’s the cool hand on your brow when you’re not feeling well, she’s your breath in the air on a cold winter’s day. She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, the colors of a rainbow, she is Christmas morning. Your mother lives inside your laughter. She’s the place you came from, your first home, and she’s the map you follow with every step you take. She’s your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space... not even when gone with love to God’s everlasting heaven

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

To show her appreciation for her former high school chemistry teacher, Randilynne Urslak nominated St. Michael Catholic High School's Krista Van Gaal for the Excellence in Secondary School Teaching award from Queen's University. It was upon Urslak's graduation from Queen's Bachelor of Science program that she nominated Van Gaal, who also attended Queen's and graduated in 2005 just before starting her career at St. Michael's. Van Gaal attended Urslak's graduation ceremony and revisited the Queen's campus on June 11, where she was presented with the award. Urslak said Van Gaal motivates her passion for learning, and it was her experience as Van Gaal's chemistry student that inspired her to pursue a career in science. Only a handful of recipients are selected each year for the award, which recognizes educators that had a decisive and formative influence on their students during their high school career. "To be nominated, and thought of in that light, is beautiful in itself," said

Submitted/Randilynne Urslak Randilynne Urslak (left) nominated her former high school chemistry teacher, Krista Van Gaal, for Queen's University's Excellence in Secondary School Teaching award. Van Gaal. "It was the experience of a lifetime." It was her first teaching recognition. In her nomination letter, Urslak described Van Gaal as a conscientious, dedicated, and inspirational teacher who helped pave her path to success at university. When she found out in high school that Van Gaal would be her teacher, Urslak said she knew instantly that she would enjoy being part of her class, as she's heard so many good things about her personality and teaching qualities. "Little did I know; she would become more than just my teacher - she became my role model and

friend," stated Urslak. Through her high school career, Urslak said she struggled with anxiety and other mental health issues that often left her feeling stressed out and alone. Sometimes she would spend her lunch hours talking to Van Gaal, who would offer advice, strategies to persevere, or just listen. Urslak's letter noted Van Gaal's many efforts to support students, other teachers, and the school community at large, helping to create a positive and inclusive environment. When Urslak was in Grade 12 and unsure of what to pursue professionally, Van Gaal suggested working in pharmacy. They spent many lunch hours together researching the required education for a career in pharmacy, which Urslak continues to work towards as she recently accepted an offer to the University of Waterloo for a doctorate in pharmacy. Today, Urslak keeps in contact with Van Gaal and visits when she is home at Christmastime or during reading week. She said she hopes to one day be a mentor for young people and to inspire them to follow their dreams similarly to how Van Gaal inspired her.
