Visitors to the village's Blockhouse Museum will gain a little insight into McLean's life through an enhanced exhibit, launched during Canalfest weekend Aug. 3 and 4. "He's an eccentric millionaire of Merrickville and there are all sorts of stories surrounding his persona, some might be true and others might be fiction," noted Blockhouse Museum manager Elizabeth Robinson. McLean's impact on the village has always had a presence in the museum, but for the past five years, it's been separated in different areas. Due to the fact his large, wooden antique desk couldn't fit through the upstairs doorway, plans were made to enhance the exhibit on the main floor. "This year, we thought it (exhibit) should all be in one place and we've given it a bit of a facelift," she said, adding that like the other exhibits showcased, it will be bilingual. Featuring an old Underwood typewriter and office furniture owned by McLean, photos and illustrations tell the story of the man, his business and his impact on Merrickville. His biggest claim to fame is as a railway contractor, constructing a great deal of

the trans-Canadian railways. Born in 1881 to Canadian parents in North Dakota, he started working as a water boy on the railways with the Winston Brothers and worked his way up to president of the Dominion Atlantic Railway company. However, his philanthropy often overshadowed his accomplishments in business. Robinson said he would give Christmas presents to each child in Merrickville every year and created the toboggan slide on Collar Hill. His most mysterious role, she said, is as 'Mr. X.' "He became known as Mr. X is the Second World War, and was this anonymous philanthropist who would walk around military hospitals and give out money to wounded shoulders," Robinson remarked. "He would show up, give out thousands of dollars and then disappear again."

Her favourite story was one from the Great Depression, where McLean refused to fire any of his employees. He didn't have a job for one of his engineers, so he asked him to install a home theatre system in his garage. His personal exploits are also well chronicled, Robinson said.

Robinson said the McLean exhibit is just the tip of the iceberg for the rest of the summer. The museum, which sees approximately 10,000 visitors each season, is gearing up to unveil a War of 1812 display, hopefully in time for the Aug. 9-11 Merrickville Fair. Another on fashion, focused around an antique silk wedding dress is planned, and the re-creation of an 1830s bedroom upstairs will be revamped. "We want people to connect with our exhibits on a personal level and really get involved in the history of this place," she commented. Four summer students,

in high school and university, are helping out this season, thanks to donations and government grants. "It's great," said student Anya Perry. "I have such a deep passion for history and the history here is so fascinating. It's great to learn and share that with people." There are also plans in the works for a video tour of the second floor. "The building is not accessible as it's an 1800s building ... so we want to show it (second floor) off to people anywhere and everywhere." The museum was built as a fort for soldiers in 1832 and opened as a museum in 1967. It's leased from Parks Canada by the Village of Merrickville-Wolford, but operated by the Merrickville & District Historical Society. Located at 279 St. Lawrence Street, it's open full-time from June to Labour Day, after which volunteers will staff it on weekends until it closes for the season on Thanksgiving.

"Are you kidding me?" she wanted to know. "It's a very serious offence," replied OPP Sgt. Byron Newell, steadying himself on the edge of the OPP marine unit boat in the Lower Rideau Lake near Rideau Ferry, as he extended his hand to give the female boater her $240 fine. The female boater had been caught on Friday, Aug. 2, heading toward a cottage near the bridge, with only two life jackets for three people on board, including herself. But Newell was not done with her. "We have to follow you back," he said. "We want to make sure you get back

As he handed over the ticket, Newell recommended the Discover Boating app for his phone, whenever he had questions about the rules of the water. The OPP was out in force, with three vessels cruising the waters of the Lower Rideau as part of the launch of Operation Dry Water, to remind boaters to not only operate water vehicles sober, but to make sure that all of their safety equipment is in order, and on board. There have been 10 fatalities on Ontario's waterways so far this year, with 24 last year, and some boaters are getting the message. Jonathan Hull had life jackets on all of his three children, and one on hand nearby for himself, on his boat. "I've seen lots of close accidents on the water," Hull said, as his children were handed OPP T-shirts for wearing their life jackets.

KDH-SPONSORED ONTARIO HEALTH TEAM DEVELOPMENT CONTINUES Kemptville District Hospital (KDH) chief executive officer Frank J. Vassallo announced July 19 that development of its proposed partner-driven Ontario Health Team (OHT) will continue, informed by a formal response received from the Ontario Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care. In a letter dated July 18, the ministry advised that it had assessed the KDH-sponsored OHT as being "in development," meaning that, although there is a strong degree of readiness, further development is needed to progress to the full application stage. "Although we weren't selected to proceed to the full application at this juncture, we are very encouraged by the ministry's assessment," said Vassallo. "The ministry sees us as clearly on the path to becoming an OHT and has stated that they will dedicate resources to us to support this effort." The 40-bed eastern Ontario hospital completed the ministry's

self-assessment form in collaboration with a wide array of health and social service partners in its region, submitting the document to the ministry on May 15, with a total of 28 partner signatories. Vassallo noted that the ministry commented on the KDH OHT's wide array of diverse partners, including the majority of family doctors in the region. "The feeling among our partners is that this government restructuring of our provincial health system provides us with a rare opportunity to co-design a more patient and family centred system - one that will enable the provision of better co-ordinated, connected, and integrated community-based care," he explained. Patients and families have been and will continue to be an integral part of the development of the KDH-sponsored OHT. "I was very pleased to see the requirement in the ministry's self-assessment form for each partner in the OHT to demonstrate a track record of meaning-

"It is crucial for every OHT in the province to be driven by the needs of patients, families, caregivers, and the communities they serve."

The ministry announced July 18 that of the more than 150 selfassessments received, 31 were designated as ready to proceed to the full application stage, 43 teams were designated as in development, and the remainder (other than a few who presented a regional/provincial approach)

were classified as in discovery, meaning they have a greater amount of work to do to progress to the full application stage. "The ministry also stated that there is a very small difference between the full application and in development stages," Vassallo noted. The provincial restructuring, considered Ontario's biggest health system reform in 50 years, was announced Feb. 26 and the legislation around it came into effect June 6 under the Connecting Care Act. A major component of the revamp is the formation of Ontario Health Teams, which will be made up of an array of health providers such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, home care agencies and family doctors, and will be responsible to provide the range of health services their populations need. he built life-size dollhouses that they could walk into. The play house in our yard is a perfect tiny replica of a farmhouse with shingles and window boxes and a little front porch. It is wired for electricity and has a little kitchen complete with child-sized cabinets inside. Stairs lead up to a tiny loft for sleeping. It has now been taken over by a family of groundhogs and is slowly disintegrating into the earth, our very own art installation. Since we have been married he has built a split-level home on Jig Street near Bishop's Mills and he fixed up an old farmhouse (but not red brick) around the corner. Then he heard someone was getting rid of a pile of cedar logs after cleaning up their forest. He started researching log cabins. He got the logs for a great price - but the catch was he had to pull them out of the bush himself. That winter he would spend the better part of a day collecting just two or three logs at a time. The tractor got stuck in the snow and the logs were extremely heavy to move, snapping the chains, but he did it with patience and persistence, all by himself. Once he got the logs to the build site, I had to come and see for myself how he was managing to do this solo. I made a video of him

My husband loves to build things. He said that if he had known that an engineer can do more than just drive a train, he would have studied structural engineering in college. As a kid, he and his brothers built the usual things: a go-cart, a tree fort, and even a Sea Flea for zooming up the river at the cottage. He built his first house after university and a work stint in Manitoba. He and a buddy bought the land together and they each invested in the build. My husband (who was neither a husband nor a Farmer at the time) chose the house plans: a sprawling bungalow with a 12-pitch roof. "We built the biggest house in Chatham," he remembers. It was quite an undertaking for a first build, and not without its challenges. But it seems the man thrives on challenges. The next build was actually a renovation, on a stone century house near Oxford Station, in 1990. Then he built another bungalow (with a more reasonable roof this time) on Smith Road. Finally he set his sights on a farm. He started scouting for properties, dreaming of one day owning and fixing up a red brick Canadiana farmhouse. He ended up buying 200 acres on O'Neill Road, and building a house from two sets of designs put together. During the ice storm. Like I said - a challenge does not deter this man. While raising little girls,

putting a chain around the log and over a tree branch, tied to the back of his truck. With this pulley system he raised, swung and lowered the logs onto the scaffolding and then reached up to tip them into place on the wall. That cabin was a real work of art with a handhewn fireplace mantle, huge ceiling beams and contrasting shades of wood on the door sills. He sold it for a tidy profit, and started looking for another lot. This time the Farmer is building on Bass Lake near Lombardy. The plans came out of some sort of smallhouse book, but considering the three-storey structure is built into the hillside with a walk-out basement, it's quite a tall building. I guess the man temporarily forgot that he is afraid of heights. Once again he has a 12-pitch roof to climb whenever he needs to pulley a piece of wood into place. He had the wood for this cottage dropped off on the front field of the farm - a massive pyramid of logs in all sizes. He dragged them one at a time into the barn where his new toy, a 16-foot sawmill, turned the logs into mountains of boards. That's what kept him busy while he was awaiting building permits last year. I posted a photo of the almost-finished cottage the other day. People don't believe me when I say he built it himself but truly, no one else has helped to this point. He's decided he is going to hire a professional to finish the roof, however. That is one challenge he is not up for.

"Today, we were doing a little quick stop. I should have had my jacket on." Among the boats stopped this day, there were many who did not have operational flashlights - either because of no batteries, or because they were wet and not operational. OPP Cons. Russ Beaton had already issued one ticket for a boat not having a fire extinguisher. Another hot topic: "Unfortunately, we are still seeing open alcohol," Beaton said. Back on shore, Newell agreed with Beaton that al-

cohol was still an issue along with marijuana. "We are starting to see more of it," he said, of boaters impaired by marijuana. "I wouldn't say its become a real hazard or problem yet, but we definitely have seen an increase." Locally, the main waterways that the OPP will be patrolling will include the Rideau Canal, Otty Lake, and Mississippi Lake. There are 16 marine officers across eastern Ontario.

As for the large number of boats lacking proper operating flashlights, Newell said that "it's one of the main safety concerns" on the water. "It seems to be one of the number one things that people tend to neglect. Even though it's just a flashlight, it's still important ... it's not just to see in the dark, it's a visual signalling device," so you can signal to shore or another boat if you break down or are in trouble.

In recent years our options for walking have improved significantly, especially in Lanark County. In the United Kingdom, public walking paths have long been a staple for both confirmed hikers and regular or occasional walkers. The Brits are militant when it comes to their public spaces. In our community in recent years an extensive series of trails has been developed. The town is also on the Trans Canada Trail (it was officially renamed 'The Great Trail' in 2016) which is a cross-Canada system of trails, roadways, greenways and waterways. I find that trail etiquette or lack of it, is an ongoing problem. In Europe, the relationship between users is clearly defined and carefully adhered to. Walkers and cyclists in particular respect each other's space. We regularly visit the resort community of Stowe, Vermont. The town has long had a paved 5.3mile recreation path that is maintained year-round that features several bridges over the west branch of the Little River and the mountain scenery along the way is breathtaking. The Stowe recreation path also has an 11-point set of rules users are asked to obey. I believe all similar recreation trails in Canada can learn from their welltuned example.

On our walks in Carleton Place we encounter many users who do not respect others. One of the most annoying issues is cyclists who fail to warn pedestrians of their presence. In turn pedestrians should look over their shoulders and give cyclists a clear path. Groups of walkers should not be spread across the entire pathway. People don't adhere to the usual rules. They ignore signage, cycling or walking straight past stop signs for instance. Besides being dangerous it also shows a distinct lack of courtesy. The rules of the road also apply to cyclists.

I find that trail etiquette or lack of it, is an ongoing problem. The list of path rules in Stowe urges users to obey all signage and asks cyclists to yield for walkers, joggers or children. Bike riders are also required to maintain a safe speed and at intersections they are advised to stop and walk their bicycles across the road. The bottom line comes down to respect. TELEMEDICINE MAKING HEALTH CARE CONNECTIONS "This is so much better than going all the way to Ottawa," said a telemedicine client. "My family could be with me at my appointment, because it was close to home." The client had just attended a telemedicine appointment with a specialist located in Ottawa - but the client was at a health centre located less than 30 minutes from her Leeds and Grenville home. She saw her specialist through the Ontario Telemedicine Network, using a special television screen and video equipment. Hospitals, community health centres, family health teams, mental health organizations, family doctors and nurse practitioners are working together to reduce barriers to health such as distance and travel, using technology to

solve these problems. What is telemedicine? Telemedicine connects people with their health care providers or specialists in much the same way that it's possible to have a video conversation over the internet. Using specialized audiovisual equipment, a secure link between a client and a health consultant is established. This secure link is what makes sure that these sessions are private and confidential. A person receiving care in this way may be in one town, while the health care provider may be located in different city or town. A specially-trained nurse (telemedicine co-or-

dinator) is able to clinically support clients during their appointment, and is available to assist the specialist as needed. The nurse is also trained to operate the video equipment, and any other equipment that might be involved in the appointment. The doctor might wish to use a digital stethoscope (this makes it possible to listen to a person's heart beating from miles away), or the doctor may wish a picture of a skin condition sent so that he or she can look at it more closely. sport a distinctive bright green colour. True to its name, this was indeed more "natural" looking - creamy coloured, with streaks of chocolate running through it. "I really like it," Mallory said. "The mint is not very powerful and there's lots of chocolate. There's a nice blend (of mint and chocolate)." Ashley had the rhubarb caramel sundae, which consisted of tangy rhubarb ice cream covered in nuts, caramel sauce and whipped cream. "It's definitely tangy," she noted of the ice cream, which is made with local rhubarb. "I like it because you get good chunks of rhubarb." Ashley added that she really likes the Downtowne Ice Cream and Candy Shoppe because you get to "experiment with different flavours" like rhubarb, as opposed to sticking with the traditional chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. Summer had a sundae with Peach, Passionfruit, Raspberry Mango gelato, hot fudge sauce, whipped cream, nuts, a cherry and tons of sprinkles. We tried to get her to say what she thought of it as she was eating, but she was apparently too far gone into flavour heaven. Once she was finished, however, she declared "this is the best ice cream place in the world," so that pretty much sums it up. Is there anything better than ice cream on a hot July afternoon? Not in my opinion. I'd been hankering for some really good ice cream and had heard that the Downtowne Ice Cream and Candy Shoppe in Merrickville offers a top notch experience. So, a handful of my newsroom colleagues, my 7-year-old daughter, Summer, and I made the trek from Smiths Falls on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. The first thing you notice is the building's exterior. It's painted light blue with pink and purple accents, including a bright pink door -perfect for an ice cream and candy shop. Outside are lots of benches, also brightly painted, where customers can sit and enjoy their ice cream. Inside, the first thing that hits you is the deliciously rich scent of waffle cones; eyes are drawn to a colourful freezer display of homemade ice cream and gelato; flavours made with local ingredients (there were five in total that day) are labelled. The women who served us asked if we wanted any samples, to which the answer was a firm YES. I think Summer tried about five little spoonfuls of different flavours before I insisted she make her choice. The most notable sample I tried was the Thai Fusion, which tasted like spicy, sweet peanut butter - almost like biting into frozen Pad Thai. I liked it, but not enough to order a full scoop. Instead, I went for Royal Cheesecake gelato, which tasted like biting into a slice of New York cheese cake. The tangy cream cheese flavour really shone through, complemented by the chunks of cookie crust. Laurie had the Mango Island Gelato. The first thing she noticed was the smell, which she declared transported her to a beautiful white sand beach in the Caribbean. Tasting it was "like biting into fresh, juicy mango," and she described the fruit taste as authentic" - you could tell it came from real mangoes as opposed to artificial flavouring. Tara tried the Gibbons Maple Walnut, which is made with local maple syrup from the Leeds Grenville farm Gibbons Maple Syrup. Tara admitted to being "very picky about ice cream," but said she was "actually enjoying this. There's a good ratio of walnuts to ice cream, with a walnut in every bite." Everyone agreed that the distinct local flavour made the ice cream extra special. Mallory had Naturally Chocolate Mint, which was also made from local ingredients. Even on first glance, you could tell this was going to be different from most chocolate mint ice creams, which usually

ASHBY, Olive Passed away peacefully after a short illness age 88 in the late hours of July 30, 2019, at home in Merrickville. Olive is survived by her son, Graham (Janet Anderson); her daughter, Zoë (David Hoffman); and her son Vernon. She is preceded in death by Alan Ashby, her loving husband of over 65 years; her father, Griffith Hughes; her mother, Martha Hughes; and her sisters, Margaret Lessels and Barbara Cook. She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Skye, Robin, Adam, Nathan, and Charlotte and her great-grandson Caio. Also greatly missed by many other family members in England and Canada. Olive was a people person, always ready to help others with generous enthusiasm and a laugh that was infectious. An avid and accomplished craftsperson, her teddies have been hugged and loved by both children and adults. From Wales to England and then to Canada, Olive touched many lives as someone who cared passionately for fairness while celebrating the joys of everyday life. Olive’s openness ensured she had countless friends regardless of age or background, maintaining some friendships for over 70 years. She was dedicated to her family, supportive of all their endeavours and cherishing their time and talents. Olive was a sweetheart who filled hearts with joy. She will be truly missed. Olive was a great lover of cats and theatre. Donations in her honour can be made to the Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) and the Smiths Falls Station Theatre. She will be sadly missed by her many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. GIBBON, Ted It is with great sadness the sons of Ted Gibbon announce his passing at the age of 67 in The Ottawa Hospital on July 22, 2019. Ted lived in Lanark County for the past 27 years of his life, met many people and made many friends. Ted was predeceased by his parents Marion and Ted Gibbon of Ottawa. He is survived by his sons Jason (Kelly), and Adam of Perth, his brother Jack (Hannah) of New Brunswick, sister Jill Edwards (Glen) of Thunder Bay, aunts Marg Vietch and Lillian Brodie, his son’s mother Joanne, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ted was born in Hearst, Cochrane District Ontario, then moved to Ottawa at a young age where he spent most of his adolescence. He graduated from Algonquin College, then went on to work in the government where he met Joanne, the mother of his two sons; they eventually settled in Richmond, Ontario where he and Joanne raised their boys up until their teens, then moved to Lanark County. Ted had various jobs throughout his life, some independent and also for various businesses, eventually settling in Grenville Castings where he made many more friends and spent the rest of his working days there until he was forced to leave do to illness. Ted loved watching sports, travelling and fishing; he said “I had some of my best times fishing on the Rideau River”, in Burritts Rapids, where he and his family had a cottage growing up, and where he loved spending time, eventually bringing his own family there. Ted will be deeply loved and missed by his sons, family and friends. His wishes were to have a celebration of life, which will be held on August 17th starting at 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Perth legion. Those wishing may make a memorial donation to The Lung Association.

Predeceased by his parents Jean and Ed Donaldson, his sister Colleen, infant son Shawn, granddaughter Zoe and his first wife Anita. Proud father of Cheryl (Hugh), Brent (Donna), Kim (John), Lorrie (Len), Angela and step-father of Chris and Eric (Brenda). Dick was also cherished by his niece Alison and her family. BULLOCH, Ronald Clyde Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at hospital, Perth, Ontario at the age of 87. Ronald was born in Hopetown, Ontario on February 23, 1932. He moved to Balderson, Ontario when he was 8 years old, where he later established a dairy farm on the 8th Line. Ron valued hard work and spent many a long day in the barn, on the tractor and in the bush on the skidder. He worked from sunup to sundown and wouldn’t have had it any other way. Ron was of course, an enthusiastic euchre player, who also enjoyed early mornings at Tim’s and the company of his many cats over the years (great mousers all). Ronald cherished his family above all else. He was the son of the late Clyde W. and Stella (Hart) Bulloch. He is survived by his devoted wife Ludmila “Mitch” (Stricharuk). He was the loved and respected father of Barry (Beth), Lori (late David Sullivan) and Rhonda (Janson LaBond), his grandsons Benji and Randy (Maggie) and their sons Weston and Nash. Ronnie will be dearly missed by his sister Rena (late Lloyd) Campbell, nieces, nephews, extended family and long-time friends.
