CITY OF SYRACUSE HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR WAYFINDER
Collaboration with Tiffany Soohoo Andrew Trenton
We were asked to design wayfinders for Syracuse Historical Walking Tour. They were required to have both the historical and modern photos, and information of the landmark, as well as a map that direct tourists to the next landmark.

SKETCHES
In order to make the wayfinder recognizable, we landed on organic forms as a starting points to distinguish itself from the mostly geometric-formed historical landmark buildings. However, we aimed to reach the balanced relationship of standing-out and blending-in between the wayfinders and the landmarks, so we decided to utilize colors and materials to give the wayfinder some shared characteristics with the landmarks.
RENDER
Primary information
Larger scale maps and photos
Secondary information
Small scale map, legend, and description Subtly angled upward for easier viewing.
Organic form
subtly stand out from its surrounding
The wayfinder provides user information of the walking tour on both sides so the users can learn different information about the landmark and the tour as well as recognize the wayfinder regardless the direction they are facing the wayfinder. The larger circles provide main information such while the smaller ones provide other details. The smaller circle is angled upward with a 30 degree angle for users with regular height to read the information with bending down.
STRUCTURE
Fossil Graphic Panel
Sun-proof and vandalism-proof
Anodized Aluminum
Cheap, durable and weather-proof
The wayfinder is assembled in multiple components. In the case of vandalism, each panel can be replaced individually. Moreover, the graphic panel will be printed on Fossil Graphic panels. Graffiti and other forms of vandalism can be easily removed with commercial solvent. Other parts will be made out of anodized aluminum, which are inexpensive, durable and essentially weather-proof.
Multiple Component
Displayed information can be changed periodically. Inexpensive repair and replacement.
GRAPHIC FRONT The historical and modern photos are blended together in the large circle with the name and the information of the landmark . The small circle presents a map with a small scale that correspond to the direction the wayfinder is facing to provide users sense of directions as well as other landmarks and attractions in the neighborhood.
BACK The map with large scale that covers the entire walking tour area is situated in the back of the wayfinder. The small circle serves as a legend for icons of different landmarks.
