PORTFOLIO CONCEPT

KENSTRUCT Construct means to create an objects, idea or solution by assembling and arranging ideas and terms. This word accurately describes my understandings of design. Graphic design is a construct of integrated communication, design, and problem solving. Designers specialize in the structuring and organization of abstract information to aid communication. Good design is simply and clearly constructed information. As Paul Rand said, “Design is the method of putting form and content together. Design, just as art, has multiple definitions, there is no single definition. Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated.”

OBJECTIVE Design a fictitious film festival for a chosen director based on a running thread that appears in all of his or her films. Envision the entire event from location, festival schedule, appearances, and feature films. Develop an entire system of multiple deliverables while capturing the style and essence of your director.

CONCEPT The Edge of Dawn film festival will celebrate the iconic director, David Fincher’s, unique construction of storytelling in Seven, The Game, Fight Club, Panic Room, and Zodiac. The common thread of these five films in particular involves confronting inner darkness, though dangerous and terrifying, to achieve an understanding of self. David Fincher’s innovative use of violence transforms his characters on a psychological level. He uses darkness to bring attention to the characters’ natures, as well as to create appropriate atmospheres. It is through the darkness of man, manifested in mental disorders and physical violence, that Fincher shows how the dark side of human nature can force a personal transformation.

DAVID FINCHER AUGUST 28, 1962 DENVER, COLORADO, USA

With only a handful of credits tucked under his belt, wunderkind prodigy David Fincher became one of the most celebrated artists to scale the heights of Tinseltown during the late ‘90s and early 2000s. Although Fincher met with some derision early on, as the director of the critically excoriated Alien 3 in 1992, his work on Seven three years down the road won him critical approval and unanimous acceptance across the industry, and marked only the beginning of an influential, splashy career.

OBJECTIVE Choose a brand that is dead, dying, or defunct and identify its essence. Reinvent the brand by developing a new visual identity, and by creating a brand experience that takes that company to a whole new realm while keeping the brand’s essence.

CONCEPT Braniff International Airways is not only a airline, it extends the customers’ lifestyle from their home to the their trip’s destination. Long gone are the days of the humdrum. Braniff took the aviation experience to a whole new level, they were an airline with a vision for the future. On May 12th, 1982, the world’s most colorful airline ‘Braniff International Airways’ ceased operations. We want to bring the Braniff’s soul back. This soul is about making its customers embrace their journey through life. This is what the rebranding of concept is based on. Shift your life with new Braniff.

OBJECTIVE Choose a topic and demonstrate its relationship with various social, political, economical, historical, and cultural contexts through research, creating visual deliverables, and, finally, by developing an insightful book.

CONCEPT The government’s restriction on communication has become a serious problem in recent years. In the UK in 2011, Prime Minister David Cameron considered providing the government with the power to block or limit rioters’ access to social websites because of the London riot. At the same time, San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) shut down cell phone reception in the tunnel to hinder would-be protestors because a BART officer fatally shot a man armed with a knife. Similarly, Senator Joe Lieberman is trying to pass an Internet “Kill Switch” bill. This bill raises concern about cyber rights. Through interviews and research, I will collect facts on communication restrictions and the public’s reaction with the goal of constructing a report on developing possible solutions through graphic design.

OBJECTIVE Create a water bottle line. Choose a brand that needs to be redesigned or make up your own company. Either give an old brand’s logo a “face-lift” or create a new brand’s logo. Be highly creative in the bottle and designs.

CONCEPT Revive Water is a made-up brand for bottled water. Its water comes from a natural spring located in the mountains. Revive Water will use the health benefits of drinking water, as well as its water source, to promote its product through designing the brand’s logo around these two concepts. By relying on simple geometric shapes and color combinations for Revive Water’s bottle design, I will deliver a clear and strong image to the bottled water industry and construct a package that portrays natural health and vitality.

OBJECTIVE Create an experimental typographic poster that visually interprets a song of your choosing. Explore various ways of looking at type without depending on software.

CONCEPT Bart Howard wrote the popular song, “Fly Me to the Moon,” in 1954. The song brings to mind a romantic scene: During a quiet evening, two lovers sit on a rooftop. The moon is bright in the sky and the stars are shining like thousands of eyes looking at the couple. While the music plays, the moonlight shines on them. “Fly Me to the Moon” is more like a love poem than a song. It’s so pure. And just like true love, it’s beautiful and romantic. This poster was constructed by using feather, light flare, and shadow techniques to establish the romantic scene as I imagined it.

OBJECTIVE Redesign a nonprofit organization’s brand image from its basic identity to its promotional brochure and web site. Use only one color to significantly reduce the cost of printing.

CONCEPT Located in the Dr. Martin Luther King Library in San Jose, Books Aloud is a wonderful nonprofit organization that provides audio books for people with hindered reading abilities. Books Aloud’s mission is to improve the quality of life for these people through audio books. I will construct Book Aloud’s new image using “friendship” and “humanity” as the two main concepts for the redesign, using only bright green to represent affinity and hope.

OBJECTIVE Design a book for a chosen subculture that exists in the San Francisco Bay area. Use systems thinking through the design process. Master both the content and form, and promote the use of an effective design.

CONCEPT Bicycle is a very popular subculture in the San Francisco Bay area, having even started developing its own groups. These groups have established unique dress codes, cultural events, and lifestyle ideologies. After conducting research and interviewing local bicyclists, I am to construct a book that will correctly portray the look and spirit of San Francisco’s bicycle subculture. I not only designed a story book, I also made this book become a tool for potential bicyclists to help them integrate into the local bicycling community.

OBJECTIVE Become familiar with the concept of sustainability. Identify a design challenge related to sustainability, then address that challenge in a way that demonstrates your expertise on—and insights into—this growing business and cultural concern.

CONCEPT It is difficult to reduce daily energy consumption in our life, because it is difficult to change people’s behavior. Changing people’s behavior is one key to teaching them to save energy. Conservation is another key to reducing energy consumption. Conservation occurs when people decide to use less and waste less. Turning out lights after leaving a room, reducing the temperature settings on heaters, or choosing sustainable energy resources are all examples of conservation. It is important to make conservation a regular habit based on how we use energy every day. VIGI stands for Visible Energy, it is centered around this concept. Through the idea of vitality, I will construct a beautiful color gradient based on the house energy consumption data.

OBJECTIVE Create a first aid kit. The project requires conceptualize a new brand using creativity and imagination. Usable, sustainable, recyclable materials should be used on this project.

CONCEPT M.U.S.K stands Men’s Urban Survival Kit. For this project, I chose to design a survival kit to meet the urban man’s basic needs. In our current society, men need to look good do right. Basically, every man needs to have a clean and sharp appearance. Looking good will leave a good impression on others, and help increase confidence. Besides appearance, the right tool is important to a man. Choosing the right tool not only make the work done faster, it also get the work done smarter. Based on these ideas, I narrowed down my concepts and designed a kit that correctly fits the urban man’s need.

THESIS PROJECT / NOVA ORBITS

FALL 2012 – FALL 2013

OBJECTIVE Choose a problem to solve with graphic design. Conduct extensive research and analysis over the course of a year, and master a solution that is both conceptually and visually successful.

CONCEPT Space exploration exemplifies dreams come true. Since it began, thousands of objects have been sent into space, safe travel to and from space is possible, and landing on other planets has become a reality. Watching a new spacecraft launch or seeing images taken from outer space invokes such wonderful feelings. But in 2012, the situation changed. There aren’t any space shuttles, there is no space plane, and even NASA’s budget was cut. The space program’s slow decay has widely affected our society. To focus only on the current benefit and lose interest in space exploration is to stop dreaming for tomorrow. The concept of my thesis is to analyze space exploration trends and construct a feasible solution for its future development.
