Day out Written & Illustrated by the pupils at St.Alban’s Primary School
Preface Dear Reader, The original idea of this book was to write about a character who went exploring different countries around the world. We brought the idea to our library teacher – Mrs Coveney – and together expanded the idea, making it better and better with each discussion. We then thought of including the whole school, mainly to give younger children the experience of writing a book and inspire them to carry on reading and writing in the future. The outcome is this wonderful story and we are very proud of the work that everybody has put into writing it. This was a great task as it encourages creativity and teamwork and we would recommend it to other schools. Everyone should have the opportunity to write a book, whether it is with other children or by themselves. Creativity is vital in supporting children’s learning and success throughout their lives. We are very lucky in our country to have such great facilities to be able to express ourselves. We would like to say a massive thank you to Mrs Coveney who has put in so much effort towards the making of this book. She has been very supportive of our ideas and put a lot of her own time into it. Well done to every pupil who has been a part of this journey. We hope you enjoy the book! Katie Livermore (11) and Laura Taylor (11)

Chapter one Bee Careful
Harry Potter and Mildred Hubble were arguing.
Unfortunately, Mildred came to an abrupt stop as she crashed straight into the black cape of the head teacher.
“My magic is much better than yours” said Harry, looking for trouble.
Sternly, the head teacher asked, “How should we conduct ourselves at school?”
“Well let’s see how you do without this!” said Mildred as she ran off with Harry’s wand, plaits flying behind her.
Without giving any chance to answer, she continued, “please take a seat outside my office and write me a page on ‘the importance of school rules’.”
It was World Book Day at St.Alban’s School. There was a buzz of excitement as everyone rushed through the school gates.
The head teacher readjusted her black cape and mortar board. “The bell is about to ring, Quickly now, let’s begin our learning adventures children,” she urged in a serious tone.
I watched as children in a dazzling array of colours, like a tempting meadow of flowers, streamed in through the school. I was feeling hungry! It was going to be a good day.
The doors were locked.

Chapter two Jungle Book
We were met by a sleepy leopard with yellow fur and beautiful spots.
Riley patted a very strange looking dinosaur that made a loud ‘ROAR’ and scared all the other animals away.
“Hello” he yawned sleepily, “my name is Riley. This is my pet dinosaur.”
“Come for a walk with us, it’s a lovely day” said Riley. Off we followed through the trees that went on and on, an endless carpet of soft leaves.

Chapter two Jungle Book
As we turned a corner, we were stopped by a mysterious robot who gave Riley a magical mirror. The robot said “I will help you find a magic tunnel.”
Riley bravely touched the mirror and there was a puff of smoke. As the smoke cleared, we found we had travelled into a tunnel, just as the robot had promised.
We had fun sliding around Saturn’s icy rings and we slid right up to what looked like a strange spaceship.
Riley the leopard very cautiously knocked on the door. The door was opened by a family of friendly aliens who were green with orange spots, speaking in a strange alien language.
On we travelled to the end of the tunnel. As we emerged through the other end we were greeted by a beautiful sight.
Huge round planets circled above us, stars twinkled and danced, bright in the darkness behind them. We stepped out from the safety of the tunnel on to an icy ring of Saturn. We had come all the way into the solar system.

They beckoned us through, into a spaceship full of remote controls, buttons and even toy aliens that came alive at night.

Chapter two Jungle Book
Suddenly we heard a crash like thunder!
Standing in the doorway was a mean and scary monster that smelt of mouldy cheese and rotten kiwi! The monster had the jaws of a crocodile and made loud noises that were very scary.
Lost in the centre of a black nothingness, we found ourselves spiralling fast out of space. Who could help us now?
Out of the darkness came a magnificent purple unicorn, with a red horn and wings all the colours of the rainbow.
It swooped down and we climbed upon its back as it neighed and twinkled. The monster scooped us all up and took us to a dungeon in the deepest, darkest part of the universe with spiders, rats and smelly fish. We even spotted a skeleton! We were trapped!
Losing hope, we explored the dingy space, looking for a way out. Something was glinting in the corner of the dungeon.
Underneath the skeleton, we spied an enchanted wand. Riley carefully moved the bones and picked up the wand. He pointed it straight at the mean monster.
In an instant, the monster had transformed into a walking teapot with a long trunk-like spout which looked just like it belonged to an elephant! It was a harmless thing and we laughed as we made our escape.
St Alban’s Primary School Book 2018
Riding the unicorn was like riding through a dream. Everything was a soft blur.
As the unicorn landed, a black figure in a cape and a black hat swooped down and grabbed the beautiful red horn from his head.
The unicorn vanished in a flash, and we came crashing down into Earth’s atmosphere and landed back in class at school.

Chapter four Read all About it
We landed with a thump. Towering above us were dark, grey skies. We could feel the heat of a fire and noticed a strange orange, smoky glow to the sky. Pigeons, millions of them, were obscuring our view. As we looked around us, casting a dark shadow over year 2, was the vast outline of Buckingham Palace. We were in London. It all seemed odd. People were wearing old fashioned clothes. There were no cars. The streets were narrow, with wooden houses closely crammed together. There was a newspaper on the dirty street – it was dated 1666!
As the news article was passed around the class, the flames from the fire started to creep closer towards us. The class started to run. There was an explosion. A Trivenomosaurus was circling above us, starting to dive. We stopped, frozen in our tracks. Then, as if enveloped by a huge black cape, we emerged from the darkness and found ourselves back in class.

CROWN JEWELS VANISH AMIDST FIRE CHAOS In the early hours of Monday morning, a great cry was heard from Buckingham Palace. With the dramatic backdrop of a city engulfed in flames, buildings disappearing and people fearing for their lives; the country’s most precious jewels have mysteriously vanished.
Three items have been stolen. The crown, a sceptre and an orb. All extremely valuable, worn by British kings and queens as symbols of 800 years of monarchy in our country.
Palace officials are at a loss to explain the disappearance. An eye witness claims to have seen a freak tornado circling above the palace on the night of the disappearance. He remarked “I was caught up in efforts to avert the flames in London from reaching the palace when

I spotted an odd sight. Amidst a ghoulish swirl I saw what appeared to be a three headed monster”. Another witness at the palace stated she was certain that the glittering jewels could be seen in the clutches of the monster. The precious jewels are rumoured to have been taken to ‘Spooky Island’; a place unreachable without an expert guide. A working party has been set up to travel there imminently on the dangerous mission to recover the stolen valuables.
The distraught royal family and the missing jewels
Reports of a black caped individual, wearing a hat, seen circling ‘Spooky Island’ have also been reported. Authorities are very keen to speak to this person who may have important information relating to this mystery.

Chapter five Pyramid Pyrotechnics
As our eyes started to open, we glanced around and to our amazement we were in a dark, hot space. There was a gentle golden glow around us. We looked up to a pointed roof which was a very long way above our heads. There was a strange medicinal smell in the air, of herbs and spices. We were inside the middle of a pyramid!
Underneath us was a mound of precious golden treasure, guarded by an army of mummies we seemed to have awoken from the dead. Things were starting to look pretty scary and there seemed to be no way out of the pyramid.
We saw a tunnel ahead and raced away from the mummies, taking our chances through it.

Chapter five Pyramid Pyrotechnics
We emerged into a vast cathedral-like space, in what must be the centre of the pyramid. Below us was a fiery red and orange river of hot, melting lava. The only way across was a rickety bridge which didn't look as if it could hold the weight of a small cat, let alone all of year 3!
At the entrance to the bridge was an arch. On it was an engraved message which seemed to appear magically as we approached, and then disappear as we moved away. It was written in strange hieroglyphics. Luckily Y3 had been paying attention in class and could decipher the code. It read: Crack this code to leave this place You must be quick, this is a timed race. The key is hidden under wing Of gold, not black, a beetle thing. Find the bug where Pharaohs lie Cold and painted when they die. A strange voice boomed out. It was almost as if the lava river was talking to us. The unknown voice began, “Time is short. By entering the archway, you have triggered the pyramid lock down procedure which protects its treasure from leaving this place. The walls have already begun to move inwards, and the lava level has started to rise. Act quickly before it is too late.”
A golden beetle with a key. It must be hidden inside a tomb somewhere.
We headed back through a series of tunnels. A maze inside the pyramid led to many chambers. Nothing with a golden beetle that we could find. Time was against us, the walls had already begun to move in. Just as we were losing hope, a cat wandered past us. Odd. We knew that the cat was a symbol of good luck in Ancient Egypt so we decided to follow it.
It took us into a chamber deep underground. The chamber was beautifully decorated, and inside was a single tomb. On top lay an ancient scroll, carefully placed. As we opened it a golden scarab beetle scurried out. Too fast for us to catch, we could feel our chances of escape drifting away. Just as hope was gone, the cat shot out of the chamber and returned a few seconds later, carrying the beetle in its jaws. It was indeed a lucky puss!

Chapter five Pyramid Pyrotechnics
As we recovered the key from the scarab beetle wing, we rushed back through the maze of tunnels and chambers, time against us. We were now squeezing through narrow gaps as the walls pushed against us. Back inside the centre of the pyramid, the lava level was almost touching us. We could feel the heat rising up. As we reached the arch, a keyhole appeared in front of us. We tried the key and it worked.
Immediately the walls began to push back and the lava began to sink down. Golden vines emerged from the roof of the pyramid, enough for each of us to grab one. We swung across the lava river to the other side. There, waiting for us, was a beautiful chariot. We swiftly clambered in and burst through the top of the pyramid into the hot, burning sun of the day from the gloom of the pyramid below us.
Propelled faster and faster upwards, we looked down and noticed an odd silhouette of someone in a cape, a familiar face? It emerged below us, carrying something glinting in the light...it looked like the golden beetle….but perhaps we were dreaming, as at that moment things went hazy....we woke up suddenly back in the school field where our adventure had begun.

Chapter seven Lost in Space
The world started disappearing and darkness fell. Then all of a sudden, light spread across the sky and I soon realised…..we were in space. We had landed on Saturn’s rings and were being propelled faster and faster towards the burning sun. We needed help, and quick.
We came to an abrupt stop at something called the “Inter-Galactic Border Control”. It was a very strange checkpoint, right in the middle of the solar system. A rather unofficial looking group calling themselves the ‘fire pixies’ were dressed in a uniform of sunglasses, flame coloured hair and t-shirts emblazoned with the words ‘keep cool!’ on. “Come on through”, one of them muttered, in a rather raspy voice. “good job you turned up now…few minutes ago we had drifted off to sleep on the job and let some dude through in a black cape and hat without noticing!” they laughed. “I know, it’s bad. Could cost us our border job, but they love our jokes too much to let us go!!” We looked a little bewildered, but intrigued. “Who loves your jokes?” we asked, now curious. “The blue guys over in the city. See over there?” He pointed to a strange looking place, rather like we imagined Ancient Greece may have looked, but this one was a city engulfed in flames. “They run stuff around this solar system,” the pixie went on. “You probably should avoid them though. Things have gone crazy around here lately. Someone has stolen a precious piece of the lava crystal. Probably that dude in the black cape if we ever catch him!” “What is the lava crystal?” we were beginning to get interested now.

Chapter seven Lost in Space
“Oh, it’s part of the sun, it powers the heat of the sun, holds the planets in place and controls gravity. Guess it is pretty important.”.
As we filed through the checkpoints, with very little opposition, little did we know how dangerous these jovial little pranksters really were.
One of the fire pixies, unable to control his sniggers, asked “Why did the sun go to school?”. We shrugged our shoulders, not quite sure how to act, “Because it wanted to become brighter!”. The fire pixies exploded into laughter.
We looked back and noticed the more they laughed, the brighter they became. In fact they were now all merging into one enormous bright ball of burning flames. It looked just like another sun.
As the actual sun, affected by the stolen fragment of lava crystal, was losing its powerful heat, this new sun was taking over. However, it didn’t seem to be doing quite the same job. We started to feel a little odd. We were noticing differences. One of us had developed a strange green rash which was steadily worsening. Another noticed an extra set of thumbs on each hand. Even more bizarre, one poor boy had developed a rather unattractive bulging eyeball on the back of his head!
The more they laughed, the brighter they became. This didn’t seem very appropriate given the gravity of the situation they seemed to have caused with their shoddy border control.
“I have another one, please, another one!” said a pixie, jumping up and down wildly, waving around his odd shaped arms. “Please, please, let me tell it” he pleaded.
We had to find our way back to normality, and if possible replace the lava crystal and restore order. However, this would have to wait.
We politely turned to him and listened.
“What kind of music do planets sing?”, he looked around expectantly…”Nep..tunes!” he burst out.
The Fire Pixies were now uncontrollably laughing. In fact, they didn’t stop. Now they had started, they just looked at each other and that made them erupt into laughter again. We made a swift exit through the border.

Chapter seven Lost in Space
The lava crystal is the key
Just then, a dark shadow slowly eclipsed the sun, then immediately disappeared. The sinister event plunged us all into an eerie, foreboding darkness. We shivered. A silhouette started to emerge of a dark cape and perhaps a mortar board, the outline of a stern face, a bell…..it looked very familiar. It looked like our head teacher. It looked like there was a fragment in their hands. And then, it was gone. With two out of the three fragments replaced, the planets start to realign. Things settled back down. We were being spat back out of the centre of this alien city into the darkness. As I was propelled out, I noticed a fire pixie chatting to one of the blue aliens. I buzzed in closer to overhear.

“Did you use your telepathic powers? Have you managed a direct duplicate of all their minds and memories?” asked the blue alien, eagerly awaiting confirmation.
Descended from the sun in blackness and despair Diamond crystal core hides number 3 Seeping energy through the sea
“Of course, all transfers complete and downloaded to the city hub. The switch will be successful upon the pupils’ entry into Earth’s atmosphere,” confirmed the fire pixie, all joviality now gone from his voice.
It appeared to be trying to help us to find the missing fragments of the lava crystal. All we had to do was solve the riddle. Luckily we had listened well in class and knew a little about the planets.
“A job well done. Please congratulate your team. We will arrive at location St. Alban’s School in human form and begin our work.”
“The first piece must be on Pluto” someone shouted, “and I know for certain piece number three is one of the ice giants. I think it must be Neptune.”
I tried to buzz back to warn the class as quickly as I could. I was too late. I could already see the first pupils entering Earth’s atmosphere.
Things were looking hopeful. Perhaps we would be going home. “The second piece is more challenging. It could be anywhere on the edge of space”. The strange blue aliens, who seemed to understand everything we said, immediately started to disappear, to retrieve the lost fragments.

Chapter 8 The Cabinet
What a day! As I flew past the head teacher’s office on my way to the outdoor classroom, I noticed the door was ajar. I caught a glimpse of sunlight reflecting off a beautiful display cabinet. Inside I noticed an array of some very familiar objects. There was a most beautiful unicorn horn,

a mirrored flower, a dazzling crown, a golden beetle, a rolled up scroll and a sparkling blood red crystal fragment….the missing objects. Why were they here? What use were they? These objects would give their owner enormous power. The school bell rang signalling time for all to go home. It was the end of another school day. Or was it?.....

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This book would not have been started without the fantastic initial idea from Laura Taylor and Katie Livermore who have inspired a school to write. A very big thank you for all the hard work, amazing ideas and imagination from all the pupils across the school in YR, Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4 and Y5. With special thanks for all the enthusiasm and interest you have shown in your writing. To all the teachers and teaching assistants who have nurtured the academic foundation for ideas to flow. Thank you to our head teacher, Nicola Hordell, for allowing some of our library time to produce all this wonderful imagination from our budding authors and illustrators of the future. A special thank you to Mr Ken Ashton for his generous graphic design work to turn our words and illustrations in to a book to really treasure.
