HIGH-RISE COMMERCIAL

I CHOSE THE MIDTOWN SITE, FIREHOUSE #9 WHICH IS LOCATED OFF OF CENTRAL AVENUE, IN BETWEEN EAST WELDON AVENUE & EAST COLUMBUS AVENUE ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE PHOENIX FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION. YOU WILL NOTICE THE LIGHT RAIL RUNNING ALONG CENTRAL WHICH DIVIDES THE HIGH-RISE COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS ON THE WEST AND THE MOSTLY RESIDENTIAL AND SMALL OFFICE BUILDINGS ON THE EAST NEAR THE NEW FIREHOUSE SITE.

BEFORE STARTING THIS PROJECT, I DID NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT FIRE STATIONS. IT WASN’T UNTIL OUR CLASS TOOK A FIELD TRIP AND TOURED VARIOUS FRIESTATIONS THAT I GOT A GRASP OF THE PROFESSION AND WHAT FIREFIGHTERS DO DAY-TO-DAY BESIDES FIGHTING FIRES- WHICH BY THE WAY IS ONLY A SMALL FRACTION OF WHAT THEY DO.

THE FIREFIGHTERS LIVE IN THESE CRAPPY DORMS THAT ARE A LOT LIKE WHAT YOU PROBABLY ALL REMEMBER FROM YOUR FRESHMAN YEAR IN COLLEGE. YOU KNOW THE ONES WITH THE COMMUNITY BATHROOMS AND POOR DESIGN? YES, THOSE ONES EXCEPT THE RESIDENTS ARE HIGHLY SKILLED PROFESSIONALS AND NOT EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD COLLEGE KIDS. THEY ARE SMALL, UNDERWHELMING, AND I IMAGINE TO BE QUITE SAD TO LIVE IN. I MEAN, THEIR WHOLE STORIES ARE ABOUT THEM WAKING UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AT 3AM TO RUSH OFF TO SOME KIND OF EMERGENCY (SOMETIMES VERY TRAUMATIC) AND THEN COME BACK TO GET WHATEVER SLEEP THEY CAN IN THESE HORRIBLE SPACES BEFORE THEY ARE OFF AGAIN.

F I R E STAT I O N

I STARTED MY DESIGN WITH THIS NOTION THAT THE DORMITORIES NEED TO BE BETTER, MORE LIVABLE, MORE COMFORTABLE AND MORE OF A SANCTUARY SO THAT AFTER A HORRIFYING CALL, THE FIREFIGHTERS HAVE A SPACE THAT THEY CAN PEACEFULLY REST IN. WE NOW KNOW THAT FIREFIGHTERS SPEND MORE TIME IN THEIR DORMITORIES THAN THEY USED TO BECAUSE OF THE MORE RECENT SWITCH TO INDIVIDUAL DORMS VERSUS COMMUNITY BUNK ROOMS AND ALSO BECAUSE OF TECHNOLOGY THAT MAKES IT SO THAT INSTEAD OF WATCHING WHATEVER THE CAPTAIN WANTS TO WATCH IN THE DAY ROOM, EACH FIREFIGHTER CAN GO IN THEIR ROOM AND WATCH NETFLIX OR WHATEVER THEY FEEL LIKE BINGE WATCHING THAT DAY. SO, I AM SUGGESTING THAT THE DORMITORY BECOME THE GENESIS FOR THIS IDEA THAT IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS OF THE FIREHOUSE FROM THERE THEN, IT BECAME REALLY CLEAR THAT IN ORDER FOR THE FIREHOUSE TO REALLY ENGRAIN ITSELF IN RELATING TO THE COMMUNITY, EACH RESIDENTIAL COMPONENT NEEDS TO BE TIED TO THE RESIDENTIAL COMPONENT OF THE COMMUNITY. SO RATHER THAN DESIGNING THE SPACE LIKE A CLINIC OR A HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING, MY APPROACH WAS HOW DO YOU MAKE A BUILDING THAT REALLY EXPLORES THE IDEA OF HOME.

I CAREFULLY DESIGNED THE DORMITORIES TO BE MICRO-SUITES. THEY ARE FULLY EQUIPT WITH A FULL BATHROOM INCLUDING THEIR OWN SHOWER AND SINK, FULL BED, NIGHT STAND, DESK, CREDENZA, TV AND CLOSET. WITH THAT SAID, THESE MICROSUITES ARE ALMOST DOUBLE THE SIZE OF THE STANDARD DORMS IN THE PHOENIX FIRE DEPARTMENT GUIDELINES. BECAUSE THE FIREHOUSE IS TRULY THE FIREFIGHTERS SECOND HOME, I WANTED TO MAKE IT FEEL COZY AND INVITING VERSUS COLD AND CLINICAL AS YOU SAW BEFORE. USING WARM WOODS AND A NEUTRAL PALETTE, THE SPACES ARE STRONG ON THEIR OWN BUT CAN BE CUSTOMIZED TO EACH FIREFIGHTERS AESTHETIC AND PERSONAL TOUCH. I WANTED TO CREATE AN INDIVIDUAL SPACE THAT CAN BE ENJOYED BY THE FIREFIGHTERS AND SOMEWHERE THEY GENUINELY WANT TO SPEND THEIR TIME IN. MY APPROACH TO RETHINK THE TRADITIONAL DORM IS A WELL DESIGNED SANCTUARY THE FIREFIGHTERS ARE PROUD TO CALL HOME.

I DECIDED TO TUCK MY BUILDING INTO THE FAR MOST EAST END OF THE SITE TO MAXIMIZE THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT AND ALSO BECAUSE OF THE ADJACENCY TO THE PHOENIX FIRE DEPARTMENT ASSOCIATION THE RESIDENTIAL HOME RIGHT NEXT DOOR.

I WAS INSPIRED BY THE ICONIC PITCHED ROOF OF A TRADITIONAL HOME AND COMBINED THAT WITH THE USE OF STANDING SEAM METAL ROOFING THAT CONTINUES DOWN AS SIDING TO COMMERCIALIZE THE DESIGN. THAT PAIRED WITH WHITE STUCCO AND BRICK THAT IS SEEN ON MANY HOMES THROUGHOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD CONNECT THIS FIREHOUSE TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. ADJACENT TO THE FIREHOUSE IS A PUBLIC SPACE MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR THE COMMUNITY.

SOUTH ELEVATION

FOR THE SOUTH FACING FACADE, I WANTED TO LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF WINDOWS AND PROVIDE AS MUCH SHADING AS POSSIBLE. ALTHOUGH SYMMETRICAL IN ELEVATION, THESE PLANES ARE QUITE DIVERSE AND PUSH AND PULL TO MAXIMIZE SUN EXPOSURE. THE NORTH FACADE WAS DESIGNED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE NATURAL LIGHTING WITH LARGE WINDOWS THAT BRING LIGHT INTO THE CORRIDORS. COURTYARDS AT THE CENTER OF THE LIVING QUARTERS ALLOW FOR THE NATURAL BREEZE TO FLOW THROUGH THE SPACE CREATING AN INDOOR/ OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD BACKYARD IS A COMMUNITY MULTI-USE SPACE DESIGNED TO MIMIC THE IDEA OF YOUR OWN BACKYARD. IT INCLUDES A COMMUNITY GARDEN WHERE NEIGHBORS CAN COME PLANT THEIR OWN VEGETABLES OR TEND TO OTHER CROPS PROVIDED BY THE COMMUNITY. A HALF COURT BASKETBALL COURT CAN BE USED BY THE FIREFIGHTERS FOR EXERCISE BUT ALSO FOR THE NEIGHBORS TO COME BY FOR A GAME OF “HORSE” OR 3-ON-3. BEYOND THE COURT IS AN OPEN FIELD THAT CAN BE USED FOR ANY OCCASION SUCH AS AN EASTER EGG HUNT OR AN ORGANIZED SAC RACE FOR THE KIDS, A YOGA CLASS OR FITNESS BOOT CAMP FOR THE ADULTS OR FOR HOSTING A BARBEQUE FOR NEIGHBORS AND FAMILIES ALIKE TO CONGREGATE AND ENJOY THE COMPANY OF THE COMMUNITY.

NEIGHBORHOOD BACKYARD ENTRY 28

GIVING THE FIREFIGHTERS A LARGE GYM WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME. EXERCISE IS A HUGE COMPONENT OF THEIR JOB AND MOST WORKOUT MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY ON TOP OF ROUTINE TRAINING. OFTENTIMES, WHEN THE STATION IS SLOW AND THEY HAVE SOME DOWN TIME, THEY CHOOSE TO HIT THE GYM. UNFORTUNATELY, MANY OF THE GYMS I SAW INSIDE THE FIRSTATIONS I TOURED WERE VERY SMALL AND CRAMPED. I DESIGNED AN INDOOR/OUTDOOR FACILITY THAT PROVIDES THE SPACE AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO DO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF FITNESS INCLUDING CROSSFIT, WEIGHT LIFTING, INTERVAL TRAINING, CARDIO AND HITT.

OUTDOOR GYM 30

31

NOT ONLY DID I WANT TO PROVIDE A PRIVATE SANCTUARY FOR THE FIREFIGHTERS TO BE ABLE TO ESCAPE TO, BUT I ALSO WANTED TO PROVIDE A COMMUNITY SPACE THAT ALL OF THE FIREFIGHTERS COULD GATHER IN AT THE END OF THE DAY. THE DAY ROOM, KITCHEN AND COURTYARD ARE COMBINED TO CREATE AN INDOOR/OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE THAT WOULD ALLOW THE FIREFIGHTERS TO COOK THEIR FAMILY MEALS TOGETHER, HANG OUT AND ENJOY THE FRESH AIR IN THE COURTYARD NEXT TO A WARM FIRE OR WATCH A MOVIE TOGETHER BEFORE GOING OFF TO BED. I WANTED TO RECREATE THE IDEA OF THE LIVING ROOM IN A COMMUNITY STYLE THAT COMBINES FUNCTIONALITY WITH WARMTH AND COMFORT. I WANT EVERYDAY TO FEEL LIKE THEIR FAMILY GATHERING THEY WOULD HAVE IN THEIR OWN HOME AWAY FROM HOME.
