KENDAL MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL

2024 PROGRAMME

OUR VISION IS TO INSPIRE MORE PEOPLE TO EXPLORE, RESPECT

AND REPRESENT MOUNTAINS, WILDERNESS AND THEIR CULTURES

WELCOME TO THE 2024 FESTIVAL!

Our programme begins with a theme we’ve been exploring all year—a word that shapes our choices and guides us. This year, that word is balance

For us, this brings to mind risk versus reward, courage and contemplation, effort and recovery. The holistic picture - not just the pretty bits - light and dark, truth and hope. It’s adventure itself; putting oneself out there, on the edge, above the void, to see what you can see, but not falling in the process.

Life at the Festival can feel just like a ridgeline scramble; you’re in the heady heights of the mountains, all around you is sublime inspiration, you’re poised but you need focus!

This might sound like hyperbole, but challenges for festivals at the moment are monumentous, and we are forging our own path. Festivals give the shape of the year; peak experiences of community and inspiration. Invigorating events that get us all ‘back out there’. We love combining with partners and organisations that embrace a slightly wild approach, and work with us to produce cutting edge stories for our audiences.

This year we are proud to present a kaleidoscopic range of events which will take you to all corners of the earth, and across a rainbow of human emotion.

If there’s one guest this year who encompasses everything that inspires us, it’s Lhakpa Sherpa, star of the Netflix film Mountain Queen. Lhakpa has summited Everest ten times, against a background of marital abuse, immigration, and single parent status; she is a tigress in the world of high altitude athletes. And then for something completely different, after three years of conceptual development, BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Nemone joins us alongside the Scottish Ensemble for Balance Between the Waves, a triptych of events that will take you on a journey from a music and word performance, to an immersive rave, and finally into the waters of Windermere.

Finding balance requires generosity and kindness; we all benefit from a partner at the end of the rope. At Kendal, we tie into a community to create an event that’s for everyone, by everyone. Our audience is part of our balance. You are essential to the magic! We are so grateful you have joined us to Share the Adventure

TECHNICAL GEAR DESIGNED FOR THE WINTER TRAIL.

PRESENTED BY

Balance –– a concept so central and urgent in today’s world –– is the guiding theme for this year’s Festival and its Film Programme. It’s our footing amidst chaos; the poise of a climber on a rock face, the symmetry of a summit line, and the gentle grace of one hand steadying another. As filmmakers and adventurers seek equilibrium in nature, challenge, and community, they remind us that balance is the harmony we aspire to in both our lives and our world.

For full immersion, explore our Stand-Alone films, with over 40 unique features to choose from. Or, let us curate for you; our Short Film Collections are chosen to delight, surprise, and excite. Find what resonates most with you: connect with elements like Climb, Mountain, Snow, and Water; or delve into themes such as Human Spirit and Rise Up, and test your perspective with Outside Thinkers and Outside Artists.

We are honoured that so many filmmakers choose to premiere their films at Kendal, which is repaid with packed venues and enthusiastic audiences excited to share these moments. We’re also delighted to welcome over 50 filmmakers to the Festival this year, from across the world, allowing audiences to gain insight into their work at each screening.

Dive into this year’s Film Programme and share your favourites with us! The People’s Choice Award invites you to vote for your most-loved film — details are on the opposite page.

Finally, our Festival Film Programme is digital once again, so the adventure continues beyond the Festival until 5th January 2025. Sign up for our Player, support filmmakers, and enjoy Kendal films all year round!

With ‘Balance’ at its heart, this year’s programme is both a celebration and a reminder of the delicate harmony we all strive for.

ALOHA AINA

EMMANUEL VAUGHAN-LEE, ADAM LOFTEN

When Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio was a teenager, slam poetry gave her both an outlet for her own experiences and a platform to educate growing audiences about the history of Hawaii’s colonisation. KAILAS FILM GRANT

Both Kendal and Kailas celebrate Mountains as the test-field and dreamland for humans to push their mental and physical limits. This collaborative project is to fund filmmakers to go into the world-wide mountain ranges and tell expedition and adventure stories. In 2023 two films were awarded £10k each and successfully screened at the Festival. In 2024 we awarded an overall pot of £40k to the following projects.

Supported by friends and fellow runners, Katya’s journey becomes a test of friendship, perseverance, and resilience. Facing harsh conditions and mental hurdles, she confronts fears of not doing her best and the need to adjust expectations in ultrarunning. This unsugarcoated portrayal captures the freedom and complexity of pushing physical and emotional boundaries, and the importance of the community that sustains her in this transformative journey across the Caucasus mountains.

A THOUSAND WORDS DOM BUSH

From the dusty archives of the Alpine Club in London, to the heart of the Himalayas, expedition leader Matt Sharman and renowned mountain photographer Hamish Frost set out to find the location of the first ever photograph of Everest, taken 125 years ago by the iconic adventurer Vittorio Sella. Compelled to remain true to Sella’s ethos and effort, they resolve to use 8x10 large format film to re-capture the moment. Part detective story, part road movie, Matt and Hamish will chase Sella through Sikkim to a crossroads of human spirit, asking a host of questions about what it is to be alive here and now - and why our souls crave adventure.

When the internet gives us everything at once, why should anyone go the hard way? Is the result more important than the process? Faced with a future of AI content on demand, why bother taking a photo with boots on the ground? Why spend those hours in the darkroom to make it real? In all truth, what does it mean to go on an adventure? These are big questions... maybe there are answers in the mountains.

A WORD FROM OUR PATRON ROBERT MACFARLANE

The world is out of kilter –– flying helter-skelter towards the brink. Finding and keeping balance is the work of our time. Balance is justice: scales that weigh equally, without favour or discrimination. Balance is grace: a climber poised on two raisin-sized toeholds, high on El Capitan. Balance is kindness: the hand that reaches out to steady another, to take the weight, to show the way. Balance is symmetry: the land falling steeply away to either side, as you fell-run a ridgeline and think that this is as close to flying as a wingless human could ever get. And balance is harmony: the good step taken, then another, then another –– a tightrope-path picked tentatively, hopefully, towards the possibility of living well and fairly upon this Earth.

This year’s Book Festival yearns towards balance in speech, written word, song and musical note. Come, join us: steady yourselves, find firm footing.

BOARDMAN TASKER AWARD FOR

MOUNTAIN LITERATURE SHORTLISTED AUTHORS EVENT

7 – 9pm Friday 22 Nov | Brewery Arts Malt Room | Tickets £13.50

On 17th May 1982 Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker were last seen on Mount Everest attempting to traverse The Pinnacles on the unclimbed North East Ridge. Their deaths marked the end of their contribution to a remarkable era in British mountaineering.

The Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature highlights afresh the memory of Pete and Joe, and it also seeks to do more than just that. The BT Award recognises, and rewards outstanding literature concerned with the mountain environment: books which will in turn challenge and inspire their readers, perhaps to climb or explore the world of mountains, perhaps to write or even look at the world in a different way.

Perpetuating and refreshing the challenge and inspiration of mountains through literature is one way in which we seek to remember Pete and Joe.

BERNADETTE MCDONALD ALPINE RISING

A ground-breaking examination of the contemporary mountaineering landscape. McDonald focuses on the pivotal roles played by Nepali and Pakistani climbers in shaping the future of high-altitude endeavours.

NANDINI PURANDARE & DEEPA BALSAVAR HEADSTRAP

Beautifully weaves together the rich cultural heritage and climbing traditions of the Sherpa and Bhutia community of Darjeeling. This book offers readers a captivating glimpse into the lives of the legendary mountaineers that populate the ‘Kathmandu of India’.

Congratulations to the shortlisted writers:

The winner is a book that Pete and Joe would be proud to be associated with.

In the forty-first year of the award, there were 32 entries with authors from Great Britain, Ireland, USA, Australia, Canada, India, Pakistan, Bulgaria, Italy, and Czechia.

The BT Award event will contain readings from the shortlisted authors, and they will be in conversation with Helen Mort, award winning poet, author and co-winner of the 2021 Boardman Tasker Award.

Paul Pritchard, Chair of Judges, will announce the winner of the 2024 Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature.

KATE NICHOLSON BEHIND EVEREST

A massive undertaking, it places Ruth Mallory in her rightful position as not merely the ‘wife’ of George Mallory. The book skillfully weaves Ruth’s personal struggles and contributions into the often-murky history of women in early 20th-century mountaineering.

DAVID SMART ROYAL ROBBINS

A captivating portrait of a pioneering figure in the world of climbing, detailing both Robbins’ groundbreaking ascents and his profound influence on the climbing community. Smart meticulously chronicles Robbins’ journey from a troubled upbringing to a legendary climber and visionary.

CLIVE

OPPENHEIMER MOUNTAINS OF FIRE

A captivating exploration of the intricate relationship between volcanoes and humanity. This in-depth study seamlessly blends scientific insight with some rarely told historical narratives.

GRAHAM ZIMMERMAN A FINE LINE

A gripping and introspective account of the challenges faced by the modern alpinist. The book masterfully intertwines a thoughtprovoking exploration of ambition and courage with the pursuit of meaning in the face of a changing mountain and global landscape.

SAYING NO SINCE 1960.

We say no a lot. To trends and shortcuts. To business experts and marketing know-it-alls. “Use cheaper materials, be more fashionable, give it a high-tech vibe.” No, no and no.

They told us our outdoor company wouldn’t make it if we didn’t adapt more, but here we are. Still making functional, durable, timeless outdoor equipment that you’ll want to use for decades. So no, we’re not going to stop saying no.
