WELCOME TO KENDAL! As we gather once again against the backdrop of our beautiful National Park – filmmakers, writers, adventurers, nature lovers, artists and creatives converge to create a vibrant, artistic canvas of stories, experiences, and shared humanity. Kendal has a beating pulse, and each person who contributes their creativity or attendance makes that life-blood richer, and stronger to sustain us all. Our Festival theme this year is ‘Joy’. This seems more pertinent than ever – against a world around us full of tension, turmoil and tragedy we must remember that joy can bring us balance, peace and clarity. A focus that may be required to support oneself and others to bravely confront the bigger challenges ahead. 2023 is a year of development and growth for the Festival and our associated events. We’ll see more visitors, more brand partners and charity organisations, new alliances, more films entered than ever before and more activities and outreach programmes that connect to all corners of society. Community remains at the core of what we do and ‘Kendal’ is proud to continue to be a trusted and respected platform for everybody in the outdoors. The Festival remains a true beacon of inspiration in our closely-knit gathering of outdoor enthusiasts, creatives and activists. So as the excitement starts and we open our Festival doors, we would like to thank our amazing management team and staff, our friendly army of volunteers and all the industry partners and suppliers that help make this a truly world-class event. Most of all, a huge thanks to you the Festival goer and supporter for continuing to buy tickets that help the event thrive; this support also enables us to host many more free accessible programmes to those that need it most. We wish you all a wonderful Festival and a year ahead full of good health and precious nature connections in the great outdoors. 54 BOOK FESTIVAL
WELCOME TO
KENDAL MOUNTAIN BOOK FESTIVAL Welcome to our 2023 Book Festival where authors, poets and musicians join us to share their stories, ideas and perspectives. Topical and relevant, we hope to create a space where people can connect with each other; experience events that entertain, surprise and move them. Our Book Festival Director, Paul Scully says, “Our Festival is a place where we can reflect on our relationships with nature, landscape, society and to each other. A space where people are challenged to be receptive to different ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. We hope you are able to join us, no matter who you are, in this wonderful community of words, wanderings and wonder.” This year’s theme is Joy and with over 30 events of discussions, talks and performances we hope to immerse our audiences in adventure, overflowing with uplifting optimism and full of wonder for the world. Our hosts will be in conversation with some of the biggest and emerging names in outdoor writing. All of our live events will be in lovely venues around Kendal. Journey with us as we take you from the streets of Kabul to the mighty river Tigris; from the breath and cinders of volcanoes to the flat lands of England; and from a medieval pilgrim path in Norway to the luminous beauty of moss on the wetlands of Somerset. We look forward to seeing you there! We are delighted to once again host the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature, in this 40th anniversary year – it promises to be a very special evening. A massive thanks to our presenting partner Costwold Outdoor and to our support partners Gestalten, Mountain Equipment, Timber Festival, the University of Cumbria, Abbot Hall/ Lakeland Arts and the Armitt Museum.

A WORD FROM OUR PATRON
ROBERT MACFARLANE “Joy” is the theme of this year’s Kendal Mountain Festival. This little, common word carries so much power. It comes to English from the Latin “gaudere”, meaning “to rejoice”. To rejoice is to re-juice, to be refreshed and inspired, to fill the battery back up, to have your eyes widened by wonder once again. Joy is also born of companionship and community –– and here at Kendal, where stories are told by many voices and to many ears, community is at the festival’s heart. Joy can also be the fuel of change. “Joy is my resistance”, says community leader Cherelle in the film We Are Nature, which won last year’s Rab Film Grant Award, “there is a fight happening out there, and we can’t fight it if we’re not recuperating and resting and just having joy.” Amen to that. Hope can be hard to find in the world right now, so may your experience here in Kendal be joyful, immersing you in worlds, lives and perspectives, and in stories, films and songs which will leave you awestruck, enthused and energised. Welcome to the Kendal Mountain Book Festival—and rejoice!’

BOARDMAN TASKER AWARD FOR MOUNTAIN LITERATURE SHORTLISTED AUTHORS EVENT 7 – 9pm Friday 17 Nov | Brewery Arts Malt Room | Tickets £12.50 On 17 May 1982 Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker were last seen on Mount Everest attempting to traverse The Pinnacles on the unclimbed North East Ridge. Their deaths marked the end of their contribution to a remarkable era in British mountaineering.
Perpetuating and refreshing the challenge and inspiration of mountains through literature is one way in which we seek to remember them. The winner of the Boardman Tasker Award is a book that Pete and Joe would be proud to be associated with.
The Boardman Tasker Award highlights afresh the memory of Pete and Joe, but it also seeks to do more than just that. The Award recognises and rewards outstanding literature concerned with the mountain environment: books which will in turn challenge and inspire their readers, perhaps to climb or explore the world of mountains, perhaps to write or perhaps to look at the world in a different way.
In this, our Fortieth Anniversary Year, there were 21 entries, with authors from Great Britain, Bulgaria, the USA and Nepal.
PRADEEP BASHYAL & ANKIT BABU ADHIKARI SHERPA With a narrative that focuses on an oftenoverlooked aspect of climbing literature, Sherpa takes us on a beguiling journey into the culture, folklore and of survival of the native people that live in the high Himalayas.
The award ceremony will contain readings from the authors and they will be in conversation with presenter and legendary mountaineer Stephen Venables. The judges for 2023 are Matt Fry (Chair), Joanna Croston and Paul Pritchard. They have selected the following five books for this year’s shortlist:
KATIE BROWN UNRAVELED
MERRYN GLOVER THE HIDDEN FIRES
A compelling, raw and honest memoir... Brown gives us a no-holds barred insight into her life, her struggles with mental health and eating disorders, all against the backdrop of her meteoric rise to climbing fame as a teenager in the mid-90s.
Drawing on the work of Nan Shepherd and her classic, The Living Mountain, is not an undertaking to be taken lightly and Glover doesn’t disappoint in this beautifully written and well-researched journey through the Cairngorms.
LEO HOULDING CLOSER TO THE EDGE
FAYE LATHAM BRITISH MOUNTAINEERS
This dynamic, honest and, at times, harrowing book goes the extra mile – teaching us all about the pressures of balancing a life lived in pursuit of exhilaration but also one’s own adventure, whatever that may be.
In this truly unique and thoroughly engaging short book, we are taken on a dream-like and wintry tour of F.S. Smythe’s original 1942 work, British Mountaineers. This is a thoughtful artwork as much as it is a meditation on climbing history.
The Judging Panel for the 2023 Boardman Tasker Award is:
MATT FRY (CHAIR)
JOANNA CROSTON
Matthew has worked in non-fiction publishing for over 20 years and is currently Director of International Sales at Quarto Books. As part of Joe Tasker’s extended family, he grew up with a somewhat inevitable passion for mountaineering literature and has fond memories of attending previous Boardman Tasker award ceremonies as a child. He has been fortunate to travel to many crags and mountains in the UK, Europe and beyond as part of his work and is delighted to be able to participate in the judging of this prestigious prize.
Joanna Croston grew up in Eastern Canada and moved to the Canadian Rockies in 1998. She has climbed many of the classic 11,000 ft peaks in the area and is an avid backcountry skier having toured throughout North America, The Alps, Japan, Kashmir and the Indian Himalaya. A voracious reader of mountain literature and a die-hard film enthusiast, she is the Director for the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival. Her writing has appeared in Highline Magazine, Gripped, The Canadian Alpine Journal, Mountain Life and Alpinist.
PAUL PRITCHARD In the 1980s and 90s, Paul was a globe-trotting climber and mountaineer. On winning the Boardman Tasker Award for his debut book Deep Play, he used the prize money for a world tour, ending up in Tasmania on the Totem Pole sea stack. A boulder fell and inflicted such a terrible head injury that doctors thought he might never walk or speak again. The experience gave impetus for his second book, The Totem Pole, which won him a second Boardman Tasker Award and the Banff Mountain Book Festival Grand Prize. Paul now lives in Tasmania writing, and working as a diversity and inclusion educator.

BOARDMAN TASKER AWARD 40TH ANNIVERSARY 57
“Something Good Must Come Out Of This” Celebrating 40 years of the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature Pete Boardman and Joe Tasker went missing on Everest in May 1982. Dorothy Boardman said and Hilary Boardman thought “Something good must come out of this” as they hugged in Dorothy’s hallway of the family home in Manchester. Hilary, having just been driven by Martin Wragg from the airport where she had landed from Switzerland. That day in 1982 in Dorothy’s living room, with family and friends a seed was sown for an appropriate memorial for the boys. The Award, initially known as the Boardman Tasker Memorial Prize was established in 1983, with Lord Hunt (Chair), David Cox and Ronald Faux as the initial judges. The Award was not made that year, as none of the books submitted were considered to be of sufficient merit. The first winners, in 1984, were considered to be of sufficient merit:
The Shishapangma Expedition by Doug Scott & Alex Macintyre, and Living High by Linda Gill. The first individual winner came in 1985, Menlove by Jim Perrin. Since the establishment of the award, there have been over 2,000 books entered. Each year we receive on average 25 to 35 entries, and interest in the Award is world wide. A total of 39 authors have won the award and four, Bernadette McDonald, Andy Kirkpatrick, Jim Perrin and Paul Pritchard, have won the award twice. On four occasions 1983, 1991, 2005 and 2022 a joint award was shared by two books. Interest in the Award remains high, and we frequently deal with enquiries from all over the world. Entries are accepted from January 1st until July 15th and a shortlist is profuced on or around early September, with the award being presented in November. Full details and more history can be found at boardmantasker.com

JULIE BROOK WHAT IS IT THAT WILL LAST?
CAT VINTON THE LAST OF THE NOMADS The BASECAMP Photography Exhibition 2023 Presented by Blundstone The dro (to move or go) pa (people) have roamed the Tibetan plateau for centuries, their lives inextricably connected to the land and rhythm of the ever-changing cycles of nature.Belonging to the land and not defined by borders - these nomadic pastoralists are scattered across the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya in Nepal, India, Bhutan and China. Despite their extraordinary resilience, the Drokpa are facing threats to their way of life through forced assimilation and as this remote mountain environment is impacted by the changing climate, it becomes increasingly hostile to supporting human life on the move.

CROSS LANE PROJECTS
Running throughout the galleries of Abbot Hall, What is it That Will Last? offers an insight into an extraordinary and ongoing body of work that is often created in remote places. Incorporating film, sound, photography and drawing, the visitor is invited to explore the artist’s deep and immersive relationship with the landscape. Brook’s work frequently emerges from her inhabitation of a landscape and its materials. Exposed to the full range of natural forces, these works are often transient in character, or eventually eroded by the elements.
Tickets £9 Adult / £4.50 child. Annual Pass. Free for Lakeland Arts Members.

PARTNERS & PRESS WELCOME EVENT
For the second year in a row we are proud to present Access The Best Of Kendal which includes a selection of the most groundbreaking films - the ones with all the emotion, the psyche, the full stomach-dropping, eye-popping experience. The screening includes a selection of Festival films with open captions and audio description and a selection will also have an in person BSL interpreter. In collaboration with Find it Film and Coldhouse Collective.
We are delighted that many brands and organisations choose to gather at the Festival each November in an atmosphere that sparks debate and encourages action to happen. We are holding an event prior to the Festival opening on the Thursday so these conversations can take place to progress sustainable business innovation and increasing outdoor participation.
Sunday 1pm - 5pm
QUEER SPACE AT ABOUT TIME ESPRESSO Creating a safe space and welcoming, inclusive environment for lgbtqia+ locals, visiting speakers, filmmakers, brands & organisations at Kendal Mountain Festival. Everyone is welcome in Kendal, but we understand this isn’t replicated everywhere in the adventure world. To acknowledge this and further support all of our audience we are partnering with Bobbi Fisher at About Time Espresso to ensure that there is a safe, inclusive and welcoming space for all LGBTQIA+ locals, visiting speakers, filmmakers, brands and organisations. Join us on Friday 17 Nov from 19.00 - 21.00 for a get together of LGBTQIA+ locals, visiting speakers, filmmakers, brands and organisations to meet, share ideas and create connections.
KENDAL FOR SCHOOLS Friday 17 November | Kendal Leisure Centre We are thrilled to once again extend an invitation to local schools to participate in the Kendal Mountain Festival. On Friday, over 1,600 pupils will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in extraordinary experiences. They’ll venture into the rainforest canopy with expedition leader Waldo Etherington, explore glaciers and climate change with scientist Huw James, and witness astounding bike stunts performed by Andrei Burton. Additionally, a curated selection of films will both delight and inspire these young minds. Hosted by George Lonsdale, the day promises to be a Festival highlight, offering a shared adventure that we believe will be an unforgettable experience for our youthful audience.
