Welcome to KMF 2011

Kendal Mountain Festival CIC is a Community Interest Company and a not-for-profit organisation. Any surplus is reinvested in the Festival.

Board of Directors:

Clive Allen, Robin Ashcroft, Matt Burke, Steve Scott.

A warm welcome to this year’s ‘Kendal’.

Each year the quality of the films entered into Kendal Mountain Festival’s film competition just keeps getting stronger. Digital filmmaking is evolving rapidly and it is very obvious from this year’s entry that adventure filmmakers are pushing new technology to capture the most amazing images and adventures, but at the same time still excel in being able to tell a good story. We’re particularly proud of the role we’ve played –and continue to play - in providing a showcase for both up & coming and established adventure filmmakers and that ‘Kendal’ is seen as THE mountain film festival to premiere at.

The festival’s 2011 live programme brings together an astounding assortment of adventurers – people who have made historic firsts and those who continue to push the possibilities of human endeavour. Kendal has the largest and most diverse lecture and live event programme of any mountain festival worldwide –just take a look at the programme in the following pages!

The Festival schedule can be found in the middle spread of this programme.

It’s very apparent that we are now living in challenging times and as the patron’s of the festival, we’d like to pay tribute to the hard work and commitment of the festival directors and their support team. It’s a year round job pulling these three and a half days together – not least securing the support funding and sponsorship that an event like this needs, and which are increasingly coming under pressure. The fact is that ticket sales only covers a third of the income the festival needs. So this year we’d particularly like to thank all of our support funding bodies and commercial sponsors for having the confidence in us to back this outstanding event.

But you too can play your part and we’d like to ask you to take a look at the Friends of Kendal Mountain Festival scheme on page 77, on the website or by asking at the Information Desk. Then please sign up, by doing this you can help the festival continue to develop as successfully as it has, into the future.

That only leaves it for us to say enjoy the festival and remember that above all ‘Kendal’ remains a gathering. It’s THE annual event for like minded people to get together, celebrate the wonder of wild places and adventure and also, just have a great time. We also hope the festival inspires you to seek out and enjoy your own adventures into 2012 and beyond.

Prelude to Everest IAN R MITCHELL andGEORGE W RODWAY With foreword by DOUG SCOTT Alexander Kellas, the Scottish mountaineer who was the first man to die in the quest to conquer Everest When Everest was finally climbed in 1953, few remembered Alexander Kellas, the first man to die on an expedition to the mountain in 1921, and who was commemorated alongside the renowned duo of Mallory and Irvine on the memorial at the Rongbuk Glacier. Kellas’ expeditions prepared the way for the eventual ascent of Kangchenjunga and of Everest itself, which could perhaps have been climbed earlier had his pioneering work on high altitude physiology been carried forward after his death. Award-winning mountain writer Ian Mitchell and scientist George W Rodway tell the tale of Aberdeen-born Kellas, who achieved the first ascent of several Himalayan peaks over 20,000 feet, but whose life was to end in tragedy as he became the first ‘martyr’ of Everest in 1921. Beginning in Scotland’s Cairngorms and ending in the majestic Himalayas, Kellas’ journey encompasses struggles, explorations, and discoveries which impacted mountaineering from the early 20th century to the present day, and arguably mark him as Scotland’s greatest mountaineer. Praise for Ian Mitchell: To have produced work of such significance that is also fun read an achievement. terry gifford, high reviews on Scotland’s Mountains Before the Mountaineers Praise for George W Rodway: For all who appreciate the origins and development of high altitude mountaineering, this must. john murray, irish mountain log on George Ingle Finch’s The Struggle for Everest A compulsive and fascinating account of one of the great pioneers of Himalayan climbing. DOUG SCOTT from the foreword alexander mitchell kellas who could be considered Scotland’s greatest ever Himalayan mountaineer and one of the foremost in the world during his own lifetime, is today largely neglected figure. Born in Aberdeen in 1868, there was little in his background or his early life that might have suggested that Kellas would become a leading pioneer in the Greater Ranges, exploring and climbing widely in the Sikkim and Garhwal areas, and finally dying on the initial Reconnaissance Expedition to Mount Everest itself in 1921. This pioneering biography restores Alexander Kellas to his rightful place in Himalayan mountaineering history, by describing in detail his pioneering work in exploration, his groundbreaking high altitude physiology and detailing his list of Himalayan first ascents. Extreme Alpinism, Anecdotes and Ageing!

Jerry Gore

Mountaineer, businessman, father, ex-Royal Marine - Jerry Gore’s life has been eventful to say the least. His enduring passion however, is for big wall climbing with first ascents from Borneo to the Bugaboos. Jerry talks about these experiences and how being diagnosed in 2001 as a diabetic hasn’t slowed him down in the slightest – not least on his home turf in the Ecrins.

Less well known than the Mont Blanc Massif, the Ecrins is nevertheless a truly great range with lots of potential for exploration and some epic routes. Jerry has not only made these stunningly beautiful mountains his home, but has set about his own personal odyssey to both overcome the debilitating effects of diabetes while undertaking cutting edge, exploratory climbs of great quality on three extreme walls.

The Long Hope –A Venture

With Ed Drummond, into the Best and Worst that Life May Greet Us With, Both On and Off, the Rocks.

Ed Drummond is one of the undoubted ‘Greats’ from that halcyon time in British climbing in the 1960s and 1970s. Always doing things in his own particular way as the ‘Poet Climber’, his routes are both some of the most stretching, but also the most stylish that British climbing has ever produced – his Dream of White Horses has to be on of the most poetic climbs ever.

Ed’s climbing also saw him make outstanding and horrendously committing first ascents in Yosemite and on Norway’s immense Troll Wall. However, it was The Long Hope, first climbed by Ed and Oliver Hill in 1970 – and only all-free climbed, by Dave Macleod this year – that was Ed’s masterpiece and will be the subject of this lecture.

After a period of reflection he decided on a new challenge – to confront his fears and unanswered questions – by creating the 737 Challenge.

In December 2010 Richard started a unique, multi-disciplinary challenge – a gripping 7 month expedition to climb the 7 Summits (the highest summit on each continent) and to travel the ‘last degree’ to both the South and North Poles, all against a 7 month clock. Whymper’s Scrambles with a Camera: A Victorian Magic Lantern Show

Peter Berg hosted by Julie Summers

2011 marks the centenary of the death of Edward Whymper, whose ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, (and the deaths of four members of his party on the way down) attracted attention throughout the world, bringing him praise and criticism in equal measure.

In later years, he largely devoted his life to lecturing and writing guidebooks, using magic lantern slides to illustrate his lectures.

Former Alpine Club Archivist Peter Berg has combined these images with extracts from Whymper's books and diaries to recreate the lecture 'My Scrambles amongst the Alps', first given in 1895 into a book and contemporary lecture.

THE NORTH FACE® NIGHT PART 1

Oceans of Stone

James Pearson

After bursting onto the UK climbing scene with impressive technical and bold ascents of several ‘last great problems’, James hit the headlines with the first ascent of The Walk Of Life in North Devon, initially graded E11.

James then quit the UK and moved to Austria to concentrate on sport climbing and training, but has recently returned to the UK and applied himself once again to trad climbing with spectacular results such as the first ground-up ascent of Pembroke super-route Muy Caliente (E10). Let one of Britain’s most talented and colourful rock climbers give you the inside story about his career, plus his recent trip with Alex Honnold to Chad – “oceans of stone bristling with thousands of sandstone spires and natural arches…”

Simone Moro, Denis Urubko and Cory Richards anticipated that climbing an 8,035 metre giant in the depths of the Himalayan winter might be a tad challenging, but even they had no real conception of how deep they would have to dig into their reserves of strength and motivation to keep moving upwards day after day in freezing temperatures, high winds and dangerous snow conditions.

SNOWSPORTS NIGHT With Nick Waggoner

The annual gathering for lovers of the white stuff (and we mean snow!) is nearly upon us - the legendary Snowsports Night just gets bigger and better.

This year filmmaker Nick Waggoner from Sweetgrass Productions (Signatures & Hand Cut) is coming across from the USA to present his new film Solitaire. He’ll also give an insight into what makes him the award winning snowsports filmmaker of the moment.

As Nick says “It's the people that make filmmaking interesting, and our work is about spending a long time in one place. It's more than just backcountry skiing, it's about the mountains, and the people who love them, about the light, the shadows, and the emotion that changes with their balance. A cloudy icy slope and a sunny powder line produce two different moods, two different riders, and two different filmmakers. Our films are based in this knowledge that there is more to a mountain than fresh snow and a big line; there are stories to be told. Whether in the living room of a 92 year-old miner or playing toys with an athletes 3 year-old son, it's about connecting with people who may not share your language or culture”.

To top this as always we’ll have the best selection of wintersports action and adventure films from around the world....we can’t wait!

The Life, Climbs and Evolution of a Free Climber

Lynn Hill

Lynn Hill is the iconic American climber acknowledged as one of the most accomplished rock athletes in the world. With a gymnast’s combination of power, grace and endurance, her impact on the sport is arguably second to no other woman.

Described by Ed Douglas as ‘the ultimate rock chick’, a long list of outstanding achievements culminated in 1993 in the first free ascent of The Nose on El Capitan. Writer Jon Krakauer summed it up: "Lynn Hill isn't just one of the best female climbers in the world, she is among the greatest rock climbers of all time."

The Impossible Wall

Sean Villenueva O’Driscoll, Nico Favresse, Olivier Favresse, Ben Ditto and Rev Bob Shepton

An expedition very much in the Bill Tilman mould – although the climbing was probably far harder than even he was used to.

Winners of this year’s Piolet D’or, brothers Nicolas and Olivier Favresse, Ben Ditto and Sean Villanueva, tell of their first ascent of The Devil's Brew, an 850m route on the Seagull Wall - a steep rock face on the west coast of Greenland. The expedition team accessed this wall by yacht – skippered by the Rev Bob Shepton – to both get to this remote corner of Greenland, but also to access the base of the climb from the salt water of a tidal fjord, climbing directly from deck to cliff.

The Great White Silence

Jan Faull

A hundred years ago the British Antarctic Expedition led by Captain Scott set out on its ill-fated race to the South Pole. Joining Scott on board the Terra Nova was official photographer and cinematographer Herbert Ponting, and the images that he captured have fired imaginations ever since. Ponting filmed almost every aspect of the expedition: the scientific work, life in camp and the local wildlife. Most importantly, he recorded the preparations for the assault on the Pole - from the trials of the caterpillar-track vehicles to clothing and cooking equipmentgiving us a real sense of the challenges faced by the expedition. In a special event for 'Kendal', Jan Faull from The BFI's National Archive - custodian of the expedition negatives - will show and talk about key sections of the film and talk about its digital restoration.

VISUAL ARTS 2011

Art is an integral part of Kendal Mountain Festival, giving visitors the chance to see unique mountain related experiences drawn together in the same location. All of the Brewery Arts Centres exhibition host mountain related exhibitions for over a month either side of the festival from the 14th Oct 2011 to the 4th Jan 2012.

For 2011 the galleries feature paintings by Lucy Dunnett and photography by Stuart Holmes and Dina Mufti.

Work is for sale through the BAC Box Office.

Dina Mufti - Human Planet Mountains: What Happens in Between

With a Bengali – English background, Dina was lucky enough to spend her childhood surrounded by colourful characters on her grandfather’s veranda, chewing on sugar cane and conjuring up stories about his visitors. From that veranda she planned her life as a Himalayan explorer just so she could meet the characters who lived there.

She got side-tracked for a while becoming a scientist at Cambridge University, but never lost her love of unusual people or her fascination of the mountains. Whilst at Cambridge some volcanolgists spotted her eye for a good story and employed her to film them - filming a volcanic eruption got her a job at the BBC. She has worked for BBC Radio 4 and across a range of arts, science and observational television documentaries including the award winning Human Planet, earning her a BBC award for creativity. Along the way she has met, filmed and photographed some extraordinary characters.

'What Happens in Between' is a response to the question she is most asked about her time on location for the Human Planet Mountains programme. It is a collection of scenes taken mainly on the Leica D-Lux 4, shot when the main cameras stop rolling, the film team is resting and the characters are at play.

Stuart Holmes – Who The Hell is Ice Nine?

"I was wondering...when was the last time someone had 23 outta 24 top pics by votes?" asked Padraig in the UK Climbing forums, about the mysterious talent who had uploaded a diverse range of landscape and action photographs from Canada to Everest to the Lake District.

The answer, it transpired was the publicity-shy 45 year old geologist and all-round adventurer Stuart Holmes.

As well as working as an exploration geologist for 15 years – travelling to far-flung locations throughout the world – Stuart has been keenly pursuing photography, climbing and paragliding. He temporarily packed in the ‘day job’ to spend the winter of 1996 ice climbing in the Canadian Rockies. On his return to his home in Keswick he took a diploma in travel photojournalism specialising in adventure sports and travel and contributed to a wide variety of magazines. He had his first exhibition of mountain photographs at the Theatre by the Lake, Keswick in May 2001. After numerous further foreign forays, both for work and pleasure, in such diverse places as Turkmenistan, Nepal, Patagonia and South Georgia he found himself in Tibet. With a group of friends and a small budget, he reached the summit of Mount Everest at 6 a.m. on the 30th of May 2005.

Stuart continues to live in Keswick, the town where he was brought up. “For me it’s the perfect adventure playground; I can run, bike, climb, fly and swim within this stunning landscape, all within a stone’s throw of my front door.”

Lucy Dunnett –The View From Mont Fort

Lucy Dunnett is exhibiting a series of paintings inspired by the view from Mont Fort, Switzerland, the highest peak in the Verbier region.

“At 3330m and situated in the heart of the Alps, Mont Fort is one of those peaks where the view consists of nothing but mountain peaks all around you for a full 360°. You are looking at three different countries – Switzerland, France and Italy, yet when you look at the view you completely forget that there is a world down there, hidden from view in the valleys – villages, towns, cities, cars, TVs, people…

The mountains featured in this exhibition are all visible from the top of Mont Fort. Some of them are famous peaks, and some are not so well known, but are special to me. All the paintings are from different viewpoints throughout the year.

29

The Festival aims to show the very best in mountain-based film, across the broadest spectrum. The film competition is the beating heart of Kendal, and sets it apart from other UK Film Festivals. Films are screened in ten competitive categories, with winners judged by a panel of film and mountain luminaries and – in the case of the People’s Choice prize – the audience itself.

A trophy sculpted by Andy Parkin and cash prizes up to £750 will be awarded under the following headings:

Perhaps best known as TRAIL's Mountaineering Editor and for mountain bike guidebooks, Jeremy Ashcroft has walked, climbed, and latterly mountain biked since his school days. An experienced alpinist he has climbed regularly in the Alps for over 30 years. Having summitted over half the 4000m peaks, his routes include the North Face of the Dru, the Frendo Spur, the North Spur on the Chardonnet and the North Face of the Monch. He’s also climbed in the Himalaya, North Africa and the Caucasus.

Originally trained as a Technical Illustrator, in the late 1980s he wrote and illustrated the first ever mountain bike guidebooks, and at the same time developed a way of accurately illustrating mountains in perspective. His mapping skills were employed by TRAIL for their first edition and he’s been with the magazine ever since. He is now the magazine’s Mountaineering Editor. He also writes for The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Times, Mountain Biker Magazine and broadcasts regularly for the BBC on mountaineering matters.

The Adventure Film Academy lies at the core of our training and development programme and takes place in the run up to the festival. The course is run by leading filmmakers who have all worked on major adventure film and TV productions, their credits include Touching the Void, The Great Climb, Wildest Dream, The Edge, Wilderness Walks and Die Another Day.

Think ‘Dragon’s Den’, but for independent filmmakers. Making the film is the easy bit, it’s selling it to distributors which is the real challenge. If you know how to make film, have an idea and are looking for a commercial opportunity this is your opportunity to pitch your idea to established production companies. There are no guarantees, but you never know. This event will take place on Fri 16 Nov 2012. Simply sign up to our eNewsletter through our website to find out how to put in a ‘Pitch’ to this exciting event.

A Route for All Seasons

Directed & Produced by Val Morgan Keswick Mountaineering Club marked its 10th anniversary with a mass ascent of the classic Lakeland rock route Corvus. Undeterred by the Cumbrian midsummer weather, club members made a beeline for Borrowdale armed with midge repellent, waterproofs and a filmmaker. The end result is a film that captures and celebrates the camaraderie, tenacity and sheer enjoyment involved in climbing this classic route so frequently taken for granted.

A Life of Climbs: Little Chamonix

Directed & Produced by Simon D Gee

Little Chamonix, rising out of the Borrowdale Valley, is one of the Lake District's most popular routes, but like all great climbs it is wrapped in folklore, events and characters as big as the route itself. In the film we follow a typical ascent in the 40's through to the present day. With it's warming, human and playful style the film captures the essence of the climbing but will leave you seeing the route in a different light.

Islands: Traditional Tales of Lakeland Climbing

Directed & Produced by Dom Bush

A three part film, giving an insight into the world of hard traditional ascents in the birthplace of rock climbing, the English Lake District. With sport climbing and bouldering gaining popularity, this film provides a deep and sometimes comical perspective on the great British trad climbing tradition.

A sensitive and cinematic documentary film, that represents the Lakes and its characters in a simple and poignant way; featuring first ascents and hard repeats from Mike Przygrodzki, Stuart Wood, Adam Hocking and James McHaffie and interviews from Dave Birkett and Leo Houlding.

Towers of the Ennedi

Directed & Produced by Renan Ozturk, Jimmy Chin, Tim Kemple

Follow climbers Mark Synnott, Alex Honnold and James Pearson as they travel across the roadless, windswept deserts of northeastern Chad. Basing their expedition on nothing more than a few photographs and rumours of a promised land with countless unclimbed sandstone towers, Mark's insatiable thirst for adventure and first ascents leads the small crew deep into the spectacular landscape of the Ennedi desert. In search for unclimbed sandstone towers, the team finds much more than climbing in this film about risk and the arc of a climber's career.

The Long Hope

Directed & Produced by Paul Diffley

St John's Head on the island of Hoy is a wild and remote 1000 foot sea cliff. It was first climbed in 1970 by Ed Drummond and Oliver Hill. Now, 40 years later Dave Macleod is setting out to climb the cliff in a single day, finishing with a new desperately hard final pitch up the headwall. The film will also follow Ed Drummond, now in his sixties and suffering from Parkinson's disease, as he makes a pilgrimage back to St John's Head to look upon the route one last time.

Linea Continua

Directed & Produced by Herve Barmasse

Four generations, one sole purpose: going to the mountains in search of adventure, again and again! The Barmasse family of Valtournench: mountaineers, alpinists, explorers and mountain guides of the Matterhorn. It was on this very 'Gran Becca', as the Val D'Aostans call Cervino, that on the 17th of March 2010 spanning two generations, father and son tied in together. Their aim was to climb a couloir, which plunges for 1200 metres towards the base of the South face of the Matterhorn. An old project, attempted 24 years previously by Marco's father, taken up on this day by Marco and his son Herve. A difficult route, defined by some of the greatest alpinsts of the 1980s as 'one of the last projects in the Alps', it still remained incomplete in 2010.

Patagonia & Nurture Lakeland

Patagonia’s ‘Our Common Waters’ campaign finds Lake District link

Each of us uses an Olympic-size poolful of water (2.5 million litres) a year. Much of this is our share of industrial production and consumption; the water used to make our stuff. So it’s important to keep an eye on what businesses do to meet the challenges of water scarcity and pollution. Patagonia aims to measure how much water goes into every product it makes, and to begin to reduce it.

Our Common Waters, Patagonia’s new campaign, is about balancing human water use with the needs of the environment. The more water we waste, the more habitat we destroy. The more we pollute our streams and lakes, the harder it is for animals and plants to survive.

No more is this true than in the English Lake District, where our beautiful waters are under threat from excessive nutrients (phosphates). Conservation charity Nurture Lakeland is working hard to raise awareness of how phosphates, which cause algal blooms, get into the lakes.

Ruth Kirk of Nurture Lakeland says, “Phosphate comes from a variety of sources including agriculture and sewage, but what we use to wash our clothes and dishes also has an impact on our lakes. We want to help people make the link between what they put down the plughole and what happens when it washes into the water.”

Phosphates are used in detergents to ‘soften’ the water but Cumbria is already a ‘soft’ water area. By switching to one of the phosphate-free products on the market you can help reduce the amount of nutrient entering the lakes.

Go to the Love Your Lakes website for more information including a downloadable fact-sheet with advice for lake users and a list of phosphate-free products you can buy. www.loveyourlakes.org

Bowmore

Nature, it seems, is constantly competing for Islay. On the one hand, you have the mellow, warming influence of the Gulf Stream. On the other, the icy winter gales that drive the salt spray far inland, saturating the peaty soil before drying it with its seaweed-infused breeze.

It’s fitting therefore that this island of contrasts should produce some of the most robust, yet refined Single Malt whisky you will find anywhere.

Bowmore’s celebrated Single Malt whisky has been distilled on this magical island ever since 1779. The first distillery on Islay, there are those who would say it has never been bettered. And we’d be bound to agree.

The Vats Bar offers an ideal meeting and drinking place as well as light meals and refreshments throughout the Festival. By far the busiest bar in Britain over the KMF weekend, it also doubles as one of the best rest stops on the Festival circuit. Come in and try our local and guest beers and one of our famous pizzas while you peruse the event programme.

Fri & Sat: 12 noon – 2am (the next morning!)

Thu & Sun: Bar Open 12 noon – 11pm

The Intro Café

The Intro Café and Bar offers visitors another great stopover point for fast fuel and drink. It’s a great alternative to the Vats, Grain Store and Warehouse.

The Intro Café/Bar serves coffees, teas, sandwiches, chocolate, cakes, wines and beers throughout the day. It is open whenever the Brewery is open during the festival...

Breakfast baps available 8-10am.

The Warehouse Café

The Warehouse Café is a super-chilled, relaxed lounge where you can slurp a cappuccino or quaff a pint of pilsner while munching on a locally-made cake or fresh scone… Whatever mood you’re in when you arrive, you can’t help but relax in the cosy atmosphere of the Warehouse.

The Warehouse Café will be open all weekend (although occasionally in use for functions and ticketed events).

The Shackleton Tent will be erected outside the main Brewery entrance, serving tea and coffee and hot and cold food throughout the weekend. Also serving a wide range of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

Fri: 6pm – 1am (the next morning!)

Sat: 3pm – 1am (the next morning!)

Sun: 10am – 7pm

Other Fuelling Stations:

Other locations for great Festival grub away from the Brewery…

The Castle Dairy, Wildman Street

Part of Kendal College's Arts & Media Campus and neat THE BOX venue, Castle Dairy is a restaurant and art gallery: staffed by Kendal College apprentices, it is open for luncheon and dinner six days per week.

Kendal MRT Special Brew

If you’re up for a couple of pints over the weekend make sure you try the Hesket Newmarket Brewery’s 'Kendal MRT Special'. Created especially for the Festival, every pint sold donates 20p to Kendal Mountain Rescue. Given that last year saw a record number of pints consumed, let’s try for a new record – it’s in a good cause!

Sandwiches, soup, cake, drinks and a friendly service at this Festival venue.

Kendal Town Hall

As always you will find coffees, teas, sandwiches, cakes and beers in the Town Hall – this year served from the back of the auditorium (Main Hall).

Costa Coffee @ K Village

Refuel with Costa's excellent range of drinks and snacks. Open 9am to 7pm.

Cumbria, a great place to grow up!

At Cumbria County Council we want to make sure our county is a great place to live for people of all ages. So, county councillors on the South Lakeland Area Committee are supporting lots of projects which are helping young people learn, travel and have their say.

Youth council gets the vote

Under 18s may not get the vote, but we know they have a lot to say about the things that matter to them.

So, in partnership with Brathay Trust we’re helping young people start up a youth council in South Lakeland, so they can make their voices heard in local politics.

If you are interested in joining, contact Nathan Davies at Brathay Trust on 07739 646 143 or email nathan.davies@brathay.org.uk

Mountain festival films are ‘summit’ special for South Lakes pupils

We are proud to support Kendal Mountain Festival’s work to educate young people in South Lakeland

about our amazing outdoors.

We’re funding two events through the Festival this year, where pupils in South Lakeland can watch inspiring films and hear from guest speakers on big issues like culture, the environment and wildlife.

Aged 5 to 18?

Ask at your local library or go to: cumbria.gov.uk/a2bnow for details

Get the freedom to travel - for less!

Young people in South Lakeland can travel for less with a discount bus travel card funded by county councillors in the district.

The A2BNoW card costs £5. It lets you travel anywhere in South Lakeland and to Barrow, Kirkby Stephen, Keswick, Lancaster and Penrith for just £1 for a single journey, or £1.80 return.

A2BNoW card user Freya Wise says: “It has saved me a lot of money as I have just turned 16 and I would have had to pay full fare. I would definitely recommend it!”
