A BIG WELCOME TO KENDAL MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL 2017!

“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.”

That’s what Robin Williams believed, and it’s a belief we share in. Authors, filmmakers, all of us have the power to change opinion.

At Kendal, we’re lucky enough to work with filmmakers and adventurers who are passionate in their work, and its ability to influence actions. We share that passion. And in a world of ever-increasing change, we recognise we can also play a role in shaping opinions.

The truth is that we cannot continue the way we are. This earth is a finite resource, and we are abusing it. We might feel powerless, but people can change, people can make a difference, and the best place to make a start is to examine yourself and your own actions.

That’s why we’re making changes at this year’s Festival, both visible and behind the scenes. We’re working in partnership with the University of Cumbria to develop a new, sustainable model of operation and we have a PhD student on board, Seonaid Lafferty, to help drive this forward. We’re reducing plastic use and working with venues on recycling. Increasingly we’re choosing to work with partners such as Columbia, Patagonia, Hydro Flask and others to create actions and messages – even entire lecture tours – that influence opinion. And, of course, we’re championing inspirational content from filmmakers and athletes.

We hope that you will be inspired to help us make Kendal a model of sustainability, and equally motivated to make changes in your own life. As Jonathan Bamber, alpinist and scientist, recently wrote in The Alpine Journal on glacier change; “Time is rapidly running out for us to implement affordable and palatable mitigation strategies. We all have choices. Our future on the planet depends on those choices.”

Have a great Festival and we thank you and our fantastic sponsors (especially our presenting sponsor, Columbia) plus supporters, funders and the hundreds of wonderful volunteers for your vital support.

THE BOARDMAN TASKER AWARD FOR MOUNTAIN LITERATURE

13.00 –17.45 FRIDAY 17 NOV

BREWERY ARTS CENTRE - MALT ROOM

The Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature is THE premier mountain literature award worldwide and commemorates the lives of Pete Boardman and Joe Tasker who were lost on the North East Ridge of Everest in 1982. It is awarded to the author of an original work, which has made an outstanding contribution to mountain literature. The afternoon, which is hosted by mountaineer and author Stephen Venables, will include interviews with and readings from authors and, of course, the nail-biting wait for the winner to be announced.

The authors present for the award will be Tommy Caldwell, Rob Collister, Ed Douglas, Christopher Nicholson and Bernadette McDonald.

TICKETS £12.50

The Push by Tommy Caldwell

A candid, bold and compelling book which doesn’t shy away from delving into psychoanalytic territory. A fascinating insight into big wall free climbing and the unexpected challenges that characterise a life in sport.

Days to Remember by Rob Collister

A thoughtful, varied and highly literate book, evoking journeys in mountain landscapes that are often solitary, but seldom lonely. There’s a sense of honesty and humility in Rob Collister’s prose and his reflections on life as a mountain guide.

The Magician’s Glass by Ed Douglas

A finely crafted set of essays exploring climbing controversies, failures and the impact mountaineering has on local communities. Ed Douglas trains his keen eye on some of the most celebratedand infamous - stories and personalities in the climbing world.

Night Naked: A Climber’s Autobiography

This first account of Erhard Loretan’s achievements in English is well paced, characterised by a, lively, thoughtful choice of vocabulary, interesting figurative language and self-deprecating, ironic humour.

Among the Summer Snows by Christopher Nicholson

Lyrical and elegaic, this debut is a tender account of an unusual fascination with the remaining snows of the Scottish Highlands. Nicholson offers us a wry, self-aware take on the relationship between humans and the changed (and changing) natural world.

Art of Freedom by Bernadette McDonald

An accomplished biography of one of the greatest alpinists of all time. ‘Art of Freedom’ is a profound and subtle profile of one of the climbing world’s most complex and reclusive mountaineers, Voytek Kurtyka.

BREWERY ARTS CENTRE - THEATRE

Pete Whittaker and Tom Randall (aka The Wideboyz) have already spent many weeks down at The White Rim in Utah, finding and climbing huge roof climbs. But they still have the feeling that they are only just scraping the surface.

These sandstone roofs offer some of the most exciting and daunting crack projects in the world. Pete & Tom’s view is that existing routes are still way off current sport climbing standards, and reckon there is little excuse for this. It’s just a matter of motivation…

Pete and Tom will be with us, fresh (!) from their latest exploits in Utah. Expect tall tales and even wider cracks.

WORLD FILM PREMIÈRE BERGHAUS DRAGON’S BACK RACE

17.00 – 18.00 FRIDAY 17 NOV

BREWERY ARTS CENTRE - THEATRE

The legendary Dragon’s Back Race is a 5-day, 315km journey across the spine of Wales, with 15,500m of ascent across wild, trackless, remote and mountainous terrain.

The original 1992 Dragon’s Back Race was won by legends Martin Stone and Helen Diamantides, and ever since it has been whispered about with a mixture of awe and trepidation. Its reputation had reached legendary status with fell, mountain and ultra-runners the world over by September 2012 when the second race took place. With further races in 2015 and 2017, the Berghaus Dragon’s Back Race is now respected internationally for its ‘toughest mountain race’ status.

The 2017 race proved to be as hard as ever, with high mountains and high temperatures to contend with. We host the World Première of the 2017 Dragon’s Back film, which follows teams from across the spectrum to record their reallife experiences, good and bad…

In association with Berghaus.

TICKETS £7.50

ADAM ONDRA

18.00 – 19.30 FRIDAY 17 NOV

KENDAL TOWN HALL

The problem with writing stuff about Adam is, the moment you think you’re up-to-date, he goes and does something bigger and better.

Adam’s recent first ascent of Silence, his long-term project at the Flatanger cave in Norway, is the first route graded 9c and the hardest sport climb in the world. The three existing 9b+ routes in the world were also put up by Adam. And he doesn’t just do single-pitch. Last November Adam turned up in Yosemite, having never climbed on granite before, and dispatched the Dawn Wall free in seven days.

So is Adam the best climber in the world right now?

Many would say so; join us to decide for yourself!

In association with Black Diamond.

TICKETS £12.50 / £8.50 (U18S)

The film looks retrospectively, from his rock climbing days in the UK through to visionary ascents on the high peaks of the Himalaya and shares the remarkable and poignant life of one of the world’s best-known mountaineers – Sir Chris Bonington. Joining us at this European Film Premiére will be Sir Chris himself, plus filmmaker Keith Partridge. In association with Berghaus.

Climbing over five days, they summited via the route dubbed ‘Impossible Star’. Fanny will relive this, and other significant ascents she has enjoyed.

Andy Houseman has completed many expeditions to the Greater Ranges, always opting to go light and fast. It’s a style Andy strongly believes in and has resulted in success (and a lot of failures!) on new routes and significant repeats in Alaska, Peru and Nepal.

National Trust regional curator for the Lake District, Harvey Wilkinson asks what is a cultural landscape and how does climbing history and bouldering venues such as The Bowder Stone reflect our changing attitude to nature?

The Bowder Stone is a huge and solitary rock, which has stood sentinel in Borrowdale since the Ice Age. From its earliest literary references the stone has been an object of curiosity and fascination, and could be viewed as a microcosm of the wider discovery and objectification of the Lake District.

WHERE THE WILD WINDS ARE

16.30 - 18.00 SUNDAY 19 NOV

BREWERY ARTS CENTRE - MALT ROOM

In his new book Nick Hunt writes about walking the invisible pathways of Europe’s local winds, to discover how they affect landscapes, cultures and psychology across the continent.

The Helm, Britain’s only named wind, led him to Cross Fell on the bleak uplands of the Northern Pennines, in the footsteps of Cumbria’s fearsome border reivers and the demons believed for centuries to inhabit the air. The freezing Bora led him three hundred miles from Trieste through Slovenia and down the Croatian coast, from the stony emptiness of the Karst plateau to a blizzard on a Balkan mountain. His final walk traced an ancient pilgrims’ path in the south of France on the trail of the Mistral: the ‘wind of madness’ that animated and tormented Vincent Van Gogh.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR CLAIRE CARTER

This year at Kendal Mountain Festival we will showcase imagination at the heart, and at the edges of mountain culture. We have looked for adventurers finding new outdoor playgrounds, building new tribes, or breaking down the barriers between them. Join us as we focus on the creativity that we believe is at the core of mountain culture; that compels us to strive to protect our world and the potential for adventure.

We invite you to view nine collections of imagination, curated to take you on a diverse cinematic adventure. In addition, we have three programmes dedicated to Rock, Mountain Ice, and Snow. Then there are our stand-alone screenings; ‘feature films with friends’. These one-off events are what cinema is all about; an opportunity to share an intimate moment with a film and its creators. We are also thrilled to introduce dementia friendly and parent & baby friendly screening sessions; creating new avenues of access ’Imagination’ at Kendal Mountain Festival.

We identify as runners, but in doing so, we must fully accept the reality of what that means. There will be hard miles, and the miles that fly: we will savour success, sweet with celebration and the days when tired mind and broken body refuse to countenance our dreams. To be a runner is to be all of this.

ADAPTION BANGLADESH: SEA LEVEL RISE JUSTIN DESHIELDS*

The “new normal” of global climate change is, generally, a harrowing reality to contemplate. Cultural anthropologist Alizé Carrére helps us see, however, that it does not need to be a reality devoid of hope. In Bangladesh — the most densely populated country in the world and one that will bear a disproportionate share of the impact of global climate change –Carrere shows us the kind of resilience, flexibility and innovation that will be required for the survival of our species.

EUROPEAN FILM PREMIÈRE THE FROZEN ROAD

BEN PAGE*

Shot and edited whilst cycling around the world, this short film charts Ben’s winter journey into the Canadian Arctic. Compelled by Jack London’s assertion, that ‘any man who is a man can travel alone’, he sought an adventure of perfect solitude. The film is an honest reflection of his solo trip; of the wonder, terror and frustration he experienced when riding through the unforgiving emptiness of one of the world’s ‘last great wildernesses’.

Hailed as one of the most influential climbers of all time, Fred Beckey was the original ‘dirtbag climber’; one who abandons societal norms and material comforts in pursuit of a nomadic mountaineering lifestyle.

Through the 1950s and 60s, Beckey shattered records with an unparalleled string of first ascents, bushwhacking epics and pioneering new routes thought impossible. He burned bridges, eschewed fame and thrived as a loner so his only obligation would remain conquering the next summit. Beckey also authored 13 seminal books that still act as blueprints for new generations of climbers. Sadly Fred passed away just weeks before this year’s Festival, so this film stands as a memorial to a unique talent.

13.00 - 17.00 FRIDAY 17 NOV KENDAL TOWN HALL INVITATION ONLY EVENT

Moving image is the world’s connective tissue; with film we connect audiences to issues and ideas beyond their imagination. ‘The outdoors’ is swiftly becoming a platform and metaphor for social and environmental change.

What does this mean for the individual filmmaker, outdoor brand, platform or government department trying to get their message out?

Imagination is just the start, commitment and action need to follow on. How is this happening in 2017, what is changing, what is growing? How can we imagine ourselves ahead of the curve, in time to be really imaginative!

We are delighted that the Festival’s industry networking event returns for its fourth year with an international gathering of filmmakers, photographers, brands, media and industry experts. Supported by Channel 4 and the OIA, the summit will focus around the theme of ‘imagination’.

KENDAL MOUNTAIN FILM SUMMIT 2017

IMAGINATION AT KENDAL MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL

According to stories, mountain ranges and their summits were one of the first spaces we ventured into to test ourselves and our imagination; to be inspired by the environment and our ability within it. But the most memorable stories are all too often told and heard by the powerful and the privileged. Though bright and spirited, at its roots mountain culture can be seen by some to be patriarchal and colonial.

The wider world has begun to acknowledge the benefit and individual right of all people to access nature; for individual development, preventative healthcare and as an act of community. To contribute to inspiration and participation, outdoor culture must highlight the stories of all those who find adventure in their surroundings and form tribes of expression. By celebrating these stories in parallel, Kendal can build identification between the tribes. A climber is not so different from a student who scales a skyscraper. A skater carves a street as a skier shoots a couloir. The more empathy we have between different communities, the greater the collective imagination. The afternoon will see a series of presentations and films, that challenge the concept of imagination and its interpretation within the genre of outdoor filmmaking.

Film Active is Kendal Mountain Festival’s youth film programme with the aim of encouraging young people to share their outdoor adventures online and at the Festival.

Film screenings at Kendal is at the heart of what we do - taking us on journeys of discovery and allowing us to share the adventures of athletes and explorers in the most far flung corners of the world. However we also believe that there are stories that are worth sharing found closer to home and through the eyes of the young; stories that we would like to believe got their spark of inspiration from the Festival.

Therefore we are passionate about offering a platform for share these stories through Film Active. A platform that allows films to be seen on the big screen; films that inspire young people’s confidence and knowledge of filmmaking and in doing so inspire others to engage in outdoor and adventure activities.

The competition is free to enter, with the winning films being shown as part of the Family Adventure Film Programme on the Saturday and Sunday.

WELCOME TO KENDAL MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL’S NEW LITERATURE OFFERING KENDAL MOUNTAIN LITERATURE FESTIVAL

New for 2017, the Kendal Mountain Literature Festival: a packed programme of authors, covering poetry, fiction, non-fiction, biographies, essays and spoken word, there truly is something for all tastes and ages.

We are certain you will be entertained and inspired by the diverse mix of authors we are bringing together across nonfiction, fiction, poetry and art within the ‘Outdoor’ genre.

Let us also take this opportunity to thank our new patron, Robert Macfarlane for his unwavering support and inspiration and our event sponsors, funders and partners; who share our vision of creativity, imagination and the anticipation and inspiration that awaits our audiences.

All of the events are listed in this programme (look out for the icon!).

For full details, pick up a Literature Festival programme from the Basecamp Village info desk, box office or any of the venues.

A WORD FROM OUR PATRON ROBERT MACFARLANE

““We are now in the mountains and they are in us – kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver”, wrote John Muir in 1911.

Over a century later, and mountains are even more deeply in us – drawing millions of people to them each year in search of adventure, enlightenment, beauty, wonder, wildness – and nerve-quivering fear.

As the virtual world consumes more of our time and attention, and as environmental crisis deepens around the globe, so our encounters with mountains and the natural world grow ever more vital. The stories we tell about the landscapes we live in and the places we love, are crucial ways of grounding ourselves in these uncertain times.

I am so proud to be a patron of the new Kendal Mountain Literature Festival – a celebration and exploration of our stories of place. I love the Lake District, the mountains – and all that this Festival stands for. Its great theme is that of imagination’s relationship with landscape – and its great vision is to bring about participation by means of inspiration. So please come and join us here in Kendal, to launch this Festival in its first year.”

We use materials ranging from cotton to carbon fibre and our markets are as diverse as fine art and aerospace.

Based just outside Kendal we’re a sixth generation family business that has prospered for over 170 years. But we still feel young – thanks to an outstanding culture of innovation and a continuous commitment to attract the best new talent from near and far.

BRITAIN’S BREATHING SPACES: NATURE WRITERS SHARE THEIR FAVOURITE HIDEAWAYS

The great swathes of British countryside under national park status have long provided a rich source of inspiration to authors. Here, landscape and nature writers from the 2017 Kendal Mountain Literature Festival reveal the places that stoke their imaginations

ROBERT MACFARLANE

The Loch of the Coire of the Lochan, is a secret place even by the standards of the Cairngorms. It lies cupped on the northwards shoulders of Braeriach, so guarded by the landscape that it cannot be seen until you are almost upon it. In winter it freezes over; in summer its surface is gold-speckled with millions of grains of heather pollen. One year I swam there in warm sunlight in September, then walked from shore to shore across its ice in November. The walk to Loch Coire an Lochan is a serious expedition into remote country, and not - as the writer Nan Shepherd put it - “to be undertaken lightly”. But to reach it is at least as special as stepping on to a summit.

KAREN LLOYD

I live right on the edge of the Lake District in Kendal and regularly walk the area, especially when I was writing my book, The Blackbird Diaries. The south lakeland is characterised by dramatic scars. We can walk from our home to Cunswick Scar, and from there a panoramic view of the Lake District opens up and you are surrounded by hills, from the lowland hills all the way up to the mountains. Another walk I enjoy is up to Scout Scar that looks over the Lyth valley. It’s great to watch the kestrels hanging about on the up currents of air at the edge of the scar.

HUGH WARWICK

Dartmoor speaks to me deeply and it is a complete mystery why –I have no connection with it, but every time I visit I feel my heart ease. When I was writing Linescapes, I visited Dartmoor to find the reaves – the bronze age field systems. These reaves became the hedgerows and the dry stone walls, then the borders to the green lanes, and finally the road network of this country, so they are the ancestors of our infrastructure – and today they are only visible on Dartmoor. I visited when there was a solar eclipse and had a moment on Combestone Tor. As the eclipse happened, the whole environment changed – the skylarks grew silent, you could hear the river roaring in the distance, and in the corner of my gaze the reaves appeared. It was an astounding experience.

MARK COCKER

The Peak District is the landscape on which I’m fixated. People think of it as an undulating landscape, but it has left me with a lifelong love of open landscapes where you have vistas for large distances. I love the way in which the land is open and expansive. There’s the high plateau gritstone moors and the intimacy and fertility of the limestone areas. Ruskin saw the railway line that runs between Buxton and Bakewell as a kind of violation of the wilderness – but the irony is that the very same railway is now the fundamental point of access by many people into this amazing landscape. In a curious way, that insertion of a linear human structure into the series of dales is a wonderful interplay of the manufactured and the natural.

NICK HUNT

I owe Dartmoor a debt of gratitude, because it was on the moors that I learned to hike. The tors are my favourite spots there. They are beacons on the landscape, points you naturally walk towards –and at the top you might find a temporary shelter from the wind, a few other hikers or wild Dartmoor ponies huddling there. Every tor is unique, with its own distinct personality. The names have an evocative, fairytale quality: Great Mis, Rippon, Bowerman’s Nose, Kes, Belstone, Hound. And once you descend from the moor you find yourself in the deep wooded valleys that always come as a shock after the openness – following the river Teign or the river Dart itself feels almost like being in a jungle, filled with trees and birdsong.

UELI STECK 1976 – 2017

Sadly, given the nature of mountaineering, it’s not uncommon for us to reach November and find ourselves mourning the loss of one or more of our heroes. However, for us all at Kendal, we were stunned with the news at the end of April of the tragic death of Ueli Steck on Nuptse. Of all the people who might have lost their lives, Ueli seemed the least likely. His speed, control and mastery of the mountain environment seemed to make him invulnerable.

It might be presumptuous, but we liked to think of Ueli as a friend of the Festival. He had visited us on several occasions, each time acting as the complete antithesis of the mountain star.

WHO ELSE WOULD STEP OFF THE PLANE, ARRIVE IN KENDAL & IMMEDIATELY LINE UP FOR THE TRAIL RUN?

Humble, easy to approach, genuinely interested in others, and just happy to have a good time. Who else would step off the plane, arrive in Kendal and immediately line up for the trail run? It wasn’t a competitive thing - Ueli just wanted to join in and experience the Festival with like-minded souls. Then a couple of hours later, he was speaking in front of a rapt audience of 900.

His career is full of mind-bending climbing achievements, accompanied by instances of typical Ueli self-deprecation. He soloed the Intégrale de Peuterey, the longest ridge traverse in the Alps at 4,500m. Afterwards, he thought about calling someone to pick him up, but ended up walking home because it was a nice evening.

AFTER SOLOING THE INTÉGRALE DE PEUTEREY, HE WALKED HOME BECAUSE IT WAS A NICE EVENING.

Then in Scotland there was the time he strolled up several high-standard routes on the Ben with Jon Griffith. Apparently he had no idea what routes he’d climbed, but just said he’d had a great time.

Last spring, Ueli returned to Everest with a grand plan. Acclimatising, he wrote on Facebook: “I love it, it’s such a great place here.” Seemingly on an impulse, he headed for Nuptse for further acclimatisation; hours later, his body was discovered at the base.

Our thoughts are with Ueli’s wife, Nicole, and the many people - alpinists and armchair climbers alike - whose lives he touched.

CAN YOU SPARE SOME TIME TO COMPLETE A SURVEY WITH A CHANCE TO WIN #KENDAL17 MERCHANDISE?

Kendal Mountain Festival aims to become a ‘Beacon of Excellence’ in festival sustainability.

To achieve this aim Kendal Mountain Festival is collaborating with the University of Cumbria and Eco-innovation Cumbria to support research that will build on our current ethos for sustainable use of natural resource, and place sustainability at the heart of the festival planning process.

Alongside on-going work that will assess the Festival organisation, we would also like to gain a greater understanding of the behaviour and attitudes of the Festival’s wider community; visitors, local partners and sponsors.

Kendal Mountain Festival’s team member Seonaid Lafferty is looking to recruit ‘Sustainability Ambassadors’ to share their views and Festival experiences.

With the support and help of the outdoor community, we want to build a sustainable Kendal Mountain Festival that champions’ environmental and social sustainability, helping to set and achieve the highest standards of innovation, inclusivity and creativity.
