A BIG WELCOME TO KENDAL MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL 2019

We are thrilled to welcome you with open arms and open hearts to Kendal 2019. Our theme this year is Openness, and we are ready to throw open the Brewery doors and get going!

It really is a global time to Share the Adventure; to be open-minded and listen to the many stories and opinions out there. So this year, at Kendal, we are embracing this mindset. Our speakers, filmmakers, writers, athletes and adventurers embody this curious outlook, as do our audience.

It’s incredible to have such an international gathering every year to experience ideas, art, stories, music, dancing, and most of all, adventure in the best possible setting.

So let’s begin! We have been pretty open this year ourselves; listening to what you think of the Festival, and making sure the event itself is open to as diverse an audience as possible. We’ve adapted so price isn’t a barrier to watching films with us, and we’ve programmed to encourage you to reconsider your own barriers (certainly not age – watch the ‘Age is No Barrier’ collection!) We’ve consulted young people on how we can better appeal to the future adventurers and audiences of Kendal (catch their special pick of films in ‘Youth Programmed’). While our Literature Festival embraces the idea that a summit should be for everyone with the ‘Open Mountain’ initiative; calling for unrepresented voices in the outdoors. Plus our new film collections, ‘Outside Thinkers I & II’ push creative, innovative activists and conservationists to the forefront.

Every year at Kendal we deliver cutting edge content; premiere films, untold stories, and classic tales of fabled heroes and heroines. We encourage you to follow in the steps of the little star of our Festival trailer this year, and take the plunge. Try a film session you wouldn’t have thought of, pull up a seat next to a stranger, dance your way into our ceilidh, push yourself in our trail run and take a plunge in our crystal fresh lakes… You never know – perhaps sharing these adventures will change you!

GET THE MOST OUT OF THE FESTIVAL!

THE FESTIVAL HUB

The Brewery Arts Centre is the central hub of the Festival weekend. Here you will find our Box Office , the Info Desk , the Guest Summit Lounge and our enormous tented village with its brand interaction and free talks. Look out for the Basecamp, the Shackleton Tent , the Lowe Alpine Yurt and the The North Face Advanced Basecamp – you might need a map! The Brewery Arts Centre is also the destination for some of our film screenings, many of our Literature Festival talks, our Film Awards and a slew of Festival speakers. Of course no festival will be a festival without bars, cafes, live music and parties – all to be found here.

OUR OTHER VENUES

However it doesn’t only happen at the Brewery – we keep growing! Stretching through the lanes of Kendal we have other venues in use; including Kendal Town Hall, the Shakespeare Centre , the Library, the Abbot Hall Social Centre and the big one – the 900 seated Leisure Centre and new for 2019 – Ye Olde Fleece Inn . The map at the back of the programme will help you find your way!

THE PROGRAMME

...and what a programme it is! Films are at the heart of the Festival - we have over 80 of them screening over the weekend, divided into 21 different film collections - which are mostly repeated several times over the Festival. For 2019, we are excited to be introducing a new system for viewing the films that make up our Film Programme: we are selling individual Film Session Tickets instead of Day Film Passes. The reason for doing this is to maximise capacity at venues and allow you more flexibility to enjoy the full depth of our programme, whilst keeping film at the very heart of our Festival. If there’s an event you really want to attend and it clashes with a film collection, check when else it is being screened and use the handy planner at the back of the programme to plan your weekend!

KEEP INFORMED

We sometimes have to make last minute changes so any Festival updates are communicated via: Twitter @kendalmountain, Instagram and Facebook @kendalmountainfestival, plus oldskool noticeboards at the Brewery Arts Centre Box Office and Info Desk in the Basecamp Village.

FESTIVAL FUEL

There’s food and drink available at all our major venues. Lots of choice in particular at the Brewery Arts Centre - both at the restaurants and outside with concessions, also check out the bars at the Kendal Town Hall and Leisure Centre. Plus the town of Kendal is ready and waiting with over 40 bars, cafes and restaurants all within a few minutes walk of the main venues. A list of Kendal’s offerings can be found on page 34, including opening times and food type.

GETTING AROUND

All our venues are accessible by foot or bicycle. You shouldn’t need to walk more than 20 minutes between any venues. There is limited parking available especially in the immediate vicinity of the Brewery Arts Centre and Town Hall (Highgate). Rather than setting your Sat Nav for the centre of town (and potentially getting stuck in traffic on Highgate or around town’s notorious one way system) we recommend you point yourself towards a car park/location a little further away and walk to the Festival venues. More parking information can be found on our website.

As part of its centenary this year, the Forestry Commission launched a new writers’ residency to diversify voices found in nature writing. During 2019, writers Tiffany Francis-Baker and Zakiya Mckenzie spent time exploring the nation’s forests and meeting the people looking after these majestic landscapes. Join Anita Sethi as Tiffany and Zakiya take us on a journey into England’s woodlands, hearing excerpts of their work and exploring where nature writing could go next.

With the Climate Movement taking place and receiving huge input from our young people, we believe it is vitally important as a Festival to step up, and empower and support these young Climate Activists. Therefore we are delivering a session addressing the ‘theme of future hope’ and how young people can creatively look at ways to have their voice heard. Featuring local youth activists, Jemima Longcake and Mathew Cockram plus film directors and leading environmental groups, we will explore how collectively as a community we can work together.

Photographer Ben Tibbets shares photographs, drawings and stories from the highest peaks of the European Alps. After nearly a decade of climbing to reach all 82 alpine summits over 4000m, Ben describes his journey on each ascent through a series of stirring adventures, into which are woven stories from the historical climbs. The event will be presented by climber Rob Greenwood.

Literature Festival Director Paul Scully says, “Our Festival is a place where we can reflect on our relationships with nature, landscape, society and to each other. A space where people are challenged to be receptive to different ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. We hope you are able to join us, no matter who you are, in this community of ideas, words and wanderings.” This year we have a packed programme of writers, poets, historians, dancers and even an opera singer! Hear from those who have kayaked the Atlantic coast, travelled to remote outposts around the world, walked the height of Everest in England and battled to save precious environments. We are also proud to have launched ‘Open Mountain’ – a new voice in mountain and outdoor literature. After an open call for submissions this summer our judges selected five pieces of written work which will be performed at this session followed by a discussion with people under-represented in the outdoors. We’re also delighted to once again have further expanded our Children’s Literature programme.

A WORD FROM OUR PATRON ROBERT MACFARLANE

“My eyes were closed, and now they are open”, remarks Nan Shepherd in The Living Mountain (1977), one of the defining works of twentieth century nature writing. Shepherd was describing the experience of waking high in the Cairngorms after a night’s sleep; she was also, of course, referring to the power of the living world to open our eyes more broadly. Mountains, forests, rivers, a patch of edgeland where life flourishes; all can prompt new ways of seeing, belonging and relating, all can cause deep shifts in the heart’s sense of itself.

To be open to the world is an ethical – even a political – stance, as well as an aesthetic one. At a time when borders are being reinforced, positions hardened, prejudices deepened, when walls are literally being built between communities and nation-states, openness becomes vital. To be open means to welcome difference and change, to fight for equality and generosity and to fight against barriers and enclosures; to walk wideeyed with wonder through this beautiful, vulnerable planet of ours. These are some of the qualities celebrated by this year’s rich and diverse programme. Now, more than ever, we must keep our minds and our mountains open.

Rachael Kidd’s work is primarily about the landscape and how we fit within it. She digs deep into ‘Landscape’ as a subject as she attempts to move away from seeing her environment as a simply framed and romanticised place, and more towards it being a complex structure for experience – a cognitive landscape – a sensuous and animate world.

With this body of work she asks; What is the unseen landscape? What lies beyond the surface and is this where true wilderness resides? Is the world perceiving itself through us, as we do through it?

LOUISE ANN WILSON ‘MOMENTS OF BEING’: MOUNTAIN, CAVE, COAST WALKING-PERFORMANCE IN RURAL LANDSCAPES HEATON COOPER GALLERY

An exhibition of walking-performance in rural landscapes created by Louise Ann Wilson. Showing film, photographs, objects, drawings, poems and texts ‘Moments of Being’ draws on the body of work Louise has created over the last decade. These works have been staged in the Lake District, Cornwall, Snowdonia, the Trough of Bowland, the Ingleborough Fells, and Morecambe Bay.

TOPOG FOUR ARTISTS AND THE IDEA OF A PLACE ARTSPACE AT THE FACTORY

Whether it’s mountains, lakes or towns, this exhibition celebrates the artists’ individual and idiosyncratic views of their subjects. Working in a variety of media – paint, print, drawing, collage and installation – these four artists are passionate about the landscapes they portray.

Pam Williamson continues her explorations of environment and climate; Lynda Gray presents her sharply observed townscapes; and David Penn’s vigorous on-the-spot mountain drawings contrast with Nancy Gray’s contemplative lakes-inspired collages.

KENDAL MOUNTAIN PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION 2019 PRESENTED BY

Now in its 12th year, this prestigious competition has cemented a reputation for discovering new talent and celebrating some of the most captivating imagery from the world of outdoor adventure.

For 2019 the Festival is delighted to welcome new partners –Heart of the Lakes to present the Photography Competition.

THE BRIEF

This year the Festival looked for images that fit with the Festival’s theme of ‘Openness’ – a call to the Festival, audiences and adventurers to be open to all people, places and ideas. With this theme in mind, we encouraged entries that celebrate a wide variety of adventures and landscapes – from the shores of an isolated tarn in the Lake District to a paddle down an urban canal to the solitude of a high alpine peak.

We bring you the finest selection of holiday cottages, all set in the stunning Lake District National Park.

THE EXHIBITION

We’re delighted to share with you the 12 shortlisted images in the exhibition at the Brewery Arts Centre Intro Bar.

THE PRIZE

The winning photograph will be announced at the Festival Award Ceremony on Saturday 16 November, from 7.30pm in the Basecamp village. The winner will receive a £500 voucher to spend at Heart of the Lakes.

2019 has been a momentous year for the sustainability movement. Growing awareness on pollution and humaninduced climate change have called for action that goes beyond token gestures. We are witnessing an uprising of advocacy and activism at grass roots level, which is demanding change from leaders.

RECYCLING

We have installed recycling stations at all of our venues. We ask that you take your rubbish away with you after each event, and dispose of it at one of the recycling points.

Kendal Mountain Festival is a platform for discussion and exploration, learning together to understand how the environmental, social and political narrative interacts with mountain culture and adventure. We want to know what we, our partners and audience can do to make changes needed to live within social foundations and environmental limits of a healthy world. We are using the UN Global Goals - which focus on People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace & Partnership - to guide our sustainability targets. These are being scored using our values, which ensures sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We’ve made some changes this year, and looked at how we manage consumption, content, programming and partnerships to reduce our waste, natural resource use and emissions.

We have introduced E-tickets. Please buy your tickets online and download them onto your smartphone instead of printing them off. There will still be an option to collect from the Brewery Box Office.

FOOD AND DRINK

We have local food venders at Basecamp, who ensure, where possible, that ingredients are local. There will also be more vegan and vegetarian options. All of our venders will be using eco friendly containers and cutlery.

We have introduced a cup deposit scheme. You will be asked to pay a £1 deposit for your cup at the bar. The cups are made from polypeptide (PP) and printed using eco ink. These cups have a lower environmental impact than a single-use cup after less than 3 uses. You can choose whether or not you want to keep your cup, or donate your £1 - all profits go to the World Land Trust, a conservation charity working to preserve natural habitats and indigenous communities – www.worldlandtrust.org

For the first time, we are using SWISSWOOL as knitted yarn in our CLASSIC KNIT HOODY. This involves working together with traditional companies, which rely on artisanal production processes to carefully process the Swiss wool into unique products. Find out more at ortovox.com

PROGRAMMES

Since 2013 we have provided our programmes for free, because we feel it adds to the event experience and is often the simplest way to get a birds-eye-view of all of the events. We use local printers (H&H Reeds), who use vegetable-based printing inks, and capture their CO2 emissions from paper purchases by planting native woodland in the UK through the Woodland Trust and the Woodland Carbon Capture scheme.

LEAFLETS

We have introduced a leaflet wall in the Basecamp, so that local businesses can let you know what they have on offer, without leaving a huge paper trail. We are introducing a #TakeAPhoto campaign, which encourages people to take a picture of flyers to send to friends or post images on social media. We are encouraging brands to reduce the volume of paper they use.

For those of you staying on the outskirts of Kendal over the weekend, we encourage you to use the bus or train. Northern Rail (www.northernrailway.co.uk) and Stagecoach (www. stagecoachbus.com) run a number of services throughout Cumbria and the Lake District.

Our Basecamp is made from reclaimed pallets and is built each year by a small team. We’ve switched all the light bulbs to low energy LED, and we ask all stand holders in Basecamp to inform us of how much power they need.

With the Climate Movement taking place and receiving huge input from our young people, we believe it is vitally important as a Festival to step up, and empower and support these young Climate Activists. Therefore we are delivering a session addressing the ‘theme of future hope’ and how young people can creatively look at ways to have their voice heard. Featuring local youth activists, Jemima Longcake and Mathew Cockram plus film directors and leading environmental groups, we will explore how collectively as a community we can work together to be effective climate activists.

DURHAM ADVENTURE FESTIVAL

This April, we were delighted to return to the fantastic Gala Theatre in Durham to support Durham County Council in delivering their second Adventure Festival in conjunction

ADVENTURE ACTIVISTS TOUR 2019

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

The Adventure Activists Tour aims to build environmental awareness through adventure.

Back for the third year, the 2019 tour features a series of two and a half hour events – each event includes talks by two inspirational speakers alongside the screening of a thoughtprovoking and insightful film.

We welcome you to join us as we share stories of positive change to environmental threats and begin conversations to make a difference on a local and global scale.

By opening discussions, we hope the events will inspire us to better understand environmental issues and find new ways to make a difference. Including practical, everyday advice from our speakers.

The tour is presented by Patagonia and Kendal Mountain Festival. A collaboration, which enables us to combine the adventurous sprit of the Festival with Patagonia’s message of environmental and social responsibility.

THE TOUR SPEAKERS

CAL MAJOR is an ocean advocate, explorer and founder of Paddle Against Plastic, raising awareness of the problem of plastic pollution in the ocean, and campaigning for reducing plastic use.

CLARE DYSON is an equestrian adventurer. In 2018 she set off to fulfil a childhood dream with a tent, a collie called Finn and an untrained Fell Pony called Pansy. Clare covered 250 miles, sleeping wild and waking up to the stunning Cumbrian landscape.

DOM FERRIS is the man behind non-profit organisation Trash Free Trails – they aim to reduce the amount of litter on the UK’s mountain bike trails by informing and empowering riders, supporting community action and campaigning for industry engagement and innovation.

ROBBIE PHILIPS is a Patagonia ambassador who has competed internationally for Scotland, climbed some of the worlds most iconic hard rock climbs and claimed first ascents across the globe.

LAUREN MACCALLUM is an enthusiast and advocate for outdoor living. She lives in Scotland and works on projects that promote outdoor adventure and environmentalism.

CHRIS HINES was a Co-founder of Surfers Against Sewage and Sustainability Director at the Eden Project for 5 years. In 2008 he was awarded an MBE for “services to the environment”. He now aims to deliver positive change by working with clients with a shared vision, including sitting on the BBC’s Sustainability Advisory Group.

Growing Well is a farm-based Mental Health charity near Kendal. We provide a safe supportive working environment to nurture mental health recovery. We work with people on a weekly basis, sometime over years, to help rebuild a sense of purpose, to engage in meaningful and fulfilling activity and to build hope for the future. When people leave us, they have learnt the skills to manage their mental health, reduce their reliance on health services, but know how to access help if they need it. For many people, recovery is a lifelong journey.

World Land Trust (WLT) is an international conservational charity that protect’s the world’s most biologically significant and threatened habitats race by acre. Through a network of partner organisations around the world, WLT funds the creation of reserves and provides permanent protection for habitats and wildlife. HELP US TO BUY AND PROTECT A MOUNTAIN RANGE FOR ETERNITY!

Our aim is to raise £24,100 to purchase and protect 241 acres of land in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in the Hoya Verde region of Mexico.

A beautiful and biodiverse area, much of which is under private ownership and consequently at threat from cattle ranching, slash and burn forest clearance, illegal hunting, timber extraction, mining and urban sprawl. The funds are raised as part of the World Land Trust ‘Buy an Acre’ project where funds are raised to ‘buy’ the land, then ownership is passed over to local conservational groups.

English Naturalist and friend of Kendal Mountain Festival, Steve Backshall is delighted to be supporting this project.

“What we are trying to do is buy a whole bunch of forest in the Sierra Gorda Reserve in Mexico. It’s a forest that is highly threatened from slash and burn farming and if we don’t do something about it, it is going to be gone.”

ANGELA’S STORY

“My name is Angela Jeremiah Desdery, I am a Tanzania female born and raised. I am a second born to my family with 5 siblings. Unfortunately, our parents passed away when we were still young and I have been responsible for my two young sisters for some time.

Trekking Mount Kilimanjaro for me started back in 2017, as the life challenge, but a few hours into my first day hike I fell in love with the mountain, by the end of my first day during the evening briefing by the guides, I knew in my heart that I have to pursue a career in mountain guiding. I describe myself as determined, multipurpose, creative easy going individual who enjoys working with others. I am an Individual who likes serving humanity.

ROBERTSON OUTDOOR BURSARY

Robertson Outdoor Bursary was created to improve the lives of porters, guides and support staff who work on Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

We strive to do this through; funding educational bursaries to enabling awardees to gain qualifications, expertise and opportunities that would otherwise be beyond their reach and equip mountain staff with technical kit through partnership working to enhance safety on the mountain. We also inspire our awardees to believe in their own selfworth and motivate them to improve their knowledge and skills while ensuring that all our potential awardees are given equal access to training courses without negative discrimination. Each year we aim to raise money to allow the training of eight new guides.
