REAL BULLS FOR REAL COWBOYS They tell us it is climate change but it feels like we are living on the Edge of Tomorrow. Spring and summer was a repeat of the last four years – dry and hot. Water and grass are short. Hay prices are still high. All that being said optimism still thrives as calf, cull cows and bull prices are all high. We even heard an example from one client who’s 2015 purchase, Lot 150, after 7 years of use returned more at harvest than the original purchase price. The Cudlobe Influence calf sale was the largest ever with record prices.

While Cudlobe has felt the pains of the last four years of drought we have also been humbled this last year being honored by the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) as one of North America’s top Seedstock producers. David was also humbled to receive the BIF Pioneer award. The goldmine that is the Cudlobe cow herd continues to do its job being the factory that continues to carry any new genetics we use. With 7 new sires we continue to see what the Cudlobe cow herd can do with this being the best set of bulls to date. We are excited to once again welcome you to both farms prior to the sale for a look through the bulls and lunch with the sale set to be at the Stavely Community Hall at 3:00pm.

INTRODUCING

THE NEW CANADIAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION’S CANADIAN BALANCED INDEX EPDs for new traits that are economically relevant are being developed and introduced to Canadian Angus members continuously. Applying EPDs for all these traits into selection and breeding decisions can be challenging. Therefore, the Canadian Angus Association has worked to develop an Economic Selection Index that includes the EPDs for all traits. Traits are weighted in the index based on their economic impact on the Canadian commercial operation.

For the commercial producer—who likely purchases bulls and thinks about EPDs on only one day of the year—it is a useful overall guide that simplifies the complexity of multiple EPDs.

Basically, indexes help producers use EPDs to balance traits. Balancing traits can be complex. Not all traits make an equal contribution to profitability, and some traits counteract each other (e.g. post-weaning growth and cow size/feed requirements). Other traits are important to a certain threshold, then there is less benefit in going any further (e.g. calving ease) or even a direct cost (e.g. milk production).

The index is expressed in terms of Canadian dollars and reflects the expected difference in profits between bulls’ progeny.

A well-constructed index can help streamline the process of selecting cattle for breeding. It is not intended to replace individual trait EPDs (which will still be available) or to tell breeders how to breed. An index can help breeders focus on cattle that will tend to be more profitable under Canadian production systems and markets.

The Canadian Balanced Index will officially be launched later this year.

For example: Bull A CBI = $250 Bull B CBI = $150 On average, progeny from Bull A will be $100 more profitable in a Canadian commercial operation than the progeny from Bull B. 2023 was a great year to sell beef! While the beginning of the year saw some consumer push back on prices, customers were quick to pick up more secondary cuts as the summer progressed. Feeder Sale 2023 Monday October 3, 2023 marked a very special day in the Beef Business for

CUDLOBE ANGUS and some of their customers.

2023 was the 10th anniversary of the Cudlobe influence feeder calf Sale. The criteria to be part of the sale is that 50% of the calves must be Cudlobe Angus sired. this year there were 2500 calves featured in the sale from Sheppard Creek Ranch, Matt and Addie Bolduc - Cudlobe West Niznik Ranches, Torkelson Farms, Roy & Karen Hall, Randy Hitchcock, Curtis, Heather, Jamie and Stephanie Harbinson and the Giles Ranch. Sale Took Place October 2 as it has been in the chosen date for the last few years selling the first week of October. Over the last five years, there has been an increasing desire for these genetically influenced calves, which is evident in the repeat customers coming back to purchase year after year. responses from buyers have been extremely valuable in them sharing that these calves are healthy and perform extremely well on feed. The calves have been showing a premium between $.05 and $.10. Based on can fax averages that week consistently over the last number of years. The commitment of these ranchers to continue to participate in the sale is amazing and it’s an absolute privilege to be part of it. This is the longest running genetically influenced sale in North America. The quality of these calves is extremely apparent Due to the repeat customers competing for them year after year. This group of ranchers is dedicated and committed to delivering the best of the best to the buyers. These are a tight group of individuals sharing a common goal, of providing this high quality well performing Calves. As we look to the future, we know the margins are thin in this industry, so it becomes increasingly more important to purchase quality cattle that perform.
