HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DLMS FARM GATE TIMED AUCTION WITH EXTENDED BIDDING:

1.Visit dlms.ca and follow the link to the DLMS Farm Gate Timed Auction site at www.farmgatetimedauctions. ca, click the LOGIN/REGISTRATION button. First time users will select the REGISTER button from this page. Fill out the registration form to signup for a free user account and it allows you to select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions. This program will send you text and email messages whenever there is activity on your favorite lots or someone challenges your proxy bid and this is why you will be asked for both your current email and cell phone number. If you are a past participant in the Farm Gate Timed auctions simply enter your username and password to continue. This takes you to a list of both current and upcoming Farm Gate Auctions.

2. You can choose your favourite lots in this sale at this time and the program will allow you to open either all sale lots or just your favorite lots on your screen. Any time there is active bidding on a lot you have identified on your favorite list you will get a text and/or an email noting this activity.

3. The program allows you to place a proxy bid on any sale lot. This in fact protects your interest in any lot of interest for you to a specified dollar value you set, when you may not be able to give 100% attention to the sale. If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest.

4. At closing time of the sale the entire sale will extend bidding if a bid is placed on any lot in the sale. Any bid received after close time will extend the sale by the time listed on each sale. In Most cases the time gets shorter the longer in to extended bidding the sale is. When no bidding occurs for the extended time the computer will declare the sale finished.

5. Following the sale the Owner or Sale Manager will invoice all buyers in the sale, please contact the seller with questions or to arrange delivery, pick up or shipping of your purchases.

FAQ:

WHAT IS RACEHORSE STYLE SALE CLOSE?

Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding.

HOW WILL EXTENDED BIDDING WORK?

When we get to the close out end time the clock for close extends with any bid placed with less than 5 minutes on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in.

DLMS Farm Gate Timed Auctions ~ Mark Shologan Ph: 780-699-5082

Homestead Angus Welcome

Another year has come and gone, and we find ourselves in our tenth year of selling purebred black angus bull calves. This is our third DLMS Farmgate Auction after seven years of private treaty bull sales. We have been growing and developing our program over the past ten years, and we are proud of where we are at. And yet, there is always still so much more to learn and do, and we have many future goals for the growth of Homestead Angus.

We are very proud of the bulls we are presenting to you in this, our tenth year. The group as a whole are masculine, have great feet and gentle temperaments. We have carefully selected these 22 bulls out of our calf crop. We have studied them throughout last summer and during the winter, judging them on not just their performance but also their structure and temperament. Any bull that did not prove good performance or cope well with being moved around, handled, pictured, etc. simply does not make the cut. We know the dams of these bulls well and have seen the same strong traits year after year in their calves, which means we can be confident that you will be happy with your selection from our pen.

We have continued to battle drought but were grateful to at least get the sileage pit filled this year. We are thrilled to have so much snow and are hoping for an amazing runoff. As always in this ‘next year country,’ we are looking forward to lush grass for grazing and full crops to fill the stack yards, bins and pit.

We have continued to use embryo transplants in our program, which is adding some great females to the herd and we are excited to be keeping an embryo bull calf for our own program. We are also thrilled to have obtained BAR-E-L Driving Force 23K this year as a herd sire and look forward to getting him home and out with the girls.

During the ten years of Homestead Angus, Calvin and I have each juggled a couple of day jobs, parenting, volunteering, the commercial herd, and our growing purebred program. Our operation, and those putting in the daily work, has evolved as the kids are growing up and moving away to pursue their own dreams and education. We are so grateful to have the team that we do and to be able to work with our kids, nieces, nephews, siblings and grandparents that always lend a hand. We also appreciate the opportunity to work alongside Darcy Elliott for the Open House and Farmgate Auction each year. He is enjoyable and easy to have around and is always happy to talk cows and bloodlines!

Another partner in the successful development of our bulls, as well as the daily maintenance of the cow herd, is Bullseye Feeds. Brayden is a pleasure to work with and Bullseye’s guidance has ensured that our bulls have seen the growth and development we desire, yet maintain the functionality and longevity that we value most. At the time of writing this we have 22 calves on the ground and the cows and newborns are healthy and independent, thanks to overall good health.

We have also chosen to highlight a couple of businesses in this catalogue that have also supported us. R&L Transport does all our hauling, while also supporting us every one of the ten years that Homestead Angus has been selling bulls. MacPherson Meats has sold delicious meat products for years now, and has been a valued repeat, volume buying customer every single year. It would be safe to say that some of their terrific beef comes from Homestead prodigy. True Gritz does amazing work keeping our aluminum stock trailer shiny and looking good, and we appreciate their purchase of a bull last year.

And when you are looking at the bulls at our OPEN HOUSE this THURSDAY, APRIL 13TH, be sure to pause to admire the very well-built panels purchased from Shortgrass Cattle Co.!

Thanks for taking a moment to flip through the catalogue, and we welcome you to stop in for a visit and a coffee. We would be proud to show you the bulls.

Elliott Bros Welcome

Dad and I, at Elliott Bros are pleased to offer this set of yearling and two year old bulls. We feel we have some exceptional breeding pieces to offer that have great dispositions. They have been pail fed a well rounded grain base and have had free choice of chopped hay and green feed.

We have a very functional group of bulls, they are ready to go out and get the job done. The yearlings are all out of our herdsire PM Natural law 12’20 which has done really well for us in the replacement pen, he was the high selling bull at Poplar Meadow Angus in 2021. We would like to thank the Powell family for including us in their sale, a wonderful bunch of people to partner with and appreciate their friendship.

Please feel free to call for more info.

Looking to add some style and performance to you herd look no further. A maternal brother to our high seller in last years sale, he’s got a solid future in anyone’s herd. His mother excels in many areas, worth a look if your wanting to keep heifers. Would work on herd or larger heifers.

America is a very complete bull. Long and stylish, he is the son of the famed highest selling bull in Angus history, he’s a really well rounded bull. The mother is a well balanced four seasons daughter that was purchased from the Johnson dispersal with this guy as a coupon.

DDD Acclaim 19J

Acclaim is a calving ease bull that we really like. Long and good footed. He comes from a dam that we have retained two daughters off 3 stars on disposition.

American Angus Association® FOOT SCORE GUIDELINES

1 Animals must be scored prior to hoof trimming.

2 When there is variation among an animal’s feet, score the worst foot.

3 Score yearling bulls and heifers

• Bulls or heifers must be at least 320 days of age at scoring time

4 Older females can be scored following guidelines used when collecting mature weights.

(Note: Foot structure changes as animals age. Scores will be adjusted for age as part of the analysis. Scores should describe the animal as they are at the time of scoring, without consideration of age).

5 Large groups of 18-month or 2-year-old bulls can also be submitted, if available.

It is a pleasure to be working with the Powell family at Homestead Angus. The program has a great group of bulls on offer for the 2023 Bull Sale.

The bulls are developed on grass with their mothers, and then moved onto a balanced total mixed ration that promotes lean muscle growth. The bulls feeding program is built to maximize forage utilization and rumen health. Organic minerals are also used in the bulls total mixed ration to maximize the overall nutritional health and development. Rumen health is continuously being monitored during the bulls feeding period and is adjusted accordingly to meet environmental and seasonal challenges.

If you have any questions about the nutrition, please feel free to contact me.
