RUNOFF ELECTIONS

Biedermann, Schmidt, Olfers win Buckingham tops King in Senate race to replace Fraser By Ken Esten Cooke Kyle Biedermann rode a tea party-backed wave of antiincumbent sentiment and scored a huge upset against three-term District 73 State Rep. Doug Miller in Tuesday’s runoff elections. In county races, Vicki Schmidt defeated sitting county tax assessor-collector Marissa Weinheimer and Charles Olfers outpaced Dennis Behrends to win the runoff for Precinct 1

County Commissioner. “I started this campaign as a grassroots challenger knocking on thousands of doors and meeting tens of thousands of voters,” Biedermann said in a news release Tuesday night. “I have been blessed to live in Texas for the past 30 years and I have been working as hard as I can to provide for my family and serve my community. Tonight was a great win for the taxpayers and conservative grassroots.”

Biedermann, who was not available for comment by press time, stated he will not be beholden to entrenched interests when he gets to the State Capitol. “It was a tough fight, but this fact also means that I do not owe the Austin lobby, the entrenched interests and the capitol power brokers anything when I arrive in Austin,” he said. “My votes as a representative will be cast based upon rock solid conservative prin-

ciples and doing what is right and just for the people in this district and our great state.” The race was called for Biedermann just after 9 p.m. as the challenger kept a consistent 55 percent to 45 percent lead as precincts reported. This marks the first time in 65 years that a Gillespie County resident has represented the district in the State Capitol. In the Texas Senate District 24 race to replace longtime

Pinch some tails at annual Crawfish Fest

National Museum of the Pacific War will host its annual Memorial Day observance at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, in the Memorial Courtyard. The museum is at 340 East Main Street. This observance, free and open to the public, honors all of those who have lost their lives serving in the United States armed forces.

Come rain or shine, the three-day Fredericksburg Crawfish Festival returns Friday through Sunday, May 27-29, at Marktplatz. “It’s rained on us the last three or four years,” said Joshua Buss, president of the Fredericksburg Jaycees. “It’s kind of a tradition. People seem to like to eat crawfish in the rain.” “Unless an act of God happens, we won’t shut it down,”
