AHOY! ////////////////////// KENNEY FITZPATRICK - CONFERENCE CHAIR Hello COCA! Welcome to Halifax and to the east coast! It’s been many years since the national conference has been in Halifax and we are completely excited to have it back. As you’ve no doubt realized by now, we’ve titled this year’s conference IMPACT 2013. That’s not just a creative means to make the conference sound more sophisticated. The title comes from much thought about what we want you to get out of this experience. We hope to impact you so that you in turn will go back and make an impact on your respective campuses. We’re very fortunate to have such opportunities like the COCA national conference. Many times over the past 10 plus years I have returned back to my school full of new ideas, excitement and energy to create positive events, programs and campaigns for our student body. Because of COCA I’ve learned so much, grown as a manager, a leader, a mentor and an educator. I’ve made incredible new friends and developed some of my most trusted relationships. Take every advantage you can over the next few days to make connections and develop new relationships. There’s so much to discover through the experiences of your fellow delegates. Ask questions and engage with each other. But above all else, it is essential that you attend your education sessions! A majority of our planning time is devoted to crafting a broad range of educational sessions to provide you with variety of knowledge to return you to your campus better equipped for the year ahead. Take every advantage you can over the next few days to make connections and develop new relationships. There’s so much to discover through the experiences of your fellow delegates. A majority of our planning time is devoted to crafting a broad range of educational sessions to provide you with variety of knowledge to return you to your campus better equipped for the year ahead. I would like to send a huge thank you to all those who have worked so incredibly hard to help make this conference possible. Special thanks to: Pete Munro, Phil Champagne, Carrigan Desjardins, Andrew Barbour, Craig Walsh, Alicia Romkey, Kevin Masterson, Al Legault, Sophia Bourris, Todd Hoffman, Zach Gallant, Patti Hutchison, Erica Kitchen, Colton Fagan, Emcee Noel, Alex Foster-Roman, Colin Gray, Chuck Erman, Jeff Knee and a very special thanks to Mike Kokich! To our associates, thank you for your continued contributions and support. You are a huge part of this conference and your involvement is always appreciated. And as always, a huge thanks to our COCA Board of Directors and our Executive Director, Earle Taylor. This organization continues to be propelled by strong leadership and our current board is a fantastic example of that. Finally, I’d like to thank the schools and leaders that make up COCA EAST! Over the course of time one very prominent thing has always remained firm: the bond, support and commitment of the east coast schools to one another. Your support, encouragement and enthusiasm over the past year has made an already excellent experience that much better! On behalf of the COCA Board of Directors, welcome home! And here’s a fantastic conference experience! slàinte mhath! Kenney Fitzpatrick Mount Saint Vincent University Chair - 2013 COCA National Conference

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS //////////// FRANK WARREN

Frank Warren is the most trusted stranger in America. He’s creator of the The PostSecret Project, a place where people share their private hopes, desires and fears. A place where the secrets they could not tell their friends and family would be treated with dignity in a non-judgmental way. The result is PostSecret - a collection of intimately personal and artistic postcards mailed anonymously from individuals worldwide, sharing personal secrets. The PostSecret website has become a phenomenon earning over 450 million visitors, the world’s largest advertisement-free blog. The popularity of the project and its impact has earned Warren recognition as one of the top five influential people on the internet by Forbes. Warren’s books have become bestsellers including the New York Times bestseller, PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives, and his work has been featured on USA Today, The Today Show, 20/20, CNN, MSNBC, CBC, NPR, George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. The PostSecret App hit No. 1 on iTunes. He has delivered keynote addresses around the world at colleges and universities, mental health conferences and major events.

Sameen Topan, National Speakers Bureau /// stopan@nsb.com /// 1-800-360-1073 /// postsecret.com /// Twitter: @postsecret

@postsecret

At times hilarious and heartbreaking, the secrets reflect complex issues that many of us struggle with: intimacy, trust, meaning, humor, and desire. As an advocate for mental health initiatives & suicide prevention, the National Mental Health Association recognized him with a special award. Warren is a volunteer for and actively involved in the organization Hopeline/1-800-SUICIDE.

Heather Jarvis is a queer feminist activist. With experience in gender studies, social work and community activism she has spent several years supporting and initiating projects around sexuality, gender, education, stigma and health, anti-violence efforts and creating safer spaces for support.

HEATHER JARVIS

As a survivor, Jarvis was infuriated upon hearing a slut-shaming and victim-blaming comment made by a representative of the Toronto Police force when discussing safety. Having had enough, she cofounded SlutWalk in early 2011 - a small idea that began in Toronto to fight sexual violence and has since spread across the world. Identifying with sex- and body-positive politics Jarvis constantly aims to shed shame around sex, sexuality and the bodies we have. She has a fascination with language and identities and strives to utilize language to interrogate ideas and blend important conversations across oppression, privilege, desire and expression. Through her politics and her work she has become a speaker, advocate and educator. Described as an eternal optimist by some who know her, Jarvis refuses to believe things cannot change. She is determined to continuously work on improving this world through increased respect, consent, understanding and acceptance.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS //////////// Matt Wells either fancies himself a bit of a renaissance man or is still trying to figure out what he wants to be when he grows up. His path began fronting the notorious Newfoundland band Bucket Truck where he paid his dues performing on a flatbed truck, at empty bars, and to audiences as large as 30 000 while sharing the stage with bands like Slayer, Damage Plan, Our Lady Peace, Filter, D.O.A, and Green Day. Bucket Truck’s final album was 2005’s “Favor the Bull” recorded in Umea, Sweden and Pouch Cove, Newfoundland with acclaimed producer Pelle Henricsson (Refused) with special guest Walter Schreifels (Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits).

MATT WELLS

While still touring North America in a 1988 Ford Club Wagon with a broken heater, Matt landed the gig as host of Going Coastal on Much Music where he profiled acts like Feist, Wintersleep, Hot Hot Heat, Hey Rosetta! and Classified before they were thrust into mainstream consciousness. This journey directly led to him embarking on a career as a music television host, music journalist, and interviewer, which over the past 10 years for Much Music, MuchMore, Bravo, MTV and CTV, has put him face to face with Metallica, Lady Gaga, Benicio Del Toro, Quentin Tarantino, Ozzy Osbourne, Lou Reed, Ben Kingsley, The Police, Debbie Harry, Samuel L Jackson, and Aerosmith (just to name a few). It also brought him to the 2010 Winter Olympics as host of The CTV Digital Lounge where Matt had the opportunity to sit down with the world’s most accomplished Olympians past and present. Matt is a Gemini nominated television host with well over 1500 interview under his belt, but still continues to make music, now co-fronting the 8 piece folk/roots group Lazybones who have released 2 albums, 4 videos, and performed with Levon Helm, Great Big Sea and Tom Cochrane. Over the past year as an actor, he has appeared in the critically acclaimed Tara Berthier, Speakers Boutique /// tara@speakersboutique.com /// Toronto 416.551.6986 /// Halifax 902.999.8272 /// web-series “Prison Dancer; The Musical!”; on TV screens in the CW/CBS 2012 reboot of “Beauty & the Beast” along side Kristin Kreuk; in the short film facebook.com/mattalexanderwells /// Twitter: @mattawells “The Business of Acting” (Wild Driver); and on the stage as Rick in the wildly successful farcical comedy “Frances & Marybeth” at the Factory Theatre in Toronto.

@MattAWells

Not for nuthin’, Matt just might be the only music journalist/actor/writer/ musician/TV host/dad who has interviewed Slayer then jumped on stage to open for them; recorded a song with Huey Lewis; and performed a Led Zeppelin song onstage with half of Van Halen.

TANYA DAVIS

Tanya Davis was the 2011/2012 Poet Laureate of Halifax, NS. Her videopoem How to be Alone, has had over 5 million views on youtube, attracting fans and supporters from the world over. She’s been commissioned by the likes of CBC, The National Film Board of Canada, and Canada Games to pen poems and verse for radio, film, and live performance and she frequently collaborates across artistic genres and media. Tanya tours regularly and internationally as a poet, speaker, and musician and has, thus far, released three albums and one book. Tanya writes custom pieces based on an organization’s objective or theme. She provides a way for your event’s participants to reflect and remember the important messages that were shared.

Clubs 102 - Fundy Room

MAINSTAGE SHOWCASE (THURS) Seahorse Tavern - Thurs, June 20th / 8:30-11:30pm

This has been a big year for Acres and Acres. The band released their sophomore album Truth & Sky, charted on campus radio across the country (#1 on CKDU in Halifax), toured the Maritimes with a full band & string section, and sold out half the shows on their album release tour. Based in Halifax, NS, the band consists of a duo of songwriters (Kris Pope & David Scholten), a killer rhythm section (Jordi Comstock, Ian Sherwood), and a talented composer & keys player (Ian Bent). For bigger shows, a string quartet joins the group, adding the lush layers found on the album. The band’s debut album All Nations was nominated for Recording of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards. Three years of writing, touring, recording, collaborating and general endless philosophizing resulted in a concise and impressive follow-up album. Truth & Sky uses a variety of live recordings and studio tracks to further develop the band’s unique atmospheric-folk sound.

In their formative years Gloryhound listened to Alice Cooper, The Ramones, Thin Lizzy and Iggy Pop. All of these influences can be heard in their self-styled form of rock, but their sound is truly their own. Simply put: “All stacks, no macs.”

GLORYHOUND

With their ECMA nominated debut album “Leave It Alone” under their belts, Gloryhound took up residency in Toronto, to both impress the masses and record their second record, Electric Dusk. On the strength of that recording, and a no holds barred sonic blast of a live performance, the band was signed to the prestigious Agency Group. Hundreds of gigs have followed including shows with Thin Lizzy, Thornley, Sam Roberts, Drive By Truckers, Big Wreck, The Sheep Dogs, Deep Purple and The Cult, along with repeat appearances at Canadian Music Week, NorthByNorthEast and JunoFest. Gloryhound’s Electric Dusk EP attracted rave reviews and multiple award nominations from Music NS and ECMA, while the EP title track achieved Top 20 status on the national Mediabase Active Rock charts and Top 30 on the Billboard/BDS Canadian Rock charts. Their song “Cruel Little Tease” landed in the opening segment of Michael Melski’s award-winning feature film Charlie Zone, while Electric Dusk, achieved placement in an “NHL Plays of the Week” video for the NHL Network.

While fans are immediately struck by the relevance of the evocative lyrics, they are ultimately won over by Michael Wood Band’s attention to all the other elements that make for great rock music. The live show is pure energy, with smoking guitar leads, melodic rhythms, and a seriously infectious groove. Catchy guitar driven originals blended with classic and contemporary rock favorites make for a seamless show. From Victoria, the four-piece features Michael Wood (vocals/guitar), Jon Baergen (bass/ vocals), Josh Weed (guitar/vocals), and Alex Campbell (drums/vocals). The band’s sound reflects multiple influences ranging from jazz to pop to classic rock, and diverse topics, from the Arab Spring (Should We Be Afraid) to over commercialism (End of the World) to finding your own path (I Think I’ll Just Go to Bed). Receiving radio play nationwide, MWB was voted New Artist of the Month on Ontario’s CKXS FM. Recorded at the Barn Recording Studio (Randy Bachman, Buffy Sainte-Marie) their full length CD “Occupy This” continues to bring them new fans, proving that the MWB are as dedicated to writing and recording great songs as they are to playing an incredible live show.

Two Hours Traffic’s specialty has always been unforgettable pop melodies. Now, with a revamped lineup and a new producer behind the board, the award-winning Charlottetown, PEI band has honed its craft and created its catchiest, most focused album to date. Entitled Foolish Blood, it was released on February 19 through Bumstead Records. Fans first experienced Two Hours Traffic’s retooled approach in late 2012 with the Siren Spell EP. That tantalizing four-song teaser was replete with electrifying, Motowninfluenced arrangements and razor-sharp choruses that were bighearted and hooky in equal measures. On Foolish Blood, listeners can now experience the full scope of the band’s vision.

Andrew Johnston grew up in the town of Brockville, Ontario with a population of 21,000; 1 of them gay (spoiler alert: it was HIM).

ANDREW JOHNSTON

Now a nationally renowned comedian (Yuk Yuk’s), writer (fab magazine, Xtra) and television personality (MuchMusic’s top-rated Video On Trial), his part interactive-stand-up, partlecture series “ It Gets Better The Best” walks through the extreme cases of bullying he faced growing up and how he came to cope with it - through a sense of humor. In this hour-long discussion, he explores how having a sense of humor can disarm bullying situations that persist well into adulthood, while also delving into pop culture and social media.

I would like to commend Andrew for his dedication to the cause of anti-bullying efforts. On behalf of every youth from across Canada, we thank you for your dedication and support. - Rob Frenette, O.N.B., Co-Executive Director / Co-Founder, BullyingCanada Inc.

Andrew Johnston is not just one of the most hilarious comedian I have ever seen; he skillfully deconstructs daily life, and experiences of discrimination, bullying and disrespect leaving his audience truly reflective. Starting his comedy career at the tender age of 15, Garrett Clark has had the opportunity to dabble in a few of its many different forms. With a repertoire that includes improv, sketch, and television hosting, Garrett is more comfortable on stage than anywhere else, allowing for an unpredictable and dynamic show.

GARRETT CLARK

Although he speaks a bit funny, he does consider himself a Canadian comic… just a bit confused. Being Canadian born, but Australian raised, Garrett is able to bring a very unique angle to his comedy (that of a Vegemite eating hockey fan) and in turn, is proving to be one of Canada’s fastest rising stars. Frequently touring from Hawaii to Halifax, and from Sydney to St John’s, Garrett has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in comedy, including Jamie Kennedy and Russell Peters.

Discovering Levi Stephens’ music is like enjoying a surprisingly great meal at the local cafe you’ve passed a thousand times before finally deciding to stop in. You thought you knew what you were getting into, but this is something more. It’s refreshing --a pleasant surprise that a new artist in an industry plagued by dying creativity chooses to follow in the tradition of those classic singer- songwriters that came before. With each song he writes, Levi’s goal is timelessness. “I feel like that kind of music will always have a place and staying power” he says. His songs explore a variety of relevant subjects while including the elements that always stand the test of time; musicianship, strong lyrics, and shared experiences. This line of thought is even reflected in the cover songs that Levi chooses to perform. He has a special gift that pulls people in as they listen and love the sound of Levi Stephens.

Andrew O’Brien and Catherine Allan’s earnest blend of acoustic folk/pop and roots has been gaining them significant critical and popular praise. Bare-bones arrangements and delicate, quietly assured harmony allows for the intimate musical conversations that have made their live shows so endearing and memorable. They perform with the openheartedness of two people that live the songs they sing and the vulnerability and closeness between them in performance is palpable.

The sea was angry that day my friends.. The waves crashing in on the shoreline.. The blazing hot sun beating down. All of a sudden in the shallows, a huge seashell crashes into the sand.. Another wave rolls in and smashes it against a giant log. It bursts open.. For a few seconds it was as if the world stopped.. the anticipation of what could be inside this peculiar vessel, even made the birds flying by hold their breath. Then as the earth seems to start spinning again, like a phoenix from the flames, out of it rises the golden blonde hair of Russ Dawson.

Since releasing “My name is Amos”, his debut album in 2008, Joannides has grown leaps and bounds not only as a singer, songwriter, musician, but perhaps most importantly as a performer. He has toured Canada performing for live television audiences, logged well over a thousand gigs, put himself in situations that he knew would inform him and give him the experience he needed to bring his music forward in confidence and style. He has discovered over these last few years who he really is as an artist and performer. What sets Amos apart from other musicians is his live performance. While his voice has hints of Martin Sexton’s soulful passion and Bobby McFerrin’s tonal quality and playfulness, it is as unique as Rod Stewart’s. His eclectic and ever-evolving musical style crosses genres a la Peter Gabriel keeping his audience - who have come to expect the unexpected - mesmerized.

Being the center of attention came easily to Zolo, and his athletic skill soon piqued the interest of the Canadian men’s national soccer team. Still, it was the passing of his father that had the most profound influence on the artist, and that motivated him to pursue his ultimate goal: to become a Dance/Pop recording artist.

ZOLO

With his profile on the rise, Zolo has released a Dance-Tape “LOST”, a fulllength collection of in-the-red party jams that perfectly encapsulates the artist’s playful club culture vibe. Blending futuristic beats with that unassailable boom-bap head-nod quality and familiar strains of house, Jones has crafted a critically-acclaimed brand of urban music that speaks to his eclectic upbringing in one of the most multicultural cities in the world. His infectious charisma at live shows can be in part attributed to the early influence of his father, Deadly Hedley an influential DJ in Toronto’s club scene. After releasing his 2006 debut, One Chance, as his graduating thesis at McMaster University, Jones began working on his 2009 sophomore release, Runaway Jones. Featuring some of the top players in Canada’s hip hop scene, including Boi-1da, Black Milk, Percee P, Kae Sun and Shad K, the album charted at number three on iTunes Canada and received sync placements on CBS’s CSI: Las Vegas, ABC’s Rookie Blue and on the 2010 CTV Olympic Broadcast. While garnering international acclaim, the album won Jones a Toronto Independent Music Award for “Song of the Year” and a prize for the 2010 Billboard Song Contest. In addition to his activities as a DJ, producer, singer/ songwriter and owner of Mojo Records and Publishing, Jones is a contributing affiliate of the creative group AMDcollective, which has produced most of his unique visuals both photo and video.
