It seems that these days even the smallest of towns are home to at least one Chinese restaurant, usually a buffet. Though many people have opened their minds and their palates to Chinese cuisine, some are still hesitant to try other variations of Asian cuisine. Apiwat “Joe” Yindeeroop of Touch of Thai recognizes this fact and encourages would-be patrons, “Don’t be intimidated.” Yindeeroop stresses that Touch of Thai has a knowledgeable wait staff that are happy to guide you through your dining experience. “They almost work as consultants, asking you what kinds of foods and flavors you like, and help you find something you’ll enjoy.” Touch of Thai, located at 221 First Street in Dixon, is a family-run restaurant and sushi bar which opened in 2007. For the past four years, Touch of Thai has been bringing city flair to the small town of Dixon. They have been serving up everything from more conventional fare such as Crab Rangoon, Eggrolls, and Pad Thai to more exotic menu items such as Hawaiian Fried Rice which includes unique ingredients like pineapple, cashews, and raisins. Their menu also boasts a wide variety of soups, salads, and noodles, as well as many curry and rice dishes.

Though Yindeeroop still finds himself commuting back and forth from his native Chicago to the business’ location in Dixon, he is quick to express his love for the Sauk Valley area. “It’s a change of pace, but it’s a good change of pace. There are much nicer folks here.” Yindeeroop enjoys the slower pace which has allowed the business, and the family too, to become a staple of downtown Dixon. Business is all but booming, even in a struggling economy. He notes, “It’s a credit to our patrons.” Yindeeroop is proud of the diversity among his workers. Despite the menu being Thai, the workers are from many different backgrounds. Yindeeroop expresses a great satisfaction in the community that is being fostered and the relationships that are being built. The camaraderie among the workers and many of the patrons is something that you’d only get in an area like the Sauk Valley, but even here it is a rare gem. With community in mind, Touch of Thai is not one to shy away from making donations to fundraisers and benefits for those in need. “I feel like we are always involved in the community,” Yindeeroop happily asserts. Touch of Thai is open from 11:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 11:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. They are closed on Sunday. COME CHECK OUT THEIR NEWLY REMODELED INTERIOR!

It was a solemn vow I made last year that I would tackle the projects and duties of the fall season with aplomb and a thoroughness that has not accompanied me in the years previous. So, with car keys in hand, my inner mind dictated I tackle those tasks of lesser frustration, the perfect pumpkin, vibrant chrysanthemums for the doorstep, frightening decorations for the trick-or-treaters and, of course, leaf bags. Picking the easier of tasks, easier, my foot, it took me an hour to get the kids into the car to accompany me on my autumn journey and another half an hour to stop the bickering in the backseat with threats just short of shipping them off to the camp for kids who will never see Santa Claus again if they don’t shape up. Leaf bags no problem, only they came accompanied with whines of “buy me this daddy” which consisted of arms loaded with various high sugar treats, great little “fun size” portions, I find nothing fun about a candy that takes longer to unwrap than to melt in the mouth. Loaded with leaf bags and bags of candy it was on to the farmer’s market for that perfect pumpkin that, when carved, would make us the envy of the block once it was sitting on the front step. Who knew the selection would be in the millions with the kids each picking a different one and then arguing the attributes of each and why the other one’s was “stupid.” Once again the necessity of being a peace maker, the solution was obvious. With a flat -bed cart and each child’s favorite pumpkin sitting on its surface it was time to pay the piper. Not so, you had to pass through the squash section which added another ten ovoid, hard skinned objects to the cart. My problem was seeing these wonderful bounties of nature not in their natural state but steaming on the table, loaded with brown sugar and other spices ready for devouring, like that was going to happen. Oh, and in addition to all of this, the kids found more candy. Next, on to the nursery for those perfectly shaped and blossoming chrysanthemums again for the front step to soften the shock of the most frighteningly carved pumpkin. At this point the kids lost all interest in the outing and were shaking from the lack of a computer game controller in their hands. This was dad’s time and I took it grabbing the first plants inside the gate. Yet, before we could leave it was mandatory we all walk the corn maze designed for kids to run screaming through while parents wandered around in our normal state, confused, both at where we were and how much this thing cost. Finally with the plants and money on the counter I knew I could count on the kids, yep, they found yet more candy. With the trunk full the trip home each kid sat in the rear of the car with a chrysanthemum on their laps and a look on their face that would stop the devil in his tracks and think twice. Once home and the car unloaded with the back seat looking like the aftermath of a flower girl convention. The kids shot off to various electronic games and I was eager to tackle the tasks at hand. I changed into my Brooks Brothers work apparel, once again we must think of the impression we make on the block. Looking, minus the gun, a little like Elmer Fudd on the hunt, it was time to tackle the last and most difficult task on my list, gathering the leaves in the yard. I had been informed by my neighbors not to treat them like last year where I sat the lawn mower on the lowest setting possible and left the clippings to migrate into their yards with the first wind. I gathered leaf blower, rake, newly purchased leaf bags and a shovel. I’m not really positive why the shovel, certainly there were going to be no leaf thieves to whack around but just in case. Once getting the idea after a half-an-hour not to start downwind of the yard it was as easy as eating corn on the cob, one row at a time. Half way through the yard, three blisters and a sliver later it was break time, time to recharge the energy level. Upon my return to the yard I found the kids taking a break from their torturing animated creature only to be playing in the leaf piles and scattering them to what seemed like three counties. Oh well, at least there wasn’t any candy connection. Finally, leaves all gathered, half for the second time, it was now the process of inserting them into the leaf bags. This is akin to trying to wrestle an eight foot alligator into a matchbox. Organization was what was called for, so, once again, leaves into piles, place the bags over the top and simply push the leaves in. Piles and piles of leaves were accumulated on the lawn and I headed in pursuit of the bags. I made sure the kids were in the house, a satisfying safety precaution, only to return and find three of the neighbor’s dogs bounding from one pile to the other in pursuit of some imaginary quarry. In frustration I grabbed the keys to the lawn mower, set the blade on kill and tore across Step 1: Write a story about something, anything, be creative! the yard like I was setting the land speed record at in the salt flats. Let the leaves Step 2: Submit it, your name & fall where they will. I had totally forgotten the frightening decorations, that the phone number, to pumpkins had yet to be carved and I had a lot of large bags to figure out how to dbdshowcase@gmail.com. use. Two things were learned from this never to be fall tradition. One it was easStep 3: Check out our monthly ier to deal with neighbor’s complaints about my leaf maintenance than what I had publication to see if your story was been though and two, after coming home from gathering the second set of forgotchosen to be published! ten item on my list, I could have hired all of this done with what I had spent on Step 4: Win a gift certificate candy. However, I did have nice bonding time with the kids but didn’t realize to a local place! we would be bonded by sugar. ©2011 Maran Agency, Inc.

By JoAnn Derson ¥ Using your fireplace? Try adding citrus peels to the logs for a nice aroma. They can be a good starter material as well. ¥ Those hide-a-key rocks can be a little obvious -- at least they are to me. I have a spare key hidden outside too, but I sealed mine in a plastic baggie and buried it in a spot known only to our family members. Also, it’s not right by the door. -- I.E. in Mississippi ¥ When closing up our cabin for the season, we brought a box of mothballs and scattered them around the porch perimeter. This keeps small animals like mice and skunks from setting up shop there while no one is around. -- S.F. in Pennsylvania ¥ Now’s a great time to start weatherstripping! Check and recaulk windows. Caulk along baseboards to deter drafts. Add insulation to electrical outlets and under sinks around plumbing. In the winter, if your house is on the dry side, don’t use the fan at all: Open the door so the humidity from the shower or bath reaches into the house. ¥ “To remove the skin from salmon, I freeze it and skin it while frozen. (SPM Wire) Diet soda may not be a good weapon in your battle of the bulge. So says two new studies that indicate diet soda may contribute to larger waistlines and even to diabetes. Two studies presented at a recent conference held by the American Diabetes Association indicate that diet soda may be free of calories but not of consequences. Epidemiologists from the School of Medicine at The University of Texas reported data showing diet soda consumption is associated with increased waist circumference in humans, and a second study found aspartame raised blood sugar in diabetes-prone mice.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver ¥ It was 19th-century American humorist Josh Billings who made the following sage observation: “Don’t mistake pleasure for happiness. They’re a different breed of dog.” ¥ Those who study such things say that the immortal bard, William Shakespeare, used a grand total of 17,677 words in his works. (That must have been a tedious calculation.) They also say that fully one-tenth of those words had never been used in writing before. ¥ If you’re like the average American, you eat approximately 10 pounds of chocolate every year. ¥ You might be surprised to learn that the first automobile insurance policy was sold way back in 1897. One Gilbert J. Loomis of Dayton, Ohio, was evidently concerned about the potential damage that could be done by his newly acquired car, so he got general liability protection in case driving his car resulted in someone’s death or injury, or in case property was damaged. ¥ High-quality opals can be more valuable than diamonds. ¥ If you are of a certain age, you might remember that in the mid-1960s, root beerflavored milk was available for purchase. Then again, you might not; the marketing experiment was a flop and the product was pulled in short order. ¥ When people who are blind from birth dream, they don’t see images; instead, they hear and feel the dream. For this reason, it’s said that their dreams can seem much more real. Those who become blind later in life do see images in their dreams, but the images fade the longer they live without sight. ¥ In the early 1900s, the average American got about nine hours of sleep every night. (I presume that statistic excludes the parents of new babies, who have been sleep-deprived since time immemorial.) *** Thought for the Day: “Fear is the tax that conscience pays to guilt.” -- George Sewell

(SPM Wire) It’s time to test your vehicle’s battery and replace it if necessary, to avoid being stranded this season. Sooner or later all batteries have to be replaced. To get the most life out of a battery, the Car Care Council suggests the following: Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging. If your battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check it regularly. Add distilled water when necessary. Always replace a battery with one that’s rated at least as high as the one originally specified. Keep the battery top clean. Dirt becomes a conductor, draining power. Corrosion becomes an insulator, inhibiting current flow.

The cool crisp days of fall immediately bring to mind comfort foods and there are sooooo many to choose from. One of my favorite flavors is PUMPKIN and with Thanksgiving right around the corner I decided to share another IMPRESSIVE yet EASY dish that will turn heads at your holiday table. Mini Pumpkins filled with Sausage Dressing Begin by purchasing a dozen mini pumpkins that are often mixed with gourds as fall decorations. Wash and cut as if you were carving a pumpkin, making a removable top and cleaning out the seeds and stringy center. *Use an ice cream scoop to get it nice and clean. Rinse and set aside. Then to make it simple I prepare a packaged stuffing mix adding sautéed onions, celery and a pound of browned pork sausage. Once all the stuffing ingredients are mixed drop a pat of butter in the bottom of the pumpkins and fill with the mixture. Put another pat of butter on the top and replace the cute little star hats. *For shiny pumpkins

spray with Pam before baking.

Place pumpkins in a shallow dish with 1/4” of water in the bottom and cover with tin foil. Bake @ 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until the pumpkin is easily pierced with a fork.

To serve place on platter and garnish with fresh cranberries or rosemary!

To Save Money

(StatePoint) As the thermometer drops, the cost of heating your home will rise. But you can avoid a spike in your blood pressure with a few smart moves that will help you save on those energy bills.

The average American household spends at least $2,000 a year on energy bills -- over half of which goes to heating and cooling, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Program. Luckily, there are several ways you can save on your energy bills this season: • Install a programmable thermostat to help ensure that you do not forget to adjust the temperature in your home throughout the day. Regulating your thermostat can amount to real savings while keeping you warm during the winter months. • When replacing appliances around your home remember to ask about natural gas models. Natural gas water heaters and other appliances are typically much more efficient than other versions and will help cut energy costs during the winter heating season. • Make sure to have all furnaces, flues and chimneys in your home or business inspected every year by qualified industry professionals to ensure their efficiency and safety. These are items that will no doubt be kicked into gear during the cold winter months, so it’s important they’re all in working order when the temperatures drop. • Keep the areas around all natural gas appliances clean and unblocked to allow for proper air flow. • Don’t forget to insulate your attic floor. Installation should be 16 to 24 inches deep in temperate climates. This simple home improvement will keep you warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. • Look for the blue flame. If pilot lights and burners have a steady, blue flame, they are operating correctly. (Decorative gas fire logs are the only exception. Their flame is usually yellow.) • Anytime you make changes to your home, from servicing a fuel-burning appliance to changing your windows, always have a licensed expert make sure that all your equipment is operating properly -- safety is important all year round. For more information on how you can save on home energy bills, visit www.comfortableresponsible.org. Just a few of these changes will help reduce your impact on the planet -- and your wallet.
