German-born artist Vivian Kahra explores “momentariness” – the state of impermanence and continuity and the transformation of the natural world into an architecture of memory. Kahra applies thin layers of watercolor paint on canvas; her light touch and use of negative space let the paintings “breathe” - the paper and canvas hardly touched. She often depicts figures, seen or unseen, caught in a moment, or moving through time and space – sometimes the narrative includes skateboarding and skiing, swimming, or introspective moments of stillness of figures in nature.

STATEMENT

My painting explores different ways to approach momentariness – the state of impermanence and continuity – and transformation of the natural world into an architecture of memory, feelings and inner motion. A slow and quiet process of painting allows me to capture this transformation on canvas or paper. I apply thin layers of paint that stay open and ‘breathe,’ like a membrane or skin, moving and changing as the painting develops. The pure canvas and paper are important parts of the composition, often only lightly touched. In the final phase of painting, I apply oil color, which closes the pores of the canvas and fixes the painting, holding it in memory, lengthening the moment while physically moving on. The oil might capture a figure, seen or unseen, caught in the moment, or moving through the air and trees and structures of human and natural landscapes. My paintings speak to the accumulation of moments that have quickly passed, the fleeting nature of experiences we can barely discern.
