STATEMENT I often use portraiture and found objects to create work that explores gender and ideas about the “American West.” Through drawing, painting, and installation, my work often deploys iconic “western” imagery — buffalo, weaponry, fringe, etc. — to investigate dominant narratives about the region, narratives that often ignore its complicated and violent history. Simultaneously, this work also reflects my personal relationship with the landscape, people, and culture of Wyoming - a place that is both exotic and home to me. In much of my figurative work I strived to create semi-realistic representations of the women in my life, that show both my personal relationship to my subjects as well as my concerns about the treatment of the female figure in Art and Popular Culture. In both my oil portraits and ink paintings I struggle to create women who play with and challenge our notions of how women should behave and be seen.
