Should you leave the Corporate World and Start a Business?

At some point in our lives, most of us dream of leaving the corporate world and starting our own business. We love the idea of not having to punch a clock and having to answer to someone else. But investing in your own business is not a step to be taken lightly. And it’s not something you should do merely to escape a bad situation at work. Owning your own business can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but it has also led many to financial ruin. So how do you know if it is right for you? Here are a few tips to consider before striking out on your own. Is there evidence that your business idea can work?

Before starting your own business, you want to know whether there are enough people out there who are willing to pay for your product or service for you to make a living. Some businesses, such as SignWorld, offer proven business models and support, while others can be a larger risk. Doing a bit of market research can be an important first step in determining whether a particular business is a good idea, and it can save you a lot of money and heartache in the long run. Are you prepared to live on a shoestring budget for a couple of years? Even if you don’t love your job, there is something to be said for having a reliable paycheck. Businesses that make money right away are “unicorns”. Most business owners need to live frugally for the first couple years as they must invest in capital and it can take a while to develop a customer base. How much money do you have in savings? And is it enough to tide you over for a few months until your business starts to turn a profit? Having a good personal financial strategy in place can make the idea of quitting your job and starting a business a lot more comfortable. Are you a problem solver? No one goes into business knowing it all. Problems and challenges that you did not anticipate are bound to arise, and you’ll have to figure out how to deal with them. Working with a business model such as SignWorld, will give you access to some support, but even then you’ll need to feel comfortable dealing with some challenges on your own. Are you willing to make sacrifices? Especially in the beginning, owning your own business can take up a lot of your time and resources. Rarely is business ownership and Monday to Friday, 9-5 venture. Instead, you’ll likely need to give up a lot of evenings and weekends, forgoing time with friends and family until your business has some momentum behind it. Owning your own business can be wonderfully rewarding. It can give you a greater income and more flexibility and freedom. But before it gives these things, it will usually take these things. If you’re willing to buckle down and do what it takes to make it through the early stages however, it might just be time to leave the corporate world and start a business.
