Reuben Rainey | January 2017 - May 2017 • Discovered the different processes that goes into both garden design and green spaces. • Took studio project and develop a more in-depth study and dove further in the design process on how a hospital setting can become even more rejuvenating.
RESEARCH STUDIO I | A RIVER MONASTERY
WG Clark | August 2016 - December 2016 • Gained research skills and prepared computer aided drawings such as plans, sections, and axonometrics to create a system of presenting works. • Started building models to provide a better understanding of how the site works and the different elements that go into the design process.
BREAKING BIM | MONTEBELLO 321
Seth McDowell | August 2016 - December 2016 • Acquired knowledge of Revit and its project interface, as well as parametric dimensioning analysis within the family editor. • Obtained experience in both Revit rendering techniques and Adobe Photoshop, and learned to utilize each program’s distinct customization components.

The focus for my design project is the integration of both long and short term housing as well as community programs within a building that evokes rejuvenation. Rejuvenation is the process of healing or restoring both the mind and body through sensory environments. What makes a space therapeutic depends on both its placement and materiality. Traveling to the upper levels, the floors become less and less dense where an evokative “scaffolding structure starts to transpire. Circulation also becomes apparent because not only do paths but also multiple community spaces start to appear on each floor for inhabitants to partake in. Community Space 1" Curtain Wall

By pushing the existing parking garage underground, it allowed me to not only conceal parking but also unlock opportunities to create more aesthetically restorative places. Several spaces within my structure serves as “healing spaces. The floors also connect to the housing areas which are organized along the west and east end of the site to allow for maximum visibility of the surrounding areas. The floors are divided by their housing type, whether it is either long or short stay. The housing units go up to the roof where one is able to interact with the rooftop garden. This rooftop garden serves as a place of rejuvenation where inhabitants can take a break from the structure and be a part of nature. The gardens become healing spaces and are open to both the public and the residents of the building.

Effective Space
Approaching the second floor, an art gallery emerges where various works are displayed for viewing by the public. By simply observing different artwork can stimulate the mind in a powerful way.
5
OUTDOOR AREA
Enclosed with glass, the space not only allows light to transmit through but also in itself act as a healing element through its transparent nature.

Location:
Chapel Island in Richmond,VA
The River Monastery emerges from nature as not only a social condenser for monks but a destination for the city inhabitants. Because of its verticality, each floor is divided to satisfy the necessities of a monastery as well as encourage interaction between the monks. The monastery is placed stategically to line up orthogonally to a certain gathering space in the city.

Space exists in many dimensions, whether it occupies a boundary within a structure or it flows freely in the atmosphere. Throughout the site, the space between interior and exterior becomes blurred where little pockets of courtyards are positioned central to the units of a building, not only allowing a circulation of air but also people. The courtyards are then taken into a larger scale where it is applied throughout the whole block.
