RESEARCH WELLBEING Wellbeing is not defined as just one thing but rather several things working in conjunction with another to give an overall sense of wellness. The topic of wellbeing and wellness has grown exponentially over the recent years because mental health has proven to play a predominant role in almost all things. Mental health involves how we are psychologically, emotionally, and socially and combined attributes the most to our overall wellbeing. “Well-being has been defined as the combination of feeling good and functioning well; the experience of positive emotions such as happiness and contentment as well as the development of one’s potential, having some control over one’s life, having a sense of purpose, and experiencing positive relationships.” states Kai Rugger when defining wellbeing. Wellbeing can be broken down into pillars or dimensions. The pillars of wellbeing are physical, emotional, financial, social, environmental, intellectual, spiritual, and occupational (University of Wisconsin System 2021.) Overall, how we feel about our surroundings and inside matter; our wellbeing is not just one thing but several pieces that come together like a puzzle.

NATUROPATHY Naturopathy is an alternative way of practicing medicine and therapy and promotes natural healing. Naturopathy has been shown through observations, interviews, and studies to help the body naturally heal. Natural remedies can be helpful for not only physical ailments but also mental and emotional. “The goal of naturopathic medicine is to treat the whole person -- that means mind, body, and spirit. It also aims to heal the root causes of an illness -- not just stop the symptoms. Naturopathic medicine is a system that uses natural remedies to help the body heal itself. It embraces many therapies, including herbs, massage, acupuncture, exercise, and nutritional counseling.” More recently, many practice combinations of modern science with traditional treatments. A naturopathic visit typically entails reviewing your health history, stress levels, and lifestyle habits and at times ordering lab tests. A provider discusses a personal health plan for you that tends to focus heavily on education and prevention, so your doctor may give you diet, exercise, or stress management tips. A variety of treatments may be executed from homeopathy to herb use.

OUR STORY

Findings reveal that naturopathic medicine and therapy is successful in naturally healing various afflictions and with a lack of access to this in the Hattiesburg area, it is evident it is needed. Sisters Tate Kasimir and Carter Vinn will be opening Sweet Serenity for naturopathic healing because they want to fill the void of natural therapy. When noticing a lack of naturopathy in the Hattiesburg area but an increasing interest rising, a pair of sisters decided to open a family-owned naturopathic practice. Sisters Tate Kasimir and Carter Vinn will be opening Sweet Serenity for naturopathic healing. Dr. Tate Kasimir has a traditional background in the medical field but when her younger sister Carter Vinn started struggling with health issues while pregnant and looking for more natural remedies Dr. Kate shifted her practice. Dr. Tate wanted to find clean and pure alternatives that could help her sister. In the long process of doing so, this pair of sisters saw amazing results and wanted to share their tips with others and even started curating their own line of products.. They have decided they want to open up in Downtown Hattiesburg and the perfect location is the Komp Building.

HISTORY AND PRESERVATION THE KOMP George Komp, originally from Indianapolis, came to Hattiesburg for work at a machine shop since businesses of that sort were booming at that time. In 1907 Komp opened his own shop that did well enough to inspire further expansion. Construction began and thus the Komp Building was created. The Komp building stands three stories tall, each floor boasting 14-foot-high ceilings. The building is lined with large windows and all original architecture still in place. Unfortunately, the Komp Building no longer houses Komp Equipment Company. As time moved on and the trajectory of Hattiesburg and what was thriving shifted many older businesses faded but the architecture and history still remains. “Dating back to 1908, The Komp remains one of the most important buildings in downtown Hattiesburg. It is listed as a "contributing resource" in the Hub City National Register District.” (Jones, Elijah.) The Komp Building, now simply, The Komp, will be renovated like many other historical downtown buildings to give them new life while still preserving history. This is a large undertaking to rebirth The Komp, but many original elements will remain to keep authenticity.

PRESERVATION While the new and exciting future that awaits the Komp will usher in a fresh modern sophistication, it is of the upmost importance to preserve certain original qualities of the building. The exterior and framing of the building will not change. All original wood, sourced locally, as well as the windows, vault, grand staircase, and elevators will remain. The building has been approved to be renovated by architect James Polk with the intention to convert the second and third floors to apartment living spaces and the first floors designs will be for businesses. Historical buildings and landmarks are vital pieces of history and even in their renovations to give them new life and purpose, preservation will always be a priority. The Komp building stands in a location with close proximity to the train, local small businesses, restaurants and entertainment making it a prime spot. The Komp building certainly will be a display of designing to combine the past and the present to create a new.

GOALS & CONCEPT 1. PRESERVATION To preserve certain elements of historical significance and integrity of the building. To keep the grand staircase, windows, vault, and elevator all intact but update them to fit the surrounding renovated areas while maintaining their originality.

2. ACCESIBILITY & WAYFINDING To create good circulation and make navigating the building easy for employees and guests. Also ensuring the building is accessible for all and align with ADA guidelines and is designed closely following universal design so there are little limitations for guests of any variety.

3. ACOUSTICS To reduce echo or sound issues within the interior space. Utilize sound absorbing materials to balance the sound such as acoustical ceiling treatments and wall treatments and soft seating as well as sound barrier wall and ceiling treatments.

DESIGN CONCEPT STATMENT Cultivating a naturopathic clinic that will offer a safe, calm and welcoming environment to all that promotes natural healing of the mind, body, and soul. Serenity Naturopathic Wellness will offer a variety of services to aid in curating a better wellbeing and cater to individuals’ unique needs and concerns. This design will transform a space to visually provide comfort, safety, and trigger relaxation and healing. Utilizing calming warm toned colors, an array of patterns and textures, soft dimmable lighting and more to make the space more relaxing and appealing to the eyes. Services will range from consultations, herbal and dietary therapy, acupuncture, body analysis, homeopathy, counseling therapy and more. The clinic will also sell custom all natural products.

PLUMBING SECTION

SECTIONS

Throughout the entire Komp Building's renovations to transition into Serenity Holistic Healing, sound was taken into great consideration. A combination of acoustical wall treatments, updating wall ratings, and using soft surfaces to absorb sound were utilized. Acoustic treatments are solutions that help to absorb or diffuse sound to improve the acoustic quality of a space. These treatments come in various forms, and some facilities may need multiple types of treatments to achieve the ideal acoustics for the space. To the right are detail drawings of acoustical wall sections throughout the building to help manage sound for priavcay and other concerns.
