MAKING AN IMPACT // Annual Scientista Women in STEM Career Event KSU hosts an annual Scientista, a daylong recruitment event for high schoolers and their parents to learn more about STEM career opportunities and related degree programs. Students from throughout the state participate in panel discussions, tours and interactive STEM activities.

Minutes from major city of Atlanta – and home to 18 Fortune 500 companies, including The Home Depot, UPS, The Coca-Cola Company, Delta Air Lines, First Data Corporation, Newell Brands, Inc., and more. More than one-third of KSU’s 35,000 students are STEM Majors. Diverse: KSU has ranked among the nation’s top producers of African-American graduates in computer and information sciences, math, statistics and engineering for the past five years.

“It’s interesting to see how science and math apply in careers,” said Julia Bush, a sophomore at Hiram High School in Paulding County. “I liked talking with those who are already pursuing STEM careers.”

CHRISTOPHER ROPER

KATERINA SLAVICINSKA

3rd Place National Society of Black Engineers Technical Research Exhibition

Winner of Top Poster Award at the Birla Carbon Symposium

Christopher is a mechanical engineering and physics major at KSU and was honored for his aerospace engineering research.

Katerina won the top prize for her research project entitled, “Designing a Liquid-Solid Cell for in Situ Analysis of Nucleoside Phosphorylation by Schreibersite.” She worked beside her faculty mentor, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Heather AbbottLyon, in the Abbott-Lyon Laboratory (ALL).

“I wanted to determine the best flight conditions for this specific engine,” Roper said. “When we know these best values, and by doing experimental and computational demonstrations, we can determine how efficient the engine aircraft will travel.”

DEJA TYLA JACKSON

“I’m interested in space and the origins of life, “ Slavicinska said. “I really enjoyed the research project this summer and how interdisciplinary it was.”

KURT JACOBSON

Received the Women Techmakers Scholarship Award (a Google for Education program)

Georgia Engineering Technology Student of the Year - 2016

Deja Tyla is a computer science student in the College of Computing and Software Engineering. The scholarship award recognizes Ms. Jackson’s strong academic record, exemplary leadership and demonstrated passion to increase the involvement of women in computer science.

“Kurt has collaborated with industry and has designed and fabricated various machineries. He is currently in the process of getting a patent for the CNC tubing notcher machine that he designed,” said Simin Nasseri, associate professor of mechanical engineering.

Nine KSU students were honored at the 2016 STEM Innovators Conference in Savannah, Georgia. The students are Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance Minority Participation (LSAMP) Scholars.
