Musicology, Ethnomusicology, Composition, Theory, & Applied Studies Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) may choose from five concentrations: Musicology, Ethnomusicology, Composition, Theory, and Applied Studies. BA faculty members are recognized teachers, scholars, composers, and performers. While at KSU, students experience a wide variety of activities in addition to applied lessons and ensembles. These include premieres of original compositions, presentations and publications of scholarly research, foreign language study, and a senior seminar capstone project. Students interested in pursuing both music and non-music coursework are encouraged to consider this degree. Recent graduates have advanced to prestigious graduate schools and have used skills gained in their degree study to succeed in a wide range of careers.

Music Education The Music Education program is committed to creating leading educators. Music education students work with professors who have university and public school experience in over ten states. Our faculty features specialists and mentors in each of the four concentrations: Choral, General, Instrumental, and Orchestra education. This professional degree leads to P-12 teacher certification in the teaching field of music in Georgia. Your four years at KSU will be challenging and musically enriching, creating memories that will forever change you and how you think about music. The faculty and staff are here to support and assist you in making your experience individualized and meaningful for a rewarding teaching career. Piano Pianists in the School of Music may pursue any of our three degree programs: B.A. in Music, B.M. in Performance, or B.M. in Music Education. Students are taught by our exceptional piano faculty, all of whom are active performers as well as teachers. Many of our students successfully compete in local, state, and national competitions and have opportunities for frequent recital performances, both on and off campus. Further, our students are regularly accepted into notable schools of music for graduate studies. Certified as an All-Steinway School, the School of Music offers our students collaborative piano experiences and master class performance opportunities with internationally-acclaimed pianists. Recent and upcoming guests include Jean Yves Thibaudet, Jeremy Denk, Alessio Bax, Yakov Kasman, Simone Dinnerstein, and Ian Hobson.

Jazz

Students interested in jazz may take advantage of our instrumental and vocal jazz performance concentration as part of the Bachelor of Music in Performance degree. The jazz concentration is comprehensive and includes courses specific to the jazz idiom in history, theory, arranging, improvisation, performing, and pedagogy. Our jazz majors and faculty are active in metro Atlanta and the Southeast jazz scenes, mixing university experience with real-world performing opportunities and training. The KSU Jazz Ensembles I and II and Jazz Combos develop general jazz performance and improvisational skills, giving students the flexibility to meet the varying demands of today’s musical world. Recent performances have included programs of Brazilian and Latin jazz, swing concerts, music from musical theatre, jazz rock, and retrospectives of composers such as Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Count Basie, and others. KSU jazz ensembles and combos have performed at the Jazz Education Network Conference, the Georgia Music Educator’s Association In-Service Conference, the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards, and the International Festival of University Theatre of Casablanca, as well as performances in Montepulciano, Italy. Recent graduates are currently performing internationally with The Count Basie Orchestra, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, and on Broadway.

Voice, Opera, & Choirs Voice study at KSU provides an atmosphere of excellence in the development of the vocal artist. Voice majors receive individual instruction and studio master classes from our outstanding voice faculty in addition to courses in music theory, music history, language and diction study, vocal and opera literature, vocal pedagogy, conducting, and opera training. Today’s singers must be versatile, creative and self-promoting, so we offer music business and entrepreneurship seminars. Voice majors sing in full operatic productions with orchestra, as well as opera scenes. Recent opera productions include Pasatieri’s Hotel Casablanca, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe, Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Stephan Paulus’ The Three Hermits. Our singers participate in master classes with guest artists from the Atlanta Opera and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and with notable international artists.

Choral ensembles acquaint students with a wide variety of music and styles both as choral members and as oratorio soloists. Our singers perform with a variety of both chamber and large ensembles, including the KSU Symphony Orchestra. Our award-winning choirs have performed at Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conferences as well as State, Southern Divisional, and National American Choral Directors Association Conferences and the National Collegiate Choral Organization. Our choral program includes diverse academic disciplines from across the KSU campus. Many of our voice graduates have won scholarships to prestigious music schools across the country and several have won scholarships for study in national and international summer programs, such as the International Performing Arts Institute in Germany.

Winds & Percussion At the School of Music, students who play wind and percussion instruments may choose from applied concentrations in flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, or percussion. Students regularly have opportunities to perform chamber music and study with faculty who perform in the top professional ensembles across the region, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Our Wind Ensemble performs a wide variety of classic and new works for winds and recently hosted the Southeast Regional College Band Directors Association/National Band Association Conference.

The Wind Ensemble was also recently selected to perform at the College Band Director’s National Association Regional Conference in Charleston, S.C. Wind and percussion students also have the opportunity to participate in the Symphony Orchestra, a 70-member student ensemble that performs masterworks from the symphonic canon, as well as contemporary, pops, and game and film literature. Collaborations have included residencies with SĹ? Percussion, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet, Eighth Blackbird, Boston Brass, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, as well as several guest composers.

Strings The School of Music strings program offers applied concentrations in violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, and classical guitar. Students perform in a full symphony orchestra that has toured China and hosted the National Conference of the College Orchestra Directors Association. There is a vibrant chamber music program and the faculty perform and collaborate with the top performance organizations in the region. Many of our string music education students are involved in internships with the KSU String Project, which brings string instruction to regional 4th and 5th graders, as well as the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra. Our string majors have enjoyed recent master classes with several outstanding artists, including the Vega String Quartet, Aspen String Trio, Jennifer Koh, Stefan Jackiw, the Ying Quartet, Pacifica Quartet, David Coucheron, and Midori.

Marching Band “The Marching Owls” Marching Band strives be the largest, most visible student organization on our campus and has thrilled thousands of fans with exciting performances. The tradition of excellence was initiated in the Fall 2015 as “The Marching Owls” began performing at the highest levels of visual and musical performance at Fifth-Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, GA. At a school the size of the Kennesaw State University, it is important for new students to find their place within the college community. As a member of the “The Marching Owls,” you will be surrounded by friends before classes even begin. This “family” will provide a valuable support system throughout your college career, helping you adjust to life at Kennesaw State and create life-long friendships. You will have instant study partners as members of “The Marching Owls” represent almost every academic unit at the University, including the colleges and programs on the KSU Marietta Campus. “The Marching Owls” is open to all KSU students. Facilities As a student in the School of Music, you will enjoy a state-of-the-art performing arts venue: the Audrey S. Morgan Hall in the Dr. Bobbie Bailey and Family Performance Center. Full-scale production equipment complements the performance hall. You will practice in individual, soundproof practice rooms and learn with some of the latest music technology.
