KSFNM 2013 Residency Guide Kennesaw State Festival of New Music Residency Guide February 11 – 15, 2013 Dr. Bobbie Bailey & Family Performance Center The 2013 Kennesaw State Festival of New Music (KSFNM) celebrates the work of artists creating and performing the music of today. The 2013 festival presents a week full of various residency activities including masterclasses, seminars, demonstrations, and other presentations, in addition to the concerts presented nightly. Each activity will include an appearance by one or more of the festival’s featured composers or artists, each of whom will be in residence throughout the week. Activities like these allow festival participants the rare opportunity to gain insight and perspective on the world of new music directly from the artists creating and performing these works of art. KSFNM 2013 will highlight works by Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award-winner David Lang, featured guest composer of this year’s festival. David will be in residence at KSU for much of the festival and involved in many of the residency activities detailed below. DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS OF KSFNM 2013 RESIDENCY ACTIVITIES Monday, February 11, 2013 •Composition Masterclass: David Lang 4:00 p.m. | Wilson Building, Room 119 KSFNM featured composer David Lang will offer his insight and expertise to KSU student composers. Students will showcase their original compositions for David who will provide his thoughts and critical feedback on their work. Tuesday, February 12, 2013 •Presentation: David Lang, composer 1:00 p.m. | Brooker Rehearsal Hall Bailey Performance Center David Lang, featured composer of the 2013 Festival of New Music, will present recordings of several original compositions and will discuss the background, method, and inspiration for composing these pieces. Audience members will have the opportunity to interact with David and discuss topics related to new music and composition. Wednesday, February 13, 2013 •Panel Discussion: “Exploring the roles of the Composer and Performer” 4:00 p.m. | Music Building, Room 109 Composers David Lang and Michael Markowski will join artist/composers Jason Treuting and Josh Quillen of Sō Percussion for a panel discussion examining the roles and interaction of today’s composers and performers and issues related to composing for various ensembles. The discussion will be led by KSU composer-in-residence, Laurence Sherr. •Performance Masterclass: Sō Percussion 4:00 p.m. | Brooker Rehearsal Hall Bailey Performance Center Members of Sō Percussion, featured guest artists of the 2013 Festival of New Music, will work with students of the KSU School of Music percussion studio and will observe and instruct students performing in various combinations. Student percussion ensembles will perform repertoire written by new music composers for percussion, including the so-called laws of nature, a percussion quartet written by KSFNM featured composer David Lang for Sō Percussion.
Thursday, February 14, 2013 •Presentation: Sō Percussion 1:00 p.m. | Brooker Rehearsal Hall Bailey Performance Center Sō Percussion will play selections not found on Friday night’s program and will discuss topics relating to percussion performance, percussion ensemble repertoire, and their inspiration and approach to performing and writing new compositions. •Composition Masterclass: Michael Markowski 2:00 p.m. | Wilson Building, Room 108 Composer Michael Markowski will offer his insight and expertise to KSU student composers. Students will showcase their original compositions for Michael who will provide his thoughts and critical feedback on their work. Later that evening, Michael’s new composition, Remember the Molecules (2013), will receive its world premiere performance by the KSU Wind Ensemble. •Film Screening and Performance: The Woodmans, with Sō Percussion 4:00 p.m. | Don Russell Clayton Gallery Bailey Performance Center A fascinating, unflinching portrait of the late photographer Francesca Woodman, told through the young artist’s work (including experimental videos and journal entries) and remarkably candid interviews with her artist parents Betty and George (a ceramic sculptor and painter/photographer), who have continued their own artistic practices while watching Francesca’s professional reputation eclipse their own. The soundtrack of the film was written by KSFNM featured composer David Lang and performed by KSFNM artists Sō Percussion. Join us for a screening of the film in the Clayton Gallery in the Bailey Center on Thursday, February 14, preceded by a performance of an excerpt from the film score and a discussion by Sō Percussion.
