The Villa VPRO by MVRDV is a building with 10500 square metres of concrete floor area with minimal furnishing consisting of stone, steel, wood and the occasional rug. There exist very few walls to separate the internal spaces, epitomising the idea of an open plan enabled by pilotis. Voids tunnel through the floors connecting the multiple levels, creating double and triple ceiling heights within its already vast spaces. The expansion of space in both vertical and horizontal directions creates an atmosphere of freedom that complements the function of VPRO as a broadcasting company which promotes creativity. This atmosphere derived from spatial qualities originates not “the objects as such, but rather, the negative space defined by objects. These spaces are organised and planned in such a manner that encourages circulation and communication as they are visually and physically connected by voids and stairs. Space and circulation have become intertwined to create an atmosphere of energy, movement and productivity. It is this atmosphere created by the connections between spaces that are experienced rather than the materiality of the building alone.

The slope present in the north east corner of the Villa VPRO is subtle in its transition between the flat floor and the slope. In the blurring of boundaries, a certain ambiguity arises as to where one floor ends and the other begins. Therefore, folding, when defined in terms of bending to create a slope, does indeed integrate the two elements of slope and floor within a continuous surface.
