Simply Stunning Photography by Kevin McCollum
THE HOME: A Georgian property in Edinburgh’s New Town
T
he brief for this stunning room was to design a contemporary collection of freestanding/modular furniture that provided all the functions required of a kitchen but without “looking like a kitchen”. While it may sound like a high order designer John Angus from Murray & Murray was more than fit for it and delivered a scheme that is low key and unforgettable in equal measure. Using the period features in the room to counterbalance the striking
simplicity of his design helped John create a unique and artful look. He said: “Without the detailed panelling, cornice and original fireplace the scheme might feel a little too stark; it’s the juxtaposition of the traditional Georgian features with the simple, contemporary design that makes the project such a successful marriage of the two distinct styles.” In response to the extra height ceilings John designed the cabinetry to be slightly oversized to ensure the scale of the furniture was appropriate K&B SCOTLAND | 2017

to the proportions of the room. Two large windows offer a wonderful quality of light into the room and, by making use of the original shutters, the light can be effectively and easily managed. “The space can be both fantastically light and airy and intimate/dramatic by controlling the light in this traditional manner, said John.
18
K&B SCOTLAND | 2017
While the aesthetic is undeniably stunning the kitchen is also totally functional and hard working - it had to be to meet the demands of a busy family of five. One of the biggest challenges John faced was ensuring that the furniture was crafted in a way that allowed it to sit within the room without affecting/interfering with the

K I TC H E N S existing original features. The idea that the kitchen could be installed and removed without any impact upon the space is one that was central to the success of the scheme. Clean lines were crucial in the design and by placing the oven and microwave behind pocket doors the appliance sideboard looks like it’s nothing more than a piece of furniture, sitting neatly in the room. The kitchen is the first room that greets visitors and had to set the tone for the rest of the home. Describing it as “simple, quiet, elegant and understated with a focus” John has used a mix of materials to add colour, interest and visual appeal into the scheme. The solid oak parquet flooring is a nod to the home’s traditional heritage and works beautifully with both the light and dark tones in the room. Clever storage keeps the room fuss free and means it is maintained - a simple wipe around with a damp cloth is all to takes to keep it looking pristine.
THE DESIGNER John Angus “The brief for this project was to design a collection of contemporary freestanding pieces that provides all the functions required of a kitchen but without “looking like a kitchen”. In addition, each piece had to have the ability to be picked up and moved should the requirement be called upon. The juxtaposition of the traditional Georgian features of this property against the simplicity of the modular freestanding furniture is key in preventing the scheme from looking too stark or minimal.” Murray & Murray Edinburgh T: 0131 228 3153 Aberdeenshire T: 01330 823 543 Perthshire T: 01764 684 815 murrayandmurray.co.uk

THE HOME: A detached new build on the Scottish Borders
W
hen Shona and Jerry Ponder from Countryside Kitchens & Interiors had the opportunity to design the kitchen for their new build home they were able to create a room perfectly tailored to their own family. With six children, plus extended family members coming and going and numerous animals the couple wanted a scheme with good storage, plenty of foot space and a strong social aspect. While the new kitchen was always going to look the part it had to take centre stage as the heart of
the house, as the whole building was designed around it. The home has a fabulous view of the Borders’ countryside, and the orientation takes full advantage of this with southfacing French doors on the patio. “It was important for the space to feel very open, with plenty of room for socialising,” explained Shona. “We’ve had Christmas parties with 150 people, and this is really the hub of our house. It’s not unknown for us to have up to 20 people in the kitchen while I’m making lunch, and it still looks tidy!” While this was a new build property it is in a traditional style and Shona wanted a kitchen that was full of K&B SCOTLAND | 2017

warmth and character to complement the overall look of the home. A large island was a must, as was space for an Aga range cooker and good, easy to access storage. The island has been positioned to look over to the table and so that whenever anyone is preparing food or washing up they can enjoy the stunning views outside. At four and a half metres long it has a commanding presence in the room, with breakfast bar seating, kitchen sink and hot water tap. Drawers were chosen as the best way to maximise storage space for the lower units while the upper larder units were

THE DESIGNER Shona Ponder “Creating your dream kitchen is a rare opportunity to tailor everything to suit your family. We wanted it to take centre stage as the heart of the house, and the whole building was designed around it. We love entertaining and have a large family so wanted a room we could all be in and enjoy together. The island is a great social hub and we designed it with lots of light and space around it to really make it stand out as a focal point in the room.” Countryside Kitchens & Interiors The Corn Exchange 31 Woodmarket Kelso T: 01573 228030 countrysidekitchens.co.uk

THE HOME: A renovated farmhouse in Renfrewshire

fter living in their home for nearly 20 years this family of three was ready for a change. Situated in a rural location it was the fantastic views and open vistas out over fields and towards the hills that first attracted them to the property and 18 years on this hasn’t changed, so rather than move they decided to renovate. The previous kitchen didn’t make the best use of the space and the family longed for an island to give the
room a social hub and allow them to spend more time together in the same room. New appliances, better storage and a more logical plan to make meal preparation and cooking easier were other key requirements. After some time researching they began the process of looking for a kitchen design company. On recommendation they visited Kitchen International where they fell in love with a design in the showroom. After the initial consultation designer Paul O’Brien came up with a scheme K&B SCOTLAND | 2017

The owner said: “We wanted the kitchen to be much more spacious with a large island. When we first visited the Kitchen Internationals showroom we saw a beautiful oval island with glass breakfast bar and knew that was the look we wanted.” The island the couple originally spotted was much larger than their kitchen could accommodate but Paul adjusted the dimensions to fit the smaller space without sacrificing any of the design flair. Paul explained: “The island was the most important part of the design and along with having that all important ‘wow’ factor it also had to have a breakfast bar. THE DESIGNER Paul O’Brien “The client fell in love with the island in the showroom, but as it was quite large it was a challenge to create the same look as well as allowing for the right amount of space to allow the kitchen to function well. The island had to have a recessed glass breakfast bar built into the worktop which would be big enough to seat a minimum of three people. They also wanted the hob to sit on the island as they liked the idea of being able to cook as well as socialise with guests.” Kitchens International Aberdeen T: 01224 824300 Broxburn T: 01506 862780 Edinburgh T: 0131 5230477 Edinburgh T: 0131 3373434 Glasgow T: 0141 4047744 Tillicoultry T: 01259 237010 kitchensinternational.co.uk allowed us to create a bespoke shape which enabled us to design an island which best suited the room.” The choice of the Fusion Pure White cabinetry really emphasises the light in the room and it was Paul who suggested adding in the touches of Anthracite Oak to stop the scheme looking too solid and add in warmth. It also helps to marry the new contemporary elements with the property’s traditional facade. As a keen cook the owner had a good idea of what was needed in

terms of appliances. Two ovens were a must and placing the induction hob in the island means there is no need to turn your back on company when preparing dinner. “It was important that the space should work well ergonomically, in terms of where the main elements were located, and have lots of drawers so everything was close at hand,” she said. “Mostly I wanted it to be a very sociable space with a laidback, welcoming atmosphere.”

fter acquiring their beautiful period house this family set about creating a striking interior that fused the original beauty of the building with a contemporary and practical layout. The house had originally been two separate flats so a large renovation was needed to unite the ground and first floor into a spacious family home. When it came to choosing a kitchen for the new room the owners wanted a striking design that would sit proudly in its surroundings. Working
with Sculleries of Stockbridge they wanted a family friendly design with a sophisticated, furnished look. Managing director and designer Brian Minns said: “Our initial design brief was to create a period piece which would sit well within what is an outstanding room. Our client was involved and enthusiastic about the fine details and the result is a marriage of modern design and manufacture using period details and symmetry where possible to match the Georgian period features of the huge windows and high ceilings. The handpainted Tudor style K&B SCOTLAND | 2017

From the polished walnut internals to the handmade wicker toy boxes under the breakfast bar no detail has been overlooked. A bespoke mantel immediately catches the eye and works perfectly with the original period features. Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White on the cabinetry gives the room a fresh appeal while the choice of a deeper tone on the island (Down Pipe) adds depth and interest and the brighter shade of pigeon on the handmade swivel chairs mean the look is anything but predictable. Housing the main sink, dishwasher and hot water tap the island is the ideal preparation space but it is also where the family relax and catch up on the day’s events. The homeowner said: “We wanted

Opposite the island and across from the bespoke dresser which we also designed and installed there is a dining table in front of those amazing Georgian windows. Finished in a sleek combination of black glass and stainless steel, Smeg’s KDD90VX downdraft extractor is ideal for central island units as it fits flush with the work surface when not in use for a seamless aesthetic.
Caple’s DD911BK simply rises from the work surface into a vertical position accompanied by a neon strip light when in use. Its signature perimetrical extraction lowers sound levels further and increases the pressure resulting in improved motor performance.
Stylish and understated the Arezzo island hood from Luxair has been designed with serious chefs in mind, producing extraction rates to cope with the busiest of kitchens.

uilt in the 90s this home was by no means old but the owners felt it didn’t fulfil their lifestyle needs. They wanted a more open and contemporary layout, better suited to modern family life. Adding large, full height windows to the rear of the property opened the space to the garden and was better suited to their way of living. It also created more light and a better sense of flow. Working with Murray Property (Scotland) Ltd. on the renovations they chose Callum Walker Interiors to help transform their living space.

The brief was for something much fresher with functionality at the heart of it. While they wanted to modernise the room, they didn’t want anything overly contemporary that would look at odds with the rest of the home. It had to be unique and individual with plenty of warmth and character. Storage was another important consideration, as was the space to enjoy the room as a family. Working with designer Tracy Walker they chose Walnut cabinetry, to complement the other finishings in the house, Dekton ceramic worktops and splashback. The marble effect of

THE DESIGNER Tracy Walker “The clients came to me with a few ideas of their own and together we worked through their wish list requirements. They were never fully satisfied with their previous kitchen so were keen that this time they would have something completely bespoke and tailored to them. The huge island is a main focal point and can be spotted immediately as you enter the room. It consists of two large slabs jointed in the middle for a large, uninterrupted space. The other focal point is the cooking area with the extractor designed in-between the cabinets on each side. Uniquely shaped with a strong sense of symmetry they house the wine cooler, induction hob and storage space. Two seated areas face each other making it a very social space in the room and perfect for a casual catch-up over coffee or a sit-down meal. Full length windows flood the room in natural light and mean there is no need for harsh spot lights - the island pendant and down lighting under the cabinetry are adequate enough as an additional light source. The property’s elevated position takes in enviable, panoramic views of the Trossachs, something the owners were keen to make the most of so the design and ergonomics of this open plan space centres around the stunning vistas from both ends of the house – complemented by large glass fenestration. The design of the kitchen furniture focuses on a magnificent, functional island. The cabinetry was handcrafted in light oak shaker style with a traditional beaded inset frame and butt hinge and finished with a light lacquer. This was complemented by a number of hand-painted side cabinets in a freestanding style. Modern Classics
The classic kitchen has really come into vogue in the last few years and in many different guises including; handpainted (in shades of grey, blue, cream and white), Edwardian, Victorian and New England styles - typically with a central island which is usually the hub of family activity. What was once known as the traditional kitchen has been pared back and brought bang up to date.
GEORGIAN STYLE This kitchen is in a listed Georgian mansion, so it was important to create a look that fitted well with the surroundings and echoed Georgian grandeur and symmetry, yet included all the modern conveniences. ith a demanding job and busy family life this couple wanted a luxury bathroom in which they could retreat to, relax and forget about the stresses of the day. As Sculleries of Stockbridge had previously designed and fitted their kitchen it seemed only natural to ask the company back to turn an old-fashioned Jack and Jill bathroom into a spa-like sanctuary. Commenting on the initial task managing director and designer, Brian MInns said: “The client faced a major dilemma in the design of this room as when I first surveyed it there were two doors opening into what was an ensuite and family bathroom combined. A tough
choice was made and we blocked off one of the doorways to create a master ensuite with all of the proportions required to give them choice and freedom to specify exactly what they wanted the room to be, without compromise. The couple needed the room to have space and comfort for them both to relax, so a large freestanding cast iron bath from Bette took centre stage, along with a huge walk-in shower featuring a rainfall shower head, cascade, two bodyjets and a hamman function to produce hot air, steam and chromatherapy. Twin basins, each with storage underneath and a mirror above, were backed with slabs of bookmatched marble, matching the finish of the shower area and the top of the bespoke cabinetry. With a big bathroom space zones are important so we split the areas up into importance and work from the top down. Once you have the basic zones set out you can backtrack and work on the details. It wasn’t easy to get the shower to work with the clients’ existing plumbing. We ended up installing two entirely new drain systems to get the incredible amount of water produced from the Dornbracht shower removed efficiently. In bathroom design, if you want something to work long term then you really need to pay attention to the preparation of the room – there is no use having a drain with a capacity to remove half the water the shower can produce.” Sculleries of Stockbridge 25 North West Circus Place Edinburgh T: 0131 2266670 70/72 Princes Street Perth T: 01738 565780 sculleriesofstockbridge.com

room’s clean aesthetic so the lower part of the tall cupboard pulls out to reveal a laundry basket, while towels are stored in the large drawer beneath the honed marble seat The attention to detail in the room is second to none and the owners credit Brian and his team at Sculleries for going above and beyond to create their dream bathroom. “Our client chose the fittings for this bathroom from the most exclusive suppliers available. The wet room shower cabinet has been hand made to suit the space and includes a solid glass roof essential for the steam unit installed within. The marble panels were located after scouring suppliers all over Europe for the perfect book-matched examples,” said Brian. While this bathroom was designed with the couple in mind they also had Sculleries design and fit another bathroom for their three children. This room is just as stylish though the emphasis here is on functionality
and efficiency. A large curved Matki shower dominates the room and all the furniture is wall hanging to help maximise the feeling of space. The leathered granite, hung in a single sheet and installed behind the shower, proves an excellent surface for the wet rugby kit to be hung on after training and complements the solid granite sinks. Brian said: “This bathroom furniture is based on our linear design which is available in all of our polished wood finishes. In this particular room our remit was to provide a bathroom which would be used by a growing family and in particular the children. The design takes into account the need to have the best materials in the most practical applications. Floating wall fitted furniture has been used throughout the design including the section within the bay window, hidden laundry compartments and a bespoke towel rail marry the furniture to the wall colour and add a feeling of space to the overall design.”

THE HOME: A renovated property in Crieff
T
his renovation project has transformed how the owners use and enjoy their home. When they first met with Braco Designs it was with the brief of creating two bathrooms, one master and one for their daughter. The previous master bathroom was small with no space for a bath and no resemblance to the rest of the house. The house had seven bedrooms so designer Lee Collins persuaded them to knock through from the master bedroom and created a walkthrough wardrobe space, complete with bespoke shoe storage, that led into a beautifully proportioned bathroom. This refurbishment meant that the new bathroom not only had space to house a bath but one that could sit in front of the room’s large window, taking in the stunning views surrounding the property. In addition to the stunning freestanding, claw foot bath the room also boasts twin sinks and a wet-room style shower. Braco sourced all the sanitaryware from Drummonds and all the fittings have a grand feel to them that works perfectly with the

THE DESIGNER Lee Collins “The view and the scale/proportions of the room really stood out so we tried to work round this and added all wood pannelling to add back some character. Concealing storage behind mirrors allowed us to fit a stunning double marble Arabascato sink on a stand to give it a clean look. All the fittings from Drummonds of London sourced by Braco designs have a grand feel to them complementing the room size.” Braco Designs Front Street, Braco, North Dunblane Perthshire T: 01786 880489 bracodesigns.co.uk

character and style of the house. Placing the shower and sinks on a raised tiled platform gives the room a more spacious feel and storage has been discreetly concealed behind the two mirrors for a clean finish. Keeping the colour scheme in room neutral allows the chrome fixtures to really stand out while the choice of wooden flooring in the bath area adds depth and warmth. Bespoke lighting supplied by Braco completes the look.
Commenting on the design Lee said: “The view and the scale/ proportions of the room were what really stood out so we wanted a scheme that would show them off. “This is a beautiful home so we wanted to create a bathroom that was in keeping with the rest of the property. The choice of Drummonds’ sanitaryware, marble and wood panelling really helps to add some character back into the room.”

THE HOME: A terraced townhouse in Edinburgh

O
riginally one large terraced townhouse, this property had been subdivided into flats in the 1960s. The current owners, who lived in the basement flat and also owned the ground floor flat, decided to reconnect them to form one generous family home. Working with architect Rachel Mayhew they wanted to create a spacious home
with a strong sense of order and flow. Among the many changes two new family bathrooms were fitted - a dark internal basement bathroom with apse end curving round a freestanding bath, contrasting with a sunny upstairs bathroom. Working closely with Rachel their brief for the downstairs’ bathroom was for a well proportioned room with plenty of drama. Natural divisions exist within the room’s

The general thread through the house is of fairly neutral background colours, calm creams and off whites but as this room had no natural light source they decided to embrace this aspect and made the bold choice of painting the walls dark with dramatic lighting. Painting the internals of the built-in cupboards in a contrasting deep turquoise shade provides a pop of colour and surprise whenever the doors are opened. Rich oak flooring provides the perfect sense
of balance between the dark walls and white sanitaryware. Curved walls frame the freestanding bath giving the illusion of extra space and a sophisticated look. Rachel said: “Following the clients’ choice of a freestanding bath an apse end seemed to be a good way to end the vista and frame the bath plus curved walls can be lit well, so we thought carefully before adding a wash of light down the end wall. “Spotlights have been used throughout the scheme and work brilliantly with the dark walls for dramatic effect.”
THE DESIGNER Rachel Mayhew “Two new family bathrooms were fitted in this renovation project. The downstairs bathrooms sits in the basement with no natural light source, rather than trying to counteract this the client wanted to embrace it with dark walls and spotlights for dramatic effect. This is a long space and while some of the structure could be removed some had to stay, which naturally divided the space into two.” Rachel Mayhew Architect 19 Plewlands Avenue Edinburgh T: 0131 447 1627 rachelmayhewarcitect.co.uk
