LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO Kenneth Carter

Currently a student of Landscape Architecture, I am working in the construction and maintenance side of the industry at present. Having been immersed in the culture of the industry since a young age, I have developed a keen eye for the landscape around me and through the completion of the study component of my university degree, have honed this skill into a critical tool for use within my arsenal. My personal enjoyment lies in designing along side large scale infrastructure plans such as Sydney 2030, and aiding in future broad scale plans such as this. Having done various projects where these broad scale planning instruments have come into play, I have a grasp on these ideas and as such have learnt to design with a sense of future in mind, looking at the evolution of what I design into the future whether it be in evolution of use, Increased use, or Afterlife reuse of the designed spaces. From a design perspective, my passion lies in designing spaces where the Indoors and outdoors can be as one. From designing adjacent areas to building frontages, to designing cool zones into public spaces, taking inspiration from Central Park in Sydney. Green buildings and ecologically thoughtful design is what drives much of what I look to implement. Contact me: @: kennethcarter27@gmail.com w: www.kennethcarter.com.au m: 0401 862 669

Poetic Prose As I leave the Beach I walk though the food precinct, the aromas draw me in and before I know it, I’m walking away with an afternoon snack. The day is young, the sun is high and I just want somewhere to relax, a cool spot to escape through. I turn a corner and find myself peering into a small square. Vibrant colors, nestled in between two towering buildings, perfectly shaded and uniquely styled. I rest upon the sloped lawn escaping the evening heat in good company and situ. LINDFIELD GREEN

Year: 2014 Client: Ku-ring-gai Council Contributers: Kenneth Carter Subject Focus: Complex Program Programs Used: Photoshop Illustrator AutoCAD InDesign Skills Developed: Photoshop Competence Model Making Design on Structure Design Statement To design a civic space for the residents of Lindfield. The space will sit atop a new 2 storey underground carpark, and as such areas of deep soil are needed to improve canopy cover above. Program areas such as Market Spaces, Flat soft landscape, and a pavillion with commercially leasable space work in conjuction to create a space for resting, sitting and traversing within the designated “cool zone.which planting shade and structures are design to create. Lastly the design will sit seamlessly into the existing streetscape of the neighbourhood.

Programs: Photoshop, AutoCAD Master plan: The final design for the site AutoCAD developed, and then rendered in Programs: Photoshop, AutoCAD

Programs: Photoshop, AutoCAD Car Park Level B1: With Capacity for 80 cars, light wells through the glass bottomed water features on the surface, and lift well and stair access in the Southeast corner. Understanding of the bottom level and its relation to the surface was very important in this project.

Deep Soils: Showing Depth of soil for planting above the basement carpark which sits at a minimum of 500mm from the surface. Deep soils was a concept taught and grasped within this project to allow for large canopy trees

THE ESCARPMENT INTERCHANGE

Year: 2015 Client: SHFA Contributers: Kenneth Carter Subject Focus: Full Resolution Programs Used: Photoshop Illustrator AutoCAD InDesign Google Sketchup Design Statement A linear interchange Plaza landscae bisecting the Balmain / White Bay escarpment edge. The parj typology traqverses the cliff edge encouraging travel between the upper and lower sections of the site forming the interchange between a range of infrastructure connections. This is achieved through a dramatic pushing of the escarpment edge, bringin it out in the built form, thus enabling direct interaction and a unique user experience.

KEY SKILLS Team Work Working in a fast paced team environment such as Subway, where my managerial skills were put to the test, I have developed the skills to be able to conduct a team of individuals directing them according to their individual strengths and weaknesses to perform at peak level. I myself, having completed nearly 4 years of my degree am no stranger to working in a team environment and am aware of the importance of combining each others efforts in a cohesive manner to get any job done. Time Management A university degree a set me up with strong time management skills. Having successfully held two jobs whilst completing the final year of my degree, I am aware of the strains that poor time management can put on a schedule and as such have strongly developed these skills. Communication Skill Constant demand to effectively communicate my design intentions throughout the degree has given me the skills to communicate my ideas and intentions clearly and with ease. As well, eight years of customer service at Subway has helped me develop strong customer/client relation skills and the ability to maintain the effective use of communication even in times of high stress. Computer and IT Skills Having, for a short time run my own web design business, I am confident in the use of technology and software in an evolving industry. I have a strong ability to pick up new programs with ease and with a basic understanding of how programs work beneath the surface, can understand these systems to a greater depth.
