Kate Clements is a talented young artist from Iowa City who lives and works in Philadelphia. Clements creates sculpture with kiln fired glass, constructing evocative montages that are visually reminiscent of delicate lace patterns. The objects seem to refer to all things old and delicate; things that are steeped in nostalgia, that are dusty-perhaps even ghostly. There is a strange fastidiousness to this work, the fact of the obvious fragility of the artist’s tableaus is reinforced by the complicated patterns the artist has “weaved. In her most ambitious works the glass elements seem to be hung in thick layers, monofilament threads holding everything together invisibly, entire works seeming to float in space. While there is plenty of beauty in these works they do feel tinged with an eerie sadness, like something precious and long lost, discovering these pieces invites rumination and retrospection. The gallery is thrilled to be mounting Shadowlands, an exhibition of artworks by Kate Clements. Please enjoy this catalogue documenting the exhibition. Ken Saunders, September 2018

Fashion, adornment, and ornament all have insidious life cycles- newness is simultaneously associated with demise and death. Though fashion and adornment are closely related to the body, ornament can expand to architecture and environment. Philadelphia-based artist, Clements, constructs delicate and ornate installations that create vulnerable shadowlands between states of emotions. Inviting the viewer in with the seductive material of glass, there is however, a darkness underneath the surface. A snake in the grass, bloodstains in the pattern, a world on fire. The fragility of the glass becomes metaphorical for the fragility of the body. Ornaments beyond nature, transparent and ephemeral. Kate Clements, 2018
