offering a wide range of opportunities for students interested in exploring engineering’s many applications. The Pre-Engineering and Applied Sciences Center, a new facility opened in 2014, provides lab space equipped with 3-D printers and an official VEX Robotics Competition field. The Pre-Engineering certificate allows students to complete a sequence of courses and independent research that prepares them for college and graduate work in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. Graduates completing the certificate have enrolled in such institutions as Georgia Tech, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

“ Going on the field trip to AMCO Precision Tool opened my eyes to not only how complicated it is to design specific mechanisms to perform unique tasks, but how much precision is required to make a premium product. The extra millionth of an inch can matter. Zoe ’14 Pelham, NY Pre-Engineering, Crew, Choir, Community Service

The Pre-Engineering Program takes a hands-on approach and gives students important skills in critical thinking, creative initiative, and collaborative strategies. Each year students take field trips to area businesses and manufacturing plants, and attend lectures by guest speakers who are leading business executives, scholars, and innovators in engineering and related fields. Kent students also may enroll in an after school class in entrepreneurship, designing and implementing their own business plans. Housed in the Pre-Engineering and Applied Sciences Center, the entrepreneurship class is a significant component of an interdisciplinary approach to preparing students for 21st century careers.

brings together engineering, entrepreneurship, and global to high school students from across the United States and the world. Sessions focus on such topics as Pre-Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Team-Based Engineering and Manufacturing, and Science, Engineering, and Innovation. Kent partners with Harvard University, the Wharton School, and Georgia Tech in offering summer programs that allow students to discover the many ways that engineering skills can be applied in manufacturing, economic growth and business development, and the solving of global challenges.

“ Everyone thinks that engineering is only for rocket scientists, but it can lead to many different fields and kinds of work. We give students a hands-on experience so they can discover this for themselves.” Matthew Heslop ’04 B.S. Worcester Polytechnic Institute M.S. Worcester Polytechnic Institute Mathematics, Soccer, Fitness Center Coordinator

“ Being involved in Kent Pre-E programs gives students the unique opportunity to learn vital skills through hands-on active learning experiences, and through competitions and field trips. It promotes creativity and problem-solving and facilitates teamwork.” Ben Nadire, Ph.D. B.A. Universite Mohammed V, Morocco Fulbright Scholar M.A. Universite de Montpellier, France Ph.D. Northeastern University Doctorat Universite de Montpellier, France Mathematics, Pre-Engineering Program Director

Guest speakers from the business and academic worlds provide insight into such fields as computer-aided manufacturing and biomedical engineering. This unique opportunity to study with leaders in a variety of engineering and a wealth of possibilities for future study and careers. Georgia Tech, the newest SEEK partner, has chosen Kent as one of four high schools nationally to participate in a franchise program that creates regional clusters pairing schools with local industry leaders and universities to support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and activities.

Engineering is not only crucial to understanding just how things work but how we can work together toward building a better world, whether the topic is alternative energy sources or creating economic opportunity in developing nations. In the SEEK Program and Pre-Engineering courses offered in the Kent curriculum, students work collaboratively with their classmates on solutions to concrete challenges. By designing and constructing a model bridge or learning to use a prototyping machine, you will have the chance to apply creative thinking to real world issues. These programs reflect Kent’s commitment to training the next generation for leadership roles in science and technology.
